I hope they serve biscuits and dog food at the Cannes Film Festival because Messi, the Border Collie from Justin Triet’s Academy Award-winning drama Anatomy of a Fall, is making his way to the annual celebration of film in France. With two films nominated for multiple Oscars at the 96th Academy Award, 2023 is perhaps the best year in Sandra Hüller’s decades-long career. Apart from Jonathan Glazer’s The Zone of Interest, which won Best Sound and Best International Feature Film, the German thespian performed alongside Swann Arlaud and Milo Machado-Graner in Justine Triet’s Anatomy of a Fall. She played the wife of Nazi officer Rudolf Höss in Glazer’s adaptation of Martin Amis’ 2014 Holocaust novel and a novelist facing trial for the murder of her husband in Triet’s legal drama. The latter earned Sandra Hüller her first Academy Award nomination

Anatomy of a Fall actress Sandra Hüller could be making a roast for Akiva Schaffer’s The Naked Gun reboot, so how hot and wet do you like it? A report from industry insider Daniel Richtman says Sandra Hüller is in talks to play the romantic lead in the forthcoming comedy, starring Liam Neeson as Frank Drebin Jr., the son of Leslie Nielsen’s Lt. Frank Drebin from the Police Squad series and Naked Gun film trilogy.
In the Naked Gun trilogy, Lt. Frank Drebin falls in love with Jane Spencer (Lisa Marie Presley), an assistant for industrialist Vincent Ludwig, utterly unaware of his villainy. After a slapstick-ridden meet-cute, Frank and Jane form a heated courtship accompanied by steamy home-cooked meals, ultra-protected sex, and trips to the baseball field.
How Liam Neeson and Hüller’s characters cross paths in the Naked Gun reboot remains a mystery. We must also wait...

2024 Oscar Snubs: Killers of the Flower Moon & Maestro ( Photo Credit – IMDb )
The 2024 Oscar saw Oppenheimer bag seven awards, including Best Director, Best Actor and Best Picture. Poor Things won four awards at the Academy this year. However, there were some big 2023 movies that either won just one or not even a single award. Like every year, we witnessed again how some movies, directors or actors’ work got completely unrecognised.
From Robert De Niro’s Killers of the Flower Moon to Bradley Cooper’s Maestro, many famous films were brutally ignored at the 2024 Oscar ceremony. We have listed several such movies that were nominated in different categories, but got snubbed by the Academy.
Major 2024 Oscar Snubs – Killers of The Flower Moon
The Martin Scorsese directorial received ten Oscar nominations this year – from Best Director to Best Supporting Actor (Robert De Niro). To everyone’s surprise, the film didn’t win a single award.

The Oscars have officially begun! And everybody’s favorite Anatomy of a Fall has won the title of Best Original Screenplay, making Messi proud! To receive the award, the duo of very talented writers Justine Triet and her writing partner, Arthur Harari, marched down the aisle and delivered a speech that is oddly inspiring to many. This makes Anatomy of a Fall the first non-English language film to win in this category since Parasite in 2019.

The Academy Award-winning French courtroom thriller "Anatomy of a Fall" is one seriously chilly movie. It's visually quite cold, taking place in winter in the mountains, and its characters are equally icy. Not even a cover of 50 Cent's "P.I.M.P" played on the typically breezy steel drums can warm it up, but there's one magical element in the movie that manages to make things feel a bit less freezing: the dog Snoop, played by Messi the border collie. Messi is the Mvp of "Anatomy of a Fall," and that's really saying something considering the film's powerhouse performances from Sandra Hüller, Milo Machado Graner, and Swann Arlaud (Hüller is nominated for Best Actress for her role). Messi won the Palm Dog this past year, which is like the Palm d'Or but for dog performers at Cannes, but he doesn't stand a chance of winning any Oscars at the Academy Awards.

Crank up that steel drum cover of 50 Cent’s “P.I.M.P”! “Anatomy of a Fall” has scored the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. Director Justine Triet and her husband and co-writer Arthur Harari took the stage at the Dolby Theater on March 10 to accept the trophy.
In winning the award, Triet and Harari beat out several other Best Picture nominees to claim the top prize. Also nominated in the category were David Hemingson for “The Holdovers,” Bradley Cooper and Josh Singer for “Maestro,” and Celine Song for “Past Lives.” The sole non-Best Picture nominee recognized in the category was “May December,” which received its sole Oscar nomination for Samy Burch’s script.
The Original Screenplay Oscar is the latest award that Triet’s courtroom drama received during the past Awards season. Triet and Harari won in the same category at the British Academy Film Awards, the Golden Globes, and the French César Awards.

