In Gregory Widen's 1995 horror film "The Prophecy," angels look like ordinary people but are a little ... off. They are typically clad in black suits, but move like birds, snapping their heads around quickly, as if constantly aware of potential danger. They also have unnatural balance, able to perch on the edges of buildings or the backs of chairs without toppling over. When an angel calls Uziel (Jeff Cadiente) dies in the first "Prophecy," a medical examiner finds that the corpse is missing its eyes and that its blood chemistry is similar to that of an unborn fetus. Angels, it seems, are also intersex, possessing both a penis and a vagina. Angels, it seems, lurk among us, resentful of humanity.

"I have always had this knowledge that I could make any man fall in love with me if I really tried... And I think maybe it's ruined my life." This line really cuts deep. A24 has revealed an official trailer for an indie drama titled Janet Planet, marking the feature directorial debut of playwright Annie Baker. This first premiered at the 2023 Telluride Film Festival last year, playing at the New York Film Festival (NYFF) and this year's Berlin Film Festival a few months ago. In her debut feature film, the Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Annie Baker captures a child’s experience of time passing and the ineffability of a daughter falling out of love with her mother as she spends more time with her. The story follows 11-year-old Lacy, who spends the summer of 1991 at home, enthralled by her own imagination and the attention of her mother, Janet. As the months pass,...

The bond between a mother and daughter is, for lack of a better term, always fraught.
In playwright-turned-filmmaker Annie Baker’s feature directorial debut, that relationship is pulled to its edges as “Mare of Easttown” Emmy winner Julianne Nicholson plays Janet, a mother called upon by her preteen daughter Lacy (Zoe Ziegler) to pick her up from summer camp. Lacy’s reason? She’s on the verge of a nervous breakdown. But maybe so is Janet. “Every moment in my life is hell,” Lacy tells her mother.
Baker’s “Janet Planet” follows Janet through Lacy’s eyes as the mother-daughter duo delve into a codependent balance onscreen, with Janet cycling through relationships and other relatable ups and downs. Elias Koteas, Sophie Okonedo, and Will Patton also star in the feature, which is set in 1991.

The Chicago P.D. cast loses actress Tracy Spiridakos this season.
Tracy plays Detective Hailey Upton and is filming her final episodes for Season 11.
Some uncharted territory lies ahead for the hit NBC drama, but fans have also become familiar with stars leaving the One Chicago shows.
Jesse Lee Soffer ended his run as Detective Jay Halstead last season. His exit left fans wanting more, though.
With Tracy’s exit, the writers and the showrunner must provide better closure. Bringing back Jesse to help her do it could be a nice surprise.
Several Chicago P.D. cast members hinted at how much they will miss Tracy. One co-worker even posted “#SaveUpton.”

In 1995, Gregory Widen, writer of Backdraft and Highlander set out to tell a story about the darker side of angels with The Prophecy, formerly known as Daemons and God’s Army. The story involved an archangel named Gabriel, played by the absolute legend that is Christopher Walken, who had become jealous of God’s love for human beings. Or as he referred to us… monkeys. Does that make Ross from Friends our daddy? I knew some ladies (and men) in the 90s that would have totally been into that Look, We’Re Getting Sidetracked. Maple Syrup Massacre is an editorial series where Joe Lipsett dissects the themes, conventions and contributions of new and classic Canadian horror films. Spoilers follow…
It would be disingenuous to suggest that Atom Egoyan’s The Adjuster is a horror film.
Psychological thriller is more apt descriptor, though audiences seeking scary set pieces will walk away unsatisfied. Despite this, The Adjuster has a narrative of thriller tropes, including a large number of psychosexual relationships, characters adopting dual roles (or simply role playing) and an ending that encourages audiences to re-evaluate what they have seen.
Egoyan is one of Canada’s most significant contemporary directors, though internationally his work is known principally in art cinema and film festival circles. In the 90s, Egoyan was a symbol of national pride; he, along with David Cronenberg, was essentially the face of English-language Canadian film. NBC’s Chicago world became a TV universe 10 years ago with the debut of Chicago P.D., the first spinoff of Chicago Fire and the second of four series in that Windy City franchise. Premiering on January 8, 2014, Chicago P.D.follows the fictional District 21’s Intelligence Unit and its leader, Sgt. Hank Voight (Jason Beghe), who certainly keeps order but doesn’t always follow the law. And as Voight and his team dealt with threats both criminal and political over the last decade, IMDb voters decided that the following P.D. episodes were the best of the series. (A word of warning: The case files below contain spoilers for the first 10 seasons!) 10. Season 5, Episode 21: “Allegiance” After Olinksy (Elias Koteas) is charged with the murder of the man who killed Voight’s son, Voight calls in a favor to clear his colleague’s name. When it comes to religious-themed horror, there are a few films out there worth watching and when it comes to the early to mid-1990s, a few films really stand out in the dark, moody horror realm. These genres overlap quite a bit, and one stellar example of dark, moody, religious horror is the 1995 film The Prophecy (watch it Here), starring Christopher Walken as the archangel Gabriel, Elias Koteas, Virginia Madsen, Viggo Mortensen, Eric Stoltz, and Amanda Plummer. The film had a stacked cast for 1995 and it seemed to do decently in horror circles but not so much outside of that. So, what happened to The Prophecy?
What is The Prophecy about?...

