Akira Toriyama’s journey started as a mangaka rather unconventionally, but going with the flow helped him create one of the greatest shonen series in history. Having taken inspiration from the best, he managed to create his magnum opus. What once was just a one-shot story soon became an epic tale of great battles and even greater power scaling.

Toriyama contributed his very best for the series and thus became a legend forever to be remembered. His work became an inspiration throughout countries. A lot of it came because of the unique character designs that incorporated the ideas of what an action manga like Dragon Ball signified. However, the author was keen on changing one factor.

Akira Toriyama is the one who revolutionized the manga and anime industry. The Dragon Ball franchise set up the path for the Big Three to gain worldwide popularity and become a pillar of the business. Every hardcore anime fan knows that Dragon Ball was inspired by Kung Fu. Akira Toriyama even based one of the characters on Jackie Chan.
The mangaka was a massive fan of Kung-Fu. His magnum opus is a big proof of him being a martial arts fan. Apart from Jackie Chan, there is another famous martial artist who inspired Toriyama sensei.
His paralyzing gaze was shown through Goku while he was on planet Namek. The mentioned martial artist is none other than Bruce Lee. The Kung-Fu star was always with Akira Toriyama in his thoughts and soul.

Having grown up in a religious family, Christian movie night was something that happened a lot more often than I care to admit. However, back when I was a teenager, my parents showed up one night with an unusually cool-looking DVD of a movie that had been recommended to them by a church leader. Curious to see what new kind of evangelical propaganda my parents had rented this time, I proceeded to watch the film with them expecting a heavy-handed snoozefest.
To my surprise, I was a few minutes in when Denzel Washington proceeded to dismember a band of cannibal raiders when I realized that this was in fact a real movie. My mom was horrified by the flick’s extreme violence and dark subject matter, but I instantly became a fan of the Hughes Brothers’ faith-based 2010 thriller, The Book of Eli. During his early career, Danny Chan Kwok Kwan, actor and Jeet Kune Do practitioner portrayed Bruce Lee in the 50-episode TV series “The Legend of Bruce Lee” (2008) due to his resemblance to him. After his portrayal of the Bruce Lee look-alike goalkeeper in Stephen Chow's “Shaolin Soccer” he became more popular which led him to further playing Lee in the “Ip Man” film series. However, in “Desperado” or “Thug in a Suit” as translated from its Chinese title, he finally has the chance to shine as a leading man.
Set in Taicheng, a made up city somewhere in Southeast Asia, most likely Thailand or Cambodia, this online iQIYI film kicks off with a great action set piece in which the thug in a suit, Zhao Ke, comes to a butchery warehouse alone to rescue his sworn brother Barno. The warehouse is actually a front for drug smuggling and a trap to lure him in.

Back in 1999, Joshua Leonard made his acting debut in the now-iconic found-footage film “The Blair Witch Project.” In the last 25 years he’s directed five of his own films and starred in dozens of others, but is still fighting to be taken seriously in Hollywood.
At last week’s CinemaCon, Lionsgate and Blumhouse announced the development of a”The Blair Witch Project” reboot. Leonard’s face was on the press release — but in an April 12 social media post, he said he knew nothing about the project.

How do you survive when the two most important men in your life die at a tragically young age? The daughter of martial arts hero Bruce Lee describes what kept her going – and how she is preserving the family legacy
Shannon Lee is cheerfully recounting the time she went to a darkness retreat in Oregon. For four days, she stayed in an underground cabin in the woods, so dark she couldn’t see her own hands. Most people would find this terrifying. But for Lee, it was liberating, she says. “All you have are your thoughts and feelings, and they start to bubble up. So you get to look at a lot of things and it can be uncomfortable. I came out very energised.”

