Critics are also divided on whether Loser lives up to its name or is in fact a winner. Joe Morgenstern in the Wall Street Journal refers to it as "this endearing youth comedy" and applauds writer-director Amy Heckerling (Clueless, Fast Times at Ridgemont High) for exhibiting a "rare combination of a sharp wit and a sweet spirit." On the other hand, Lou Lumenick in the New York Post calls the film "mind-numbingly witless, " Mike Clark in USA Today, "tepidly tolerable, " Jan Stuart in Newsday, "formulaic, " and Jack Mathews in the New York Daily News, "dramatically flat" and "idiotically broad." Chris Vognar in the Dallas Morning News takes a middle ground. "Amy Heckerling has made one of her least memorable films to date, " he writes, "yet Loser still manages to stand above the competition."
