Sir Michael Caine was left awestruck when his Sleuth co-star Lord Laurence Olivier banned him from addressing him by his official title.
The actor admits he was nervous before starring in the 1972 mystery alongside the revered Olivier, who was made a Lord just two years prior.
But Caine insists Olivier remained down-to-earth despite his prestigious status.
He recalls, "Before we started the movie, he sent me a letter - I think he was Lord Olivier then. He sent me a letter saying, 'It's just occurred to me that you may be wondering how to address me because I have this title. From the moment we shake hands for the first time, I will be Larry forever.' Which was nice, it's wonderful - but you think about the necessity to send that letter. You know, I'm Sir Michael Caine and I can't imagine when I started doing (the 2007 remake) Sleuth with Jude Law, sending him a letter saying, 'You may be wondering how to address me, you may call me Michael.' It's amazing."
And the 76 year old will always be grateful to Olivier, who passed away in 1989, for believing in his acting ability.
Caine adds, "We did a scene, Larry and I, basically I had the main part in it. He goes to shoot me and I burst into tears begging him not to kill me on the stairs in Sleuth. When the director said cut, he (Olivier) looked at me and said, 'I thought I had an assistant. I see I have a partner.' That was the greatest compliment ever paid to me as an actor. That was his thinking, because he was the greatest actor we had." »

After nearly two years, we'll finally get to see Heath Ledger's final performance in Terry Gilliam's Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus on December 25th. To fill the role left incomplete following Ledger's death, Gilliam hired - as you know by now - Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell, and Jude Law, this giving Law two films opening on the same day (along with Sherlock Holmes).
There's a new set of Korean posters for Parnassus from Imp Awards, and while I would think Gilliam's films in general play better in Europe than they do here, I don't know if that would hold true in Asian countries. Incidentally, the movie's already made $12 million in Europe, about half of that in Italy. But clearly, we're not seeing a slew of character posters in the Us, so this might be a much bigger deal in South Korea.
In addition to Ledger and his three replacements, »

Check out new korean posters for the upcoming film "The Imaginarium Of Doctor Parnassus" starring Heath Ledger, Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell, and Jude Law. It tells the story of Dr Parnassus and his extraordinary 'Imaginarium', a travelling show where members of the audience get an irresistible opportunity to choose between light and joy or darkness and gloom. Blessed with the extraordinary gift of guiding the imaginations of others, Dr Parnassus is cursed with a dark secret. Long ago he made a bet with the devil, Mr Nick, in which he won immortality. Second trailer for this 3D animated comedy, and this time it's focusing on arch villain Gru (voiced by Steve Carell) trying to break into the headquarters of a rival bad guy. This looks like fun and the bit with the shark had me howling. Check it out on July 9.
A second trailer for the new Holmes fllck with Robert Downey Jr. in the title role aided by Jude Law as Watson. Pretty sure this will have awesome written all over it. Plan a trip to Baker Street for Christmas day.
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time
There's some serious spectacle at work here. Jake Gyllenhaal stars in this adaptation of a video game I've never played, but I'm pretty sure that's not necessary. It seems tailor-made to be a summer blockbuster, which is good because it comes out on May 28.

This week saw the too-rapid close of the Neil Simon revival Brighton Beach Memoirs on Broadway, as well as the opening of three Off Broadway productions: The Understudy, starring Justin Kirk, Julie White, and Mark-Paul Gosselaar (at left); Idiot Savant with Willem Dafoe; and Nightingale with Lynn Redgrave. Melissa Bernardo gave a B+ to The Understudy but dinged it for the cast's somewhat mixed on-stage chemistry. Thom Geier calls Idiot Savant "one strange, head-scratching evening" and gives it a C+. As for Lynn Redgrave's one-woman show, Nightingale, I gave it a C and took issue with the production because »

Jamie Hince sported a sling on his arm yesterday while getting lunch in London with Kate Moss. He didn't appear injured during their weekend getaway in Italy, but he's already handling the situation like a pro and even tried to hold the door for Kate. Their meal was adults only, but mom Kate always knows how to keep a young audience entertained. She attended Jude Law and Sadie Frost's daughter Iris's birthday party earlier this week and taught the kids how to strut like a model. View 2 Photos › »

Rollicking fight scenes. Sexual innuendo. Witty repartee. Mystery. The new trailer for Sherlock Holmes has it all. In the upcoming flick, directed Guy Ritchie, Robert Downey Jr. plays Holmes as a brilliant, feisty - and ripped - detective on a mission to save England from his nemesis played by Mark Strong. "Tomorrow, the world as you know it … will end," says a foreboding voice over from Strong. "Well, there isn't any time to waste then," quips Holmes before leaping out a window. Together, Holmes and his loyal colleague Watson (Jude Law) embark on a wild ride to thwart the evil plan. »

I sort of called it! Okay, maybe not exactly, but I did point out that Warner Bros. owed us at least a new trailer for Sherlock Holmes, considering that the two before it were damn near identical. As if listening to my request, a new trailer arrived within 24 hours.
Trailer: Sherlock Holmes
And I do love the new trailer for Sherlock Holmes. More action. More shenanigans. More laughs. Everything looks terrifically fun, and Jude Law looks to steal a multitude of scenes. The preview also gives a lot more attention to the film's villain played by Mark Strong. All in all, very nice. »

These Sherlock Holmes trailers just keep on coming, don’t they? An action-packed fourth one has appeared online over at MTV, and we have it here for your viewing pleasure. We’ve seen plenty of action in all the other trailers for the movie – including explosions, chases and hand-to-hand combat – but this latest trailer really turns up the action significantly.
Just as a reminder, Sherlock Holmes stars Robert Downey Jr. as the titular detective, and it co-stars Jude Law as his faithful assistant, Dr. Watson. Mark Strong plays the villain, Lord Blackwood and Rachel McAdams is the beautiful love interest, Irene Adler. Directed by Guy Ritchie (Snatch, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels), this fresh take on the classic detective character makes use of some things not seen in most Holmes tellings, namely his often-forgotten martial arts skills.
And now here’s the latest Sherlock Holmes trailer, courtesy of Trailer »

The newest Sherlock Holmes trailer is out, and boy is it muscular and sassy! Generally, those are two great tastes that taste great together: It's not hugely different than the other trailers we've already seen, but at least it mercifully excludes the truly terrible tagline "Holmes for the holiday," which makes me want to cry (in a bad way). I'm usually on Team Deductive Reasoning and not Team Blow Stuff Up, but between the always-alluring Robert Downey, Jr., the very pretty Jude Law, the under-appreciated Rachel McAdams, and lots of flirtatious banter, this movie might suck me in. How about you, »

- - - I've been reading a couple of movie blogs and finding out what's their take on the latest Sherlock Holmes trailer. One of the most intriguing just got to be Movieline's post, which I'm quoting below:
It's been a long, interesting ride for the Sherlock Holmes promotional campaign, which began with a shot of Robert Downey Jr stripped to the waist and now finishes with a final trailer full of homoerotic banter. "This is not your father's Sherlock Holmes!" the trailer cries. "Did your father's Sherlock Holmes flirt with Watson all day? Did he sublimate his sexual urges for Jude Law into a simultaneous, side-by-side orgasm of gunfire? [ read more ]
Other blogs are not as provocative as Movieline's take on the latest trailer. Total Film simply took note of the additional scenes and the music, saying: There are a few more story fragments and a snippet or two of fresh footage, »
