At some point I may stop sounding like a broken record, but for the moment, as a box office analyst covering the entertainment industry, it is hard not to hit the pessimism alarm. The summer season kicked off with an unfortunate whimper as Universal's very well-liked "The Fall Guy" opened to less than $30 million on opening weekend -- well below projections. That is, without exaggeration, the worst start to summer in decades. Sad to say, it isn't going to get any better any time soon. And I don't just mean through 2024. This past weekend, and other recent industry trends, have shown us that Hollywood has no clear, easy path forward. This summer merely seems like it's going to be illustrative of the larger problem.
Let's start with "The Fall Guy." We're talking about a movie starring Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt, coming off of "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer," respectively. Already well-liked stars,...

This article contains spoilers for "Dune: Part Two."
Denis Villeneuve's "Dune: Part Two" takes a few departures from Frank Herbert's original novel, perhaps most notably in the omission of Alia Atreides. Alia is Paul's young sister, born while he and his mother Jessica had survived the Harkonnen massacre and were hiding out with the desert-dwelling Fremen. In the book, Alia grows to toddlerhood supernaturally fast and already possesses a spate of eerie Bene Gesserit mental powers. She's also the one who, as a toddler, knifed the evil Baron Harkonnen to death.
Villeneuve figured that shooting in the desert with a toddler would be difficult and uncomfortable for a young actor, so he transformed Alia into a more abstract character. Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson) now has psychic conversations with the still-growing fetus inside her womb, while Paul (Timothée Chalamet) has a dreamlike vision of an adult Alia, seemingly contacting him from the future.

George Miller might have done it again. Nearly a decade after the Oscar-winning “Mad Max: Fury Road,” the director has returned to his post-apocalyptic world for “Furiosa,” and according to the early social media reactions, Miller delivers another incredible film. That said, perhaps not as great as ‘Fury Road.’
Now, before we get to sharing some of the reactions, it’s always important to preface this by saying social media reactions are not reviews.

The social media embargo just lifted for Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, and it sounds like filmmaker George Miller has done it again. Given his phenomenal pedigree, we aren't surprised; does the prequel improve on 2015's classic Mad Max: Fury Road, though?
That was always going to be a tall order and, based on what we see below, it doesn't quite match the rights of that gloriously demented ride. In its own right, though, Furiosa's origin story sounds like a worthy addition to the long-running series which kicked off with 1979's Mad Max.
Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth are receiving widespread praise for their work, with the latter's transformation once again making it clear there's more to him than playing the McU's God of Thunder in the Avengers and Thor franchises.
Tickets for Furiosa reportedly go on sale later today, so another trailer could be imminent. At the very least,...

If you want to become a dystopian feminist warrior, you’re not going to get much sleep. That was one of the first things Anya Taylor-Joy learned on the set of George Miller’s “Mad Max: Fury Road” prequel “Furiosa.” Under heavy coats of makeup, shooting in the Australian winter when daylight was scarce, Taylor-Joy wished she could have stayed in bed at least through the crack of dawn. Instead, she’d rise up in the middle of the night, ready to do battle.
“I had the earliest call time of my life: 1:45 a.m.,” the 28-year-old actress says on a recent Los Angeles afternoon. “I’d be like, ‘I just wrapped! What do you mean?! It’s a mistake!’” Taylor-Joy recalls the painful mornings now with a gleeful theater-kid energy. She chronicled her entire transformation as Furiosa, and took photos of her various makeup tests. She flips through her phone to show me.

Even after almost a decade, critics and audiences continue to heap praise on Mad Max: Fury Road. The 2015 sci-fi classic earns every accolade, from its subtle character work to its jaw-dropping visuals. But there’s one thing that cannot be said about Fury Road: that it has no CG.
True, director George Miller and his stunt team did many of the most impressive action sequences in-camera. But he did so with the assistance of computer graphics to erase the safety wires and other rigging. In other words, Miller has no problem using computer effects, provided that they don’t get in the way of the story he’s telling.

