Pat Seals of Flyleaf Shares His Top Ten Horror Films

9 November 2009 10:24 PM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

As we've mentioned previously, November 10th is the release date of the band Flyleaf's new CD, entitled Memento Mori, and to help celebrate the occasion, their bass player, Pat Seals, has taken time out of his hectic schedule to prepare for Dread Central readers a list of his Top Ten favorite horror films.

Nothing relieves the stress of the holidays -- or anything really -- like a good horror flick, and Pat certainly has prepared an eclectic catalog that shows he knows his shit about our genre.

Without further ado, here's Pat's list (click each image to see the full poster):

1. The Addiction (1995) - Dir. Abel Ferrara, Starring Lili Taylor

This is my favorite vampire movie. It is the best. The best. Morality and the darkness of human nature are the focus, and Lili Taylor's performance is brutal. Plus, Christopher Walken waltzes in for a philosophical cameo. The »

CinemaSpy's Week-End TV Recap (Nov. 7)

7 November 2009 9:05 PM, PST | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

Many television viewers — and pop culture critics — are wondering just what's up with Fox's Fringe. Watchers of the show were caught unaware this past week, not realizing that the network was airing a new episode of the skein until they read about it the next day in various news outlets. Fringe simply wasn't in the listings. People's DVRs didn't pick up the show, because Fox was listed as running Game 7 of the World Series. People believed that the show would be absent one more week.

All of this is raising serious questions about how seriously Fox is treating the show, or indeed, if they're trying to kill it. The Thursday night time slot was their first error in judgment, but lapses in playing to the viewer base by neglecting to promote episodes and air times is something else entirely.

The impression left is that Fox used first-run programming as a backup to a sporting event. »

Watch This: Spider-Woman and Superman In Bollywood Love

31 October 2009 9:02 AM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

In Bollywood, no filmmaker needs to worry about what studio owns the rights to what Marvel or DC character. Not even the boundaries between DC and Marvel have meaning, as evidenced by this delightful clip from India's Dariya Dil. Here, Superman shows off his dance moves on land and in the sky while courting Spider-Woman. Yep, Spider-Woman! Somewhere, Lois Lane is throwing a snit fit. It's hard enough to be secure knowing Wonder Woman is out there, but how can she compete with Jessica Drew's pheromones?

All joking aside, I think it's rather cool that at least one filmmaker in India decided Superman needed nothing less than a super woman as a costar (we still haven't done that here!), and that superheroines could use a nice afternoon in the sky. Can you imagine how hard it is for a superheroine to date a normal guy? He'd be threatened by her powers and fame, »

The Crow: 15 Years Of Devil's Night

26 October 2009 3:44 PM, PDT | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

Not only is it Halloween Week here on Splash Page, this year also marks the 15th anniversary of Brandon Lee's debut in the live-action adaptation of James O'Barr's dark comic book series "The Crow." With that in mind, we're celebrating with a five-part retrospective on the 1994 film, its origins and its legacy, culled from interviews with the cast and filmmakers behind director Alex Proyas' celebrated film. Check back each day this week for another installment of our "15 Years Of Devil's Night" series.

Part One: 52 Meetings From The Comic To The Screen

By Ryan J. Downey

Sure, there's Richard Donner's Superman, the Christopher Nolan Batman films, but to many, "The Crow" remains the greatest comic book flick ever made.

The late, great Brandon Lee, who was killed in a tragic onset accident just days away from completing the film, completely embodied the pathos, grace, otherworldly invincibility and »

How Does Jim Carrey Playing Multiple Roles in 'A Christmas Carol' Benefit the Film?

26 October 2009 1:22 PM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

The idea of one actor playing multiple characters in a film isn't a new one even though many people begin and end the conversation with Eddie Murphy for his performances in films such as Nutty Professor and Norbit all while forgetting the comedy he brought us in Coming to America.

Before Murphy we had the likes of Mel Brooks in History of the World and Spaceballs, Alec Guiness in the fantastic Kind Hearts and Coronets and Peter Sellers in Dr. Strangelove. Outside of Murphy it seems only Mike Myers has endured the same kind of ill treatment, primarily for taking the joke to the point it wasn't funny any longer (debatable) in the Austin Powers films and then dropping the bomb that was The Love Guru.

Looking at the performances listed above I am reminded of some classic films as well as a couple that missed the mark, but we »

Review: 'Saturday Morning Cartoons 1970s Vol. 2'

26 October 2009 10:45 AM, PDT | Comicmix.com | See recent Comicmix news »

The 1970s remained a good time to be a kid, as the three networks continued to program Saturday mornings with hours and hours of programming aimed right at them. On the other hand, it was clear that finding new series to click with the evolving kiddie set was harder and harder so series seemed to come and go at a faster clip with shows from earlier years revived to fill gaps or revamped to bring the familiar to new audiences.

While super-heroes were largely done, magic, fantasy, and real adventure found their niches with series starting to be aimed at the younger set earlier and slightly more mature offerings as the hour grew later. All told, the dozen shows represented in Saturday Morning Cartoons: 1960s , out tomorrow from Warner Home Video, are snapshot into the decade.