Anatomy of a Fall.Anatomy of a Fall (2023) begins with a black screen and an auditory fragment: a short exchange between writer Sandra Voyter (Sandra Hüller) and a young student who’s come to interview her about her career. When the film’s image and sound come into sync, both of them realize that the student’s phone has failed to record their conversation. Reality, seemingly, starts only when the “record” button has been pressed. We never see the titular fall in Justine Triet’s courtroom drama, only a corpse. The moment when Sandra’s husband, Samuel Maleski (Samuel Theis), plunges to his death from the attic of their chalet is presented only in simulations, both speculative flashbacks based on courtroom testimony and technical reenactments from expert witnesses. Though a trial is ostensibly a search for the truth, Triet's film is a metacinematic treatise on epistemology, showing only so much...

Justine Triet’s Anatomy of a Fall won Best Film and Best Director at the 49th edition of the French César awards Friday.

Set to start shooting in Norway in the coming weeks, “Sukkwan Island” is based on the semi-autobiographical novella by American author David Vann, part of his 2010 collection “Legend of a Suicide.” The story follows a haunted young man’s travels to a wild and secluded Island to reconnect with his father. Sandra Hüller says a sex scene involving her character Sandra and her lawyer Vincent almost made it into “Anatomy of a Fall. The Oscar-nominated actress told Variety that the courtroom drama, which is up for Best Picture, originally had a sex scene involving her character Sandra and her defense lawyer (Swann Arlaud), who has gone viral by way of the “Fleabag” “hot priest” on the internet.
While Hüller credited writer/director Justine Triet’s film for having a “perfect script,” she and a producer found one planned scene to be particularly “dull”; the sequence ultimately was scrapped. “There was an actual love scene in the film, we could see their affair,” Hüller said of her widow character Sandra and her attorney. Hüller added that producer Marie-Ange Luciani disagreed with the scene, and it was not included in the film.

Thomas Cailley’s supernatural drama “The Animal Kingdom” and Justine Triet’s Palme d’Or winner “Anatomy of a Fall” are leading the race at the 49th Cesar Awards with 12 and 11 nominations, respectively.
Triet’s movie, which just garnered an impressive five Oscar nominations, and “The Animal Kingdom,” which opened at Cannes’ Un Certain Regard and won a prize, will vie for top Cesar awards including best director and film.
“The Animal Kingdom” is an ambitious film that marks a departure from France’s cinema tradition of social realism. It’s both a creature-filled dystopia and a father-and-son drama, weaving some contemporary concerns over the future of mankind. It’s produced by Pierre Guyard at Nord Ouest Films and co-produced by Artemis.

The 2024 Oscars is set for March 10, 2024 in its traditional home, the Dolby Theater. Films released theatrically from January 1 to December 31 of 2023 are eligible for consideration for the 96th annual Academy Awards. Some of the early Oscar hopefuls were launched at Sundance in January and Cannes in May. Four more film festivals — Telluride, Venice, Toronto and New York — will showcase more movies. However, the ongoing writers and actors strikes could reduce the visibility of those contenders. Likewise for those films that forego the festival circuit entirely.
Voting for the 10 shortlisted categories runs from Dec. 14 to 18, with the semi-finalists revealed on Dec. 21. Nominations voting kicks off on Jan. 11, 2024 for six days with the slate of final contenders announced on Jan. 23. Final voting starts on Feb.

Almost all of the Best Actor winners at this century’s 22 Academy Awards ceremonies have ticked at least one of these two boxes: they were over 40 or portraying a real-life fellow. The only exceptions: Russell Crowe (“Gladiator”) and Jean Dujardin (“The Artist”) who were 36 and 39 respectively when they won for playing fictional characters.
In 2023, Brendan Fraser, 54, won for his heartbreaking performance in “The Whale.” The year before saw Will Smith, 53, prevail for portraying tennis coach Richard Williams in “King Richard.” In 2021, Anthony Hopkins became the oldest Best Actor champ ever at age 83 when he won for “The Father.” At the 2020 Oscars, Joaquin Phoenix was 45 when he picked up the Best Actor Oscar for “Joker.” And in 2019, 37-year-old Rami Malek (“Bohemian Rhapsody”) triumphed for his riveting portrayal of Queen frontman Freddie Mercury. Anatomy Of A Fall begins with a deadly fall but another kind of fall is much of the fascinating, emotionally searing story, starring Sandra Huller, who was so outstanding in Toni Erdman. Huller plays Sandra, the German wife of a French man, Samuel (Samuel Theis) who is killed in a deadly fall from an upper level of their remote Alpine chalet home, a fall that quickly becomes suspicious, with circumstances pointing to the wife. The couple have a son who may or may not be a witness to what happened – if there is indeed a crime. Questions and doubts abound in this excellent drama.

