Andrea Bocelli performed a rendition of the song “Time to Say Goodbye” with his son Matteo Bocelli to accompany the Academy’s annual obituary section. Perhaps mindful of previous years, in which eagle-eyed viewers have jumped on omissions, this year’s “In Memoriam” — which began with footage of the recently deceased Russian opposition leader and subject of last year’s winning documentary Navalny — seemed comprehensive but at the same time not enough.

Part of every awards show is the In Memoriam segment, which honors those who have died in the past year. And that also means that part of every awards show is taking note of who didn’t make the cut (as happens every time). The 2024 Oscars are no exception. Andrea Bocelli and his son Matteo performed “Time to Say Goodbye” for the 2024 Oscars In Memoriam segment. Among the names part of the segment—at the end, the broadcast directed viewers to a website for the “many other legends we lost”—were: Michael Gambon, Harry Belafonte, Alan Arkin, Julian Sands, Andre Braugher, Chita Rivera, Tom Wilkinson, Glynis Johns, Jane Birkin, Paul Reubens, Piper Laurie, Richard Roundtree, Ryan O’Neal, Matthew Perry, Richard Lewis, Lee Sun-Kyun, Carl Weathers, William Friedkin, Glenda Jackson, and Tina Turner. The In Memoriam segment, which you can watch above, did end with a long list of names on...

The 96th Academy Awards ceremony should be known as the Cannes Oscars, argues Cannes Film Festival director Thierry Frémaux.
He’s got a point.
Frémaux sipped a cocktail at the Charles Finch and Chanel Annual Pre-Oscar Dinner in the Polo Lounge at the Beverly Hills Hotel, and ticked off Justine Triet’s Anatomy of a Fall and Jonathan Glazer’s The Zone of Interest as films that played and won the top prizes at last May’s festival.
Michael Barker, Sony Picture Classics co-chair, helped Frémaux out by adding in Martin Scorsese’s The Killers of the Flower Moon, which also premiered on the Croisette.
“Here we are in March, and the top winners at last year’s Cannes are still in the conversation, and are here at the Oscars,” says Frémaux, giving himself a pat on the back.

The German legend of The Pied Piper of Hamelin is the basis of two recent horror productions. The first of these “twin films” to receive a wide release is Erlingur Thoroddsen’s take, which shares the same title as Anthony Waller’s adaptation. And although both reimaginings feature demonic updates of that famous ratcatcher, only Thoroddsen’s story appears to underscore the musical component.
The Piper finds Charlotte Hope’s (The Nun) character Mel trapped in a familiar situation: her aspirations come at a great cost, and the consequences will be harmful. Here the young composer wants a future in her orchestra ensemble as well as the means to take care of her deaf daughter (Aoibhe O’Flanagan). Stealing a concerto from the estate of her recently departed mentor (Louise Gold) seems like the only option, but once the protagonist goes through with the plan, Mel’s conductor (Julian Sands) then...

The tale of the Pied Piper has fascinated audiences for some 740 years, but will there ever be a good film about it? People keep trying and failing. This latest effort comes from Erlinger Thoroddsen and is most notable for its cast, featuring one of the last performances by the ill-fated Julian Sands and also starring Charlotte Hope, best known as Miranda from Game Of Thrones. It has big ambitions, building its story around the longstanding occult notion of using music to encode forbidden ideas, but misses the fact that whilst one of the joys of music is its sense of consequence, any successful symphony must present its audience with challenges and keep them guessing before reaching its conclusion.
There is no guesswork to be done here, in a film which takes the most obvious route right from its opening scenes, never missing a note. It opens with Katharine (Louise Gold...

I’m trying to decrease my usage of “good” and “bad” when discussing art. They are lazy shortcuts that distill creativity into the simplest qualitative assessments as if art is worth boiling down to a pure binary outlook. It’s why whenever any movie is widely labeled “good,” I can’t help but approach it with some increased skepticism. Conversely, “bad” movies always pique my interest, and I’m more likely to look deeper for their successful elements than what I find from the consensus.

Steven Spielberg and Stephen King. Two artists at the very top of their fields. King: one of the best-selling authors of all time. Spielberg: the filmmaker who invented the blockbuster. How have these guys never worked together? Well, it's not for lack of trying. In fact, these titans have come very close to teaming up on several occasions. When Spielberg was writing "Poltergeist," he wanted King's help with the script. "It didn't work out because it was before the internet and we had a communication breakdown," King told EW.
Then there was "The Talisman," the fantasy novel King co-wrote with the late Peter Straub. Before the book even hit the shelves, Spielberg scooped up the rights — but neither a film nor a TV adaptation has ever materialized. "Several times he came very close to making it, and there were a lot of discussions about that," King said. It was...