Bill Skarsgård has become undead bloodsucker Count Orlok for the big screen.
Skarsgård leads Robert Eggers’ long-awaited “Nosferatu,” a reimagining of F. W. Murnau’s 1922 film. Skarsgård plays the titular villain, with Lily-Rose Depp as Ellen Hutter, the source of Orlok’s obsession. As Orlok tries to seduce her soul, Ellen’s husband Thomas Hutter (Nicholas Hoult) fights to save his wife from turning to the dark side.
Focus Features chairman Peter Kujawski said the film “definitely ain’t your father’s ‘Nosferatu,’ and [Eggers] will definitely bring new meaning to the phrase ‘Christmas feast.’”
The footage Focus premiered at CinemaCon (though not released online today) was as daring and intense as any film Eggers has made, complete with some chilling black and white sequences, a man biting the head off a pigeon, streets teeming with rats, and rooms engulfed in flames, not to mention a truly deafening, bone chilling score.

For many around the world, there’s one name at the top of the action totem pole: Jackie Chan, and today marks his 70th birthday.
If you only know him as a goofy martial arts comedian from the Rush Hour and Shanghai Noon series, then consider this a wake up call. Because when Jackie did things His way on his home turf, he churned out some of the best action movies you’ll ever see.
Many would point to Drunken Master II as Jackie’s magnum opus. Fair enough, that is an all-timer, but for an example of his best modern day martial arts action, mixed in with some crime drama and his signature comedy, one of his absolute best outings is 1985’s Police Story.

All Dev Patel knew was: The man was wearing a rubber monkey mask. Past that, everything else was a mystery.
The 33-year-old actor had this image stuck in his head. There’s a young man, sweaty and battered, standing in a crude wrestling ring located in what Patel excitedly describes as “the armpit of India.” There’s a crowd there, already whipped into a frenzy. They’re screaming, howling insults, throwing garbage at the fighter. He seems unfazed by all of it. Then the figure pulls out that simian mask,...

Move over John Wick, there’s a new martial arts action hero: Dev Patel’s titular underdog in his directorial debut, “Monkey Man.” Inspired by the ancient legend of the Hindu deity Hanuman, the invincible Monkey God, Patel creates his own mythic avenging angel in the tradition of such Korean action films as “Oldboy” and “Man From Nowhere.” Lowly yet scrappy and full of rage, Patel’s Kid is determined to take down the sinister elite of the fictional Yatana, Mumbai’s version of Gotham, and kill the corrupt cop, Rana (Sikandar Kher), who brutally murdered his mother and scarred him for life.
Patel (a martial arts competitor and teacher in London in the early 2000s with a passion for the film genre), trained rigorously with fight coordinator Brahim Chab (“The Foreigner”) and performed all the fights himself. Although he embraced Chab’s intricate choreography, he also...

The bridge between Indian and American action cinema has unfortunately yet to be built. There are throughlines between the two industries, that's for sure; recently, Siddharth Anand's “Fighter” borrowed the luscious aesthetics and jingoistic tone of the “Top Gun” franchise, and the work of Lokesh Kanagaraj wouldn't quite be the way it is without his trusty, robust list of North American favorites. But there has yet to be a film that solidly unifies the nations with an equal balance of what makes each industries' take on high-octane thrills so heady. That is perhaps until now, with Dev Patel's American-produced, Mumbai-set one-man-army action-extravaganza “Monkey Man” that pounds its chest onto screens around the world with unparalleled levels of energy, swagger and savagery.

This article contains massive spoilers for "Monkey Man."
The medium of cinema is brilliantly, endlessly malleable. It's an art form able to communicate so many perspectives, stories, emotions and the like, yet there are some genres that feel especially inherent to the medium. Action is undeniably one of these; even the most basic, average action movie combines elements of sound, cinematography, actors giving performances that are equal parts physical and vocal, music, choreography and more. In other words, it takes every element available to the filmmaker to construct a convincing, engaging action sequence, something that can't be exactly replicated in, say, a song, picture, or painting.
Perhaps this is one reason why so many action films dabble in myth: the very construction of an action film requires the establishment of a hyper-reality, so it follows that larger-than-life themes, tropes, and traditions would fit inside such a world. This is a...

