DVD Targets TV Torture Plots

14 July 2008 10:37 AM, PDT | From Studio Briefing | See recent Studio Briefing news

Ken Robinson, a former Army Special Forces intelligence officer, who created the shortlived series E-Ring in 2005 for Jerry Bruckheimer Productions and NBC, has been using his experience to try to convince network television executives and program producers that the usual portrayal of torture as an effective method to obtain information from prisoners is ineffective and often counter-productive, the Chicago Tribune reported today (Monday). In one episode, a U.S. soldier being tortured by his captors offers bad misinformation to stop the torture. (The series was canceled in the U.S. before the episode aired, the newspaper observed.) Robinson and other former intelligence officers are now being featured in a DVD, Primetime Torture, being distributed to 1,200 educators and military trainers, in which they argue the case against torture and say that Hollywood's favorable depiction of torture in shows like 24 sends the wrong message to military members who view them.

'Fringe' Fingered For Success

8 July 2008 4:02 AM, PDT | From syfyportal.com | See recent syfyportal news

It looks like "Fringe" is earning quite a name for itself ... even without airing a single episode. The Hollywood Reporter has recently named the J.J. Abrams series the top choice of its predicted list of success for the new television season. And it's not alone. The science-based series is joined by "The Eleventh Hour," a prodecural drama from Jerry Bruckheimer. But don't expect either show to hold a ratings win for its timeslot, as according to the Horizon Media report, no new television show will be able to control the 18 to 49 age demographic that advertisers typically covet. Instead, existing favorites such as "Heroes" and "The Ghost Whisperer" will maintain their supremacy. ABC's adaptation of the popular BBC series "Life On Mars" is also expected to do well and has been ...

Bruckheimer Takes On The Lone Ranger

30 March 2008 7:13 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Pirates Of The Caribbean producer Jerry Bruckheimer is set to give 1956 classic The Lone Ranger a Disney twist in a modern remake.

Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio, the screenwriting pair behind the Pirates trilogy, are in final talks to reteam with Bruckheimer and Disney to bring the masked hero to the big screen, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

The Lone Ranger started off as a radio show in the 1930s and spurned numerous TV spin-offs and movies, including the 1956 film starring Clayton Moore.

The story follows the adventures of the Ranger, his white stallion Silver and his American Indian sidekick Tonto, as they attempt to bring local criminals to justice.

The crusader's last silver screen outing was in 1981's The Legend Of The Lone Ranger - but the film bombed so badly at the box office, the movie's star Klinton Spilsbury never worked in Hollywood again.

Persian Prince Bids For Movie Role

25 March 2008 8:55 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

A real-life Persian prince is bidding to beat Orlando Bloom and Zac Efron to the lead role in forthcoming Disney adventure movie Prince Of Persia: Sands Of Time.

Wannabe actor David K. Zandi has circulated an online poll, which he claims has attracted millions of votes, backing his attempt to land the lead part in the big-screen adaptation of the popular computer game.

He tells the New York Post, "Most people are fascinated that a real Persian with royal lineage could be hired to play this role."

But Disney and director Jerry Bruckheimer insist Zandi - who claims to be one of the last male members of the Zand dynasty which ruled the Persian Empire from 1747 to 1779 - has no chance.

A representative for the studio tells the Post, "There is absolutely no truth. The speculation is self-created."