Between the hyper-violent car combat of Twisted Metal and Fallout’s familiar-looking Mysterious Stranger, it’s pretty clear that George Miller’s Mad Max franchise has been incredibly influential in the world of gaming. That’s why you might find it surprising that video games directly based on the adventures of Max Rockatansky have been notoriously difficult to get off the ground.
From Mindscape’s Outlander – which was supposed to have been an official Mad Max adaptation until the studio lost the license when the title was nearly complete – to the ill-fated Melbourne House project which would have been the first Australian-made game based on the franchise, telling an interactive Road Warrior yarn has never been easy.
In fact, only two officially licensed Mad Max games have ever seen the light of day. While the first one was simply a re-skin of 1988’s Road Raider, the second might just be...

George Miller’s “Furiosa” is already riding high with first reactions.
The prequel to 2015 film “Mad Max: Fury Road” stars Anya Taylor-Joy as the title character warrior in an epic saga that spans 15 years for her origin story. Per the official synopsis, a young Furiosa is kidnapped from the Green Place of Many Mothers and falls into the hands of a great Biker Horde led by the Warlord Dementus, played by Chris Hemsworth. As they trek across the Wasteland, the gang come across the Citadel presided over by The Immortan Joe. While the two Tyrants war over dominance, Furiosa faces many trials to find her way home.
While “Furiosa” is set to premiere at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival May 15, early screening first reactions have already gone viral. Both Taylor-Joy and Hemsworth’s respective performances are especially highlighted by critics.

The time has come for audiences to start witnessing George Miller’s newest action epic to see if it takes them to Valhalla or leaves them scrounging for food in the desert. The latest installment of the Mad Max saga spins off from Mad Max: Fury Road and sees Anya Taylor-Joy taking up the role from Charlize Theron. It had recently been confirmed that Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga will also be the franchise’s longest film, with the Cannes Film Festival website confirming its 2 hour and 28 minute runtime. While that means the film is significantly longer (by a half hour) than Fury Road, it’s worth noting that this prequel tells a truly epic tale that takes place over decades. Fury Road only took place over two days.

Did Shia Labeouf Just Side With Kendrick Lamar Amid Drake Beef? The Actor And Rapper’s Link Explored
Actor Shia Labeouf Seemingly Sides With Kendrick Lamar(Photo Credit –Facebook/YouTube)
In a May 6 post on X, Shia Labeouf appeared to side with Kendrick Lamar amid the rapper’s never-ending war of words with Drake. 2024 will be remembered as the year of one of the greatest lyrical battles between two rap titans, Kendrick Lamar and Drake. The decade-long feud between the rappers escalated over the weekend as the two continued to drop multiple diss tracks. Kendrick Lamar is currently leading the charts on Spotify and Apple.
As the battle raged on, sides were picked, and an overwhelming number of social media users declared Kendrick Lamar the apparent winner. They even dredged up old clips of former President Barack Obama picking Lamar to win in a rap battle over Drake. The first reactions are here for George Miller’s latest venture into the post-apocalyptic wasteland.
The embargo broke for social media reactions to Furiosa, the eagerly anticipated prequel to the 2015 stunner Mad Max: Fury Road.
This new entry has Anya Taylor-Joy as Imperator Furiosa (taking over for Charlize Theron) and Chris Hemsworth as a devious warlord in a story that takes place 15 years before the previous film.
Early social reactions (below) can sometimes be a bit different (typically more enthusiastic) than official critic reviews, and surely there are many more to come soon. But based on the first batch Monday evening, Furiosa is a visual stunner with “ferocious, wild and unrelenting” action and a story that “spans decades” and boosts strong performances from the two leads.
The question going into the movie’s Memorial Day weekend launch is whether Miller’s epic can jump start the Hollywood box office after a sluggish few months,...