Chuck Norris is known for his roundhouse kicks and his action star persona in the ‘80s and the ‘90s. He starred in films such as Good Guys Wear Black, Breaker! Breaker!, and The Octagon. Though he did not reach the level of other action stars of the era such as Arnold Schwarzenegger, he still held his ground. The actor was known for being proficient in martial arts and was also known to have trained many celebrities in martial arts before he became an actor.
Norris made his big screen debut with Bruce Lee’s The Way of The Dragon. The action star has a minor role as Colt, who is recruited by the antagonist to fight against Lee’s Tang Lung. Norris and Lee reportedly developed a friendship when they met at the All-American-Karate Championship tournament, where the Silent Rage star was a two-time world champion.

Ang Lee is moving on from 3D filmmaking after a trio of hit or miss releases: “Life of Pi” (2012), “Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk” (2016) and “Gemini Man” (2019). The former title was an acclaimed blockbuster that won Lee the Oscar for best director, while the latter two releases, also distributing in high-frame rate at 120 frames per second, were mostly critical misfires and big financial disappointments. Lee hasn’t made a movie since “Gemini Man.”
“I tried higher frame rate and I tried 3D,” Lee recently told IndieWire. “I tried new ways of making movies. Those pictures are really sharp. That’s a lot of pressure. Everything is difficult, so that is always a great pressure. I cannot get into detail on how to make those movies. People have not tried even one minute of that scale. I did two feature films. Back when there was a legitimate attempt to resurrect the 3D format, Ang Lee was at the forefront, beginning with 2012’s Life of Pi. But after failures in 2016’s Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk and 2019’s Gemini Man — neither of which needed to be in 3D or shot in 120 fps — Lee will go back to more basic ways of storytelling with his Bruce Lee biopic.
As Ang Lee told IndieWire, “It’s too hard, especially after the two movies. The 3D is just too hard. I’ll go back to the regular way, the old way of making movies. There’s a great story to be told, a lot to explore. I’m still working on it. But it won’t be in 3D.”
Ang Lee’s problems with 3D and reasons for stepping away from it are multi, saying, “In general, not only my two movies, 3D in general …[is] so bad.

Ang Lee is hoping to make progress on his planned Bruce Lee biopic. The 'Brokeback Mountain' director is set to helm a new film about the martial arts legend – with his own actor son Mason Lee in the lead role – and wants to get started on the project in the near future after taking many years to "connect" to the story.Ang told Variety: "It took me years to think of a way to crack it, to connect to it. It’s been the better part of five years since Ang Lee’s last feature, Gemini Man, which you might not realize because even––especially––its biggest champions will tell you it’s best-watched in theaters, a tough deal owing to the director’s use of 3D and high-frame-rate images. Whatever amazement it engendered couldn’t fight against public distaste both formats face (to say nothing of middling reviews and meager buzz) and we’re essentially guaranteed Lee won’t return to either, making it and Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk a curious one-two in his strange career.
Speaking to Indiewire, Lee described his intents in notably strong terms: “I tried new ways of making movies. […] People have not tried even one minute of that scale. I did two feature films.” Though he’s often seemed a humble figure, one can sense real frustration with those who couldn’t...

Ang Lee broke ground on films like “Gemini Man” and “Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk,” developing new camera systems to experiment with de-aging and high-frame rates in 3D. But as the old adage goes, you’re only as good as your last picture, and in the case of the Oscar-winning “Brokeback Mountain” director, he hasn’t released a new movie since 2019’s “Gemini Man” bombed at the box office. As did “Billy Lynn,” a movie that could only be shown properly in a small handful of screens, before it underperformed in 2016.