The late Julian Sands (Warlock) leaves behind a few final roles, one of which is upcoming horror movie The Piper. Our friends over at Rue Morgue have debuted the official trailer.
Rue Morgue reports, “Samuel Goldwyn Films and Tubi Films will bring The Piper to select theaters and VOD/digital platforms March 8.” You can watch the trailer down below.
Charlotte Hope (The Conjuring Universe’s The Nun) also stars.
In The Piper, “A young composer is given the opportunity of a lifetime when she is tasked with finishing her late mentor’s concerto. She soon discovers that playing the music summons deadly consequences, leading her to uncover the disturbing origins of the melody and the evil force it has awakened: the Pied Piper.”
Erlingur Thoroddsen wrote and directed The Piper.
Bernard Kira and Les Weldon are producing with Millennium Media’s Yariv Lerner, Jeffrey Greenstein, Jonathan Yunger and Tanner Mobley.

Back in June of 2021, it was announced that Julian Sands, best known around here for playing the Warlock in the 1989 horror film fittingly titled Warlock and then coming back for the sequel Warlock: The Armageddon, had signed on to star in a new genre project called The Piper, which puts a horrific twist on the legend of the Pied Piper. Sadly, it was only seven months later that we heard Sands had gone missing while hiking on California’s Mount Baldy. Six months later, his body was found. He did get to work on The Piper before he passed away, though, and the film is now ready to make its way out into the world. It’s set to receive a theatrical and digital/on demand release on March 8th, and with that date exactly one month away a trailer has arrived online. You can check it out in the embed above.

The late Julian Sands stars opposite Charlotte Hope in The Piper, and the trailer for the movie has landed. More here.
The actor Julian Sands left us in 2023, when he disappeared while mountaineering in California at the start of the year. Aged just 65, he left behind a wealth of acting work, including a handful of movies he’d shot but hadn’t been released.
Here’s one of them now. It’s called The Piper, and Sands co-stars with Charlotte Hope in the film. It looks a hearty mix of classical music and horror, and thus far, we have but a smattering of information about it. We shall thus duly share with you what we have.
The logline for the movie reads, quite simply:

"She didn't want it performed!" Samuel Goldwyn Films & Tubi Films have revealed an official trailer for a supernatural horror film titled The Piper, a chilling tale of the Pied Piper. This initially premiered at the 2023 Screamfest Horror Film Festival last year, and it already opened in some European countries last fall. Set for a US release on VOD this March. When a young composer must finish her late mentor's concerto, she discovers that playing its music summons deadly consequences. Eerily enough, this is one of the final roles for British actor Julian Sands, who died in early 2023. His co-stars states: "The Piper is dark, creepy and kind of fun and his chilling portrayal of the orchestra's conductor had me genuinely terrified." The film also stars Charlotte Hope, Aoibhe O'Flanagan, and Oliver Savell. With a score by composer Christopher Young. This looks pretty scary, an orchestra horror fairy tale thriller. The segment spanned nearly five full minutes as The War and Treaty and Charlie Puth delivered performances of “See You Again” and the Friends theme song, “I’ll Be There for You.” But not mentioned during that time were Jerry Springer,...

What are the chances that two films called The Piper, both horror films involving the legend of The Pied Piper, would come out in the same year? And that both would be hard to see? While I haven’t seen the one starring Liz Hurley yet, I did get a chance to see the one written and directed by Erlingur Thoroddsen and featuring the late Julian Sands in one of his last roles.
It opens with the voice of Gustafson (Sands) on the phone trying to talk Katherine out of destroying the last copy of her Concerto for Children. She tells him “It is evil, no one must ever know about it” before rushing outside to try and burn it in her fire pit. But something with glowing eyes intervenes, and she burns while the manuscript survives.

Like years before, 2023 was another year the film and television industry lost several actors and contributors. As the months rolled by, there was at least a recorded death in each month of an actor in British and/or American cinema. While some died in old age, a few died young and in their prime. With over 50 recorded deaths, the film industry took a heavy loss in 2023. While some are not popular names, their roles in film and television will always be remembered. In memoriam, these are the popular actors who died in 2023. Julian Sands (65) – January...

