Sr Pick [Video]: The Dark Knight is Confused Rap

31 December 2009 4:19 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

The popular Barely Political channel on YouTube has a series of hilarious parody videos about geek culture, pop culture and internet celebrities. In their Key of Awesome series -- which regularly garners over a hundred thousand views, sometimes in the millions -- they put up an awesome music video which pokes fun at the biggest comic book movie of all time: The Dark Knight.

The episode is titled “The Dark Knight is Confused” and stars Batman himself alongside Alfred and The Joker with a funny intro from Commissioner Gordon and his son. This is a must-watch; Batman’s beginning to wonder if his movie makes sense…

Key of Awesome episode #8:

I laughed out loud a few times while watching this and I applaud the folks at Barely Political for their creativity and work put in this and the other videos they have up. And much respect to Mark Douglas »

What Did You See Over Christmas?

28 December 2009 3:47 PM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Spent the weekend with food, friends and a stack of DVDs. At the movie theater I tried to see Avatar a second time but failed (I'm holding out for the IMAX experience but it's eternally sold out... at least for people like me who don't plan things weeks in advance). We went to Sherlock Holmes since you have to see a movie with friends and family on Christmas day. It's tradition. And judging on the box office results (biggest Christmas weekend ever) I assume that's tradition for just about everyone.

Avatar $75 (for a $212 total)

It's already earned over $600 million worldwide so it looks like they won't lose their shirts, even with that unthinkably monstrous budget. The world's most important question [cough] right now is this: Will James Cameron make us wait 12 more years for his 9th film? And will it be a sequel to this one? He does like the number 2s. »

New ‘Inception’ Trailer Folds Cities (!)

28 December 2009 12:00 PM, PST | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

Warner Brothers released a new trailer today for next summer’s mega-blockbuster, Inception.  In said trailer, A City Is Folded In Upon Itself.  This, of course, is Christopher Nolan’s follow-up to The Dark Knight, and as such is arguably the most-anticipated movie of next year.  With that said, the trailer doesn’t give away much else about the film, but it does make the film look even more compelling than the first teaser.  Perhaps it’s the brief glimpses of Lukas Haas.  Perhaps it’s Nolan’s re-purposing of Spielberg’s Jurassic Park water glass.  Nah, it’s The City Folding In Upon Itself.

A particular stand-out of this trailer is Hans Zimmer’s Epic score, which sounds suitably massive for a film in which, at one point, A City Is Folded In Upon Itself.

Inception, still starring the freaking unbelievably incredible cast of Leonardo DiCaprio, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ellen Page, »

Sherlock Holmes Movie Review

27 December 2009 8:00 PM, PST | MoviesOnline.ca | See recent MoviesOnline news »

Rare is the actor whose genuine screen presence can be enough to generate my interest. Clooney's got it, for sure, but his choices of films are more to my tastes. Robert Downey, Jr, has that rare presence that's always welcome in a film, and because of his Iron Man clout, he's become the go-to guy to get tentpoles off the ground. And thank Odin he was cast as the titular lead in Sherlock Holmes, because there is no way this movie would work without him.

Granted, a lot of help comes from his chemistry with Jude Law. I'd wager that if anyone else were in these roles, even with Downey or Law remaining in place, that they would be unable to carry this film. The two performances, in their back-and-forth bromantic manner, lend the film much needed goodwill, and turn what could have been a truly spectacularly terrible film idea »

Review: Sherlock Holmes

25 December 2009 7:57 AM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

It’s best to distance yourself from notions of what you expect from a Guy Ritchie film and instead think of this as a vigorous adaptation of the iconic detective, fronted by an actor whose charisma, wit and strong physical presence makes this film a joy to behold.

Guy Ritchie has made an entertaining and exciting film, faithful to the core of the original rather than the accepted iconography of the enduring detective. To paraphrase the tagline of a recent, and successful, reinvention: this is not your father’s Sherlock Holmes.

