One of my pals emailed me today about an interesting video mural that's installed in the elevator of the Standard Hotel in New York City. Displayed through the glass wall inside the elevator is a surreal, short film created by director Marco Brambilla, the guy that gave us the cheesy '90s flicks Demolition Man and Excess Baggage and then fell off of Hollywood's radar. Brambilla was asked by the owner of the Standard Hotel to think up a film that the elevator passengers could watch while going up or down. Given complete autonomy to dream up whatever he liked, Brambilla came up with "Civilization", a three-minute video showing a journey from Hell to Heaven -- or, if you're headed from a top floor down, Heaven to Hell -- using clips from hundreds of Hollywood movies over the years. The end product is fascinating, trippy, mesmerizing and I would imagine

Hollywood may be slowing down in anticipation of the three-day Fourth of July weekend, but its citizens have still been tweeting hard today in the Twitter-Wood feed. Arnold Schwarzenegger in particular has been keeping his TwitterBerry application close in the face of California’s unresolved budget problems. In fact, today he met a rather enthusiastic fan that he will tell you about in perhaps one too many details.
America’s Independence Day means parties galore, and the faces of Twitter-Wood have been busy making plans. Emmy Rossum received a preemptive tweet-vite for an Evite from Jessica Simpson (along with a generous compliment), and Russell Brand today pondered aloud and uncensored what he will wear to P. Diddy’s infamous white party affair. Check out all of this and some grumbles from New Orleans on the set of “Father of Invention” below in the Twitter-Wood report for July 2, 2009.

Something happened to movies in the past few decades where good ideas started to disappear. Characters played by solid actors have given way to special effects and CGI. You don’t see a mega action hero like Arnold Schwarzenegger anymore or even an A-list star like Tom Cruise drawing crowds. It’s all about recognizing the nostalgia in the flimsy source, not the talent involved in adapting it.
When studios began risking hundreds of millions on blockbuster titles, they minimized potential disasters by churning out sequels and adapting well-known properties. It has worked for quite a while, selling it back to the public as more of what they paid to see before. Comic books and video games dominated the silver screen until the major names were squeezed. Then studios moved to toys, cartoons, and board game movies. Which brings us to the next bad idea: Arcade games. Because it worked so well with Street Fighter,

After a few rumored choices on a short list of directors, producer Robert Rodriguez has selected his pick to film Predators. Fox and Rodriguez have narrowed the position down to Nimrod Antal (Vacancy). (If you’re wondering about the first name, it’s Hungarian.)
In an interview with AICN, Rodriguez said he didn’t base his decision on the hotel thriller but on Antal’s upcoming heist movie Armored, which stars Laurence Fishburne, Milo Ventimiglia (from “Heroes”), Matt Dillon, and Jean Reno. Antal’s ability to handle the cast and action while making it look “effortless” is what Rodriguez was looking for in telling this “character driven action movie.” He even compared the relatively new director to Quentin Tarantino.
While Antal will be managing the shot-by-shot arrangements, Rodriguez’s position will be very “hands on” as the production gets underway here in Austin, Texas. Fox has agreed to film it at Troublemaker Studios,

"Vacancy" director Nimrod Antal will be helming "Predators" for 20th Century Fox. Robert Rodriguez will produce the film which is in dire need of aid after the last appalling offering. Alex Litvak & Michael Finch wrote the script. Apparently, the studio is hoping to revive the alien-hunter franchise in a solo outing. That sounds like they're getting back on track...finally. The dreadlocked hunter first obliterated the Central American jungle, making life for Arnold Schwarzenegger very difficult back in 1987.

Previously rumored by the folks at Latino Review to be the frontrunner, Robert Rodriguez has now confirmed to Ain’t it Cool that Nimrod Antal (Vacancy) will direct Predators. Neil Marshall (Doomsday) had also been rumored to be up for the job. While confirming the news to AICN, Rodriguez also offered up some story details for the reboot. The filmmaker, who’s producing and writing the screenplay, says Predators will involve “a very intense group of people stranded on a Predator planet discovering unspeakable horrors”. The first Predator hit the screen in 1987 and starred Arnold Schwarzenegger, Carl Weathers, Jesse Ventura, and Kevin Peter Hall. The story followed an elite team on a mission to rescue hostages from a guerrilla group in Central America. It was directed by John McTiernan (Die Hard). A sequel starring Danny Glover opened in 1990 followed by the mash-up flicks Alien vs. Predator and AvP: Requiem several years later.