Nicolas Cage doesn’t really care if you know he’s related to Francis Ford Coppola.
The actor, best known for his lively performances in flicks such as Con Air and Face/Off, famously changed his name from Nicolas Coppola to Nicolas Cage at the start of his career. He told a boisterous audience this afternoon at the Red Sea Film Festival in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, that he made the switch for two reasons.
The first appeared to be what Cage described as some early career on-set bullying.
“I did a little movie called Fast Times at Ridgemont High,” Cage said. “When I was on set, some of the other actors couldn’t believe I had talent because I was Coppola’s nephew. They would quote lines from Apocalypse Now and change lines to ‘I love the smell of Nicholas in the mornings instead of napalm in the morning.’”

Glenn Danzig (Verotika) brought his Vampire Spaghetti-Western Death Rider in the House of Vampires to select theaters back in 2021, but it’s been quite a while since we’ve heard a peep about the project. When will you actually be able to watch the movie?

Two years after its arrival in theaters, Glenn Danzig‘s horror film Death Rider in the House of Vampires is finally receiving a physical release on DVD and Blu-Ray.
Danzig’s second original feature-length film and self-described “vampire Spaghetti Western” received a limited theatrical release back in August 2021. The veteran rocker wrote, directed, scored, and starred in the film (playing the character Bad Bathory) alongside the likes of Devon Sawa, Julian Sands, Danny Trejo, Eli Roth, and Kim Director.
The plot follows the Death Rider (Sawa), who travels to the desert Vampire Sanctuary, ruled by Count Holliday. The price of admission is “one untouched virgin.” As seen in the Nsfw trailer for the film, the combo of bloodthirst and gunslinging recalls Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino’s horror shoot-em-up From Dusk Till Dawn, which also features vampires and pistols.

Younger readers may not be aware of this, but there was a time before the streaming wars when a movie could still be profitable without having a successful run at the box office. In fact, the direct-to-video market used to be so huge that it was worth producing smaller projects specifically for video and DVD, especially when a wide theatrical release might result in them losing money. Unfortunately, the reduced budgets often resulted in cheap cash-grabs when it came to franchises, with most movie sequels decreasing in quality the further they strayed from their cinema screen origins.
However, there were exceptions to this trend, as the lowered expectations also meant that creative risks could sometimes be taken with existing properties – with filmmakers being allowed to innovate instead of simply rehashing what came before. One example of these creative outliers is the Warlock series, as the third movie is actually a...

Back in 2021, I started a recurring column here on Bloody Disgusting called The Silver Lining, where I’d try to find the good parts of movies that were generally considered “bad.” Not only did I have a lot of fun looking back on less-appreciated films while finding hidden nuggets of entertainment where there should only have been schlock, but these articles also taught me to take in the good with the bad when watching genre pictures that at least tried to do something different.
I was reminded of this lesson while revisiting Warlock: The Armageddon this past week, as I believe this strange little film contains both the best and the worst moments of the Warlock franchise in an unexpected blend of sheer creative madness and aggressively bland characters. This year has, unfortunately, been filled with a slew of heartbreaking celebrity deaths. In October, "Friends" fans were shocked by the sudden death of Matthew Perry at age 54. Actors Richard Roundtree, Suzanne Somers, and Piper Laurie also died, as did musician Rudolph Isley.
In September, "Harry Potter" star Michael Gambon, "NCIS" actor David McCallum, musicians Steve Harwell and Jimmy Buffett, and 702 singer Irish Grinstead all died. In August, actor Arleen Sorkin, "The Price is Right" host Bob Barker, "This Is Us" actor Ron Cephas Jones, and musician DJ Casper, the man behind the 1998 party hit "Cha Cha Slide," died as well. The month before, we lost actors Angus Cloud and Paul Reubens, famed singers Tony Bennett, Sinéad O'Connor, and Jane Birkin, and musician Coco Lee. Despite how prevalent they are in spooky media, you’d be surprised at how rare it used to be for traditionally recognizable witches to be the main antagonists in scary movies. Sure, we got the eerie crones of the pseudo-documentary Haxan and even a dancing coven in Suspiria, but for the longest time, witches were relegated to humorous stereotypes akin to the Sanderson Sisters rather than anything truly terrifying. It’s only recently that modern classics like The Witch and Gretel and Hansel have made potions and broomsticks scary again, revisiting the disturbing origins of these myths in ways that genre films of the 20th century simply couldn’t handle.
There are a few exceptions to this rule, however, and one of my favorites just so happens to be a bizarre trilogy that dared to ask what would happen if a potion-brewing maniac from the early days of America found himself transported to modern times.

