Syndey Sweeney is currently one of the most in-demand young actors generally. She has just recently come off the hit rom-com Anyone But You and horror pic Immaculate, but that doesn’t mean that the young actress is taking a rest. No, as things stand, Sweeney has decided to tackle yet another genre, as she has signed on to portray legendary American boxer Christy Martin in the upcoming biopic produced by Black Bear. The movie is going to be presented to buyers in Cannes and it might be one of the biggest scoops of the festival this year.
In case you’re not familiar with the name, Christy Martin is a true legend of female boxing. Known as both “the Female Rocky” and “The Coal Miner’s Daughter,” she was a legend of American female boxing in the 1990s and one of the most successful female boxers in history. She...

Sydney Sweeney has been cast as boxer Christy Martin in a new biopic. The 26-year-old 'Euphoria' actress - who has recently appeared in the likes of 'Anyone But You' and 'Immaculate' - is once again switching directions as she takes on the role of a boxing trailblazer described by producers as the "female Rocky".Sweeney told Deadline: "Christy Martin not only legitimized female boxing, she overcame gender stereotypes, and fought through emotional, physical, and financial abuse."I’m passionate about the fighting world, Christy’s story shines a light on her incredible rise to the top while showing the struggles of fame behind the curtains."I feel compelled to tell a story about a woman who faced so much adversity and didn’t allow it to defeat her. It’s powerful, and emotional.”The 'White Lotus' star is no stranger to boxing and Mma,...

Sweeney is set to play Christy Martin in a film that will be directed by War Machine’s David Michod. The project is set to go to market at Cannes next week.
Following the commercial success of their 2023 romantic comedy, Anyone But You, both Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell have been building their careers based on the perception within Hollywood that they can now ‘open’ a movie. Selling a movie based on star power continues to be important in the kind of mid to low-budget films that Sweeney seems intent on making: her recent nun-centric horror flick Immaculate was reportedly made for just $9m and as well as being a lot of fun, the film made that back and more during its theatrical run.
According to World Of Reel, one of Sweeney’s next projects will also see her put in another performance where she has to run a physical and emotional gauntlet,...

Sydney Sweeney is getting in the ring.
The breakout from, well, basically everything she’s done lately is set to play boxer Christy Martin in an upcoming biopic directed by David Michôd (“Animal Kingdom”). Insert your own joke here about being a knockout. The script for the untitled project was written by Mirrah Foulkes and Michôd.
Martin was the most successful female boxer of the 1990s. She signed with Don King and is the only female boxer to appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated. Martin became welterweight champion — but that was about the end of the good things in her life. Christy was physically abused by husband Jim Martin, who was eventually convicted of attempted second-degree murder with a firearm and sentenced to 25 years in prison. Christy Martin’s life is documented in “Untold,” the excellent series of documentaries by Chaplain and Maclain Way. Her episode is subtitled “Deal with the Devil,...

Sydney Sweeney has lined up her next role as groundbreaking boxer Christy Martin in a new biopic.
Australian filmmaker David Michôd, best known for his films Animal Kingdom and The King, will direct from a script co-written with Mirrah Foulkes.
The movie will chart Martin’s rise to the most recognized female boxer in the 1990s, from meeting her manager and future husband Jim Martin to becoming the first woman to sign with star-making promoter Don King. Dubbed the “female Rocky” by the film’s producers, Martin remains the only female boxer to land a Sports Illustrated cover.
In an interview with Deadline, Michôd said, “The film is about Christy as a young gay woman in small town Virginia in the 1990s. She came from a relatively conservative family and wasn’t allowed to be who she was so she used boxing as a vehicle to express herself and her rage.

Anyone But You and Madame Web star Sydney Sweeney is eager to enter the squared circle to portray pioneering boxer Christy Martin for director David Michôd’s upcoming biopic. The project, which will fetch a pretty penny at the Cannes market, charts Martin’s rise to become the most iconic boxer of the 1990s. Dubbed the “female Rocky” by producers, the untitled film follows Martin as she makes a name for herself in the squared circle.
Martin’s life changed dramatically in 1989 when she met her manager and later husband, Jim Martin. Her career blew up when she signed with fight promoter Don King, leading to an iconic cover story for Sports Illustrated. Has Sydney Sweeney found a sneaky way to get ripped and find an excuse to punch out anyone who gives her trouble? That remains to be seen, but she certainly appears ready to train to play noted female boxer Christy Martin in a new biopic from The King's David Michôd.
Written by Michôd alongside Mirrah Foulkes, the yet-to-be-titled biopic charts the rise of Martin, who grew up gay in a conservative family in small town Virginia. She turned to boxing as a way to be herself and channel her rage, and ended up America’s most well known female boxer in the 1990s. Her life transformed in 1989 when she met her manager, and later husband, Jim Martin. Breaking boundaries, she became the first woman to sign with iconic promoter Don King, and the only female boxer to appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated.