A French collective representing the interests of French film festival workers has called for a general strike of “all employees of the Cannes Film Festival and of its sidebars.”
The Sous les écrans la dèche (Broke Behind the Screens) collective made the call in a public statement Monday.
The group has long been sounding the alarm about the precarious nature of film festival work, which typically involves short-term freelance contracts. But unlike other so-called intermediate workers in the entertainment industry, many festival workers are not covered by France’s unemployment insurance program, meaning they do not qualify for unemployment benefits in between jobs or projects.
The Sous les écrans noted that the latest set of benefit reforms, set to go through July 1, will further tighten the rules for employees.

With the release of The Fall Guy this weekend, the summer movie season is finally upon us. While it’s a thinner summer than usual due to the dual writer and actors strike bringing movies to a standstill for much of 2023, there should still be a lot of stuff worth checking out, even if the summer seems short of anything that can aspire to Barbenheimer levels of success. Yesterday, we teased some of our most anticipated horror movies, so now we’re tackling the rest of the blockbusters in our 2024 summer movie preview!

Sony’s animated “The Garfield Movie” scratched up $22 million in its international box office debut. It’s currently only playing in 18 markets, roughly 35% of its eventual overseas footprint, so those ticket sales represent a promising start for the family film.
“The Garfield Movie” doesn’t open in the U.S. and Canada until Memorial Day weekend on May 24. When it does land in domestic theaters, it’s projected to earn $35 million over the long weekend and will compete for first place with director George Miller’s “Mad Max” prequel “Furiosa.”
Overseas, “The Garfield Movie” enjoyed the biggest start in Spain with $3.2 million over five days, followed by Brazil with $2.2 million, Italy with $1.6 million and Peru with $1.3 million. According to the studio, revenues for the film are pacing 76% above fellow kid-friendly film “DC League of Super Pets” (which eventually earned $113 million internationally) and 41% higher than “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish...

‘Furiosa’ Composer Tom Holkenberg aka JunkieXL Teases Score with First Single, ‘Dementus Is Gaining’
We can already feel our theater seats shaking. This past Friday, “Furiosa” composer Tom Holkenberg (aka Junkie Xl) dropped a taste of his upcoming score for the film with the single, “Dementus Is Gaining”. The propulsive electronica track features a familiar trance-like beat that incorporates the sound of revving engines, but also has a noticeably more haunting quality than that of the score for “Mad Max: Fury Road”, implying a prequel that may have more of an emotional bite than its predecessor.
“My collaboration with the incredible George Miller began over a decade ago with our work on ‘Mad Max: Fury Road,’ a project that marked a pivotal moment in my career as a film composer,” says Holkenberg. “Returning to this world to score the odyssey of ‘Furiosa,’ an epic tale of survival, resilience and revenge has been just as eye-opening and gratifying. ‘Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga’ is a...

Chris Hemsworth and Anna Taylor-Joy posed at the Australian premiere of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga in Sydney on Thursday.
Taylor-Joy stole the show in a spiked-filled gold dress from Paco Rabanne’s spring/summer 1996 collection. Hemsworth wore a plaid suit and a silky black shirt.
They both star in Furiosa, a post-apocalyptic film directed by George Miller, which is the latest installment of the Mad Max series.
On November 22, Hemsworth found out that he has a high risk of Alzheimer’s on the National Geographic series Limitless.
“The idea that I won’t be able to remember to live the life I’ve experienced or my wife, my kids, this is probably my biggest fear,” he said on the show.
Hemsworth is known for his role as Thor in the film series and is the older brother of Liam Hemsworth.

When a prequel to 2015’s runaway (or is that drive away?) hit Mad Max: Fury Road was announced, we knew there had to be a wealth of new characters. And Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga has made good, with Chris Hemsworth and Tom Burke being the most notable additions – outside of Furiosa herself, Anya Taylor-Joy, of course.
Chris Hemsworth has spoken about his character, Warlord Dementus, at length before, calling him “a pretty horrible individual”, something Hemsworth isn’t entirely used to. Similarly, Tom Burke had a challenge ahead of himself on the opposite side of the spectrum, as he was approached by Furiosa director George Miller with the “noble” and “heroic” Praetorian Jack.

