Sharif Has 'No Intention' Of Paying Up In Valet Row

10 July 2008 5:05 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Egyptian actor Omar Sharif reportedly has no plans to pay the $455,000 (GBP227,500) he owes to a car park attendant following a 2005 incident, despite admitting to assaulting the man.

The Doctor Zhivago star, 76, was leaving Mastro's Steakhouse in Beverly Hills, California when he tried to pay Guatemalan valet Juan Anderson for his car in euro.

When Anderson pointed out the euro isn't a valid currency in the U.S., Sharif hit him in the head and called him a "stupid Mexican".

Last year, Sharif pleaded no contest to misdemeanour battery and was ordered to take an anger management course and fined $100 (GBP50). He was also sentenced to two years' probation.

Then, in February this year, Santa Monica Superior Court Judge Joe W. Hilberman awarded Anderson damages, including costs and legal fees - but Sharif has yet to hand over the cash.

And he has no intention of ever doing so, according to the lawyer who represented him in the case.

Attorney Martin Singer tells the Los Angeles Times, "His position is that the judgement is never going to be collected."

According to the publication, Sharif has no assets in the U.S., making it more difficult for Anderson to collect his payment.

Egyptian Director Chahine In Coma

16 June 2008 5:11 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Famed Egyptian moviemaker Youssef Chahine has fallen into a coma after suffering a brain haemorrhage.

The 82-year-old director was admitted to hospital in Cairo, Egypt on Sunday and is currently in a "serious condition", according to a spokesman for the city's Ash-Shuruq hospital.

It is reported that Chahine's family have requested for him to be flown to Europe for further treatment.

Chahine won international acclaim for his work in pioneering Egypt's film industry and was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award at France's Cannes International Film Festival in 1997.

The star is also credited with launching the career of fellow Egyptian legend Omar Sharif who shot to fame with roles in 1962's Lawrence of Arabia and Doctor Zhivago in 1965.

Hoffman Humour Leaves Chat Show Host Feeling Awkward

6 June 2008 3:59 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Dustin Hoffman turned a joke into an awkward moment on late night TV in America on Thursday night when he repeated an ill-advised Chris Rock joke.

The Tootsie star was telling a gag about a travelling flea on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno when he made an aside about presidential wannabe John McCain's age.

But the line was met with groans and boos from members of the studio audience - because it related to slavery.

Hoffman said, "What did Chris Rock say? He said that McCain is so old he once owned Sidney Poitier."

Leno attempted to hide a smile and he awkwardly urged Hoffman to get back to his joke, quipping, "Let's see if we can win back the crowd."

But Hoffman wasn't finished - his travelling flea ended up spending a week in Nice, France in "Brigitte Bardot's muff" and the actor suggested the French star was having sex with movie legend Omar Sharif.

As the audience groaned at the punchline, comedian Leno said,"As you know I was going to leave (the show) next year; I'm leaving right now. Good night everybody. This is the last show."

Opening This Week

By Neil Pedley

It's a battle of filmmaking titans this week, the kind of event that comes around once in a lifetime . Steven Spielberg and Uwe Boll will duke it out at the multiplexes. (Forgive us, but that might've been our only opportunity to ever get to put those two names in the same sentence.)

"The Children of Huang Shi"

Set during the Japanese occupation of China during the 1930s, this sweeping historical epic comes from Roger Spottiswoode, the director behind both "Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot" and the narrative remake of "Shake Hands with the Devil." The first official co-production between Australia and China, the film tells the true story of Australian nurse (Radha Mitchell), who with the aid of a British journalist (Jonathan Rhys Meyers), escorts 60 orphaned children 700 miles through the Liu Pan Shan Mountains to evade Japanese secret police. "Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon" co-stars Michelle Yeoh