Freewheeling documentary presents a compelling if somewhat rambling portrait of the hardscrabble roots of many contenders
Admittedly, their freewheeling boxing documentary is a little rambling and understructured, but nevertheless director Steve Read and producer-narrator Robert Douglas (both Brits) end up making a compelling and illuminating mosaic about the sport by focusing on an eclectic range of figures, some interviewed on screen. The opening sequence, narrated by Douglas, starts with his personal recollections about how much watching boxing meant to him, especially as a biracial kid from the roughest parts of Liverpool. He ended up living in one of Philadelphia’s seamiest neighbourhoods where he felt right at home, and this leads into a portrait of young boxers at an inner-city Philly gym where training and competing have opened up whole new worlds for young men who otherwise might have been sucked into the violence of the streets.

Once it emerged that Justin Timberlake was returning to Saturday Night Live, it was inevitable that Barry Gibb would make an appearance.
Timberlake and Jimmy Fallon brought The Barry Gibb Talk Show back for its seventh appearance – over 10 years since it was last on the show.
Watch above.
As ever, the Tonight Show host and the former NSync star played Barry Gibb and his quiet brother Robin, who doesn’t have anything to add.
Continuing to use the Bee Gees’ “Nights on Broadway” as the basis for their parody, the Gibbs were joined by Bowen Yang, Keenan Thompson and host Dakota Johnson.
“You look like if Don King ate another Don King,” said Fallon’s Barry Gibb. “I fear nothing; I watched Saltburn with my entire family and I knew about the bathtub scene beforehand.”
“I am legend; I have not cried in 77 years except for Australian show Bluey,” he added.

Saturday Night Live opened with a music-themed spoof of former President Donald Trump‘s recent indictment.
Comedian James Austin Johnson portrayed Trump, saying, “It’s me, hi. I’m the problem,” referencing Taylor Swift‘s “Anti-Hero.” “Well, folks, I got indicted. Or as I spell it, indicated.”
Johnson then joked that he would be putting out an album of 30 covers to raise money from his supporters, adding he would need it for “commissary snacks” while in jail.
He then stated that the single “Justice For All,” a charity song by a group of about 20 men imprisoned for their involvement in the January 6 U.S. Capitol attack, was a hit, beating “Flowers” by Miley Cyrus. The real-life profits from the song were used for the legal aid of people incarcerated for the attack.
The skit continued with a string of cameos by other cast members playing known Trump supporters, including Kenan Thompson as boxer Don King,...

Class is back in session with “Abbott Elementary” creator and star Quinta Brunson, whose April 1 hosting debut on “Saturday Night Live” featured a comedic lesson on why she and her character, Janine Teagues, are actually nothing alike.
“I love that people are enjoying ‘Abbott,’ but I wish that they didn’t expect me to be exactly like my character all the time in public. Janine Teagues is a second grade teacher who is caring and wholesome, but I’m the opposite. I mean, I’m not a filthy whore but I like to have fun,” Brunson joked.
For viewers not familiar with Brunson, the actor provided a biting description of her acclaimed mockumentary series that caused an eruption of laughter among the crowd: “It’s a network sitcom, like ‘Friends,’ but instead of being about a group of friends it’s about a group of teachers, instead of New York...

This week’s “Saturday Night Live” cold open kicked off by addressing Donald Trump’s indictment, of course, with cast member James Austin Johnson’s spot-on Trump impression being put to good use as the former president performed various cover songs to fund his legal defense.

