'Meatballs' on TV: Only $25!

51 minutes ago | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

The war for your wallet may be shifting from DVD stores to your living room. Just yesterday, our own Jessica Barnes described the price war between Walmart, Target and Amazon as the three retailers have temporarily slashed their profits and passed the savings on to you. Now comes word that Sony will pre-empt retailers by making their animated hit Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs available exclusively to owners of selected Sony television sets and networked Blu-ray players more than a month before it's released on DVD. Sony, however, expects you to slash your savings and pass the profits on to them, charging $24.95 for a rental.

That's a big chunk of change for a pay-per-view movie, dramatically higher than cable and satellite systems charge for pay-per-view flicks in their window of availability before DVD and Blu-ray release. Details from a business standpoint are provided in The New York Times -- »

Steven Spielberg & Will Smith ‘Oldboy’ Remake Dead!

1 hour ago | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

I think just about every fan of Park Chan-wook’s 2003 Korean masterpiece, Oldboy, can breathe a lot easier now and for the foreseeable future. Back in July we told you that an Oldboy remake (or new adaptation of the source comics) directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Will Smith was sadly back still in development. A complicated mess of legal turns meant that any original troubles that may have hindered the project had disappeared, and at that time it looked like we’d all have to face a world where an Oldboy remake existed.

Well, not anymore!

According to a “trusted source” at Latino Review (and these guys are usually pretty spot-on when it comes to this sort of stuff), Spielberg and Smith’s Oldboy remake is firmly dead… on the ground… with its tongue cut out (Oldboy fans, you know what I’m talking about). Word is that Mandate »

Is the Oldboy Remake Dead?

1 hour ago | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

You don’t have to be an Asian movie snob to think that remaking Chan-wook Park’s “Oldboy” is probably not a really good idea. But then to announce you’re not really going to remake the Korean movie, but will actually go back to the original Japanese manga source material for your version? As if Park’s version was somehow lacking? That was just bound to rile up a lot of people, especially the aforementioned Asian movie snobs. But that’s all a moot point now, because according to Latino Review, the remake is dead. D-e-d. Dead. Citing “trusted sources”, Lr claims that the remake is dead because Dreamworks and Mandate couldn’t agree on how to proceed with the movie in a timely enough manner. As a result, Steven Spielberg, who was supposed to direct, and Will Smith, who was supposed to star, have walked away from the project. »

Will Smith Goes for Broke With Flowers For Algernon

1 hour ago | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Now that the Smith / Spielberg version of Oldboy has reportedly died a well-deserved death (it's like there's a real version of The Box out there and some lucky Park Chan-Wook fan pushed the button -- do something good with your million bucks, buddy, you earned it!) Will Smith will have to look for other ways to bridge the gap between mainstream success like I Am Legend and the critical praise one suspects he really desires. So, it's come to this: Smith is reportedly looking to star in Flowers for Algernon. The Playlist already took the obvious headline here ("Megastar Goes Full Retard") so I'll have to settle for relating the deal. Pajiba says that Smith is setting up an adaptation of the novel at Sony, where he'll produce and star. Gabriele Muccino, director of Smith's last two awards plays (Seven Pounds and The Pursuit of Happyness) may direct. If you'll »

Spielberg-Smith 'Oldboy' Movie Not Happening

1 hour ago | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

Even though I can't confirm if the recent Will Smith-Flowers for Algernon news is true, if it is, that would limit Smith's ability to do other films, or at least force him to shuffle things around. One movie not affected by this is apparently Oldboy...because that movie is no longer happening.

The nearly always reliable Latino Review says it has heard that DreamWorks and Mandate (studio/prouction company) couldn't come to an agreement on what to do with the original Japanese manga and have folded up their tents. Probably the best thing that could happen, really. More on that in a minute. »

Have Spielberg And Smith Said Goodbye To Remaking Old Boy?

2 hours ago | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Word on the web is that the answer to that question is a big old fat Hell Yeah! Latino Review is reporting that the oft-discussed, continuously derided pairing of director Steven Spielberg and megastar Will Smith on a remake of Park Chan-wook's film Old Boy is officially Doa. News of the planned remake was revealed almost a year ago and was met with immediate criticism. Everytime we covered it on Fsr (here, here, and here) the comment sections were over-whelmingly anti-remake (and anti-Spielberg/Smith). Well now everyone can relax because Dreamworks will not be getting their hands on the film's rights. Per the Lr post, Dreamworks was in negotiations with their Korean production counterpart, Mandate, but "didn’t see eye to eye therefore DreamWorks has apparently walked away." Without Dreamworks there's little to no chance of Spielberg's involvement. And without Spielberg the assumption is that Smith will drop it as well. Lr »

Is The Steven Spielberg And Will Smith 'Oldboy' Adaptation Dead?

2 hours ago | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

News has been very quiet on the "Oldboy" front since Steven Spielberg and Will Smith were initially announced for the project — and according to one source, that's because the film is no longer happening.

Latino Review reports that Smith and Spielberg are no longer attached to "Oldboy," saying that official news should make the rounds sometime soon.

