Crashville: The Risky Route To Oscar Glory

6 November 2009 10:00 PM, PST | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

In March 2006 the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences sprung one of its annual surprises by awarding the best picture Oscar to Crash, rather than Ang Lee’s acclaimed gay cowboy drama, Brokeback Mountain. At the time it looked as though racism and multiple vehicular pile-ups had trumped homosexuality in the battle of the “hot button” issue movies. But perhaps the Academy was belatedly acknowledging the kind of ambitious, densely plotted, multi-character dramas made famous by the great Robert Altman. From 1975’s Nashville, to Short Cuts, Prêt à Porter and his 2006 swansong A Prairie Home Companion, Altman allowed audiences to immerse themselves in the cinematic equivalent of a book of short stories. Writer Alissa Quart has characterised these films with multiple intersecting plotlines as “hyperlink movies”, in which, “information, character, and action co-exist without hierarchy”. Now I’m a fan of Altman and I loved Paul Thomas Anderson’s, »

Daniel Day-Lewis leaves the ladies swooning in 'Nine' (IrishCentral)

4 November 2009 9:02 AM, PST | IrishCentral | See recent IrishCentral news »

Daniel Day-Lewis looks like he’s enjoying his leading male role in the upcoming film “Nine,” and what red-blooded male could blame him? The double Oscar winner is surrounded by fellow Academy honorees Penelope Cruz and Marion Cotillard in this still from the hotly anticipated new musical "Nine," based on the Broadway show of the same name that scooped five Tony Awards back in 1982. Ddl, the only male star in the film, portrays a world famous film director in the 60s who has a professional and personal midlife crisis as he approaches his 40th birthday. And he’s surrounded by a phalanx of women, including a wife, mistress, muse, confidant and other assorted hangers-on. The film is directed by Rob Marshall, who helmed the film version of the musical “Chicago” a few years back. You’ll remember that “Chicago” was an Oscar darling, winning a Best Picture Oscar among other nods, »

Matthew Modine: Better Angels

By

Alex Simon

Matthew Modine has been something of an iconoclast most of his working life. After being groomed for ‘80s teen idol status in early films such as Private School and Vision Quest, Modine was also one of the first actors of his generation, along with Sean Penn, to take on riskier projects, such as Robert Altman's Streamers, Alan Parker’s Birdy, Gillian Armstrong’s Mrs. Soffel, and Alan J. Pakula’s Orphans. It was his lead role as the cynical Marine Private Joker in Stanley Kubrick’s Vietnam epic Full Metal Jacket that put Modine into the pantheon of young actors who were more than just pretty faces and knowing winks at the camera. This, after all, was the young man who turned down the lead in Top Gun, arguably the prototypical ‘80s blockbuster, due to its cold war politics. From the beginning, »

Fergie performed songs from her 2006 solo album, The Duchess, at the Avon Foundation for Women Awards Gala in New York City on Tuesday night, but she doesn't have plans to work on new solo music anytime soon. She's still riding high on the success of the Black Eyed Peas latest release, The E.N.D., and the group's touring schedule is keeping her busy these days.

She wasn't too busy, however, to attend the gala to show her support for women who are fighting breast cancer and to help end domestic violence. "I'm performing my own songs, not Peas songs, 'cause I don't have the boys with me today," she told MTV News on the red carpet about »

Behind the Scenes of Rob Marshall’s ‘Nine’

22 October 2009 11:00 AM, PDT | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

As you may know, this Rob Marshall directed film is loosely based on Fellini’s 8 1/2. It tells the musical story of film director Guido Contini (Daniel Day-Lewis) who’s facing a mid-life crisis. As he struggles to complete his latest film he examines his career, his life and the relationships with the various women in it.

If the quality of a film can be judged by the quality of its behind the scenes featurette, then I can safely say that Rob Marshall’s Nine is going to be one heck of a film.  I’ve also included some new pics from the film as well which further illustrate just how great this movie is going to look.

Put all that together with the stellar cast and Marshall’s unquestioned ability to execute terrific musicals and Nine looks to have all the making of a hit. Be sure to check out »

Rehearsal Montage From 'Nine' Debuts

20 October 2009 1:51 PM, PDT | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

By Wrap Staff

The Weinstein Company has released a montage of so-called rehearsal footage from the upcoming musical "Nine." Billing aside, the dancing from the film's female-centric cast seems pretty polished. There are no shots of stars Kate Hudson, Penelope Cruz, Sophia Loren, Nicole Kidman, or Marion Cotillard making so much as one wrong step. Perhaps the studio is just saving that for the outtakes section of the DVD.

Nine Rehearsal Footage

20 October 2009 4:23 AM, PDT | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

Yahoo / The Weinstein Company have debuted a great little behind the scenes look at Rob Marshall’s ‘Nine’. The footage shows Daniel Day-Lewis, Marion Cotillard, Penelope Cruz, Judi Dench, Kate Hudson, Nicole Kidman and Sophia Loren prepare for their song-and-dance numbers. I’ve embedded it below or head over to Yahoo to view in HD.

This movie does look like it’s going to be a real show both in it’s artistic content and in the fact it’s a movie based on the stage. Rob Marshall (Chicago) directs and although I’m not usually a big fan of musicals like this one, it does look excellent.

Check it out at a cinema near you on Christmas Day.

Those fine folks over at Yahoo! Movies have just posted a really rather lovely new video exposing the hard work that went into making Rob Marshall's Nine.

There's not much in the way of dialogue but the new rehearsal montage from the Chicago helmer's upcoming musical shows the none-more-starry cast (including the likes of Daniel Day-Lewis, Nicole Kidman, Marion Cotillard, Penélope Cruz, Sophia Loren, Judi Dench, Kate Hudson and The Black Eyed Peas' Fergie) limbering up for what is sure to be a spectacular show.

Take a look at the clip below and let us know what you think in the comments section...

New Nine Rehearsal Montage

20 October 2009 1:15 AM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

A strange beast, this: not quite a trailer, not quite a behind-the-scenes doc. They're calling this sequence of clips from Nine a rehearsal montage, but what it really is is a) cool and b) proof that Penelope Cruz is very, very bendy. Check out the Nine montage over at Yahoo. The film is a musical based on Fellini's 8 1/2, starring every Oscar winner and nominee ever. Daniel Day-Lewis stars as an Italian film director called Guido, facing a midlife crisis that gets him reflecting on his relationships with his wife (Marion Cotillard), mistress (Cruz), confidante (Judi Dench), muse (Nicole Kidman), mother (Sophia Loren), a whore he met in his youth (Stacey "Fergie" Ferguson) and a journalist who comes to interview him (Kate Hudson).Nine is out on Christmas Day here, and we'll be spending most of the intervening period wondering why we don't get outfits like Hudson's when we go to do interviews. »

Japanese Poster for Rob Marshall’s ‘Nine’

19 October 2009 1:07 PM, PDT | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

Here’s the Japanese poster from upcoming musical, directed by Rob Marshall. I’ve said it before but I’ll say it again, the cast is simply astounding and includes Daniel Day-Lewis, Marion Cotillard, Penelope Cruz, Judi Dench, Kate Hudson, Nicole Kidman and Sophia Loren. Between them they’ve been nominated for 17 Academy Awards with 7 Awards being won. It’s nice to see a poster with an image that hasn’t been rehashed fro images that we’ve already seen. As far as I’m aware, it’s the first time it’s been released.

I’ve previously posted the trailer and images for the movie which hits UK cinemas 25th November. Marshall has previously brought us Chicago and is going to direct Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, the fourth in the ‘Pirates’ franchise.