It’s been nearly 50 years since a southpaw from Philly went the distance with Apollo Creed. Back then it was a genuinely euphoric moment in cinema, so feel-good that Rocky over-performed at the box office and Oscars, beating out flicks like Network and Taxi Driver for Best Picture, and making Sylvester Stallone one of the biggest movie stars of his generation. Yet even the most elated audiences could scarcely predict how long a tail Balboa’s left hook would have.
Forty-six years on, the legacy of Rocky and Apollo grows with nine films and counting, including six Rocky movies and three Creed films, the latter about Apollo’s son Adonis (Michael B. Jordan). And as time passed, many of the installments have become as synonymous with their eras as, well, Rocky is with the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Hence we here at Den of Geek have put...

Don King was an easy character for Russell Hornsby to slip into — not just because the wig and costumes do a lot of work in putting on the persona of the infamous boxing promotor, but also because Hornsby, like King, is just as naturally bombastic. Hulu‘s Mike Tyson biopic, Mike, was unapproved by its subjects. Following the limited series’ release, the former heavyweight champion slammed the show on Instagram, saying, “They stole my life story and didn’t pay me.” How do you approach a role when the real person you’re playing isn’t available? Hornsby tells TV Insider it’s more than possible, as it’s about finding the humanity of the character. While he would have liked the chance to speak with the 91-year-old King, learning from YouTube videos of his time alongside the ring sufficed. Hornsby co-starred with Moonlight star Trevante Rhodes as Tyson in the eight-episode miniseries,...

It had to begin with the ear. For all Mike Tyson’s myriad achievements, his scandals and crimes, his knockouts and losses, he will always be remembered as the man who bit Evander Holyfield’s ear off. It is with this visceral image that Mike, a new TV drama miniseries on Disney Plus, begins. After a quick glimpse at the money shot, such that it is, Mike rewinds to the early Seventies, when Tyson was a child. From there, we follow him through his life, ducking and weaving between his painful upbringing, his rise to become world heavyweight boxing champion, and his downfall.
Most people will be familiar with the gist of Tyson’s story. The way he dominated in the ring. His prison sentence after being convicted of rape. His facial tattoo. His pet tiger. Mike isn’t that interested in the tabloid eccentricities of Tyson’s life – but...

Fans of the franchise mainly hate Rocky V. It took the triumph of Rocky IV and turned it into a tragedy for the Italian Stallion, with him suffering a potentially deadly injury due to his bout with Drago. Wiped out financially thanks to Paulie (who else?), Rocky, Adrian (Talia Shire – in her last entry in the saga) and Robert (Sage Stallone) have to relocate to Philly, where Rocky takes over Mickey’s old gym. There he finds a prospect, Tommy Gunn (the late Tommy Morrison), who he can turn into a contender, only for ego and a Don King-like promoter to get in the way, concluding in a ridiculous street fight. Stallone has slammed the movie over the years, but is it as bad as all that?

"Mike," which premiered on Hulu on Aug. 25, tells the story of Mike Tyson, played by Trevante Rhodes. The show separates Tyson's life into categories that also serve as episode titles: thief, monster, lover, jailbird, cannibal. Tyson has been associated, in so many words, with all of these labels during his lifetime, along with many others. To tell his story is to tangle with those contradictions - and to face off with a legacy that threatens to obscure the man at the heart of it all.
The real-life Tyson has often provoked strong emotions among the general public, from reverence to disdain. "Mike" doesn't try to frame Tyson's story through any particular lens, though. It's more interested in laying the character bare and in getting to the heart of what made him who he is. Rhodes's Tyson spends a lot of the show narrating his own life story, smiling and...

In “Mike,” blood, sweat, and probably a few tears splatter off the faces of Mike Tyson’s opponents in the ring. One after another, they’re hit with his explosive left hook, their cheeks ricocheting off their jaws before they topple dramatically to the ground. Hulu’s limited series, helmed by Steven Rogers and Craig Gillespie, slows these moments down, intent on displaying the physical impact of Tyson’s superhuman strength on the body. This sheer power, coupled with a steadfast dedication to the art of boxing is what made him the youngest heavyweight champion of the world, in 1986, at just 20 years old, catapulting him into history and pop culture stardom.

Plot: Mike is an unauthorized and no-holds-barred look at the life of Mike Tyson – and it is one wild ride. The 8-episode limited series explores the tumultuous ups and downs of Tyson’s boxing career and personal life – from being a beloved global athlete to a pariah and back again. Focusing the lens on Mike Tyson, the series examines class in America, race in America, fame and the power of media, misogyny, the wealth divide, the promise of the American Dream and ultimately our own role in shaping Mike’s story.
Review: Mike Tyson is a divisive and controversial figure in pop culture. For sports fans, he remains one of the most exciting and talented boxers to ever wear the heavyweight championship belt. For some, he is the hilarious cameo that made The Hangover one of the biggest hits of 2009. For still others, he is a convicted rapist with a...