Determined to avoid the narrative restraints of an origin story this film begins with Watson, Holmes and the familiar miscellany of Conan Doyle’s characters in play. Opening with a baroque action set piece Holmes and Watson apprehend Lord Blackwood in the throes of bloody, ritualistic murder. Lestrade and his forces turn up too late and what could have »

It’s Complicated

25 December 2009 5:00 AM, PST | The Scorecard Review | See recent Scorecard Review news »

It’s Complicated

Directed by: Nancy Meyers

Cast: Meryl Streep, Alec Baldwin, Steve Martin, John Krasinski

Running Time: 2 hrs

Rating: PG-13

Release Date: December 25, 2009

Plot: Jane (Streep) is finally getting over her divorce a decade ago from Jake (Baldwin) when suddenly they find another spark. Now she must try to balance her family, her ex, and a potential new boyfriend (Martin).

Who’S It For? Divorced women who are longing to be with a man.

Expectations: Great cast. Streep does nothing wrong lately. I even liked Mama Mia! Yes, I’m as shocked as you are. So I was ready for a fun relationship ride with It’s Complicated.

Scorecard (0-10)

Actors:

Meryl Streep as Jane: Ok … she can do wrong. It is still possible. There is something very agonizing about this performance. Jane runs an insanely successful bakery, has raised three great kids, and yet she’s not able to look forward. »

Sherlock Holmes Review

24 December 2009 8:37 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

The biggest hurdle facing Sherlock Holmes is convincing audiences to change their preconceptions of the character and accept a modernized-albeit set in the late 19th century-version of the characters.  Ironically, viewers already have if they watch the popular television show House, M.D. (House=Holmes, Wilson=Watson).  The banter between Holmes (Robert Downey Jr.) and Watson (Jude Law) is where the film shines but all its other elements including the vivid cinematography, Hans Zimmer’s memorable score, and Guy Ritchie’s hyper-active style make Sherlock Holmes a fun, fast-paced adventure.

In a surprising move from Hollywood, a town that will suck from any source material possible to prevent the risk of financing an original idea, Sherlock Holmes is not based on any of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s novels but rather takes the characters and puts them into a new story.  The mystery this time revolves around defeating occultist Lord »

Sherlock Holmes Review

Short version: If you want to finish 2009 with a fun, entertaining movie – go see Sherlock Holmes.

Screen Rant reviews Sherlock Holmes

I had high hopes going in to Sherlock Holmes, and I’m happy to report that director Guy Ritchie, composer Hans Zimmer, Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law came together to exceed my expectations. Now do keep in mind that I am not comparing this to the classic character as portrayed in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s stories – not being a fan of the genre, I read a Sherlock Holmes story once, a Long time ago and have no memory of it.

Downey Jr, of course, plays Sherlock Holmes with Jude Law along as Dr. Watson. Rachel McAdams appears on the scene later on in the film as an ex-love interest of Holmes. As the film opens, it is apparant that Holmes and Watson work in concert with the local police, »

Review: Big Mystery—Why Isn't Sherlock Holmes a Better Movie?

24 December 2009 6:15 AM, PST | E! Online | See recent E! Online news »

Review in a Hurry: Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law are effortlessly charming as a more action-oriented Holmes and Watson than we're used to. They belong in a better movie than the one Guy Ritchie has actually made. The Bigger Picture: For the first half hour or so of this new big-screen adventure featuring the literary world's most famous detective, all seems to be going right. Hans Zimmer's score is so perfect you'll think it has always been Holmes' theme, Downey's take on Sherlock as annoyingly obsessive-compulsive is a perfectly valid interpretation and a Satanic cult scenario, featuring a seemingly supernatural scoundrel by the name of Lord Blackwood (Mark Strong) is awesomely gothic. Composer Hans Zimmer and director Guy Ritchie agreed immediately on what music they liked, which promised a good collaboration on “Sherlock Holmes,” Zimmer told TheWrap's screening audience Tuesday night at the Aero Theater.

He described the resulting score as “the Pogues go to Romania,” adding, “It's sort of Kurt Weill, 'Mack the Knife,' 'Threepenny Opera,' and that gets you back to Victorian London.”   Working on Warner Bros.' “Sherlock&r »

Heath Ledger's Joker Face: How Fine Art Became Pop Culture

I've always wondered how high culture eventually wends its way into popular culture. A revealing insight into how that happens came on Tuesday night, at TheWrap's screening of the new "Sherlock Holmes" movie (which got a rousing reception).

