2023 was the end of an era in the Best Comedy Supporting Actress Emmy category. For the first time in 10 years, “Saturday Night Live” was snubbed in the category in which it has been nominated a record 22 times and has won twice, both for Kate MicKinnon. Can it rebound in 2024?
Ever since the TV academy allowed “SNL” cast members to enter in the comedy acting categories in 2008, the sketch series has dominated supporting actress, with 2013 and 2023 being the only years it has failed to earn a nomination. McKinnons is “SNL’s” most nominated performer in the category — and overall — with nine bids, the second most in the category after Rhea Perlman and Loretta Swit, who each received 10.
After McKinnon’s final nomination for her final season in 2022, it was clear that “SNL” might struggle to continue its nomination streak. She was “SNL’s” only nominee in the category that year, down...

Before you make your 2024 Emmy predictions for Best Comedy Supporting Actress, take a look through our photo gallery featuring the ladies most likely to land in the lineup. Since last year’s winner – Ayo Edebiri (“The Bear”) – is now campaigning as a lead, this race is wide open to an array of possible newcomers, past contenders, and even a few former winners.
At this point, the clear frontrunner is potential category first-timer Meryl Streep (“Only Murders in the Building”), who previously achieved two Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actress wins for “Holocaust” (1978) and “Angels in America” (2004). Hoping to challenge her are three of Edebiri’s “The Bear” cast mates: Liza Colon-Zayas, Abby Elliott, and Molly Gordon.
Of Edebiri’s six 2023 competitors, only two – “Abbott Elementary” pair Janelle James and Sheryl Lee Ralph – are involved in the current race. Ralph took this prize for the same series in 2022, defeating Hannah Einbinder...

The Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series category has gotten extra starry this year, with “Only Murders in the Building” and “Palm Royale” alone adding several Oscar winners to the mix. Last year, Abbott Elementary's second season ended with an epic fake out: while on a sleepover school trip, Janine and Gregory confessed their feelings for each other in the surprisingly romantic setting of The Franklin Institute (who knew!) and then... decided to stay friends??
Fans of the show either swooned at this continuation of their slow-burn relationship or lost hope (and interest) in the series ever delivering on this particular storyline.
In either case, it seemed a safe bet that these two characters would spend a lot of time apart during the next season and maybe even explore other dating opportunities.
Season 3 opened with a five-month time jump (a creative way to account for delays from the Hollywood writers and actors strikes) and with Janine now working for the Philadelphia school district.
This potentially series-changing news was walked back a bit when we learned that it's only a temporary internship...

Based on the combined predictions of over 2,000 Gold Derby users, Lily Gladstone (“Under the Bridge”) and Walton Goggins (“Fallout”) are not generally expected to reap 2024 Emmy bids at this time. However, their chances of soon reaching predicted nominee status greatly improved over the past week thanks to their new category placements. The limited series actress’ odds jumped from 100/1 to 66/1 after she migrated from lead to supporting, while the dramatic actor went from 62/1 to 37/1 by making the opposite move.
Gladstone’s “Under the Bridge” cast mate, Riley Keough, joined her in switching from lead to supporting but still retains her original 100/1 odds. The other two performers who rose above their previous 100/1 odds this week are lead actress Julianne Moore (“Mary & George”) and featured actor Mark Ruffalo (“All the Light We Cannot See”), both of whom hail from limited series.
At this point, the non-continuing series races are proving to be the most dynamic ones overall.

The strike may have delayed and abbreviated the third season of Abbott Elementary but Quinta Brunson went into it feeling pretty confident that her comedy wasn’t going anywhere: she was told that ABC had picked up the series for a fourth season.
While appearing at Deadline’s Contenders TV on Sunday, Brunson — who was joined on stage by Tyler James Williams (Gregory), Chris Perfetti (Jacob) and William Stanford Davis (Mr. Johnson) — recalled how incredible it felt to know that “ABC trusted us” before they even began production on season 3.
The news of the pickup was made public in February at the Television Critics Associaton press tour.
The comedy just wrapped production last week on the third season. Brunson, who plays Janine in the comedy that she created for ABC, said she still marvels at how far her Emmy-winning comedy has come.

Abbott Elementary is returning for a fourth season, and we're busting out the Gritty merch to celebrate.
But will next season be the last one for Quinta Brunson's breakout hit, or can we expect to see our favorite Philly teachers for years to come?
In a recent interview with Elle, Brunson provided some insight into her plans for the smash hit sitcom.
Brunson, an Emmy winner with a long list of accolades (including being the first Black woman to receive three comedy Emmy nominations), is a Philadelphia native who developed Abbott Elementary as a love letter to her city.
Raised in Philadelphia public schools, Brunson also had the benefit of being raised by a kindergarten teacher: her mother, Norma Jean.

“Abbott Elementary” received the same three supporting acting Emmy nominations across its first two seasons: Janelle James and Sheryl Lee Ralph for supporting actress and Tyler James Williams for supporting actor. The comedy is likely to pick up those three bids again for its third season this year, but will it score any beyond that? Also eligible are Lisa Ann Walter in supporting actress (eighth place in our combined odds), as well as Chris Perfetti (10th place) and William Stanford Davis (21st place) in supporting actor — and their categories may be open enough for them finally to break in.

