Evil Dead

1 hour ago | Pastemagazine.com | See recent PasteMagazine news »

Sam Raimi’s seminal cabin-in-the-woods cautionary tale The Evil Dead and its sequels are, paradoxically, somewhat hallowed ground in the horror realm; they are to demons as George Romero’s Night of the Living Dead is to zombies. It’s a testament to the reverence for the series that in an entertainment genre filled to bursting with copycats and remakes, no one dared to touch the franchise proper for 30 years. Even now, this reimagining is spearheaded by Raimi himself, co-producing with part of the original team as well as the films’ breakout cult star, Bruce Campbell. Raimi tapped the director of a »

Evil Dead Alive at Friday Box Office with $11.9 Million Opening Day

9 hours ago | TheHDRoom | See recent TheHDRoom news »

Columbia TriStar's remake of Evil Dead was propelled by a wave of positive reviews and promises of excessive gore to a strong opening day at the North American box office. Steven Spielberg's Jurassic Park 3D also opening strong in second place, while last weekend's champ G.I. Joe: Retaliation slipped to third.

Evil Dead bowed at 3,025 locations to the tune of $11.9 million during its first 24 hours of release. With a production budget estimated at only $17 million, the remake of Sam Raimi's classic with Raimi and Bruce Campbell serving as producers will easily top $20 million through Sunday, which also happens to be more than the previous three Evil Dead films made at the box office combined during their theatrical runs. Somewhere between $25 and $30 million seems a safe bet for Evil Dead's opening weekend.

'Evil Dead' Leads Friday Pack, 'Jurassic Park 3D' Stomps in Second

12 hours ago | Thompson on Hollywood | See recent Thompson on Hollywood news »

"The Evil Dead" opened well enough on Friday to make it a likely fifth horror-related film to make #1 in 2013.  The twelve top-ranked horror flicks thus far have kept the year's to-date grosses from falling off more than they might have otherwise due to several underperforming costly would-be tentpoles. The Sony remake of Sam Raimi's classic cult 1980s gorefest should prove an easy #1 for the weekend. The combined Thursday night/Friday gross could be the high end of its performance, however. The total will be significantly above its production budget, and even if it falls fast the ultimate worldwide performance and post-theater appeal should make it a solid success. In second place for the day was the 3-D relaunch of another blast from the past, "Jurassic Park." Its Friday gross looks to be about the same as that of "Titanic 3D" last year. Two key differences -- that reissue opened two days earlier, »

Evil Dead: 5 Ways the Horror Flick Is a Shock to the System

13 hours ago | E! Online | See recent E! Online news »

After watching the red band trailer over and over the big day is here. Evil Dead has hit theaters! Produced by writer-director Sam Raimi and star Bruce Campbell (Burn Notice) of 1981's The Evil Dead, the creative reins for this reimagining were handed off to new writer-director Fede Alvarez. Alvarez originally met with Raimi to produce a full-length feature based on his short Panic Attack (2009). When that film got put on hold, Raimi asked the young filmmaker if he'd be interested rebooting Evil Dead. He definitely was. Fans of the splatter genre should be too. The premise is nearly identical to the original: Two guys and three gals decide to spend a weekend in a old wooden shack and accidentally unleash the dead »

'Evil Dead' scares up big Friday box office numbers

15 hours ago | Pop2it | See recent Pop2it news »

The remake of "Evil Dead" brought horror fans out in force on Friday (April 5), snagging the top box-office spot in the process.

The movie, produced by original "Evil Dead" director and star Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell, earned $11.9 million on Friday (including $1.8 million from late-night shows on Thursday). It's now on pace to make $25 million or more for the weekend, ahead of initial projections of around $20 million.

The 3D rerelease of "Jurassic Park" took second place Friday with an estimated $7 million haul. That's in line with what forecasters were predicting and should put it on par with the $17.3 million "Titanic 3D" made on the same weekend last year.

Last weekend's top movies, "G.I. Joe: Retaliation" ($6.7 million) and "The Croods" ($5.8 million), dropped to third and fourth on Friday. "Tyler Perry's Temptation" rounds out the Top 5 with $3.4 million.  »

The Evil Dead Remake Was Insanely Awesome!

15 hours ago | GeekTyrant | See recent GeekTyrant news »

First of all, I'm a huge fan Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell's Evil Dead franchise. Evil Dead was the first real horror movie I saw when I was a kid, and from that moment on, I was hooked on the horror genre. Ever since Evil Dead I've enjoyed watching horror films both good, bad, and so bad they're good. I was a little pissed off when I heard that Evil Dead was going to get remade. I hate remakes; I'm not a big fan of the unoriginality of Hollywood these days. But the more I heard about the film, the more that Raimi talked about the reasons he wanted it remade, the more that shell of remake hatred started to break down. Raimi's original vision for The Evil Dead was a hardcore horror story. I think his original movie delivers that, but there's still a lot of unintentional cheesy campiness, »

Box Office: ‘Evil Dead’ Looks Lively With $12 Million Friday Haul

17 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Sony’s “Evil Dead,” a remake that raises Sam Raimi’s 1981 original from its cult classic grave, is rising slightly higher than expectations this weekend. “Evil Dead” earned $11.9 million Friday, with a three-day haul of around $27 million projected.