Once upon a time there was a film industry that wasn't dominated by the comic book behemoths of D.C. and Marvel. Where a comic book style movie felt fresh, innovative and where the Hong Kong production line hadn't been stripped bare in the service of mainland blockbusters with a patriotic core. “Black Mask” in many respects is a last hurrah of an industry about to go through immense change. As Eureka Entertainment bring it to blu-ray, it's time to revisit this Frankenstein's monster of a collaborative effort between several unique talents.

The year 2024 may be one of those years when the film industry is offering us some of the most hyped and exciting films in a while. But the upcoming Monkey Man, which stars Oscar Award-nominated actor Dev Patel, has been by far one of the most highly-anticipated films of the year.
In fact, since the trailer of the star’s upcoming directorial debut dropped, fans have been comparing the movie to that of films from the John Wick franchise, which in itself is a huge achievement.
A still from Monkey Man
But reaching this milestone was not an easy task by a very long shot, especially when the film was on the brink of being thrown into the trashcan. Recently, Patel revealed that the producers of the film were almost pulling out at the last second, which made him improvise and use crew members as extras while reusing several props on set.

Though it’s easy to get caught up in fruitless debates over genre classifications, genres are a fascinating part of any medium’s evolution. Yes, they sometimes oversimplify complex works for the purposes of classification. However, a deeper look at the origins of those genres often reveals fascinating facts about the evolution of art and entertainment.
That’s especially true of gaming. Many of us have been alive for most of the notable history of video games. Yet, it’s still remarkably easy to forget how some of the more unique and prevalent video game genres actually began.
Today, we’re going to take a look at the birth of some of those genres. Some were clearly created by the release of a revolutionary new title, while others can trace their origins to games that took an existing concept in a new direction. Some are world-famous, while others have been...

Jackie Chan has made a lot of successful movies both in his homeland and in the international arena. With the hundreds of projects under his belt, some were not well-received by the audience. One of the action star’s most popular Hollywood films is Disney’s Around the World in 80 Days.
Around the World in 80 Days (2004)
It was helmed as a reboot of the highly acclaimed 1956 version and an adaptation of Jules Verne’s 1873 novel. Apart from Chan, the film starred Steve Coogan and Cecile de France.
Around the World in 80 Days Was A Gigantic Mess
While the title sounds really exciting, Around the World in 80 Days was a critical and commercial flop. It only earned over $72 million worldwide against a production budget of $110 million, which means it lost a profit of at least $38 million. ‘Star Wars: The Acolyte’ Creator Leslye Headland Talks the Unique Perspective of Her Upcoming Series
Star Wars: The Acolyte creator Leslye Headland is currently putting the finishing touches on a four-year journey that started with Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy buying her overall series pitch in the room. At the time, her hook was “Frozen meets Kill Bill,” and now the first trailer provides a few more of the puzzle pieces. Set a century before Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, Amandla Stenberg’s mysterious character appears to be hunting Jedi during a time of peace near the end of the High Republic era.
The trailer kicks off with Lee Jung-jae’s Jedi Master urging a group of Padawans to not trust their own deceitful eyes, and perhaps the same can be said of the trailer and the series’ overall narrative. The show will be taking a page out of Rashomon’s playbook, exploring different perspectives on the same events.

Original “The Crow” filmmaker Alex Proyas is voicing his feelings about the cult film’s long-gestating remake, helmed by Rupert Sanders. Proyas directed the 1994 original film based on the graphic novel about a man who returns from the dead to take revenge on the person who murdered him and his fiancée.
Twenty-eight year old actor Brandon Lee, the son of martial artist Bruce Lee, was killed on set during the final days of production when a prop gun fired during the making of Proyas’ film. Now, after various attempts at remakes over the past 30 years, “The Crow” is being rebooted with Bill Skarsgård playing the role of Eric Draven, as originated by Lee.
Proyas took to Facebook to share his reaction to the trailer for the upcoming Lionsgate feature, set for a June 7 release. (You can also see his posts below.)
