Evil Dead (2013)
Five friends head to a remote cabin, where the discovery of a Book of the Dead leads them to unwittingly summon up demons living in the nearby woods. The evil presence possesses them until only one is left to fight for survival.
Director:Fede Alvarez |
|
| Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Yes, it's a touchy situation, to discuss this particular remake, which was being developed as Sam Raimi's Spider-Man legacy was rebooted. The announcement that Diablo Cody would co-author the screenplay yielded divided fans even further, even though Jennifer's Body will one day earn its due status as a cult classic. Loving the notion of an addled female protagonist, by the way, and star Jane Levy is great on "Suburgatory". Fede Alvarez earned the director's chair after his short Panic Attack! became a viral sensation.
Jurassic Park (1993) - [3D re-release]
During a preview tour, a theme park suffers a major power breakdown that allows its cloned dinosaur exhibits to run amok.
Director:Steven Spielberg |
|
| Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Even if the long-planned fourth installment doesn't arrive for Summer 2014 (though Rise of the Planet of the Apes' writers are currently working on the project), Dr. Alan Grant, his crew, and those dinosaurs who now look so dated will get the 3D overhaul/cash-grab. It would be cool to take kids to see this for their first time.
Trance (2013) - [Limited]
An art auctioneer who has become mixed up with a group of criminals partners with a hypnotherapist in order to recover a lost painting.
Director:Danny Boyle |
|
| Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: One reason to celebrate ahead of time: Danny Boyle's new work finds him reuniting with John Hodge, who wrote Shallow Grave and Trainspotting (and, yes, A Life Less Ordinary and The Beach). We're excited to see Boyle back in a world where things are dangerous and seductive.
The Company You Keep (2012) - [Limited]
A thriller centered on a former Weather Underground activist who goes on the run from a journalist who has discovered his identity.
Director:Robert Redford |
|
| Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: The trailer for Robert Redford's latest feels like a montage of Best Picture Oscar moments, and it showcases a stacked roster of some seriously most-wanted performers. Of Shia LaBeouf's recent work, this is the performance that has received the least press -- only because he wasn't intimidating his female co-star (Lawless), dropping acid (The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman), or having sex on camera (Nymphomaniac).
Simon Killer (2012) - [Limited]
A recent college graduate flees to Paris after a break-up, where his involvement with a prostitute begins to reveal a potentially dark recent past.
Director:Antonio Campos |
|
| Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Antonio Campos's follow-up to Afterschool was inspired in part by the work of writer Georges Simenon, and the director developed the script with his two leads, Brady Corbet and Mati Diop. We understand the overall story is more of a character/mood piece than a thriller undulating with the potential for violence. Definitely intrigued here.
Upstream Color (2013) - [Limited]
A man and woman are drawn together, entangled in the life cycle of an ageless organism. Identity becomes an illusion as they struggle to assemble the loose fragments of wrecked lives.
Director:Shane Carruth |
|
| Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Shane Carruth self distributes his second film, a follow-up to the treasured sci-fi mind-boggler, Primer. Carruth's candid talk about the current state of independent filmmaking and distribution is very worthwhile reading.
No Place on Earth (2012) - [Limited]
A cave exploration in the Ukraine leads to the unearthing of a story of World War II survivors who once found shelter in the same cave.
Director:Janet Tobias |
|
| Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Take a true story from WWII, document parts of it and re-enact others, give it a Herzog-y otherworldliness, and prepare for what could be one of the most surprising documentaries of the year.
Free Angela & All Political Prisoners (2012) - [Limited]- Documentary
A documentary that chronicles the life of young college professor Angela Davis, and how her social activism implicates her in a botched kidnapping attempt that ends with a shootout, four dead, and her name on the FBI's 10 most wanted list.
Director:Shola Lynch |
|
| Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Director and intermittent "Seasame Street" actress Shola Lynch hasn't made a feature documentary since 2004's Chisholm '72: Unbought & Unbossed, and knowing she's back in fighting-female mode with a profile on the heroic and poetic Angela Davis has us primed for what might be the most definitive work on Davis to date -- though The Black Power Mixtape 1967-1975 did her justice, too.
The Brass Teapot (2012) - [Limited]
When a couple discovers that a brass teapot makes them money whenever they hurt themselves, they must come to terms with how far they are willing to go.
Director:Ramaa Mosley |
|
| Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Partially credit (or blame) "Girls" for the abundance of stories about young people facing an all-too-bleak professional/economic climate, though we say angst and questionable morals/behavior are more fun to watch than twentysomething ennui. Hopefully Ramma Mosley's morality tale has a narrative worthy of its formidable cast.
Eddie: The Sleepwalking Cannibal (2012) - [Limited]- Comedy | Horror
A painter struggling for inspiration finds an unexpected muse after he accepts a teaching position in a small town and becomes the caregiver to Eddie, a seemingly docile art student with a rare sleepwalking condition.
Director:Boris Rodriguez |
|
| Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Boris Rodriguez's horror-comedy might not be on the general movie-goer's radar, but the oddball premise, presence of leading man Thure Lindhardt, and reunion of Pontypool stars Georgina Reilly and Stephen McHattie might push this into can't-miss territory for more than just genre fans.
Shelter (2010) - [Limited]
A female forensic psychiatrist discovers that all of one of her patient's multiple personalities are murder victims. She will have to find out what's happening before her time is finished.

The Buzz: Despite the Moore-Meyers appeal, we understand this is a standard genre exercise that over-relies on creepy visuals (i.e. the way Meyers snaps his neck around in the trailer) and jarring sound design in order to provoke its audience. And if you thought this release came and went already, you aren't alone; in the U.S. the movie has sat on the shelf while it's been available everywhere else. In the interim, directing duo Måns Mårlind and Björn Stein's Underworld entry raised their profile slightly.
