The German legend of The Pied Piper of Hamelin is the basis of two recent horror productions. The first of these “twin films” to receive a wide release is Erlingur Thoroddsen’s take, which shares the same title as Anthony Waller’s adaptation. And although both reimaginings feature demonic updates of that famous ratcatcher, only Thoroddsen’s story appears to underscore the musical component.
The Piper finds Charlotte Hope’s (The Nun) character Mel trapped in a familiar situation: her aspirations come at a great cost, and the consequences will be harmful. Here the young composer wants a future in her orchestra ensemble as well as the means to take care of her deaf daughter (Aoibhe O’Flanagan). Stealing a concerto from the estate of her recently departed mentor (Louise Gold) seems like the only option, but once the protagonist goes through with the plan, Mel’s conductor (Julian Sands) then...

‘Drag Me to Hell’ – New Australian Blu-ray Celebrates 15 Years of Sam Raimi’s Horror Return [Review]
Of all the masters of horror that helped to reshape the genre as we know it in the ’70s and ’80s, none were more successful in branching out and achieving commercial success within the studio system than Sam Raimi. His Spider-Man trilogy laid the groundwork for the influx of comic book movies that would follow, but he was eager to return to his roots following the third installment’s turbulent production.
Armed with $30 million and complete creative control, Raimi dusted off a story he wrote with elder brother and frequent collaborator Ivan Raimi back in the ’90s to make his triumphant return to horror with Drag Me to Hell in 2009. The Raimi broters seemingly drew inspiration from 1957’s Night of the Demon but injected it with a heavy dose of Evil Dead DNA, most closely evoking Evil Dead 2‘s cartoonish blend of over-the-top splatter and tongue-in-cheek humor.

Primetime Emmy-nominated composer Christopher Young has one hell of a resume in the horror world, lending his musical talents to fan-favorite films including A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge, Hellraiser, Hellbound: Hellraiser II, The Fly II, Tales from the Hood, Urban Legend, Drag Me to Hell, Sinister, and more recently 2020’s The Empty Man.
The legendary composer is back here in 2024 with Christopher Young’s Nosferatu – A Symphony of Horror, taking to Kickstarter to fan fund a Double CD release of his own award-winning orchestral score for the 1922 horror classic directed by F.W. Murnau.
The Kickstarter campaign previews, “In 2022, Christopher Young was engaged by Europäische FilmPhilharmonie to compose original music for the film in celebration of its 100th anniversary…the results were spectacular. Inspired by the story’s gothic DNA, Young composed what can only be described as a dramatic, visceral, and utterly terrifying response to the...

Back in June of 2021, it was announced that Julian Sands, best known around here for playing the Warlock in the 1989 horror film fittingly titled Warlock and then coming back for the sequel Warlock: The Armageddon, had signed on to star in a new genre project called The Piper, which puts a horrific twist on the legend of the Pied Piper. Sadly, it was only seven months later that we heard Sands had gone missing while hiking on California’s Mount Baldy. Six months later, his body was found. He did get to work on The Piper before he passed away, though, and the film is now ready to make its way out into the world. It’s set to receive a theatrical and digital/on demand release on March 8th, and with that date exactly one month away a trailer has arrived online. You can check it out in the embed above.

"She didn't want it performed!" Samuel Goldwyn Films & Tubi Films have revealed an official trailer for a supernatural horror film titled The Piper, a chilling tale of the Pied Piper. This initially premiered at the 2023 Screamfest Horror Film Festival last year, and it already opened in some European countries last fall. Set for a US release on VOD this March. When a young composer must finish her late mentor's concerto, she discovers that playing its music summons deadly consequences. Eerily enough, this is one of the final roles for British actor Julian Sands, who died in early 2023. His co-stars states: "The Piper is dark, creepy and kind of fun and his chilling portrayal of the orchestra's conductor had me genuinely terrified." The film also stars Charlotte Hope, Aoibhe O'Flanagan, and Oliver Savell. With a score by composer Christopher Young. This looks pretty scary, an orchestra horror fairy tale thriller. "If you hear it,...

Stars: Julian Sands, Charlotte Hope, Aoibhe O’Flanagan, Pippa Winslow, Philipp Christopher | Written and Directed by Erlingur Thoroddsen
What are the chances that two films called The Piper, both horror films involving the legend of The Pied Piper, would come out in the same year? And that both would be hard to see? While I haven’t seen the one starring Liz Hurley yet, I did get a chance to see the one written and directed by Erlingur Thoroddsen and featuring the late Julian Sands in one of his last roles.
It opens with the voice of Gustafson (Sands) on the phone trying to talk Katherine out of destroying the last copy of her Concerto for Children. She tells him “It is evil, no one must ever know about it” before rushing outside to try and burn it in her fire pit. But something with glowing eyes intervenes, and she burns while the manuscript survives.