The TriStar, FilmDistrict and Ghost House Productions release got off to a strong start against players with a little broader appeal this frame, including Universal’s “Jurassic Park” 3D rerelease and Fox-DreamWorks Animations “The Croods.” Friday will almost definitely be the scarer’s strongest day, with that early jump quite certainly enough positioning the film to win the weekend.

Behind it, “Jurassic Park” is falling tightly in line with expectations that were a little unsure heading into the weekend. The actioner took $7 million Friday for second, and will likely land in the high teens through Sunday as expected, but a pair of strong holdovers are expected to muscle it down to fourth place in that time. »

Today’s film is the 2005 short El Cojonudo. The film is directed by Fede Alvarez, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Rodo Sayagues. Alvarez gained attention as a filmmaker with a series of short films, some of which caught the eye of Sam Raimi. Alvarez, however, really rose to prominence when he was tapped by Raimi to make his feature film debut with Evil Dead, a remake of Raimi’s 1981 horror classic. Evil Dead opened in North American theatres this weekend.

Remake of Raimi's Early '80s Cult Classic to Top Domestic Box Office This Weekend

22 hours ago | Alt Film Guide | See recent Alt Film Guide news »

Remake of Raimi's early '80s cult classic (and minor box-office performer) to easily surpass Jurassic Park 3D rerelease to land at the top of the domestic chart This past weekend, the no. 1 release at the Us/Canada -- actually, around the world -- box office was the widely panned 3D-converted sequel of a widely panned flick based on a toy. This weekend (April 6-8), in addition to the 3D toy-movie sequel mentioned above, two of the other top four movies on the domestic b.o. chart will be the remake of a bloody cult classic and the 3D-converted relaunch of a 1993 horror blockbuster. As the old saying goes, moviegoers are eager, thirsty, yearning for fresh, original content. That surely helps to explain why the brought-back-to-life Evil Dead will be this early April weekend's top film, likely to be followed by (toy movie sequel) G.I. Joe: Retaliation, the animated The Croods, »

Evil Dead is a Bloody Spectacle: A Movie Review

Director: Fede Alvarez. Writers: Fede Alvarez, Diablo Cody, Sam Raimi and Rodo Sayagues. Cast: Jane Levy, Shiloh Fernandez, Lou Taylor Pucci, Jessica Lucas and Elizabeth Blackmore. Fede Alvarez's version of the Evil Dead takes place thirty-two years after the original. Sam Raimi is still here to produce this version, along with former showrunner Bruce Campbell. But, the 2013 version is much bloodier than the original. Evil Dead fans might be disappointed by the lack of campy humour from the first film, but Alvarez's interpretation is quite spine-chilling. Most horror fans will be satisfied by this new vision. The story has changed somewhat from the original. Instead of a sex romp, five friends set off for an isolated cabin for a drug intervention; Mia (Jane Levy) is the addict. The others vow to stay at the location, until Mia gets clean. Mia encounters more challenges, however. A friend, Eric (Lou Taylor Pucci »

From Sam Raimi to Peter Jackson, horror has always been a great way for directors to get a career start: as long as they provide marketable gore, they can pretty much make whatever they want. David Cronenberg used the tactic too, but his early films are perhaps closer to science fiction.

Scanners was his big breakthrough success. It fulfilled the basic horror requirements with little more than a single image – the exploding head – but it was such a strong image that it sparked a trend in the early 80s. Director: Fede Alvarez Writer: Fede Alvarez, Rodo Sayagues Starring: Jane Levy, Shiloh Fernandez, Jessica Lucas, Elizabeth Blackmore, Lou Taylor Pucci Last year, The Cabin in the Woods masterfully lampooned and commented on the traditional horror cliche originally contributed to by Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead. Now, Fede Alvarez’s reboot reminds us that the formula is a classic for a reason: it’s awesome. In the 2013 Evil Dead, Olivia (Jessica Lucas), Eric (Lou Taylor Pucci), and David (Shiloh Fernandez) and his girlfriend Natalie (Elizabeth Blackmore) are intent on aiding David’s sister Mia (Jane Levy) through detox in the isolation of a cabin full of childhood memories. When they discover a spooky book in the basement, they open the door to demonic intrusion, and all hell breaks loose–literally. While Alvarez’s Evil Dead is a reboot rather than remake and thus contains dozens of differences from the original film, »
