20th Century has tapped Argentine director Pablo Trapero to direct an adaptation of Olen Steinhauer’s best-selling spy thriller “The Tourist,” TheWrap has confirmed. Neal H. Moritz and Toby Jaffe are producing.
The book’s plot is described as: “Milo Weaver has tried to leave his old life of secrets and lies behind by giving up his job as a ‘tourist’ for the CIA—an undercover agent with no home, no identity—and working a desk at the CIA’s New York headquarters. But staying retired from the field becomes impossible when the arrest of a long-sought-after assassin sets off an investigation into one of Milo’s oldest colleagues and friends.”
The original 2009 novel inspired three more sequels. It was not only a best-selling novel but also received heaps of praise, with Stephen King saying “The Tourist” was “the best spy novel I’ve ever read that wasn’t written by John le Carré.

In the trailer, which you can watch above, King plays a strong-willed princess whose father tries to force her to marry a cruel sociopath. When she refuses, she’s kidnapped and locked in a remote tower of her father’s castle.
That doesn’t stop her for long though, as she fights her way out of the tower, taking down every knight in her path. Set to the tune of Joan Jett’s “Bad Reputation,” King begins her takedown.
“I’m not a piece of property to be traded,” she says in the clip, adding: “But these guys f—ed with the wrong princess.”

Exclusive: On the basis of a script and four-minute promo reel, Netflix has won an auction and acquired world rights to The Starling, the Ted Melfi-directed drama that stars Melissa McCarthy, Kevin Kline, Chris O’Dowd and Timothy Olyphant. Sources said the deal is in the $20 million range and while that might not be the most ever paid for a film based on script and sizzle reel, The Starling has wet its beak in an exceptional manner, especially in a market like this one. It might portend a run on finished films that haven’t yet locked distributors.

Sony Pictures’ “Bloodshot,” a comic book movie and superhero thriller starring Vin Diesel, earned $1.2 million at the box office in its Thursday night previews beginning at 5 p.m. from over 2,631 screens. It opens on over 2,800 screens this weekend.
In second place among new releases and what was expected could be the biggest wide opening this weekend was “I Still Believe,” the faith-based movie from Lionsgate and Kingdom Story Company that earned $780,000 in previews. Behind that was Universal and Blumhouse’s provocative thriller “The Hunt,” which made $435,000.
All three films are opening a day after studios canceled and postponed a wave of tentpole movies meant to come out between this month and the middle of the summer over fears of the coronavirus, so time will tell just how much of an effect that will have on the remaining films at the box office.

The big screen adaptation of Valiant’s Harbinger was originally set up at Sony Pictures and there were initially plans for it to crossover with Vin Diesel’s Bloodshot film. Well, it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen because Paramount Pictures has snatched up the rights from Sony, and now they will be the ones developing the Harbinger movie.
Harbinger is a next-generation X-Men-esque storyline about a group of superpowered teens on the run from the Harbinger Foundation, an organization run by a mysterious philanthropist, Toyo Harada. They want to harness their abilities for its own ends.
Justin Tipping, who was attached to direct the film is still attached. He is working on the script with Joshua Beirne-Golden off an original draft by Eric Heisserer (Arrival). Producer Neal Moritz is also still attached to produce the film. In fact, he was the one that pushed for...

Syfy has opted not to renew Happy! for a third season and Deadly Class for a second. Both shows are based on graphic novels and both are being shopped. Happy! comes from Syfy sibling Ucp, while Deadly Class is from Sony Pictures TV, which co-produced with Ucp.
After a breakout first season for Happy!, linear ratings for the quirky comedy/drama series, starring Christopher Meloni and featuring the voice of Patton Oswalt, dropped sharply in Season 2. But the hybrid live-action/animated series reportedly has been doing well in its second window on Netflix where it is said to be the streamer’s top performing second window drama, besides You, in key male demos and teens. You also was not doing well in its first-window linear run (on Lifetime), leading to the drama becoming a Netflix original for Season 2. Happy! producer Ucp is shopping the show, and Netflix would be a natural home for it.

Sylvester Stallone’s 1993 actioner, Cliffhanger, is getting a female-fronted reboot, with a key Fast & Furious franchise producer onboard.
Cliffhanger may not be widely seen as an iconic Sylvester Stallone actioner, but the high-altitude intensity of the Renny Harlin-directed 1993 blockbuster reaped respectable box office rewards, banking $255 million worldwide off a $70 million budget – more than the $189 million made from Sly's then-recent franchise mainstay in 1988’s Rambo III, and certainly more than the $119.9 million earned by 1990 dud Rocky V. Indeed, Cliffhanger has its fans, notably Fast & Furious film franchise producer Neal Moritz, who’s now spearheading a female-fronted reboot effort.

In a zeitgeisty twist, the reimagined, big-canvas package will have a female lead — casting is underway — and a female director in the shape of Ana Lily Amirpour (A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night). Aquaman star Jason Momoa is talks for a key cameo.
Rocket Science will launch international sales on the hot prospect in Cannes after prizing rights away from StudioCanal in a competitive situation. The latter had tried to mount a remake a couple of times with Moritz in the past decade and it was a long negotiation to convince the French studio to part with the property given its strong box office potential.

Fox is going further into the sci-fi, mystery genre space with an adaptation of the graphic novel series, “Talent.”
The broadcaster has given a script plus significant penalty commitment to the one-hour drama, with an eye to hand the project a straight-to-series order from “Justified” creator Graham Yost, it was announced during the Television Critics Association press tour on Wednesday.
Here’s the official logline for the project: When Nicole Dane wakes up in a hospital, she learns she is the sole survivor of a tragic accident that claimed the lives of 148 people. As rumors around her “miraculous” survival begin to swirl, Nicole discovers she has inherited the talents of those who perished. Armed with these new abilities, she must use her second chance to bring closure to their unfinished stories and solve the mystery of the accident, all while trying to escape a past that continues to haunt her.

Fox is developing an adaptation of graphic novel Talent with Justified showrunner Graham Yost.
The broadcast network has partnered with Boom! Studios, the comic book publisher behind the graphic novel, Neil Moritz and his Original Films firm and Sony Pictures Television to develop it as a one-hour drama. Fox has committed to a script with a significant penalty with an eye on a straight-to-series order.
This comes after a number of attempts to turn the graphic novel, which was created by Christopher Golden and Tom Sniegoski, into a feature film. Fast & Furious franchise producer Moritz had previously eyed a big-screen adaptation, while the project was also previously set up at Universal Studios.

The network has ordered Talent, a series based off a limited run 2006 comic of the same name. Graham Yost of The Americans and Justified will write the pilot and produce alongside Neal Moritz, Pavun Shetty, Toby Jaffe, Stephen Christy and Ross Richie. Fox is describing the deal as including a pilot script with a significant penalty if its not picked up to series. In other words, it's highly likely that this will see the light of day.