When it comes to “authorization,” Hulu’s Mike Tyson limited series Mike was damned if it did, damned if it didn’t, and probably shouldn’t have bothered at all.
Mike Tyson is pissed off that Mike, created by Steven Rogers and showrun by Karin Gist, was created without his “authorization,” loading up on accusations of racism against the Disney-owned streamer. The biggest problem with Mike, naturally enough, is that it’s far too generous to its unauthorized subject and, realistically, it’s hard to imagine anybody making a more sympathetic story about the former heavyweight champion and convicted rapist.
Mike isn’t some total puff piece, but it’s way more invested in trying to understand Mike Tyson and the things he has either admitted to doing or been convicted of doing than in actually depicting those things and letting the audience draw their own conclusions.

Mike Tyson is a figure with unusual voltage, a celebrity who fought for his spot in the firmament with a weaponized charisma. The champion boxer is relentless even by the standards of the sport, with the famous incident in which he bit the ear of Evander Holyfield casting a shadow over his achievements. Outside the ring, he’s simultaneously known for a surprising soft-spokenness that makes the listener want to lean in and for a tendency toward violence — including a 1992 conviction for the rape of Desiree Washington — that repels.
A serious reckoning with Tyson’s place in our culture, in the currently on-trend format of dramatized retelling via limited series, would deal with both sides of the Tyson image, and the complicated ways they feed each other — the fact that the allure of Tyson is bolstered by our sense of him as threatening. This is not the path that Hulu’s new series “Mike” takes.

Hulu’s “Mike” takes yet another look at the life of embattled boxing champion Mike Tyson, and series creator Steven Rogers told television reporters on Thursday he hopes the athlete, who has criticized the show, may change his opinion if he gets a chance to see it.
“I would hope that if he watches it, that he would change his opinion,” Rogers said during Thursday’s Television Critics Association summer tour panel for the upcoming show.
Shortly after the project, which stars “Moonlight” breakout Trevante Rhodes as the embattled boxer, was announced, Tyson slammed the series, calling it “a prime example of how Hulu’s corporate greed led to this tone-deaf cultural misappropriation of my life story” in a now-deleted Instagram post. He followed up a few days later with the announcement of another project about his life, in which Jamie Foxx will portray him, calling the biopic the “authorized” version.

"You gotta be the meanest fighter God ever created." Hulu has unveiled the full-length official trailer for an incredible new sports biopic series titled Mike, about the infamous boxer Mike Tyson. This looks like a knock out! "Mike is an unauthorized and no-holds-barred look at the life of Mike Tyson – and it is one wild ride." This is from the same team that made I, Tonya, featuring Craig Gillespie directing episodes, and Steven Rogers writing the script - which seems like the perfect filmmaking team to handle this story. I don't think they will shy away from how abusive he is, which is an honest part of his character. Trevante Rhodes (from Moonlight) stars as Mike, with a main cast including Harvey Keitel as boxing coach Cus D'Amato, Scott MacDonald, Suzette Lange, Laura Harrier as Robin Givens, plus Russell Hornsby as Don King. I'm definitely planning to fire this up when it's out on Hulu.

“You know Tyson, but do you know Mike?” Trevante Rhodes transforms into Mike Tyson in Hulu‘s Mike, which dropped its official trailer July 20. The video dives into the infamous boxer’s childhood, teen, and adult years, tracking his rise. Rhodes plays like adult Tyson, like he played the adult Chiron in Moonlight. He’s joined by Russell Hornsby as infamous boxing promoter Don King, Laura Harrier as actor Robin Givens (who was briefly married to Tyson), Harvey Keitel as Cus D’Amato (a famous boxing manager and trainer), and Li Eubanks as Desiree Washington, the woman who accused Tyson of sexually assaulting her in 1991. Johnny Alexander plays Evander Holyfield (pictured above), with Olunike Adeliyi as Lorna Mae (Tyson’s mother) and B.J. Minor as Teen Mike. The eight-episode limited series premieres August 25. Now, he is jumping into the ring to make his limited series debut for Hulu’s “Mike,” an eight-episode series about the tumultuous professional and personal ups and downs of heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson. Watch the trailer below.
“People just see an animal. They call me a savage. I’m the most vicious, ruthless champion there’s ever been. No one can match me,” Rhodes’ Kid Dynamite says in the intense trailer. “My style’s impetuous. I’m ferocious. I want your heart. I want to eat your children. Praise be to Allah.”