Hans Zimmer, the Oscar-winning composer of that Warner Bros. film, was our guest afterward to talk about the process of composing its score, which involved working with director Guy Ritchie and spending a lot of time speaking to Robert Do »

Movie Preview: Sherlock Holmes (Starring Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law)

23 December 2009 8:18 AM, PST | ScreenStar | See recent ScreenStar news »

Sherlock Holmes (2009) is back in action, along with his legendary companion, Watson. The year is 1891. There's a conspiracy underway to destroy Britain, and it's up to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's most famous characters to thwart it. This latest challenge may be the most sinister ever faced by the duo, and they respond in ways never before revealed. Robert Downey, Jr. takes on the role of Sherlock Holmes, and Jude Law tackles the part of Watson, his trusted ally. The action/adventure/mystery is set to open in theaters on December 25th. The film was directed by Guy Ritchie, who admits to being a long-standing fan of the sleuths. Ritchie was initially of the opinion that Downey was too old for the part of Sherlock Holmes, since he wanted the film to portray a younger version of the character who he says "was on a learning curve." Downey felt the »

Exclusive Audio Interview with Music Maestro Hans Zimmer on Sherlock Holmes & Much More!

15 December 2009 4:58 PM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

Today, HeyUGuys was able to interview a true legend when it comes to movies. Examples of films he has scored include True Romance, Thelma & Louise, Black Hawk Down, more recently the likes of GladiatorPirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl and his latest being that of Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes. On his first ever assignment for HeyUGuys, Adam Farina was given over 30 minutes to talk with the composing icon and you can listen to the full interview audio below.

Points that might be worth taking note are that of the ‘projects’ he and Nolan are currently looking at collaborating on. It has to be the Dark Knight follow-up doesn’t it?! Or is it just Inception which they are both currently working on?

Take it away Adam…..

Review: Matthew Vaughn's Kick-ass

15 December 2009 4:43 AM, PST | Twitch | See recent Twitch news »

Footage from Matthew Vaughn's independently produced adaptation of Mark Millar's Kick-Ass comic created a strong buzz at Comic-Con in 2009. Lionsgate picked up the film a few months ago, but little information has emerged beyond a lackluster trailer and some posters. The studio decided to test the waters by showing a rough cut, which was not color-corrected, at the 11th annual Butt-Numb-a-Thon in Austin, Texas. The screening was interrupted by sound problems, but that did not obscure the fact that Kick-Ass is an ultra-violent superhero homage that lives up to its name.

Dave Lizewski (Aaron Johnson) is a typical high school nerd who loves comic books and has no luck with girls. After getting robbed one too many times by thugs, Dave decides to carry through with an idea of becoming a superhero. After pulling together a costume from a crappy green wet suit and work boots, he starts »

Bfca Goes Wild For Nine, Basterds and Avatar

14 December 2009 4:12 PM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

I am shocked to report that my new membership did not singlehandedly or significantly increase their taste levels, he said sarcastically. A few of the following nominations are hard to justify qualitatively speaking but you can't always get what you want. Again Oscar punditry combined with 'I just unwrapped this gift' excitement seem to have replaced careful consideration of what the year had to offer. But then it does appear as if only about 15 movies truly existed this year. In fact six movies Inglourious Basterds, Nine, Avatar, Up in the Air, The Hurt Locker, Precious and The Lovely Bones account for 48% of all the nominations. Crazy.

Am I just grumpy because they think The Lovely Bones (6 nominations) is better looking and The Blind Side (2 nominations) better acted than the exquisite Bright Star (1 nomination only)? I find those two judgment calls totally unsupportable. The abundant nominations for the garish and messy »

8 Movie Clips from Sherlock Holmes Starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law

14 December 2009 12:57 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

With director Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes getting released on Christmas Day, Warner Bros. has just released eight clips from the movie.  While I always post whatever clips I’m given from the studios, I’m actually going to recommend not watching the clips.  The reason is, the less you see from the movie, the more you’re going to enjoy it.  When I went into the press screening last week, I had only seen the trailer, so I was able to watch the movie without knowing what was going to happen.  I strongly recommend doing the same thing as Sherlock Holmes is an awesome, fun adventure that I think everyone is going to love.

As I said when I posted the 37 images a few days ago:  Even though I love to nitpick movies, this is one of the rare films that I walked out completely satisfied.  Great script. Fantastic performances from everyone involved. »

Avatar might get my visual votes, but nothing else. My personal sadness is the exclusion of Away We Go.