For that younger set, there is Help! It’s the Hair Bear Bunch, which »

Lists of Doom Xxviii: Ari of Destrophy

19 October 2009 7:18 AM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Greetings Fango Fiends! It's time once again for another installment of Fangoria Musick's Lists Of Doom - the column where we track down some of your favorite (or soon-to-be favorite) bands to get their thoughts on on the world of horror, and which films scare them.

For our 28th installment we caught up with Ari - vocalist/guitarist of Des Moines' Destrophy. One of the Midwest's hardest-working bands, Destrophy's self-titled album (and first for Victory Records) will hit retail on October 26th. So what scares Ari? Great White Sharks? Satanic Children? Nuclear Man?

Find out below!

1. An American Werewolf In London (1981), Director: John Landis.

Definitely my favorite werewolf incarnation- more like bear-wolf!  Actually the Nazi ghouls might have scared me more than anything.

2. The Exorcist III (1990), Director: William Peter Blatty.

The scene in the hospital.  A full minute of silence.  Best scare ever.

3. Alien (1979), Director: Ridley Scott.

Director David Bowers Discusses Astro Boy

19 October 2009 5:04 AM, PDT | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

Initially unveiled at the San Diego Comic-Con to thunderous applause, Imagi's latest animated adventure, Astro Boy, debuts in theaters this week and director David Bowers is hoping that American audiences will connect with his take on the iconic Japanese character created by Osamu Tezuka.

It's such a rich story, and I think its themes are universal. I think American audiences are very used to superheroes, so it's not an enormous stretch for them. The only difficulty was having it be such a beloved character and having to decide what to retain and what to get rid of.

I like origin stories. I think Richard Donner's Superman is still just about the best superhero movie ever made. And I think it's interesting to see where these characters come from and what their roots are. I think it would be hard to jump into an Astro Boy movie with him already fighting robots and battling aliens. »

The Family That Slays Together: Ten Domestic Slashers

15 October 2009 9:27 AM, PDT | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

If you feel like you've seen this week's new slasher flick "The Stepfather" before, you probably have, even if you're not a fan of the 1987 original starring "Lost"'s Terry O'Quinn. That's because the family-bands-together-to-fend-off-the-one-member-who-turns-on-the-rest trope is at the heart of dozens of horror movies.

Need proof? Here's a list of ten different types of immediate and extended family members and a notable cinematic example of each going medieval on their loved ones.

Killer Mom

I'd wager that everybody has said "My parents are crazy!" at least once in their lives. But the filicidal mother in 2008's "Baby Blues" is so far gone into Crazytown that she'll make you want to call your own mom to apologize for ever implying she was nuts. Colleen Porch plays the killer in question, an exhausted mother of four with a truck-driving husband, who snaps one day and begins picking off her own children slasher movie-style; at one point, »

'Smallville' Straps on Waterskis; Jumps Zombies

12 October 2009 9:15 PM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

Back at the end of May, I intimated that Smallville was in danger of crossing that imaginary line in the sand, the one often referred to as "the point of no return." I argued that the series had become annoyingly illogical, straying from the essence of the core mythology as it mined the more obscure elements of the Superman narrative purely in the service of longevity.

Some agreed with me; a greater number did not, often citing the DC literature trope as an explanation for confused storytelling, convoluted plot points and a seemingly forgotten raison d'être.

From what I've seen of this ninth season, things haven't gotten much better. And now, it's jumped the zombie (more on that in a moment).

Supporting players and entropy

What's going on? The simple answer is that the show has been on the air too long. Most series can't sustain creative innovation and remain »

Ninja Assassin director admits having talks on new Superman film

2 October 2009 10:27 AM, PDT | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

Director James McTeigue - whose Ninja Assassin comes out in November - has been persistently linked to making the next Superman movie for Warner Bros.

Previously, he refused to comment on rumours that he would helm a Superman reboot with his long-time collaborators the Wachowski brothers as producers.

Then he spoke about what he would want to do with the character if he did become involved.

In a further interview, this time with FirstShowing, he admits he has been in talks and elaborates on his vision for bringing the man of steel back to the big screen in a more successful way.

He said: "I've had some discussions - the Wachowskis to a lesser degree - but the Superman franchise is in a strange kind of place at the moment. I think they're still trying to work out the mechanics of how that can come together."

James McTeigue Talks Superman & Magneto

1 October 2009 8:24 PM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

At the end of July, Robert Sanchez at IESB broke the news that Warner Brothers were looking at James McTeigue to possibly direct a new Superman feature film that would act as a franchise reboot.

A few weeks later, McTeigue sat with MTV and while not confirming or denying any involvement, he did relay his idea of a reboot for Superman should he land the gig. His plan would take the Man of Steel in a different direction and skip through the overdone origins of Clark growing up into the hero we know him as.

Things were looking good for our favorite Kryptonian, up until Diane Nelson, the head of the newly formed DC Entertainment, explained that they do not have another Superman film as part of their current plans.

