She was a best-selling British novelist who moved from historical fiction to espionage thrillers, one of the first female writers in the spy genre. She wrote novels about Catherine the Great; Queen Victoria and Prince Albert; Queen Elizabeth I; and Anne Boleyn. In the late 1960s she began writing stories about Cold War espionage.