Bradley Cooper did not take home an Oscar on Sunday for Maestro, but the loss was followed up with a winning cameo in the opening scene of the new episode of Abbot Elementary.
Cooper appeared as himself during the episode, popping up as a student’s show-and-tell project.
“Whenever I’m in Philly, you know the deli across the street? That’s my first stop,” Cooper, who is from the Philadelphia area in real life, says. “My dad used to always take me there. They have the best hoagies in the city.

Bradley Cooper left the 2024 Oscars empty-handed on Sunday, but the best actor nominee for Maestro got a moment to shine among the staff and students of one of TV’s biggest shows when he appeared on the episode of Abbott Elementary that immediately followed the ceremony.
Cooper, whose passion project Maestro was nominated for seven Academy Awards but won none, took a self-deprecating turn in the cameo as himself on ABC’s award-winning hit comedy. In the episode’s opening moments, the star of the biopic focusing on legendary composer Leonard Bernstein’s tormented personal life is seen at the titular school as the guest of a second-grader pal, Kaleel, but the class fails to recognize the star.
“Oh, I just loved you in The Holdovers. It was just so heartwarming,” Barbara (Sheryl Lee Ralph) tells Cooper, perhaps mistaking him for Paul Giamatti, who was also up for best actor for that movie this year.

Bradley Cooper may not have won an Oscar, but he did win a role on “Abbott Elementary.”
The “Maestro” actor stopped by to play himself in the cold open of the “Abbott” episode that aired directly after ABC’s telecast of the 96th Academy Awards. In the scene, a student in Melissa’s (Lisa Ann Walter) class brings Cooper to campus.
“Whenever I’m in Philly, you know the deli across the street? That’s my first stop,” the Pennsylvania native says. “My dad used to always take me there. They have the best hoagies in the city.” His second grade friend retorts, “Everybody wanted to take a picture with him, so I figured he was famous.”
Though the scene was obviously taped well before the Oscars, it doesn’t seem the “Abbott Elementary” writers were predicting a win for Cooper, instead allowing him to self deprecate about his much-talked about Oscar campaign.

Abbott Elementary will still air on Wednesday March 6, but no new episode will be broadcast, and that’s for a very specific reason. As previously unveiled by ABC, a new episode of Abbott would broadcast following the 96th Academy Awards. In other words, the biggest night for movies is set to be the lead-in for Abbott‘s forthcoming episode, “Willard R. Abbott.” The installment will see the titular school deemed a Philadelphia historical landmark, much to the excitement of principal Ava (Janelle James) and Janine (Quinta Brunson), but Barbara (Sheryl Lee Ralph) and Melissa (Lisa Ann Walter) aren’t as impressed with the accolade. As the school plans a celebration in honor of its namesake, not everything will go as planned. (Credit: Disney/Gilles Mingasson) Joining Brunson, James, Ralph, Walter, Tyler James Williams, Chris Perfetti, and William Stanford Davis for the episode are guest stars June Diane Raphael and Jennifer Elise Cox.

Kelly Ripa teased Ryan Seacrest’s return to Live with Kelly and Mark at the end of last week.
This would be the first time he visited the show since last May. Since quitting Live with Kelly and Ryan in April 2023, he has been busy with his projects.
The show has a new energy, with Kelly and Mark sharing much of their married lives. There is less competition between the pros since Mark is newer to hosting than Ryan.
Kelly seemed to have moved on from her time with Ryan based on her actions toward him when he visited as a guest.
During his visit to the show, Kelly warned the audience not to scare him since he was “very skittish,” and things went downhill from there.
Ryan irritated Kelly as she was filling in the audience with the upcoming guests and other information, and Kelly did not like to...

Andra Day says she hasn’t performed the National Anthem for some time because she was waiting to sing the Black National Anthem first.
“I will tell you, truthfully, I have not done an anthem in a while because the thing I kept saying is that, ‘I do not want to do it again until I’m able to sing ‘Lift Every Voice and Sing,’” she told The Hollywood Reporter on Sunday after performing the famed hymn at Sunday’s Super Bowl.
“The first time I heard that they did this, even though it was untelevised with Alicia [Keys], I was elated. And then seeing Sheryl Lee Ralph do it — it was incredible. To be able to even stand in those women’s footsteps, or in their shoes, is truly an honor,” Day continues. “And what I loved about this song, my mom was looking at the lyrics and she says,...

Andra Day delivered a rousing performance of “Lift Every Voice and Sing” on Sunday ahead of Super Bowl Lviii.
The Grammy winner and past Oscar nominee took to the field during the pregame portion to sing the song dressed in a two-piece beige pantsuit adorned with gold bangles, rings and earrings. She was backed by a chorus of singers dressed in all black.
Standing behind them were the 2023 nominees for the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award, which honors a player for the achievements on and off the field, focusing on their philanthropic endeavors and community efforts. The 2023 winner is Cameron Heyward of the Pittsburgh Steelers, who gave a brief speech ahead of Day’s performance.
