1891 Miriam Cooper silent film star of the Dw Griffith wing of Hollywood (Intolerance, Birth of a Nation)
1903 Dean Jagger Oscar winner for the war drama Twelve O'Clock High. Can't say I've seen that one. Anyone?
1923 Gene Callahan started working in feature films in 1960. He'd won two Oscars for Art Direction (The Hustler and America, America) by April, 1964. Quick study, yes? I imagine he had great stories to tell: his first movie scenery was chewed by none other Liz (BUtterfield 8) and Brando (The Fugitive Kind) and he worked right up until his death, closing a fine career out with those Steel Magnolias and Reese Witherspoon's debut Man in the Moon. If you haven't seen the latter, I recommend. Sweet movie and Reese had full star charisma even at 14.

Reese Witherspoon was in Philadelphia recently to film How Do You Know?, and she brought her softball skills back to La to keep working on the film. She was decked out in a USA team jersey yesterday, as she went to bat and rounded the bases. It was her second afternoon of fitness in a row, after Tuesday's jog with a friend. Reese always looks like she's in great shape, and she's surely able to keep up with her buff action-hero boyfriend Jake. View 10 Photos › For more photos of Reese on set just read more. For those of you who only watch good movies, Reese Witherspoon has been Mia from theaters since 2007. For everyone else, you haven.t seen her since 2008.s Four Christmases and what.s more you.re not likely to see her any time soon. Her next movie is a mysterious, untitled James L. Brooks project which is currently filming and isn.t expected in theaters before December of 2010. I don.t really follow Blend Celebrity as well as I should, so I have no explanation for her extended absence. I.m going go ahead and make the wild assumption that she been in a race against the Octomom to see who can pop out the most kids in the shortest period of time. At least that.s how I.m going to explain the baggy, mommy baseball uniform she.s been forced to wear on the James L. Brooks set. The »

Reese Witherspoon soaked up the sun while out for a run yesterday in La. She's back in California after time in Philadelphia working on How Do You Know? and NYC launching her new fragrance. Even though Reese was all smiles during her jog with a friend, things got ugly when the actress had to intervene in an argument between two photographers. Later in the afternoon, she was back to her sunny self when she did some shopping in a pretty blue dress. Jake Gyllenhaal didn't accompany her on any of her activities, but if she wants a peek at her man's sexy abs all she has to do is check out the new preview for Prince of Persia. Getting a picture of Reese Witherspoon is apparently a scary thing these days! Yesterday, two paparazzi got into an altercation in Brentwood, CA when they were trying to get a picture of Reese working out. The both wanted "the shot" and fists started flying! According to TMZ, Reese then contacted the Lapd and identified herself as an eyewitness, saying the fight was brutal and saying that she'd be "happy to cooperate" with any investigation or prosecution. Since Reese isn't the biggest fan of the paps to begin with, it totally makes sense! »

Reese Witherspoon is more than happy to become the key witness in a case involving a vicious fight between two members of the paparazzi. The whole thing started in Brentwood earlier today, when two pappers -- not ours -- were trying to get a shot of Reese after she finished exercising. Each wanted to get "the shot" and they began fighting. We're told it was intense. The Lapd was called to the scene. Cops took a report and are investigating. »

Reese Witherspoon picked up an Oscar in 2005 for her performance as June Carter in the Johnny Cash biopic "Walk the Line," but she's been fairly quiet since then. Working of course, but there's one listing on IMDb for her that's had me curious for ages. After all, it's not every day that you pair a performer of her caliber with James L. Brooks, executive producer of "The Simpsons," for an as-yet-untitled comedy also starring Jack Nicholson, Paul Rudd and Owen Wilson. So when MTV reporter Akshay Bhansali ran into Witherspoon last week at the Avon Foundation for Women Awards Gala red carpet, he just had to ask her for an update, perhaps even a title, on the mysterious project.
"We don't have a title, we just wrapped on Saturday," Witherspoon said. "We've been shooting it for the past six months." And what exactly is "it"? Previous reports indicated that the »

It's the first November of 2009, which means it's time to pull that lever, touch that screen or figure out whatever newfangled contraption your district has provided: today is Election Day, so cast that vote!
I put that exclamation point in there not because I'm excited to vote in New York's mayoral election, but because Election Day gets me thinking about what a rich topic elections have been for cinema. Combining intrigue, corruption, passion and the odd sex scandal, politics in general and elections in particular have made for some big screen gems over the years. Here are my favs.
Thomas Jefferson Johnson (Eddie Murphy) in "The Distinguished Gentleman": This flick is potent satire lurking within broad comedy: Johnson's conman epiphany is to ditch his illegal shenanigans and start sucking the enriching teet of the Washington establishment. He looses his ode-to-a-forefather's moniker, appropriates the name and campaign signage of a recently deceased politician and – bingo! »