Featuring: Zeph E. Daniel, Julian Sands, Brian Yuzna, Screaming Mad George, Richard Stanley | Directed by Larry Wade Carrell
It’s one of the most controversial, influential and groundbreaking horror satires of the 1980s. Brian Yuzna’s Society told a terrifying surreality of what the rich were doing to the poor in shocking, sexual detail. But did you know it was based on truth and took inspiration from the satanic ritual abuse carried out by the Beverly Hills elite Keith family? Or that son Woody Keith changed his name to Zeph E. Daniel and co-scripted Society to exorcise the demons from his violent youth? This is the full, appalling story of how Daniel’s autobiography became a classic chiller for the ages.
Have you read that official synopsis above? Does it sound bizarre? Well, this documentary is more bizarre than you can imagine!

Julian Sands appeared to be unprepared for the likely challenges he would face on the climb of a Los Angeles-area mountain in which he did not return from, according to two of the hikers who found his body in June.
The hikers, who spoke to the Los Angeles Times in order to help better educate the public about the dangers of such winter climbs, said he was found with boots that did not feature appropriate attachments and was not wearing a helmet or carrying a mountaineers’ ice ax.
“I was a little shocked to see the microspikes,” Bill Dwyer told the LA Times in an interview published Thurdsay. “They were just the wrong tools for the job at hand.”
Dwyer said Sands would have needed more than the small metal cleats for the kind of winter conditions and terrain Sands was hiking. Sands would have been much better suited using crampons,...

In Alice Broughton’s tense literary drama “The Lesson,” Richard E. Grant plays one of Britain’s most noted authors, J.M. Sinclair, who hasn’t put out a book in years. He decides to mentor aspiring novelist Liam (Daryl McCormack) after he’s hired as a tutor for his college-bound son Bertie (Stephen McMillan), but the power dynamic between them soon shifts.
Ahead of the film’s limited theatrical release on Friday, TheWrap chatted about with the Oscar-nominated “Can You Ever Forgive Me” actor about his narcissistic character — who would never watch anything as “squalid” as Grant’s breakout indie “Withnail & I” — and how it’s a little like Alfred Hitchcock’s “Rebecca.”

It has been just over one week since authorities confirmed that the body found in the Mount Baldy wilderness area of California was in fact Julian Sands, the actor who went missing back in January. As it turns out, the hiker was well aware of just what sort of situations he was about to encounter.
Speaking with Radio Times (via Variety) late last year, actor Julian Sands said, “Pals I used to climb with have stopped going to the mountains…partly because they find, with climate change, the rock faces have become much more unstable.” Despite being a devoted outdoorsman with years of experience, the interview does provide some rather foreboding perspectives. “If you don’t really have the desire, the focus for climbing a route, if you’re not absolutely committed, it becomes much more dangerous and it’s a much more deflating experience.”

British actor Julian Sands, who was confirmed dead after his disappearance during a mountain hike near Mt. Baldy in Southern California on January 13, had confirmed the dangers of hiking in his last interview.
As per ‘Variety’, he was quoted telling ‘Radio Time UK’ during his last interview, “I’ve found spooky things on mountains, when you know you’re in a place where many people have lost their lives, whether it be on the Eiger or in the Andes.”
He further added: “You may be confronted with human remains and that can be chilling. It’s not necessarily supernatural, it’s possibly all too natural – what I would call hypernatural.”
“You’re in the presence of big nature and big nature is revealing itself in all its power. It can take us over a threshold of hypersensitivity into a realm of natural forces.”

Julian Sands, the British actor who was confirmed dead last week after going missing during a mountain hike, once spoke about “dangerous” mountain climbing in an interview.
In his last U.K. interview with the Radio Time, conducted six months before he was discovered, Sands described climbing as “solace and a sort of existentialist self-negation, but equally a self-affirmation,” adding “if you can deal with dangerous mountains, you can certainly deal with life as an actor — the two are quite complementary.”
The interview is published in the latest issue of the Radio Times. Sands was reported missing near Mt. Baldy in Southern California on Jan. 13. He was 65. The actor, who pivoted from the romantic lead in “A Room With a View” to playing sinister characters in films like “Warlock,” had gone hiking in the snow-covered Baldy Bowl area, about 45 miles east of Los Angeles. Actor who died after going on solo hike said in last UK interview he had seen ‘spooky things’ on mountains
Julian Sands spoke of feeling “chilled” by the discovery of human remains when pursuing his love of climbing, in his last UK interview before he died on a solo hike in California.
The 65-year-old actor was a committed climber and said he increasingly ventured out alone. “Pals I used to climb with have stopped going to the mountains,” partly because rock faces had become more unstable with climate change, and partly because of age, he told the Radio Times.