Similarly, Tom Burke had a challenge ahead of himself on the opposite side of the spectrum, as he was approached by Furiosa director George Miller with the “noble” and “heroic” Praetorian Jack.

As George Miller turned heads in the film world by being able to churn out an insane action thrill ride that rivals his younger peers, many anticipate his return to the Wasteland with the Mad Max: Fury Road prequel, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. The trailers are already showing a great deal of sequences that look as if Miller remains in top form as Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth engage in his signature vehicular warfare.
And now, it seems like Furiosa will also be the franchise’s longest film, with the Cannes Film Festival website confirming its 2 hour and 28 minute runtime.
While that means the film is significantly longer (by a half hour) than Fury Road, it’s worth noting that this prequel tells a truly epic tale that takes place over decades. Fury Road only took place over two days. George Miller’s producing partner, Doug Mitchel, recently teased...

Drifting into the theatres with her car-stunt-heavy Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga on May 24, Anya Taylor-Joy once again brings her versatility and range to the big screen, to captivate her audiences. Playing the younger version of Imperator Furiosa in the Fury Road prequel film, Taylor-Joy proved herself to be a force to be reckoned with.
Anya Taylor-Joy as Imperator Furiosa in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga
However, despite performing high-octane stunts and driving at breakneck speeds, Anya Taylor-Joy dropped an ironic anecdote while sitting beside co-star Chris Hemsworth for the EW cover story. Although Taylor-Joy did a convincing performance behind the wheel, the actress admitted to not owning a driver’s license. But fear not, Hemsworth has the perfect plan for her.

On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: Justice for Lori Petty!
One of cinema’s greatest action heroes is a fiercely feminist freedom fighter captured by an oppressive regime controlling the water supply of a post-apocalyptic landscape. Seeking revenge after her family was ripped from her, the heroine escapes the grasp of the army by stealing a vehicle of war, and ventures across the vast post-punk deserts of Australia with the ultimate goal of eventually slaying the white-haired tyrant who ruined her life.
No, I’m not talking about Furiosa, Charlize Theron’s iconic badass in “Mad Max: Fury Road.

Moviegoing remains in a sling, evident in Universal’s The Fall Guy currently coming in lower than expected with $28M this weekend. Perhaps Furiosa and Garfield can bring some zing over Memorial Day weekend at the end of the month.
Both hit three-week tracking Thursday, with the Warner Bros/Village Roadshow Mad Max prequel eyeing a $40M-$50M domestic opening over the Friday-Monday span of May 24-27 with Sony/Alcon Entertainment’s Garfield at $35M.
Earlier this week, some box office prognosticators believed it would be a closer race between the two at $30M+ apiece over four days, with the orange cat voiced by Chris Pratt having the edge. But George Miller’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Prequel, starring Anya Taylor-Joy, has the firepower of Imax and PLFs and a Cannes Film Festival world premiere as a global loudspeaker.

There's a case to be made that Chris Hemsworth is the most talented of the Marvel Studios Chrises. He's got great comedic energy and leaned into that with his later performances as Thor (even if he admittedly went overboard in "Thor: Love and Thunder"). His vengeance-driven God of Thunder is the highlight of "Infinity War" too.
He's also making interesting career choices. I'm a Captain America fan, but Chris Evans has not challenged himself as an actor since "Snowpiercer." ("Knives Out" was just him dusting off his pre-Cap screen persona of a cocky a-hole.) Chris Pratt has waltzed his way into being Hollywood's leading voice actor despite his anonymous performances in "The Super Mario Brothers" and soon, "The Garfield Movie." Hemsworth takes paycheck gigs (see: "Extraction" and his voice acting turn as young Optimus Prime in "Transformers: One" this coming Summer), but he shows ambition too. Tom Hardy, keep your phone off silent — you may soon be getting a call from George Miller.
Miller told Entertainment Weekly that he has written another “Mad Max” prequel film set one year before the events of 2015’s “Mad Max: Fury Road,” which starred Hardy as the title character.
The upcoming prequel installment, “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” which will premiere at Cannes, has Anya Taylor-Joy as a younger version of warrior Furiosa after Charlize Theron originated the character in “Fury Road.” The script for “Furiosa” was birthed out of the pre-production process for “Fury Road.”
“In doing what we did in the preparation of ‘Mad Max: Fury Road,’ we also wrote what happened to Max in the year before we encounter him in [that film],” Miller said.
In fact, the possible Mad Max-character’s origin story could overlap with the events of “Furiosa.”