About halfway through playwright Annie Baker’s self-assured and pitch-perfect directorial debut Janet Planet, 11-year-old Lacy (Zoe Ziegler) rolls over in bed and turns to her mother Janet (Julianne Nicholson) with an innocent prompt. “You know what’s funny?” she asks. “Every moment of my life is hell.” At such a gentle moment, in such a casual way, she delivers a melodramatic gut-punch. You can’t help choking out a laugh.
Throughout this existential comedy, lighthearted coming-of-age drama, and sublime slice of Western Massachusetts life, Lacy has a habit of expressing herself in unintentionally funny, wounding ways to her mother. It’s a characteristic that’s baked into their codependent relationship that Lacy struggles to maintain in the months before she begins sixth grade. An outcast amongst her peers, she tests her mother’s patience and devotion, threatening to kill herself if she doesn’t help her escape summer camp.

Playwright Annie Baker has developed a distinctive style in which silences often speak louder than words, the words themselves mean more than what’s actually said, and routine conversations and events have the power of earth-shattering revelations. It’s an approach to drama that demands us to pay close attention to every line of dialogue and every flicker of emotion on an actor’s face, lest we miss crucial details. In some ways, that’s a deeply cinematic approach to dramaturgy, recalling the economy of Robert Bresson and Harold Pinter’s work, except that Baker’s is far more emotionally immediate.
The plot of Baker’s quiet and often moving feature directorial debut, Janet Planet, details the bond between 11-year-old Lacy (Zoe Ziegler) and her acupuncturist mother, Janet (Julianne Nicholson), in rural Western Massachusetts in the summer of 1991 just before Lacy enters the sixth grade. With the release of Brian Duffield's "No One Will Save You" on Hulu this week, I wanted to revisit a freaky alien abduction flick that doesn't get enough attention. Olatunde Osunsanmi's faux documentary thriller "The Fourth Kind" approaches extraterrestrial horror from both an inquisitive and frightening angle by treating the story as real. Osunsanmi uses Alaskian isolation as a backdrop for otherworldly horror, preying on our fears of little green men who the government just confessed do exist. I can't even say aliens tie into fears of the unknown anymore. What a world!

The first thing we hear from the 11-year-old Lacy in playwright Annie Baker’s contemplative yet cold-to-the-touch film debut “Janet Planet” is that she will kill herself.
Okay, perhaps some context is necessary, as her threat isn’t nearly as dark as it sounds—in fact, it lands with a chuckle. Played with precocious seriousness by newcomer Zoe Ziegler in an observant performance, the tight-lipped and often unsmiling Lacy happens to be stuck at a cheesy summer camp she can’t stand and is begging her mom on the other end of the phone line to come and pick her up, exaggerating with her sarcastic words just how desperate she is.
Studiously bespectacled, dressed in oversized tees and sporting a nerdy mid-part, Lacy wins her case eventually, proving at once that she is still very much a mommy’s girl despite looking like an independent and amusingly know-it-all heroine—a...

It’s almost cosmic, the way kids start out as nothing more than a twinkle in their mother’s eye. Then they’re born into heavenly little bodies, orbiting the adults who made them like tiny moons, until such time that they overcome their parents’ gravitational pull. So it is with “Janet Planet,” one of those intensely personal portraits of childhood that we’ve come to expect — and appreciate — from A24, the indie studio behind “Moonlight” and “Lady Bird” and “Aftersun” and “Eighth Grade” (the example this one most resembles). The list goes on.
Seriously, as many as 24 different A24 movies could fit this category — and now we get playwright Annie Baker’s micro-normous take: a small but incredibly specific movie that feels every bit as attentively crafted and evocative as those earlier titles, while remaining wholly unique and distinct from them. It’s striking proof of an original sensibility.

