Every so often, a pitch for a television show that never got off the ground leaks onto the internet. More often than not, it’s an original idea; other times, it’s a pitch to revive an older intellectual property. Well, this has just happened when a pitch bible for a reboot of the classic Disney One Saturday Morning cartoon Recess was discovered.
For those who may not remember, Recess was a series created by Paul Germain and Joe Ansolabehere in 1997 for Disney’s One Saturday Morning block. The show followed a group of six friends, all fourth graders, enjoying that special time of day: Recess. The show not only gave us fun adventures with the gang but also commentary on society and social norms through the eyes of a child.
The series ran from 1997 to 2001 and had 65 episodes. It concluded with the theatrical film Recess: School’s Out in 2001 and a handful of direct-to-video specials.

The late 1990s was a golden age for serialized animation for young audiences. Nickelodeon, The Disney Channel, and Cartoon Network were firing on all cylinders, and '90s kids were able to reap the benefits of an explosive new entertainment landscape. In 1997, Walt Disney Television Animation debuted the show "Recess" on ABC, as part of Disney's "One Saturday Morning" block of programming, the last vestige of Saturday Morning Cartoons. The show was a huge hit, centering on the adventures of fourth graders and what happens on the playground during recess. The show was created by Joe Ansolabehere and "Rugrats" co-creator Paul...

(Welcome to My Most Ridiculous Note, a series of interviews in which animators talk about the weirdest and funniest notes they received from studio executives.)
Back in the '90s, Nickelodeon revolutionized the TV animation industry with creator-driven shows like "Ren & Stimpy" that took an unconventional approach to story, tone, themes, and visuals. One show at the forefront of that change, with its experimental animation and storytelling that changed what we thought about children's cartoons, was "Rugrats."
Joe Ansolabehere was one of the writers who helped make "Rugrats" into that '90s cultural juggernaut. A writer on that show just as...

Since the medium’s infancy, viewers have enjoyed sharing holidays with their favourite television characters. We grow invested in our friends on screen over the years; spending Christmas with them is a rite of passage, a chance for us to share tradition from our world with the fictional ones we see on screen. Some shows embrace the season wholeheartedly, characters in good spirits and enjoying the trappings of the season; others skew a little darker, bringing the more oppressive, burdensome side of the holidays to life. Either way, Christmas episodes tend to demonstrate the strengths of our favourite series, and it’s long been a festive ritual of mine to wheel out old...