Paul Kessler, a 69-year-old Jewish man, died on Monday after succumbing to injuries he sustained the day prior during an altercation over the Israel-Hamas war in Thousand Oaks, California. Authorities have confirmed they are investigating the incident as a homicide and possible hate crime, and said they’ve twice made contact with a suspect — once on the scene, and again during a traffic stop for a vehicle search.

Freshly announced this morning, Arrow Video is bringing the Hellraiser franchise to 4K Ultra HD with a brand new Hellraiser: Quartet of Torment Limited Edition 4K Uhd set.
The upcoming set features the following Hellraiser movies:
Hellraiser (1987) Hellbound: Hellraiser II (1988) Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth (1992) Hellraiser: Bloodline (1996)
The most exciting aspect of this release? Arrow’s Hellraiser: Quartet of Torment set features the newly uncovered Workprint Version of fourth installment Hellraiser: Bloodline!
This never-before-seen version of the 1996 sequel, directed by Kevin Yagher, “provides a fascinating insight into how it changed during post production.” The initial cut of the movie ran 110 minutes long, but the studio executives at Miramax demanded major changes that resulted in Yagher departing the project. The final cut ultimately ended up running 85 minutes long, and Yagher was so unhappy with the finished product that he took his name off the movie. That’s why Hellraiser: Bloodline is...

Debut feature Silent Roar, ‘a teenage tale of surfing, sex and hellfire’ takes the gala slot, marking a remarkable turnaround for the festival which appeared doomed to closure last October
The Edinburgh international film festival has announced the opening film for its 2023 edition, months after the shock news that the long-running event’s existence was in doubt after its organisers, Centre for the Moving Image (Cmi), shut down abruptly in October and called in administrators.
The festival’s high-profile opening gala slot has been handed to Silent Roar, the debut feature from director Johnny Barrington, produced by The Inbetweeners Movie’s Christopher Young. Described by the festival as “a teenage tale of surfing, sex and hellfire”, Silent Roar was filmed on the remote community of Uig, on Lewis in Scotland’s Western Isles and stars Louis McCartney and Ella Lily Hyland.

Last week, we heard the awesome news that the 1986 rock ‘n roll horror film Trick or Treat, one of my all-time favorite movies, is getting a Blu-ray and 4K Uhd release (and possibly a new DVD release) from Synapse Films. A specific date for this release has not yet been announced, just that they’re hoping to get it out into the world by the end of 2023 – and ideally, of course, it would be out in October. Synapse Films is collaborating with Michael Felsher of Red Shirt Pictures on this release, and now Felsher has revealed some details to Rue Morgue, confirming that we can expect to see a documentary, a commentary, and interviews on the disc.

Exclusive: David Morse (The Chair), Bill Heck (Locke & Key) and Jaklyn Bejarano have been set to star in Santa Rita Film Co.’s La Gloria, a drama exploring the humanity and political abstractions surrounding the U.S.-Mexico border. The latter came aboard following a nationwide casting search in Mexico.
The film set in South Texas, which is currently shooting in the area, follows the story of Carson Tidwell (Morse), an embittered and isolated rancher who mistakenly shoots a young, pregnant migrant girl named Irena (Bejarano) who is crossing his property. Confronted with his actions and threatened with a criminal investigation, Carson must decide whether to help Irena recuperate on his ranch or face criminal charges led by his son (Heck), an agent for the U.S. Border Patrol.
Christopher Young’s script is based on the personal experiences of Joseph Todd Walker, who is directing, in his feature debut.

Prior to reviewing the new installment in the long-running (35 years!) Hellraiser horror movie franchise, I did my due diligence. I rewatched all 10 prior films, from the acclaimed 1987 original and its 1988 sequel through the ensuing two theatrical and six direct-to-video entries. Throughout the marathon, I took copious notes, careful to track the characters and plot developments through their many permutations.
Nah, just kidding!
Sure, I saw the first two films back in the day, and may even possibly have caught 1992’s Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth and 1996’s Hellraiser IV: Bloodline. But by the time the series went straight to home video, I happily bailed out, not being the type to proudly possess a treasure trove of horror movie memorabilia in my basement. So for all you Hellraiser aficionados out there, apologies.

Hulu’s Hellraiser, a reimagining of Clive Barker’s 1987 horror classic from director David Bruckner, will debut in the U.S. exclusively on Hulu on October 7, and Bloody Disgusting has learned that Lakeshore Records will release the Hellraiser (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) on October 7 as well. And today we’re debuting an exclusive track from the score!
Ben Lovett composed the score for Hulu’s brand new Hellraiser movie, and the track you can listen to down below takes you deep inside the Puzzle Box. It’s titled, fittingly, “Blood Box.”