For now, the report is far from official, but the alleged demise of "Oldboy" would certainly explain why we haven't heard much about the project in close to a year.

Spielberg's film would have been an adaptation of the original manga series written by Garon Tsuchiya and illustrated by Nobuaki Minegishi, not a remake of the Japanese "Oldboy" as many initially speculated. Spielberg's DreamWorks and Mandate Pictures were in the process of securing the film rights to the "Oldboy" manga, but Latino Review reports that creative differences between the two companies have killed the project. »

'Oldboy' is Dead! Long Live the Real 'Oldboy!'

3 hours ago | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Looks like our friends over at Latino Review have some news on that Oldboy remake that would have starred Will Smith with Steven Spielberg directing. The initial news about this remake (which actually would have been an adaptation of "the Japanese manga by Nobuaki Minegishi and Garon Tsuchiya") had fans of the uber-violent and disturbing cult film confused and distressed, to say the least. (Okay, irate. They were irate.) I haven't read the manga, but I find it hard to believe that it would be any easier to adapt for a Smith/Spielberg-type audience than the movie Oldboy itself. Either way, it's bananas.

So fans can rest easy because a trusted source has tipped off Lr that the whole shebang is as dead as a doornail because "Mandate and DreamWorks didn't see eye to eye, therefore DreamWorks has apparently walked away." And the thing with Latino Review is that their trusted sources are, »

Will Smith's Oldboy Remake Is Dead

4 hours ago | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

We were reporting back in June that the planned Oldboy remake, starring Will Smith and directed by Steven Spielberg, was hitting some snags on its way to becoming a horrible reality. Now, according to Latino Review, the final blow has been struck. DreamWorks and Mandate Films couldn't reach an agreement as they worked on getting the rights to the original manga, and the project died as a result. Fans of the original Park Chan-wook film are probably dancing in the streets with joy right now, and who can blame them? A seminal, violent, envelope-pushing film was going to be remade as some kind of Hollywood blockbuster, starring Will Smith, a guy who doesn't know how to be mean on camera. Yes, it was going to be based on the original manga, and not a remake of the film, but that's like making a movie based on the short stories of »

Best News You’ll Hear Today: Old Boy Remake Canned

5 hours ago | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

Having recently revisited Park Chan-wook’s Oldboy, I’ve come to the conclusion that that film has a little slice of everything. It has incredibly light humor followed by the darkest of gallows humor,  and then proceeds to toss any funny business aside to strike at some of the darkest themes I’ve ever seen in a film. It’s one of those movies that could only be satisfactorily completed in another country with values and tolerance levels significantly different from our own.

Which is why the idea that Steven Spielberg would be teaming with Will Smith to deliver a remake of the film was a horrible one indeed. There’s no way they could possibly create something as powerful as the original. It just wasn’t feasible in Hollywood.

The great news is that Latino Review is reporting the remake dead in the water, as Spielberg and Smith have jumped ship. »

OldBoy: Spielberg & Smith Remake canned…for now!

7 hours ago | Affenheimtheater | See recent Affenheimtheater news »

Blarg! Latino Review exclusively reports that Stephen Spielberg and Will Smith’s adaptation of OldBoy (not based on Chan-wook Park’s 20003 film, but the original Japanese manga by Garon Tsuchiya and Nobuaki Minegishi according to Smith) has been canned.

The report doesn’t mention specific reasons, but I guess the licensing problems that appeared last month could have something to do with it. While this may be great news for fans of Park’s amazing adaptation, I don’t think this was Hollywood’s last try to bring this story to the big screen itself.

Will Smith taking Flowers For Algernon?

Will Smith is apparently looking to produce and star in an adaptation of Daniel Keyes' beloved Sf novel Flowers For Algernon. Keyes' book follows Charlie, a mentally impaired man who becomes the guinea pig for an experimental surgery to boost intelligence. He's not the first test subject - the procedure is successfully used on Algernon, a lab mouse. But while Charlie's intelligence triples, he becomes estranged from those around him. Steven Spielberg and Will Smith’s Old Boy is No More

10 hours ago | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Could it be? Have our prayer's been answered? Latino Review is reporting that Steven Spielberg's Old Boy starring Will Smith is dead in the water. Apparently Dreamworks and original Korean production studio Mandate were working together to get the rights to the manga, but the two couldn't reach an agreement, and Dreamworks simply walked away. Spielberg's film was to be an adaptation of the original manga by Garon Tsuchiya and Nobuaki Minegishi, and not a direct remake of Park Chan-wook's Oldboy. I honestly loathed this project a lot less when we learned that they were looking at the manga more than the film, but at the same time it would have been impossible not to compare Spielberg's vision to Park's. Had Spielberg tapped a more compelling actor for the role, I probably would have even been excited for this project. It'd be like Scorsese remaking Infernal Affairs as The »

Sgt. Rock Now Serving Under Director Francis Lawrence

11 hours ago | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

It’s taken nearly twenty years for Producer Joel Silver to bring DC ComicsSgt. Rock to the big screen.  The film has passed through numerous writers and directors and even in today’s comic-book-hero drenched cinema landscape, but it’s hard out there for a guy who just wants to serve his country even though he has no superpowers.  Now it looks like I Am Legend director Francis Lawrence is going take a shot at enlisting the character.  Hit the jump for details.

