42 (2013)
The life story of Jackie Robinson and his history-making signing with the Brooklyn Dodgers under the guidance of team executive Branch Rickey.
Director:Brian Helgeland |
|
| Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Brian Helgeland excels with serious drama, especially as a screenwriter (L.A. Confidential and Mystic River come to mind), so I am looking forward to what he does with this landmark sports story as its writer/director. Of course it's a huge undertaking for the relatively unknown Chadwick Boseman, and a major casting risk on the studio's part, but that makes us want to root even harder for everyone involved.
Scary Movie 5 (2013)
A couple begin to experience some unusual activity after bringing their newborn son home from the hospital. With the help of home-surveillance cameras and a team of experts, they learn they're being stalked by a nefarious demon.
Director:Malcolm D. Lee |
|
| Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Development on this project dates back to 2007, a year after Scary Movie 4's worldwide success and the early days of the The Weinstein Company. (Harvey Weinstein and his brother Bob left the Miramax offices on the Disney lot 2005.) Six years is a long time between sequels, and the Black Swan satire feels so aged already, it's no wonder that Anna Faris isn't returning.
To the Wonder (2012)
After visiting Mont Saint-Michel, Marina and Neil come to Oklahoma, where problems arise. Marina meets a priest and fellow exile, who is struggling with his vocation, while Neil renews his ties with a childhood friend, Jane.
Director:Terrence Malick |
|
| Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Terrence Malick is one of the least time-bound directors in history, so the short wait for his follow-up to The Tree of Life is worth noting, as is the divisive reception the film received at its Venice premiere last year. But this should come as no surprise given Malick's unconventional approach to, well, everything. The cattiest thing we've ever heard Ben Affleck 2.0 say came at the expense of Malick's on-set direction, which seemed more focused on capturing natural elements than human interactions. The subject matter definitely seems skewed for older audiences only - the same people who now flock to Affleck-as-filmmaker's work.
The Angels' Share (2012)- Comedy | Drama
Narrowly avoiding jail, new dad Robbie vows to turn over a new leaf. A visit to a whisky distillery inspires him and his mates to seek a way out of their hopeless lives.
Director:Ken Loach |
|
| Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: We know that Ken Loach is concerned with art and not commerce -- he and his producer Rebecca O'Brien know how to raise a budget -- but if you're at all intrigued by what a Loach commercial breakthrough might look like, this warmer-hearted comedy could be it, especially if word-of-mouth catches on with older audiences. There's a great story to hear about the real-life reform of lead actor Paul Brannigan.
Disconnect (2012)
A drama centered on a group of people searching for human connections in today's wired world.
Director:Henry Alex Rubin |
|
| Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Murderball director Henry Alex Rubin makes his feature-film debut with this cautionary tale - a Crash for the digital age if you will (and if you want). Fashion-lovers should keep their eyes open for a sleazy appearance by designer Marc Jacobs, who apparently tries to lure young beauties into his online porn empire.
April 19
Oblivion (2013)
A veteran assigned to extract Earth's remaining resources begins to question what he knows about his mission and himself.
Director:Joseph Kosinski |
|
| Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: TRON: Legacy director Joseph Kosinski's newest science-fiction undertaking has been in development for 5+ years, and his hotly anticipated return to the genre doubles as Tom Cruise's only 2013 release. We're most looking forward to how Kosinski has visualized a universe separate from the Kevin Flynn aesthetic. Adding layers to the welcome intrigue is screenwriter William Monahan, best known for turning the very Eastern Infernal Affairs into the Western hit The Departed, and a support cast featuring two Oscar winners, the second hottest guy from "Game of Thrones," a former Bond Girl, and W.E. survivor Andrea Riseborough (who is excellent in the will-it-ever-be-released-in-the-U.S. Shadow Dancer).
The Lords of Salem (2012)
Heidi, a radio DJ, is sent a box containing a record -- a "gift from the Lords." The sounds within the grooves trigger flashbacks of her town's violent past. Is Heidi going mad, or are the Lords back to take revenge on Salem, Massachusetts?