Chris Hemsworth wanted to go “mad” years ago, before his Marvel reign had gotten off the ground.
The “Thor” actor revealed to Entertainment Weekly that he actually auditioned to play Mad Max in 2015’s “Fury Road.” Now, he stars in the upcoming prequel film “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” playing villain Dementus.
Hemsworth tried to audition for George Miller’s “Fury Road” shortly after parting ways with Australian soap series “Home and Away” but he”couldn’t even get a call or a meeting or anything” about playing Mad Max.
“I just hadn’t done enough to warrant that,” Hemsworth said. And while Tom Hardy landed the part, Hemsworth was even more determined to work with director Miller after watching the completed film…and having had his own career soar thanks to the MCU.

Before I begin, let's just get this out of the way and admit that Marvel's "Thor" and "Furiosa" star Chris Hemsworth is an absolute hunk. I don't know what's in the water in Australia, but all variants of the Brothers Hemsworth are all dreamboats in their own way. Chris in particular looks like what happens when a 10-year-old makes a custom character in a superhero video game, which is why so many people were shocked to see his face transformed with prosthetics to play Dementus in "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga."
His luscious locks were now matted with dust and filth, his facial bone structure was thickened to give him a more historical Roman look, and his megawatt smile now showed the wear and tear of living in a post-apocalyptic wasteland. Don't get me wrong, Hemsworth can obviously still get it and this character will undoubtedly join Walton Goggins' Ghoul...

Chris Hemsworth is totally unrecognizable in his makeup and costumes in George Miller’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. The actor spent hours in the makeup chair each day, even donning a prosthetic nose and transforming himself into Dr. Dementus. The loud villain is far different from his Marvel character Thor, however, Hemsworth can’t seem to shake off one choice of attire for both roles. His Furiosa character also has to wear a cape, which he finds so impractical.
Chris Hemsworth was forced to wear a cape for his role as Dr. Dementus in Furiosa
Hemsworth grew up watching Mel Gibson’s original Mad Max movies and even desired to take over when Gibson moved on from the franchise. While the lead role in Fury Road eventually went to Tom Hardy, Miller was struck by Hemsworth when he auditioned him for the role of Dementus.

It's been close to a decade since Mad Max: Fury Road revved into theaters, and with Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga fast approaching, excitement for the movie is understandably through the roof.
George Miller isn't known for rushing his movies, of course, but after coming up with the idea for Furiosa on the set of its 2015 predecessor, we've now learned that he has yet another idea to expand the post-apocalyptic franchise.

Exclusive: Chris Evans, Anya Taylor-Joy, Salma Hayek Pinault and Brendan Fraser will star in Sacrifice, a film co-written and to be directed by Romain Gavras. Like his last film Athena that premiered last Venice and was released on Netflix, Sacrifice has a similar combustible and propulsive anarchy coursing through the film.
This is closer to satire, but the script by Gavras and Will Arbery was strong enough to compel the leads to commit over the span of four days since the script was sent to talent. More actors will be set shortly, and I expect that the project — CAA Media Finance is selling the world with Rocket Science — won’t have a lot of territories left by the time buyers hit the Croisette. All the elements are there to launch Gavras as a major writer-director, here making his first English-language film.