Who could have guessed that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird’s small, black-and-white indie comic about anthropomorphic crime-fighting turtles that began as a parody of superhero storytelling would not only be around forty years later but also have the love and investment of several generations of fans? Whether you discovered the Turtles through the toys, the various TV shows, or the movies, audiences have been lucky enough to have at least one defining iteration of these heroes.
Alongside Batman and Spider-Man, the Turtles have had the most consistent luck with their onscreen history. One night, two struggling cartoonists had what turned out to be a billion-dollar idea. What if Frank Miller’s Daredevil had human-sized turtles in it? From that question came the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, a quartet of brothers named after Renaissance artists who fought the Shredder and his Foot Clan (a spoof of perpetual Daredevil baddies the Hand). Who could have guessed that the self-published comic Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird created would launch a phenomenon, one that survived its first boom in the late ‘80s and crash in the mid-1990s? It has since gone on to become an enduring pop culture franchise which is still going strong after several decades. Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo, and Raphael have leaped out of the sewers and into every type of media, including video games and toys. Nonetheless, the characters are never more exciting than when they hit the big screen.

On the surface, David Cronenberg’s 1996 adaptation of J.G. Ballard’s 1973 novel Crash is a drama about an unlikely group of people who come together over their shared fascination with car crashes.

He’s a successful film producer in an open marriage to wife Catherine; both partners routinely engage in casual sex with co-workers and strangers alike, seemingly in pursuit of upending their relationship ennui.
The sex, which is captured by Ballard in incredibly specific and laborious prose, is cold, dispassionate, and almost clinical. As James Gunn and Peter Safran reshape the DC universe at Warner Bros. Discovery, film and TV aren’t the only mediums where iconic characters like Batman, Harley Quinn and the Joker are taking on new lives.
Thanks to an expansive, multiyear first-look deal with Spotify, DC has attracted new and returning fans to its rich IP — without being beholden to the intricacies of a mapped-out multiverse, the same actors portraying its characters or the costs of a typical high-wattage and effects-heavy superhero production.
The partnership kicked off in earnest last year, when Spotify and DC released an original story about Batman for an audio series penned by The Dark Knight scribe David S. Goyer. Starring Winston Duke as Bruce Wayne, Batman Unburied took on a decidedly darker tone as a psychological thriller that followed Bruce tracking down a serial killer and confronting his own demons along the way. Casey Jones has appeared alongside his friends the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in many adaptations of the comic-book series, but the vigilante has never received his own movie. But if Jason Eisener had his way, we’d be watching that Casey Jones movie right now.

‘Chicago P.D.’: Dick Wolf Told 2 Cast Members ‘I Can Kill You at Anytime’ at the 1st Dinner They Had
Chicago P.D. began as a spinoff of Chicago Fire. But while the two NBC shows have crossed over time and again, they remain individual fan favorites in their own right.
Together these two, along with Chicago Med and the short-lived Chicago Justice, are part of the network’s Chicago franchise. But even big fans might be shocked by this bit of behind-the-scenes trivia regarding co-creator Dick Wolf.
NBC’s ‘Chicago’ franchise has featured some tragic deaths
Given the dangerous nature of the titular professions, fans should enter the Chicago shows expecting the occasional character death. The series shows have definitely delivered on that front.
Chicago P.D. in particular perhaps features the greatest likelihood of bloodshed as Detective Sergeant Hank Voight (Jason Beghe) and his Intelligence Unit put themselves in harm’s way to do their duty. Alvin Olinsky (Elias Koteas), a key part of the show’s first five seasons,...

NBC police drama Chicago P.D. premiered in 2014, it has amassed quite a following since. This spin-off of Chicago Fire focuses on the fictional 21st District, led by Detective Sergeant Hank Voight.
As with any show, especially one following law enforcement, there have been a few losses along the way. And while that is to be expected, one character, in particular, left many fans absolutely devastated. In fact, in an interview, actor Marina Squerciati admitted that it made her cry.
Marina Squerciati and the lie detector test
A few years ago, Marina Squerciti, who plays Officer Kim Burgess, teamed up with Patrick John Flueger (who plays Adam Ruzek) for a very interesting “interview” on the official One Chicago YouTube that included a lie detector test.
Squerciati answered questions while hooked up to the lie detector test, while Flueger administered them to her. Interestingly, one of his first questions to her was:...