Ever since seeing Bloodline at the 2019 Popcorn Frights Film Festival, I've had its infectious, synth-infused soundtrack stuck in my head, as the original music by Trevor Gureckis is like its own character in the film, giving the serial killer story a deadly pulse that hearkens back to some of the most memorable collaborations between John Carpenter and Alan Howarth. With Bloodline—Original Motion Picture Soundtrack coming to digital via Lakeshore Records on September 20th (the same day the film will be released in theaters and on Digital and VOD by Momentum Pictures), we've been provided with an exclusive track from the film's score to share with Daily Dead readers.
Below, you can listen to the exclusive "Good Boy" track from Bloodline—Original Motion Picture Soundtrack ahead of its September 20th release from Lakeshore Records.

Author Stephen King is arguably one of the most well known and beloved writers. Often called the ‘King of Horror’, his work is familiar to countless audiences (be they avid readers or not) and he is the living author with the most film adaptations to his name. So it is no new event to see a King story being adapted for the screen again but after Andrés Muschietti’s record-setting success with 2017’s It: Chapter One (the eagerly awaited Chapter Two lands later this year), there is no doubt as feverish as ever a taste for some of the author’s stories to make the jump to the big screen. However, this is not the first time his 1983 novel Pet Sematary has being adapted for film, see Mary Lambert’s 1989 feature, but the story this time around is a little different from the source and the aforementioned movie.

The music of Christopher Young has terrified horror fans for years. Pet Sematary is now playing everywhere, and with it comes a spooky, atmospheric score from Christopher Young. That name will likely sound familiar to horror fans – he composed the music for Hellraiser, along with Sinister, Drag Me to Hell and more. Sometimes, horror movie scores can be a touch generic, relying heavily on loud stings. But Young’s Pet […]

The hottest trend in horror right now is Stephen King, and specifically, remakes of some of his seminal works. Most recently, It was a box office smash, which got the ball rolling. Now, we have a new Pet Sematary on our hands. A more efficient updating of the original film, it also makes enough changes to the story that we’re not just watching the exact same narrative play out over again. Bleak, creepy, and effective enough to recommend, it’s also not nearly as good as the early buzz out of SXSW this year suggested. It’s a decent fright flick but that’s about it. The movie is, of course, a remake of the adaptation of the Stephen King novel of the same name. The Creed family is looking for a slower paced life as they relocate to a small town in rural Maine from their busy Boston life.

Death affects people differently. Sometimes in unexpected ways. For some, coping with the inevitable is hard to even think about. For some, they are plagued by images of their loved ones now gone. For some, the outcome can’t be accepted and so denial sets in.
What death is and what death means and all the other complicated questions that arise from this thought process can lead to a gateway of ideas that are both fascinating and terrifying. While Stephen King’s classic novel deals with the many stages of death and grief, Pet Sematary (2019) is more interested in traveling down a path of cheap thrills and visual cues already presented in Mary Lambert’s 1989 film of the same name. Bringing to mind horror films from the early aughts, Kevin Kölsch and Dennis Widmyer’s remake is made up of tiny jump scares every five minutes – a filmmaking rule that...

John Collee (l) with Anthony Maras.
John Collee is not only among Australia’s most successful screenwriters, his strike rate of scripts-to-screen is the envy of most of his peers.
The co-creator of Happy Feet, Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, Tanna and Hotel Mumbai, Collee estimates that one in every three or four feature scripts he’s written has been produced.
He’s not boasting but his batting average compares well to that of Guillermo del Toro. The writer-director of The Shape of Water, Pan’s Labyrinth and The Hobbit trilogy recently revealed on social media he had spent years developing 10 films which did not get made.
“Sometimes projects can be taken off you and written by someone else and your name is taken off then, but to have involvement in one of three films I’ve written is a pretty good record,” Collee tells If.

All hail Film Ventures International. Long-time purveyors of cinematic sleaze and genre enchantment, they’ve produced or at least distributed some of my very favorite low budget wonders: Beyond the Door (1974), Grizzly (’76), The Incubus (1981), and Pieces (’82) are only some of their titles that have provided hours of entertainment, from the goofy to the sublime (which in their case, is often one and the same). One of their final releases, The Power (1984), is a good example of their often heady mix, and a solid springboard for directors Stephen Carpenter and Jeffrey Obrow on their way to their demented mutant mash The Kindred (’87).
Released in late January, The Power (Aka Evil Passage) didn’t do much business; playing in theatres for one weekend and bringing in just under a million dollars, head honcho Edward L. Montoro surely heading out the back door with a bagful of cash on his way to bankrupting the company.