Ain't It Cool News spoke with Robert Rodriguez who is producing Predators and Rodriguez confirmed LatinoReview.com's earlier story announcing Nimrod Antal (Vacancy) will be sitting in the director's chair for the proposed "re-inventing [of] the franchise," which started with the Arnold Schwarzenegger action classic in 1987. The film is already set for a July 7, 2010 release, but apparently the script is still being finished, a scenario that seems a bit odd, but the ball seems to be rolling strong. Story details have been kept mum but Rodriguez did tell AICN the film will be a "character driven action movie" and will involve "a very intense group of people stranded on a Predator planet discovering unspeakable horrors (that are not always from outside their group). So like the original movie, the title does have a double meaning. Aliens was a different take on the Alien idea, and an original movie in it's own right,

There are several conflicting reports surrounding Michael Jackson's funeral arrangements and where he'll be buried. Some media outlets are claiming that Michael will be buried at Neverland Ranch, but that's not the case. Due to legal restrictions on burials at private residences, he won't be able to be buried there if he wanted to. According to the Los Angeles Times, Arnold Schwarzenegger had offered his help to get around any bureaucratic obstacles, but it's not looking good. Rumors have also swirled about possible plans for a public viewing Friday or Saturday and a private funeral...

While Michael Jackson's memorials will not be taking place at his Neverland Valley Ranch as had been originally announced, the world's attention has been focused on the pop singer's renowned compound in Los Olivos, California, all week.
In 1988, at the age of 29, Jackson purchased over 2,500 acres of property for about $17 million from a golf course magnate and set about the task of turning it into a fortress of magical, spare-no-expense proportions. To that fanciful end, he ordered the construction of an amusement park with a roller coaster and Ferris wheel, a railroad, a movie theater, stables, an arcade and a zoo, complete with elephants, giraffes, chimpanzees, crocodiles, snakes and a bear. In total, there are 22 buildings on the land, including a mansion,

Los Angeles — Memorial services for Michael Jackson will not be taking place at the Neverland Valley Ranch, according to the late singer's family.
A statement released Wednesday afternoon (July 1) on behalf of the Jackson family clarified previous, unconfirmed information on the matter, which had been reported by multiple outlets.
"Contrary to previous news reports, the Jackson family is officially stating that there will be no public or private viewing at Neverland," the statement reads. "Plans are underway regarding a public memorial for Michael Jackson, and we will announce those plans shortly."
Earlier accounts had stated a public memorial would be held on Friday for the King of Pop at his former residence, the Neverland Valley Ranch, with a private memorial taking place two days later. Neverland was purchased by Jackson in 1988, and

Movie star Alec Baldwin has been given the opportunity to launch his political career in Ohio by a local law firm keen to back a bid to make him the state's next Governor.
The Cooler star has often spoken about his political aspirations and now he has gone public with his plans to retire from acting in 2012, a group of leading Ohio businessmen want him to consider running for office there.
He tells Playboy magazine, "A law firm in a liberal Democratic bastion in Ohio state politics sent me a binder with a cover letter that read: "Mr. Baldwin, here's who we represent, the kinds of cases we handle, our credentials in Ohio state politics. We want you to move to Ohio and run for Governor. We will launch your career.'"
And Baldwin admits he has been tempted by the offer to join the ranks of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jesse Ventura and become a celebrity Governor - or simply run for political office elsewhere.

Predators, the sequel conceived and produced by Robert Rodriguez, may have found a director in Nimrod Antal and not Neil Marshall, as was previously rumored. Antal is a young director, whose credits include the ho-hum thriller Vacancy and the upcoming heist drama Armored, starring Laurence Fishburne and Matt Dillon that opens December 4.
Predators will be based on a Rodriguez treatment written 15 years ago. It's set on a "jungle-like Predator planet" and may include a cameo from Predator star Arnold Schwarzenegger. Alex Litvak is writing the script.

"Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines" gets praised for trying to explain the complicated franchise and its many timelines. Unfortunately, it is arguably the worst installment in the first trilogy. Today we have another example of how the film tries to explain parts of the story with the results turning out to be silly and inappropriate. "T3" was released on DVD years ago, but it is only now that we (and probably many of you) are learning that it contains a deleted scene that explains why the Terminators look and sound like Arnold Schwarzenegger. [via /Film] The scene, which was actually included in early prints of the film, shows Chief Master Sergeant William Candy (Schwarzenegger) talking about being chosen for the Terminator project. He has a thick Southern accent, which doesn't sit well with General Brewster. Deleted Scene: If you cannot see the player, click here.

Like many of you, I've never purchased or rented Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines on DVD, so this deleted scene has eluded my attention (update: some people in the comments claim that the scene was actually recorded for the T3 video game, but it was included on the T3 DVD as a deleted scene). For those of you who also missed it, this totally ridiculous sequence reveals why the Terminators look and sound like Arnold Schwarzenegger, and haphazardly explains what happened to Cyberdyne. If this scene was actually in the theatrical cut of the film, I'm sure I would have walked out. And that's saying a lot considering the sequel was all kinds of horrible. It cracks me up that people actually tried to defend this movie over Terminator Salvation... Watch the clip after the jump.

The memorial tweets continued long after I checked the Twitter-Wood feed last night and posted the flurry of reactions to Michael Jackson’s death that were showing up. Today, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger offered his condolences and Paris Hilton, in addition to a steady stream of thoughts about the King of Pop’s death, posted a recent family photo taken with Jackson.
There will surely be more before today’s regular Twitter-Wood update goes up later today, but in the meantime, here are the day’s most recent Michael Jackson-related tweets from Jon Favreau, Mariel Hemingway, Michael Ian Black, and others.

Stars across Hollywood have taken to the Internet in an outpouring of grief after hearing the news of Michael Jackson's tragic death.
Fans and friends were left shaken on Thursday as the news of the music icon's fatal heart attack reverberated around the globe.
Jackson was rushed to UCLA Medical Center after falling into a deep coma following a cardiac arrest at his Holmby Hills mansion in Los Angeles. He was pronounced dead at 2.26 local time.
And as the news broke, celebrities from music, film and TV took to their Twitter.com blogs to explain how the Thriller legend had affected their lives and describe their devastation at his untimely demise.
Big screen veteran Jane Fonda was one of the first to express her upset, remembering the time Jackson came to live with her after he completed filming on his iconic Thriller video.
She writes, "I am stunned. My friend, Michael Jackson is dead. He lived with me for a week on the Golden Pond set after Thriller."
Actress Demi Moore joined in with her husband Ashton Kutcher's plea for the media to respect the privacy of Jackson's three children, tweeting, "I plea to the public to refuse to consume media that does not respect the anonymity of Michael's children."
And young music stars, who had been inspired by the pop singer's four-decade spanning career, joined in the tributes.
Miley Cyrus wrote, "Michael Jackson was my inspiration. Love and blessings," while rocker John Mayer added, "I truly hope he is memorialised as the '83 moonwalking, MTV owning, mesmerising, unstoppable, invincible Michael Jackson."
Sean 'Diddy' Combs explained how much he would miss the superstar: "Michael Jackson showed me that you can actually see the beat. He made the music come to life!! He made me believe in magic. I will miss him!"
And even the world of politics failed to escape feeling the overwhelming loss of pop's greatest performer - former action star-turned-California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger sent out his thoughts to those closest to Jackson.
He adds, "We lost a great entertainer and a pop icon. My thoughts and prayers go out to Michael Jackson's family, friends and fans."

They don't make robots in Africa! Whoop-doo!
We're nearly through the first month of summer, and it feels more like February of last year. I've heard of June gloom before, but this is ridiculous. The acronym for Transformers 2 is Rotf, and Michael Bay must be rolling on the floor, laughing hysterically at all the bad press he's been given as of late. Racist robots, magic hand bandages, and mysterious emails that harangue Paramount for not publicizing the film properly have run rampant through the Internet. Yet all this hasn't stopped the film from breaking the Wednesday box office record with $60.6 million. Heck, that's more than most summer movies make in a month. Not bad for a film being called the worst of its kind ever produced. Most of the fans feel let down, and I haven't heard anyone claiming an unabashed love for it. Doesn't matter, Transformers 2 is