James McTeigue Confirms Superman Involvement

1 October 2009 9:00 AM, PDT | WorstPreviews.com | See recent Worst Previews news »

FirstShowing caught up with director James McTeigue (V for Vendetta, Ninja Assassin) to ask him a few questions about the new Superman movie, which he has been rumored to helm and the Wachowskis (The Matrix) to produce. He first revealed that his involvement is not a rumor. "Maybe [there's] some truth to [it]," he said. "I've had some discussions, the Wachowskis to a lesser degree, but the Superman franchise is in a strange kind of place at the moment. I think they're still trying to work out the mechanics of how that can come together." Warner Bros recently lost rights to Superman's origins and two weeks ago, DC Entertainment head revealed that there are currently no plans to develop another installment. But that hasn't stopped McTeigue from talking about his plans for the reboot. "I think I would be interested in doing it if they let me do it the way I wanted to do it, »

McTeigue's Take on Superman

1 October 2009 1:15 AM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

Personally, I never get tired of writing about speculation regarding a new Superman movie. Maybe because he’s a recognizable character with a long cinematic history; as such, a new feature seems inevitable, regardless of whichever studio resurrects it.

There were rumblings that James McTeigue, who directed V for Vendetta and the upcoming Ninja Assassin, would be helming a Superman reboot, with the Wachowski Brothers involved in some capacity. Then the news hit that Warner Bros. was putting the franchise on hold. McTeigue is currently scouting locations for The Raven, which follows Edgar Allen Poe as he attempts to solve a serial killer mystery during the last five days of his life. Firstshowing met up with the director at Fantastic Fest in Austin, and although nothing appears to be going on with Superman right now, McTeigue was willing to reveal what he might do if the opportunity ever arose.

Classic Cameos: Danny Glover in 'Maverick'

23 September 2009 4:15 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

People always seem to sneer at Mel Gibson's Maverick, but I've always had a special place for it on my DVD shelf. As television remakes go, Maverick is pretty slick and clever, and gently spoofs the Western genre while remaining true to its 1960s roots. (If you own the special 2-disc copy of Unforgiven, you need to go watch the Maverick episode that's included as a bonus feature. It's hilarious! Also, James Garner was a dreamboat.)

Nevertheless, Maverick threatened to be too silly for its own good when it decided to capitalize on Richard Donner's friendships and franchises, and invite Danny Glover in for a cameo. (There's also a Goonie making a cameo in his gang, see if you can spot him.) This is the kind of wink-wink-nudge-nudge joke that should completely annoy me, but it doesn't here. Maybe my love of Lethal Weapon runs too deep, or »

Superman's Cinematic Future Indefinitely Suspended

15 September 2009 9:05 PM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

What a year it's been for the Man of Steel. After a decade-long, protracted court battle between Warner Bros. and the heirs of Superman co-creator Jerome Siegel, the legal system finally ruled that the studio would have to commence production on a new Superman film by 2011, or face losing all rights to Superman in 2013.

Moreover, nothing related to the character's origins can be used by the studio, though his ability to fly, the effects of kryptonite and the character of Lex Luthor remain within Warner Bros. creative purview.

As you may recall, James McTeigue (V for Vendetta) was recently rumored to direct a new Superman film. And while McTeigue wouldn't confirm the rumor, he wasn't shy about commenting openly regarding how he would reboot the franchise on the big screen, sans any origin story.

Now, with Warner Bros. having creating DC Entertainment to smooth the transition of taking DC comic properties to the big screen, »

X-Men Producer Updates X-Men: First Class, Deadpool and More

13 September 2009 4:48 AM, PDT | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

X-Men Origins: Wolverine, producer Lauren Shuler Donner gave out a few details regarding other X-Men-related movies. Donner has quite a few or them on her plate, including Wolverine 2, Deadpool, X-Men: First Class, and possibly, Donner told IGN, another X-Men:

I think there are some wonderful storylines I'd like to pursue in X-Men 4 and 5, but who knows? Obviously Fox is my partner, so we're in discussions about what will be next As forDeadpool, Shuler sees that spin-off as a reboot, disregarding what happened to the character in Wolverine and instead making "it the Deadpool that's in the comics." Ryan Reynolds is set to play Deadpool again, even after Reynolds was cast in Green Lantern, but Shuler sees no problem with Reynolds playing both roles:

Not on my end, personally, not on my end, no. I think you can do different characters. We've had different Bonds right, and I think »

Megan Fox As A Circus Freak With Mickey Rourke In 'Passion Play'

8 September 2009 10:00 AM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Hard to picture, right? The lovely Megan Fox, star of "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" and the upcoming "Jennifer's Body," caged up as a circus freak? Makeup can do a lot, sure, but is anyone going to want to buy Fox as anything less than a beautiful angel?

Probably not. It's a good thing then that she'll pretty much be one in writer/director Mitch Glazer's "Passion Play," In last week's "Behind the Screen" interview, Fox revealed to MTV's Josh Horowitz that she'll star opposite Mickey Rourke as a caged circus freak with angel-like wings growing out of her back, a role for which she had previously been rumored. Rourke will play her savior, in what the actress says "is clearly not going to be a typical [love story]."

I hadn't heard a peep about this project before today, but I'm keyed in now thanks largely to Glazer's involvement. "Passion Play" will be his directorial debut, »