Reese Witherspoon is already known as an actress who dislikes the paparazzi. She’s gone as far as trying to help get a law passed to keep photographers from following her and other celebs around 24/7. And today was just another example of how pesky the paps can be if you’re an A-list actress. Reese was leaving a building in Brentwood after working out when two photographers began fighting with each other over getting “the shot.” According to TMZ, things got intense, and the police were even called to the scene. The Lapd ended up writing a... »

- George Clooney might be joining the ranks of Paul Giamatti, Jack Nicholson and Reese Witherspoon as he is currently looking to topline The Descendants for Alexander Payne. If production does indeed begin in February, we could see Clooney in a Payne-branded comedy by year's end. The project was set into motion by Fox Searchlight in 2007. Scripted by Blacklist regulars Nat Faxon and Jim Rash, this is based on the Kaui Hart Hemmings novel, set in Hawaii, the unconventional family drama tells the story of a newly widowed father -- the descendant of landowners and one of the richest men on Oahu -- who takes off with his two rebellious daughters to track down his wife's lover on the island of Kauai. There'll be plenty of casting to do before the holidays begin. We need a pair of daughters aged 17 and 10 and who can deliver some lip service much like »

Oscar winner Reese Witherspoon boarded a whole series of upcoming projects recently, and the latest she's considering to star in and produce is the Terrel Seltzer-scrioted "Rule #1" for Fox Searchlight.
The Hollywood Reporter says the film follows a New York woman who develops a friendship with a Puerto Rican girl with attention deficit disorder. Seltzer's credits include 1996's comedy "One Fine Day."
Witherspoon was recenlty heard in the mediocre animated flick "Monsters vs. Aliens," and before that she was seen in the disappointing "Four Christmases." She recently wrapped a comedy by James L. Brooks.
Witherspoon totally deserved her Oscar for "Walk the Line," but I feel her projects following that film failed to stick with me. She'll also soon star in a film by Cameron Crowe and in 'Pharm Girl." »

Here's your blast of casting bites for the end of the week. First up, Don Cheadle and Brendan Gleeson will team as unlikely cop partners in The Guard. Film follows the confrontational small-town Sgt. Gerry Boyle (Gleeson), who likes hookers and isn't interested in drug runners, and FBI Agent Everett (Cheadle) in a tale of international coke smuggling. Sounds on the surface like an Irish reversal of Beverly Hills Cop, where the small-town local guy is the irreverent jokester while the outsider is terribly straightlaced. John Michael McDonagh writes and directs. If it weren't for the cast, and the fact that it takes place in Ireland (not even sure why that's a draw) I'd be brushing this one off already. [ComingSoon] After the break, Reese Witherspoon demonstrates the first rule and Djimon Hounsou kicks some ass. Reese Witherspoon will produce and star in Rule #1, a tidy little dramedy about "a New »

· Clearly Marvel Studios needed to ramp up the prestige level on Thor, which until Thursday had been slumming with the threadbare likes of Natalie Portman and director Kenneth Branagh. Enter Sir Anthony Hopkins, who joined the production as Odin, the father of the titular Norse god of thunder and his brother Loki. Still no word yet on if or when Dominic Cooper will join the proceedings, or if the emboldened Marvel will stick to its Oscar-pedigree prereqs for all of the supporting cast. [Variety]

I hope we've all learned by now to be wary of movies in which a white person learns a Very Important Lesson About Life from someone of another race. It was hokey in Driving Miss Daisy, it was unbearable in The Soloist, and I expect it to be pretty silly in that upcoming Sandra Bullock movie about the family that adopts the black football player. Because, come on. Standing back and marveling that "we're all the same on the inside" is the oldest kind of Hollywood pandering to racial equality, and is still de riguer in an industry that rarely gives leading roles to non-white actors and still can't find another decent part for Viola Davis to play. Anyway. I'm obviously not 100% certain that the new Reese Witherspoon project Rule #1, written by Terrel Seltzer, is that kind of movie, but it sure sounds like it-- "a New York woman befriends »

- Reese Witherspoon, the most commonly used named whenever a film needs to attach a lead actress to a project (Kidman used to own the title) is being linked for her acting abilities and producing capabilities to Terrel Seltzer's original screenplay. If Reese's publicist reads this, please drop me a line and let me know which title on this long grocery list is she no longer "attached" to. Seltzer (who hasn't seen a produced screenplay since One Fine Day) sold Rule #1 to Fox Searchlight - the company who is currently seeing red with the horribly conceived Amelia. Brad Epstein (Dan in Real LIfe) will produce the pic which centers on a New Yorker who befriends a Puerto Rican girl with attention deficit disorder.... »

Reese Witherspoon is attached to star in and produce the upcoming Fox Searchlight comedy Rule #1 about a New York woman who befriends a young Puerto Rican girl with Adhd. Though another Reese Witherspoon film normally doesn't do much to pique my interest, I did catch something in my news that made me cock my head like a dog hearing a whistle. Rule #1 was written by Terrel Seltzer whose first writing credit was the underappreciated 80s comedy How I Got Into College. The film was directed by... »
