Review: 'Ruby-Spears Superman' on DVD

2 November 2009 8:44 AM, PST | Comicmix.com | See recent Comicmix news »

Superman did not do well as an animated series despite three different studios attempting to tell his stories. Filmation debuted as a competitor to Hanna-Barbera with the 1966 Superman series then H-b told their stories in Super Friends. It seemed they didn’t fully know how to challenge someone with the amazing powers.

By the late 1980s, Ruby-Spears was a well established company, best known for their Thundarr the Barbarian. In 1988, it was their turn to try their hand with the Man of Steel and tomorrow, Warner Home Video releases Ruby-Spears Superman , a two-disc set collecting the thirteen episodes from the one season series.

This series came out just two years after Superman had been revamped from top to bottom by John Byrne and Marv Wolfman in the pages of Superman, Adventures of Superman, and Action Comics. Most of the changes from the comics are not reflected here, the exception being »

Halloween Beasts of Horror: The Animals That Scare Us

22 October 2009 6:11 PM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

As the spookiest day of the year (Halloween) approaches, people start talking about what actually scares them the most. We’ve run several articles this month discussing horror films from multiple genres (Comedy, Sci-Fi, Thriller) and then we covered a list of “fun for everyone” Halloween films.

In too many instances people focus on the alien, zombie, ghost and slasher films to represent the horror genre - and while those are all truly frightening topics for films, I think that ultimately one of the scariest horror sub-genres often gets overlooked: Animals gone crazy!

Whether it’s by land, sea or air, creatures of every imaginable size and shape have terrorized us for decades. Some are exotic animals, others are extinct beasts brought back to life by the magic of Hollywood, while still others hit closer to home and make us question if we should even own a pet. Come join »

Exclusive Interview with Composer Claudio Gizzi

6 October 2009 1:14 AM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

In Paul Morrissey’s eccentric and utterly unhinged 1974 Eurotrash classic Blood For Dracula (often erroneously credited as the brainchild NYC art guru Andy Warhol), the opening imagery of Dracula (played by iconic German weirdo Udo Kier) painting his face kabuki white has always haunted me.  The sequence is the spine and soul of the picture, showing the good Count as a tired, lonely showman who has long been forgotten by time and by the audience he once terrified.

And as eerily gorgeous as that bit of credit crawling business is, it’s the delicate piano waltz playing in the background that truly sells it.

Like Morrissey’s 3D companion film Flesh For Frankenstein the music for Blood was composed by Italian musician Claudio Gizzi. It’s orchestral, elegant, full of melancholy mourning and sadness. And truthfully it’s that dichotomy between the excessive gore, sex and general insanity on screen with Gizzi’s sophisticated, »

Star Wars: In Concert Begins!

1 October 2009 6:39 PM, PDT | Manny the Movie Guy | See recent Manny the Movie Guy news »

I don't know about you, but I think John Williams is a god and he makes memorable music to fit any film he's working on. And the music he created for "Star Wars" was one of the excellent examples of the composer's brilliance.

Now, in a performance installation piece of some sorts, "Star Wars" fans are in for a treat! You'll see and hear the sights and sounds of the Luke Skywalker-Darth Vader soap opera -- amplified music and instrumentation, lasers, flames, smokes, and a giant high-definition Led screen will show clips from all Six movies, yes, even the not so good ones :happy

The nearly two-hour show will present the George Lucas creation in a rough chronological order but will also be grouped in different musical themes -- romance, drama, evil!

The elaborate production requires 12 semi truck to transport the show from one city to the next. After a »

Surrogates

Surrogates

Directed by: Jonathan Mostow

Cast: Bruce Willis, Radha Mitchell, Rosamund Pike, Ving Rhames

Running Time: 1 hr. 28 mins

Rating: PG-13

Release Date: September 25, 2009

Plot: In a not-too-distant future, planet earth is virtually run by robots standing in for human beings. Though everything seems to be going smoothly, a (very) rare homicide throws the cybernetic utopia for a (very) unexpected loop. Answers are sought, but this time its the human instinct that’s called upon to find them.

Who’s It For? Fans of Minority Report, and those who feels Bruce Willis is the player they’d most want with the ball and the game on the line… er… actor most suited to save the world.

Expectations: This film didn’t look like an Oscar winner in its trailer, so I wasn’t expecting a revolutionary tale regarding the oft-recycled premise of man v. machine. Still, there was some hope that »

New Twitter Avatars, Warwick Davis And A Busy Day For 'Eclipse' In Today's Twitter-Wood

18 September 2009 3:30 PM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Warwick Davis has only gotten cooler in my eyes since I started following his Twitter account. The "Harry Potter" and "Willow" star apparently set up a laser tag match this week with John Williams' "Star Wars" score playing in the background, which sounds like quite the celebration of sci-fi geekdom.

It was also a relief this morning to read that I wasn't the only one seeing little bird-shaped, multicolor avatars everywhere when I logged in to Twitter. Diablo Cody and Richard Kelly experienced the same thing with reactions similar to my own. If you know what I'm talking about, or want to find out, click on down below and read their posts, along with Peter Facinelli's exhausting end-of-day tweet from the "Eclipse" set and a Selena Gomez Alma Award pic for all you "Wizard of Waverly Place" fans. They're in the Twitter-Wood report for September 18, 2009.

Robot Movie ‘Real Steel’ Gets New Director

17 September 2009 8:41 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Earlier this week, we talked about director Peter Berg’s upcoming movie plate being fuller than a Biggest Loser contestant standing in a buffet line before going on the show. With his involvement on Battleship, Hancock 2 and now Dune,  Berg will be busy for the better part of the next 6 years - so it’s no wonder that DreamWorks recently announced Berg stepping aside on the robot boxing movie Real Steel.

Who do you think they choose to replace him? None other than the Mr. Cotton Candy himself, Shawn Levy. You may remember Levy from such cinema greats as The Pink Panther, Just Married, Big Fat Liar, and Cheaper by the Dozen. He also directed both Night at the Museum films, the first being great; the second was fun but didn’t live up to the first. Now, before you say I’m not giving the guy a chance, »

Very Early Praise for John Williams' 'Tintin' Score

5 September 2009 2:16 AM, PDT | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

As you probably know, composer John Williams goes back a long time with Steven Spielberg. He has written some of the most memorable scores of all time - Jaws, Raider of the Lost Ark, Superman, and Star Wars leap to mind - and some of his most successful pieces are for Spielberg films.

They're working together again on Tintin, and Williams' orchestrator, Conrad Pope, recently talked to the John Williams Fan Network about the film's score. He leaves very little doubt about his feelings toward the new project, either.

"It will become a classic, I think," admitted Pope. "To give more information would be to reveal things that I don't think Jw would want to say." »

Hollywood Bokeh: The Day the Music Died

1 September 2009 9:05 PM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

Film and TV is a unique medium in that it is usually comprised of a combination of disciplines: Literature, photography, design, theater and music, just to name a few. All these aspects work in tandem in service to the larger picture to provide an all-encompassing artistic experience.

Music, like any other artform has a tendency from time to time re-invent itself. Constantly challenging what has come before, and discovering new means of expression. Often, we can tell the period from which a piece has been composed simply by its stylistic choices: the jazzy '60s, the disco '70s, the techno '80s... and so on.

Film music has always had an important part in the overall emotional impact of a movie. Whether it takes the back seat in providing an aural landscape, or front and centre with sweeping musical themes. Some may argue that music, when it services the film correctly, »