Alan Arkin, the Oscar and Tony-winning actor who starred in films ranging from “Catch-22” to “Little Miss Sunshine,” has died at the age of 89. His death was confirmed by his sons Adam, Matthew and Anthony in a statement obtained by TheWrap. A cause of death has, as of this time, not been given.
“Our father was a uniquely talented force of nature, both as an artist and a man. A loving husband, father, grand and great grandfather, he was adored and will be deeply missed,” the statement reads.
Borning in Brooklyn, New York on March 26, 1934, Arkin was the son of a painter and a teacher. He was raised Jewish, albeit with “no emphasis on religion,” and his family moved to Los Angeles when he was 11. Melanie Lynskey shared a touching farewell post of actor Julian Sands, whose remains were found in the San Gabriel mountains earlier this week following a months-long search. The “Yellowjackets” star had been friends with Sands since 2000, when they worked together on the set of “Red Rose.”
Lynskey said she’d been a fan of Sands’ film “A Room with a View,” and recalled being nervous to work alongside the actor, but took note of his positive qualities.
“I could barely speak to you,” she wrote in her Instagram post Wednesday. “When I did finally tell you what the movie/you meant to me, I was struck by your humility, your lack of ego, the absence of any grandstanding. “
Lynskey recalled growing close with Sands over the following years, and being taken aback by his generosity.

“You bought me so many presents, mostly huge and intimidating non-fiction books and classical music CDs. You found out I’d never been to the opera, and so you came to...
Lynskey shared a photo of the pair and wrote about first meeting Sands while working on the 2002 movie Rose Red. She admitted being a bit starstruck as a big fan of Sands in the Oscar-nominated film, A Room with a View.

Melanie Lynskey took to social media Wednesday to share a heartfelt tribute to the late Julian Sands.
Authorities confirmed the actor, who had been missing since January, died while hiking after his remains were recently found by hikers near the Mount Baldy wilderness area.
“The identification process for the body located on Mt. Baldy on June 24, 2023, has been completed and was positively identified as 65-year-old Julian Sands of North Hollywood,” the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department said in a statement Tuesday. “The manner of death is still under investigation, pending further test results.”
The Yellowjackets star shared a throwback photo of her and Sands dancing on Instagram and opened up about being nervous to meet him for the first time on the set of the miniseries Rose Red in 2000.
“A Room With A View was a movie I had seen dozens of times, and I adored you in it,” she wrote.

The news that the remains of Julian Sands, an actor of extraordinary sensitivity and awareness, were identified in California’s San Gabriel mountains June 27 brings to a close a sad, uncertain chapter. Sands will have no date of death confirmed. He simply disappeared January 13 while hiking near Mt. Baldy amid severe storms, icy conditions, and possible avalanches. It took five days just to find his car. And yet, the location where he disappeared, a harsh wilderness, was only about 10 miles from Inland Empire urban sprawl. That’s California for you: the most densely populated areas abut what is truly “the wild.”
The nature of his disappearance was such that many of Sands’ admirers, myself included, did not grieve his loss at the time. There was always hope, however much of a long shot, that he might be found. He was an expert and avid hiker, after all. Maybe he found...

The director worked with his friend Julian Sands on eight films – and one fitness regime. Here he remembers an actor unlike any other: impish, charismatic and unafraid to shock
I adored Julian. I’ve never met anyone like him. Our first encounter was in 1987, when I was casting my first film, Stormy Monday. We had a coffee in the Hyatt hotel on Sunset Boulevard and he basically thrust himself forward and said: “I’ve got to play this part! This is me.”
He was so pushy but I found his boldness very endearing. He was wrong for the role; I ended up casting Sean Bean. But I was very tickled by his enthusiasm and we became friends.

Sands’ performance in the Em Forster adaptation gave a focus to dreamily tragic teenagers who aspired to a more meaningful existence
The late Julian Sands had a long and active career. But I’m not alone, at the very mention of his name, in being brought back, with melancholy and reverie, to one particular work: the Merchant Ivory adaptation of Em Forster’s A Room With a View. The film is what brought Sands, and his co-star Helena Bonham Carter, their first fame; the latter was just 18 when she made it. It is adored by many because it is a perfectly made, beautifully acted and pitch-perfect thing altogether, all irradiated by enough of Forster’s irony to spare it the fate of over-earnestness. But more than that, it is adored because – especially if you first saw it, like me, as a teenager – it is the sweetest and most ardent evocation...