Once they decided to pursue the Williams family’s story, the Whites proceeded to do just about everything right. In Hollywood, this is rare.
Here are the ways the White brothers delivered an entertaining, authentic, and uplifting movie that Warner Bros. is pushing for the Best Picture Oscar.

The weight of stepping into the shoes of real people is not lost on Russell Hornsby. The prolific actor can currently be seen portraying Charles Flenory, the late patriarch in the 50 Cent produced Starz drama Bmf. Inspired by a true story, the series travels back to the 1980s and southwest Detroit, where Charles’ young sons Demetrius “Big Meech” Flenory (played by real son Demetrius Flenory Jr.) and Terry “Southwest T” Flenory (Da’Vinchi) turn their business aspirations into what would become the Black Mafia Family—one of the most prominent drug trafficking organizations in America. The busy star also delves into what we can expect from his turn as boxing promoter Don King in Hulu’s Iron Mike series and his recurring role in Season 3 of Netflix’s Lost in Space. Russell Hornsby has been cast as Don King in the upcoming Hulu limited series about Mike Tyson, “Iron Mike,” Variety has learned exclusively.
Hornsby joins previously announced series lead Trevante Rhodes, who will play Tyson. The series is said to be an exploration of the wild, tragic and controversial life and career of Tyson, one of the most polarizing figures in sports culture. Production on the eight-episode series is currently underway.
The King character is described as ruthlessly ambitious with a flashy personality. He is a notorious boxing promoter that takes Tyson’s boxing career to the next level. He’s a businessman; strategic, resilient, knowing how to work everything in his favor. However, much of his arrogance might be hiding a deeper vulnerability. Since 1989, The Simpsons has built a massive roster of recurring characters, but what about the one-time greats of Springfield?
This article comes from Den of Geek UK.
Since the first episode of The Simpsons aired in 1989, the show’s central cast of characters has expanded from Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie to a roster of hundreds of instantly recognizable recurring characters. But as part of its singularly frenetic sitcom style, there are plenty of characters that never play a part in more than one episode.
In compiling a list of these great one-episode wonders, the show’s longevity makes it harder than you’d think. Characters who are most memorable for their first episodes, like Mindy Simmons, Hollis Hurlbut, and Mr Bergstrom, have all recurred in more recent episodes in one form or another, and so we haven’t featured them in the following round-up.

Alec Baldwin’s Donald Trump faced down the threat of impeachment in Saturday Night Live‘s Season 45 cold open.
Despite Baldwin’s insistence that he was “so done” with playing the president on SNL, the show opened with the actor’s Trump phoning his accomplices – Kate McKinnon’s Rudy Giuliani, Beck Bennett’s Mike Pence, Aidy Bryant’s William Barr – to fret about the Ukraine scandal.
Baldwin’s Trump eventually dials up Kim Jong-un (played by new cast member Bowen Yang) to ask how the North Korean dictator would “deal with a whistleblower.

“Saturday Night Live” finally kicked off its 45th season this week, and it began they same way many episodes have over the past four seasons: with Alec Baldwin playing Donald Trump.
This time, Baldwin’s Trump was very concerned with the whole impeachment situation, and so he spent the seven-minute sketch calling folks up from the Oval Office as he attempted to find someone do make the impeachment thing go away.
What followed was a fast and furious sequence in which it felt like the entire “SNL” cast made appearances — though, to be clear, it only felt like it.

The festivities began with Trump ringing up his personal attorney (and former NYC mayor) Rudy Giuliani, who was played here by “SNL” regular Kate McKinnon. They had probably the best interaction of the sketch, which went like this, starting with Giuliani asking Trump what’s going on.

After four months without Alec Baldwin and his Trump impersonations, Saturday Night Live kicked off season 45 by tackling the house impeachment inquiry of President Donald Trump
The cold open began with Baldwin’s Trump complaining to his attorney Rudy Giuliani: “I’m being impeached!”