According to Heat Vision, Lawrence is attached to direct Sgt. Rock with Chad St. John handling the script.  Silver will team up with the world’s best paid and lousiest writer Akiva Goldsman to produce the film.

Sgt. Frank Rock, leader of his infantry unit, Easy Company (but definitely not like the Easy Company soldiers featured in Band of Brothers) first appeared in a 1959 issue of »

2012 Any Good?

11 hours ago | www.canmag.com | See recent CanMag news »

I adored Independence Day when it first came out. Tons of action, tons of destruction, tons of comedy and Will Smith made a perfect combo. The Roland Emmerich tried to talk some Global Warming sense into me with The Day After Tomorrow, a film that might have actually hurt any environmentalist's cause by overdoing just about everything. The film had a few visuals, but ended up being pretty lame. Then came 10,000 BC, and I immediately wanted to see it. I did, and I hated it. Besides a few visuals, I was once again left with a film that had nothing real to offer. So now comes 2012, a film that looks to be Emmerich's coup de gras.

Judging by the first reviews for the film, the director does (finally) succeed at making a film that pulls off some realistic destruction. If only the characters could live up to the environments in which they are placed. »

Will Smith Taking on 'Flowers for Algernon'?

11 hours ago | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

Another non-confirmed bit o' casting goodness, which comes to us from Pajiba. How's this strike you: Will Smith to produce and star in an update of Flowers for Algernon? There are a plenty of details here and taken at face value, it's not too hard a story to believe.

According to Pajiba's source, Smiths's Overbrook Entertainment will partner up with Polsky Films and Tracy Nyberg, an associate producer on Hancock and Smith's assistant during the production of I Am Legend to steer this update of the 1959 novel, which won Cliff Robertson the Best Actor trophy in 1969 (that version was called Charly).

It's time to bring Kirk Lazarus into the discussion: Smith shouldn't go "full retard," although the temptation has to be pretty powerful. Big Willie Style would play a mentally retarded man who undergoes experimental surgery to increase his intelligence. It works, by the way: Charlie attains a genius-level Iq, »

Will Smiths Remake of Old Boy Is Not Happening

14 hours ago | MoviesOnline.ca | See recent MoviesOnline news »

The last we heard of the remake of Oldboy it was  not actually a remake but was going to be based off the Manga which inspired the original film. The original Oldboy is one of the greatest movies ever made and the remake could have been good... shame its dead.

LatinoReview is reporting from a reliable source that the Steven Spielberg project which was going to star Will Smith is not happening. It seems that Dreamworks could not come to terms with the people who own the rights and as such its being benched. We will see where this one goes.

Have you seen Oldboy? Would a remake have been worth it? Sound off. »

Oldboy remake is Dead!

When it's just not meant to happen, let it go. And so apparently Will Smith and Steven Spielberg have put their Oldboy re-adaptation to rest once and for all. Dreamworks and Mandate pictures have had a hard time from the get go with that project, first shouldering backlash from fans of the Chan-Wook Park original film -ok, it was me, but in my universe I count- then having to navigate an endless maze of legal rights. But it was internal rumblings that drove the final... »

Flowers for Will Smith

18 hours ago | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

Flowers for Algernon is a story that I first read in grade school and yet remember fondly. It’s the story of Charlie, a mentally handicapped man who undergoes an experiment that drastically raises his Iq. Though pretty sentimental and pungent in weepy emotions, there is a lot that it says about intelligence and the way in which we relate to each other. Cliff Robertson (who you may remember as Uncle Ben from Spider-Man)  earned an Academy Award in a 1968 adaptation, Charly. Now, according to Pajiba, who cite inside sources, Will Smith is planning to produce and star in an update of Flowers for Algernon. Will Smith is not foreign to sentimental films, having starred in movies like The Pursuit of Happyness and Seven Pounds. Unfortunately, he also has about twenty-five projects in development. Whether he eventually gets to them all, Algernon may have to wait. But if he does »

Will Smith Interested in Picking Up Some Flowers for Algernon?

19 hours ago | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

We've seen Will Smith fight aggressive aliens, infectious bloodthirsty humans, and self-righteous robots, but when all is said and done, it's really awe inspiring to see him put away the guns and "Aw, hell no!" attitude when he buckles down for a serious drama. So it pleases me to see that Pajiba has a scoop about Will Smith taking on the lead role (as well as producing) a contemporary adaptation of the Daniel Keyes' short story and subsequent novel Flowers for Algernon, the story of Charlie, a mentally challenged man, who is the first human test subject for an experimental surgery that artificially increases intelligence. After a successful experiment on the titular lab mouse Algernon, the surgery is then applied to Charlie, raising his Iq from 68 to 185. But his newfound intelligence comes at the cost of his ability to socialize normally as he becomes alienated from those who are »