Without question, one of the most anticipated movies of the summer is "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga." Serving as a prequel to 2015's action masterpiece "Mad Max: Fury Road," director George Miller is finally back nearly a decade later to deliver the long-promised fifth entry in his legendary franchise. This time around, we have a familiar hero in Furiosa, now played by Anya Taylor-Joy ("The Queen's Gambit"), facing off against a new villain in Dementus, played by Chris Hemsworth ("Thor"). For Hemsworth, in particular, playing the villain in the latest "Mad Max" film was a scary prospect.

T.S. Eliot, box office pundit: The wasteland of April was the cruelest month for theaters. To say May will be an improvement damns with faint praise; April was less than $440 million, down 52 percent from 2023. What May really needs is a performance not unlike the one we saw a year ago, when “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” lead the month to just under $800 million total.
To achieve that in 2024, there are five films that must reach their potential. All are positioned to reach $100 million in U.S./Canada, although not necessarily by the end of May.
Perhaps the trickiest one to guess is the “The Fall Guy” (Universal). It has the best start-of-summer date, stars the red-hot Ryan Gosling, and received good reviews, yet the consensus among a range of insiders is it may be only the fourth biggest among May releases.

Of all the roles Charlize Theron has donned to date, perhaps none comes as close to playing Furiosa in the Mad Max saga. That being said, fans also awaited for her to reprise her iconic role and return to the screens in character for the upcoming prequel and spin-off based on her character’s name. However, things went a bit downhill for her for Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.

While there was a chance for her to star as the noted character in this prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road as well, she instead had to give her up to Hollywood’s currently raging heartthrob Anya Taylor-Joy. And while the younger actress says Theron holds no hard feelings toward her because of the same, the one to blame for this decision is none other than the helmer of the saga, George Miller.

George Miller's upcoming postapocalyptic car chase movie "Furiousa: A Mad Max Saga" serves as a prequel to his 2015 actioner "Mad Max: Fury Road." In the 2015 film, Charlize Theron played Imperator Furiosa, a robot-armed truck driver who rescues a group of women from sexual enslavement. This new film is an origin story set about 20 years before the events of "Fury Road" wherein Anya Taylor-Joy plays the young Furiosa, who is kidnapped from her blissful childhood in the Green Place and held captive by a vicious gang called the Biker Horde. Both films are set in the futuristic car-centric Australian desert wastelands first conceived by Miller in 1979's "Mad Max," with "Furiosa" marking the fifth film in the "Mad Max" franchise overall.
Taylor-Joy, in wanting to keep her performance free from influence, deliberately didn't speak to Theron during production. Taylor-Joy had seen "Fury Road," of course, and revealed in an interview...

Meryl Streep will receive the honorary Palme d’Or on the opening night of the 77th edition of Cannes Film Festival, Variety has learned.
Luring the Oscar winner is yet another feat for this Cannes edition, which will bring together a flurry Hollywood legends. Notably, George Lucas will receive the honorary Palme d’Or during the closing ceremony; Francis Ford Coppola’s “Megalopolis” and Paul Schrader’s “Oh, Canada” are playing in competition; and George Miller‘s “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” and Kevin Costner’s Western epic “Horizon, an American Saga” are playing out of competition. Streep will be also in good company at the festival with “Barbie” director Greta Gerwig serving as jury president. The pair worked together on “Little Women.”
The honorary tribute will mark Streep’s long-awaited return to Cannes after decades. It appears that her last trip to the festival dates back to Fred Schepisi...

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga arrives in theaters laster this month, and as the press tour kicks off in Sydney, Australia (you can check out some photos of stars Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth below), Warner Bros. has shared a tonne of new promotional material for George Miller's Fury Road prequel.
In addition to a new international poster and still, we have three action-packed TV spots.
The spots reuse some footage from the previous teasers, but there is also quite a bit of new stuff, including a face-off between Furiosa and Dementus in which the Dark Angel prepares to test the warlord's "high pain threshold."