Director:Rob Zombie |
|
| Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: A polarizing Rob Zombie film is not a bad thing, especially when its believers liken it to the work of Kenneth Anger and Roman Polanski. Seems as though Zombie has shifted gears in a way that also aligns with Ti West's pacing with The Innkeepers and The House of the Devil, so people who want more of RZ's cartoon-horror psychedelia might want to pass on his latest. And genre purists who think Zombie is a complete hack based on his prior body of work might be intrigued by the presence of icons Judy Geeson, Pat Quinn, and Dee Wallace playing nefarious relatives.
Dans la maison (2012)
A sixteen-year-old boy insinuates himself into the house of a fellow student from his literature class and writes about it in essays for his French teacher. Faced with this gifted and unusual pupil, the teacher rediscovers his enthusiasm for his work, but the boy's intrusion will unleash a series of uncontrollable events.
Director:François Ozon |
|
| Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: A voyeuristic thriller that features plenty of sex and a peep behind the curtains and under the covers of a seemingly perfect family - seen from the perspective of a young writer who wields a pen and paper instead of a laptop? With Kristin Scott Thomas also observing from the margins? By all appearance, this seems to be one of writer/director François Ozon's art-house breakthroughs.

Pain & Gain (2013)Action | Comedy | Drama | Thriller
A trio of bodybuilders in Florida get caught up in an extortion ring and a kidnapping scheme that goes terribly wrong.
Director:Michael Bay |
|
| Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Our main question would be for Michael Bay, and it would be: when was the last time you directed from an actual-real screenplay? This absurdist premise feels as though it could have sprung out from the Coen Bros. fully formed, but in fact it's a true story adapted by the writing team of Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, who have graduated from the crusty Narnia franchise and retooled themselves as Marvel specialists.
The Big Wedding (2013)
A long-divorced couple fakes being married as their family unites for a wedding.
Director:Justin Zackham |
|
| Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: The Bucket List put writer Justin Zackham on the Hollywood map, and his next to-do is also centered on older adults; this time, Diane Keaton and Robert De Niro, last seen together in Marvin's Room, play the divorced parents who fake a certain level of happiness as their adopted son's wedding approaches. At first consideration, I thought this was some sort of romantic comedy starring Katherine Heigl - a harder sell.
Mud (2012)
Two teenage boys encounter a fugitive and form a pact to help him evade the bounty hunters on his trail and to reunite him with his true love.
Director:Jeff Nichols |
|
| Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Since Matthew McConaughey suddenly is every critic's favor actor, look for his starring role to help make the new film from Jeff Nichols (whose last work, Take Shelter, really caught me on a second viewing) his highest-profile outing yet. We're thoroughly anticipating the boy-adventure and its similarities to David Gordon Green's early work. Hopefully Reese Witherspoon will emerge with some much-needed cool factor, too.
Filly Brown (2012)
A promising hip-hop rhymer from Los Angeles finds herself in a gray area when a record producer offers her a compromising shot at stardom.
|
|
| Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Something tells me a relatively big opening weekend awaits this life-affirming, rhyme-soaked drama for which star Gina Rodriguez has earned strong reviews. It's the kind of story that Pantelion Films -- the distributor that proclaims itself to be the first major Latino studio in Hollywood and has an output deal with Lionsgate -- will know just how to market effectively.
The Reluctant Fundamentalist (2012)
A young Pakistani man is chasing corporate success on Wall Street. He finds himself embroiled in a conflict between his American Dream, a hostage crisis, and the enduring call of his family's homeland.
Director:Mira Nair |
|
| Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: As with The Namesake, here Mira Nair is concerned with the immigrant experience in the United States, though her source material - Mohsin Hamid's intimate novel - concerns a young, single man's life pre- and post-9/11. Riz Ahmed's lead performance has earned praise; reviews of Nair's direction, on the other hand, are middling - with most critics calling into question the decision to turn a character study into a thriller.
At Any Price (2012)
A farming family's business is threatened by an unexpected crisis, further testing the relationship between a father and his rebellious son.
Director:Ramin Bahrani |
|
| Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Part of me get this project in theory: a message movie designed to further advance the second stage of Zac Efron's acting career. The other part of me thinks this looks like Footloose without the fun and the best-selling soundtrack.