Two experimental films executive produced by Steven Soderbergh — Eddie Alcazar’s Divinity and Godfrey Reggio’s Once Within a Time – join Neon’s anticipated Cannes Palme d’Or winner Anatomy of a Fall in theaters today, a bit of counterprogramming on a weekend dominated by Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour.
Divinity, about a dark and creepy future populated by bodybuilders hooked on an elixir for eternal life, “was always made for the theater,” said Alcazar. “But it’s kind of a roll of the dice of what a distributor wants to do with it.” Utopia, which acquired the black-and-white romp — set mostly in a mansion on a desert that looks like the moon — after its Sundance premiere (see Deadline review), opens Divinity at Regal Union Square in NYC, expanding to Los Angeles next week, with a national rollout on 11/3.
There will be opening-weekend Q&As with Alcazar, Soderbergh, star Stephen Dorff and DJ Muggs.

Anatomy of a Fall starts out with an extraordinary act of passive-aggressiveness: A German writer, Sandra Voyter (Sandra Hüller) is sitting in her home in Grenoble, a part-cabin, part-winter-getaway mini-mansion tucked away at the snowy foot of the French Alps. She’s being interviewed by a female student (Camille Rutherford) about her work. Wine’s being consumed, questions lead to slightly flirty answers and queries about the young woman’s life. The vibe feels like it’s slowly drifting into intimate territory. Sandra’s son, Daniel (Milo Machado-Graner), is roaming around with his Border Collie,...

"I didn't realize it was so high..." "Yeah." Picturehouse in the UK has unveiled a new official UK trailer for the acclaimed French drama Anatomy of a Fall. There has already been one US trailer from last month, but now that a UK date is set, it's getting another promo. The film is the big Palme d'Or winner this year from the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, and it's also playing at TIFF and NYFF. The legal procedural thriller is about a German woman who's suspected of her husband's murder after he falls out a window in their French Alps mountain home. The story is very clearly inspired by real life the case of Michael Peterson (with the gender swapped for his character), which was covered in The Staircase series. “Anatomy of a Fall,” which won the Palme d’Or (and also the Palme Dog) at the Cannes Film Festival this past summer, is opening in the U.S. on Oct. 13. And ahead of its theatrical debut, its American distributor Neon has released a brand-new, nerve-shredding trailer (watch it above).
In “Anatomy of a Fall” Sandra Hüller plays a woman who lives alone with her husband and young son in the French Alps.

If a husband is found dead at the base of a mountain in the woods, does that automatically mean his wife pushed him?
In Justine Triet’s Palme d’Or-winning “Anatomy of a Fall,” “Toni Erdmann” star Sandra Hüller takes a turn, playing a chilly bisexual novelist who is accused of offing her spouse. Added twist: he’s been killed in the very same manner she previously described in one of her murder mystery books. Director Triet co-wrote the script with her real-life spouse, Arthur Harari, the filmmaker behind “Onoda: 10,000 Nights in the Jungle.”
“Anatomy of a Fall” debuted at Cannes earlier this year, where the film won the festival’s top prize, making Triet only the third woman to win the Palme d’Or. The feature is continuing to make its rounds on the the festival circuit with upcoming screenings at TIFF and NYFF, and the film will hit theaters later this fall.

Justine Triet’s “Anatomy of a Fall,” one of the best reviewed films of the Cannes competition, which was bought by Neon, examines the collapse of a marriage and a mother-and-son relationship in a documentary-style courtroom drama. The chamber piece is driven by Sandra Hüller’s (“Toni Erdmann”) nuanced performance as a successful German novelist on trial for the murder of her husband (Samuel Theis), who died in mysterious circumstances in a remote corner of the snowy French Alps.