Even in 1995, it was easy to snicker at Iain Softley's computer-centric cyber-thriller "Hackers." Firstly, because computer technology is so complex, and develops so quickly, any mention of modern cyber-gear would definitely be dated only a year later. Actual computer experts saw right through Softley's and screenwriter Rafael Moreu's attempts at being cutting edge.
Additionally, Softley was presented with an interesting problem. While computer hackers occupied an exciting new technological subculture in 1995, people sitting at keyboards weren't very cinematically dynamic. Softley solved this problem by turning computer usage into something a little more abstract, using glowing animations, swirling cameras, and projecting images onto his actors' faces to make his film visually interesting.
Softley also had to more or less create his own version of hacker culture from the ground up. He dressed his teen protagonists in complex neo-punk garb and invented their own patois. He assembled a glorious three-volume...

If you were a kid during the spring of 1990, there was only one movie that mattered to you, and it was Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. At the time, the world was in the grip of Turtle-Mania, with the Saturday morning cartoon and the toys all the rage. Toy stores couldn’t keep them in stock, and kids worldwide were obsessed with the kick-ass turtles. There was Leonardo, the leader; Raphael, the streetwise, tough one; Michelangelo, the prankster and Donatello, the brains. Plus, they had Splinter, the mutant rat mentor, while they battled “The Foot Clan” and their leader, the evil Shredder. Many folks don’t remember that the Ninja Turtles were based on a pretty grim and dark comic book series, and indeed the film, while taking elements from the comics, was heavily inspired by the cartoon.

With the popularity of nostalgia-driven shows like "Stranger Things," interest in '80s pop culture always seems to be taking new and exciting directions. One such example is the fascination with the classic movies of the decade. Sure, everyone knows about the heavy hitters like "Back to the Future," " E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial," "The Terminator," and "The Breakfast Club." Yet, there are many other films from the 1980s that need respect, and that's what this list is about.
Here, we'll look at the movies of the '80s that deserve some love and devotion. These movies should become references in TV shows, have cosplays made of them, or at least be included in your next '80s movie marathon. So make sure to grab your favorite scrunchie, a bowl of popcorn, and a can of Tab (or whatever soda you can safely drink), so we can totally explore some fantastic...

Welcome to the return of Intermission, a spin-off podcast from The Film Stage Show. Led by yours truly, Michael Snydel, I invite a guest to discuss an arthouse, foreign, or experimental film of their choice.
For the fourteenth episode, I talked to the editor-in-chief/co-founder of The Film Stage, Jordan Raup, about Canadian auteur Atom Egoyan’s 1994 erotic melodrama Exotica (available on a new Criterion Collection disc and alongside Calendar, The Sweet Hereafter, and The Adjustor on the Criterion Channel).
At first blush, Egoyan’s film defies easy categorization with its recursive structure, multiple central characters, and the director’s own penchant for throwing viewers into previously defined relationships. Exotica’s dizzying construction only amplifies those sensations with the characters’ winding stream-of-consciousness monologues, Dp Paul Sarossy’s furtive camerawork, and Mychael Danna’s Egyptian-influenced score.
The plot isn’t easily described, but it can be distilled down to the intersection...

Over 20 years later and Viggo Mortensen is still talking about David Cronenberg’s Cannes shocker “Crash.”
The “Crimes of the Future” star joins forces for the fourth time with visionary director David Cronenberg, and Mortensen revealed that while the new film may cause a stir at Cannes this year, it still will pale in comparison to the “big scandal” caused by Cronenberg’s “Crash” in 1996. And, according to Mortensen, last year’s Cannes Palme d’Or winner “Titane” was a less visionary spin on car-centric body horror.
“In my opinion, no offense to the director of ‘Titane’ [Julia Ducournau], but ‘Crash’ was head and shoulders above that movie, because it wasn’t just about superficial shock value and unconventional imagery,” Mortensen told The Hollywood Reporter. “There was a story beneath it, there was true character exploration in ‘Crash,’ much more than in ‘Titane,’ I think.”
