The Buzz: Rihanna shooting heavy artillery. It's the sort of absurdity we expect from this level of blockbuster, right? That and a theme song by Aerosmith. The pressure on Universal to make this picture under the terms of their deal with Hasbro has been obsessively tracked by industry watchers as the studio wriggled out of its deal to turn a handful of games into movies. These Naval officers lit up the international box office in advance of the US release, laying waste to alien forces to the tune of $170 million through April.
What to Expect When You're Expecting (2012)
A look at love through the eyes of five interconnected couples experiencing the thrills and surprises of having a baby, and ultimately coming to understand the universal truth that no matter what you plan for, life doesn't always deliver what's expected.
Director:Kirk Jones |

The Buzz: So it looks like the New Year's Eve/Valentine's Day formula is being applied to other movie genres ... and you cannot keep Jennifer Lopez away from this sort of starring role. The saving graces for those of us dragged to the theater by our lovers? Amiable director Kirk Jones (Waking Ned Devine) and screenwriter Shauna Cross (Whip It).
The Dictator (2012)
The heroic story of a dictator who risks his life to ensure that democracy would never come to the country he so lovingly oppressed.
Director:Larry Charles |

The Buzz: On paper, Sacha Baron Cohen's first non-"Ali G. Show" creation reads better than Borat and Brüno combined. I like that there's no prior character map, no set expectation for Cohen to surpass except, well, the sophomore slump that was, arguably, his foray into the world of international fashion.
Hysteria (2011)
The truth of how Mortimer Granville devised the invention of the first vibrator in the name of medical science.
Director:Tanya Wexler |
|
| Watch Trailer Get Showtimes |
The Buzz: Nothing like a period sex comedy to remind us how uptight we can be about the subject. Tanya Wexler's stagey production should play well with older audiences looking for a blushing thrill. Hard to believe this marks ten years since Secretary for Maggie G.
Elena (2011) - [5/16 -- NYC]
When a sudden illness and an unexpected reunion threaten dutiful housewife Elena's potential inheritance, she must hatch a desperate plan ...
Director:Andrei Zvyagintsev |
|
| Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: For those of us who were entranced by The Return, Andrei Zvyagintsev's first film -- a family drama with a haunting true-life legacy -- Zvyagintsev's follow-up, The Banishment, was a bloated epic that didn't survive the festival circuit, was one of those bummers that left you thinking maybe the guy only had one good film in him. From nearly every review of Elena, it seems as though the director has resurfaced in spectacular fashion with a neo-noir that should thrill fans of slower-paced cinema.
Beyond the Black Rainbow (2010) - [limited]
Despite being under heavy sedation, Elena tries to make her way out of Arboria, a secluded, quasi-futuristic commune.
Director:Panos Cosmatos |
|
| Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Part science fiction, part art object, part Wallpaper magazine spread - Panos Cosmatos's first film could be the most curious release of the year. Like, have you watched the trailer?
Polisse (2011) - [limited]
A journalist covering police assigned to a juvenile division enters an affair with one of her subjects.
Director:Maïwenn |
|
| Watch Trailer Get Showtimes |
The Buzz: Maïwenn's entertainment career is a curious one: discovered by Alexandre Aja on the stand-up comedy circuit in France, barely surviving Aja's High Tension, and then getting behind the camera to direct. Polisse, her third film, has garnered the most acclaim despite a general acknowledgment that it runs long and perhaps is a bit too soap operatic, so gauge your mood accordingly.
Virginia (2010) - [limited]
A sheriff sees his state senate bid slide out onto the ice when his daughter begins to date the son of a charming but psychologically disturbed woman with whom the sheriff has engaged in a two-decade-long affair.
Director:Dustin Lance Black |
|
| Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: For all the good that Dustin Lance Black has offered up -- his Oscar-winning screenplay for Milk, his political activism, his eloquent handling of a certain tabloid scandal -- this movie, formerly known as What's Wrong with Virginia was eviscerated by critics upon its late-2010 festival release. No word if any changes or edits have been made aside from the shortened title, though I've heard from more than one critic that Jennifer Connelly's performance survives the uneven writing and messy direction. That said, the film also has its fair share of public defenders, so maybe Virginia is this year's Margaret?
Mansome (2012) - [limited]
A documentary that explores the question: In the age of manscaping, metrosexuals, and grooming products galore - what does it mean to be a man?
Director:Morgan Spurlock |
|
| Watch Trailer Get Showtimes |
The Buzz: Given Morgan Spurlock's penchant for the fu-manchu mustache, it's pretty natural for him to make a documentary exploring the subject of manliness in a time where sporting a flowing beard is as common as, say it with me, anal bleaching. But even with Jason Bateman and Will Arnett riffing on these subjects and more, when you consider where Spurlock began his career, his current focus on hairy dudes seems somewhat frivolous.
Lovely Molly (2011) - [limited]
Newlywed Molly moves into her deceased father's house in the countryside, where painful memories soon begin to haunt her.
Director:Eduardo Sánchez |
|
| Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: It's not the idea that Elizabeth Olsen has almost cornered the market on freaked-out-lady horror/thrillers, it's the question of whether this sort of fare has any box-office pull anymore, or if its success can only be measured via cable/VOD viewings. It would be fascinating, one hopes, to talk with Molly director Eduardo Sanchez about how he's seen the genre and its release strategies evolve since the time he first found an audience with The Blair Witch Project.
American Animal (2011)- Comedy | Drama
A wild existential comedy about a dying young man who descends into madness when he discovers that his roommate and best friend is leaving for a new job in the morning.
Director:Matt D'Elia |
|
| Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Matt D'Elia's debut seems like indie comedy at its most divisive. Heralded at South by Southwest audiences, reviled by others, it definitely seems like a fearless statement on self-obsession and co-dependence.
