Distinguished American cinematographer Ernest Haller started in the industry in 1914 as an actor with Biograph after leaving his first job as a bank clerk. Within one year he discovered his true calling: being on the other side of the camera. By 1920, he had become a full director of photography and would go on to handle prestigious pictures , such as the Samuel Goldwyn-produced Stella Dallas (1925). In 1926, Haller signed with First National and was still there when the studio was absorbed by Warner Brothers in 1930. Despite prolific output, it took him several years to create a reputation, however his breakthrough eventually came with the lavishly produced period drama Jezebel (1938), starring Bette Davis. For this, he received the first of five Academy Award nominations.
It was his work on 'Jezebel' which ultimately prompted David O. Selznick to replace Lee Garmes (with whom he had creative disagreements) with Haller as principal cinematographer for his Technicolour masterpiece, Gone with the Wind (1939). Haller also shot Vivien Leigh's famous first screen test for the role of Scarlett O'Hara. Though his previous work had been almost exclusively in black-and-white, the gamble paid off handsomely, with Haller winning an Academy Award (alongside Ray Rennahan) for Best Colour Cinematography.
Following 'GWTW' , Haller shot some of the best films made at Warner Brothers during the 1940's, his work perfectly suited to the gritty studio look of its product. He was particularly effective with the strong female stars of the company, Joan Crawford and Bette Davis (shooting 14 of her pictures), meticulously balancing make-up and lighting to bringing out their best features. He created an almost expressionistic mood for films like Mildred Pierce (1945) (for which he received another Oscar nomination) and Humoresque (1946). For the remainder of his career, Haller remained at Warners. Even after his contract expired in 1951, he was recalled for special assignments such as Rebel Without a Cause (1955), shot in CinemaScope, and the psychological drama What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? (1962), reuniting him once more with Davis and Crawford, albeit this time concerned with photographing them in a decidedly unglamorous fashion. He freelanced during the remainder of the 1960's and was semi-retired when asked by James Goldstone to step in as director of photography for the second pilot of Star Trek (1966), "Where No Man Has Gone Before". Ernest Haller was killed in a car crash in October 1970, aged 74.TOS:

Born in Los Angeles on Nov. 15, 1926, Kline, with the help of his dad, landed a job in the camera department at Columbia Pictures after he graduated from high school in 1943. He worked as a slate boy on Cover Girl (1944), starring Rita Hayworth and Gene Kelly. Richard is the fourth member of my family to be a part of the ASC. His father was cinematographer Benjamin H. Kline (Danger Street, Fireside Theatre, dozens of Westerns), and his uncles were, Phil Rosen, co-founded the American Society of Cinematographers in 1919 and served as its first president, and Sol Halperin who also served as president.
Kline assisted and operated on more than 200 motion pictures before becoming a director of photography in 1963, after which he compiled 46 feature credits. He is a product of the Hollywood studio-system heyday of the 1940s, '50s and '60s, an invaluable link to a time when filmmakers could focus almost exclusively on practicing their craft and improving with each picture. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1944, stationed at the Photo Science Laboratory in Washington, D.C., before shipping out to the Pacific theater, where he stayed until mid-1946. After returning to the States, he began working as an assistant at Columbia. His first assignment upon his return became one of his most memorable assisting during the shooting of Orson Welles' The Lady From Shanghai.
As a cinematographer, Kline earned Academy Award nominations for the lavish 1968 musical Camelot and the 1976 remake of the epic King Kong. His other credits include Hang 'em High, The Boston Strangler, The Andromeda Strain, The Mechanic, Soylent Green, Battle for the Planet of the Apes, Mr. Majestyk, The Fury, Who'll Stop the Rain, Star Trek - The Motion Picture, Breathless, Body Heat, All of Me and The Competition.
Based on the hit Broadway musical, Camelot was shot on location in Spain and on expansive sets built on the Warner Bros. lot. The picture would be one of Kline's greatest challenges. The scope was overwhelming at times. Winter forest set, built on Stage 8, was immense required more than 400 10K lamps. However, Kline's reliance on mere candlelight for the film's soft-lit wedding between Arthur (Richard Harris) and Guenevere (Vanessa Redgrave) proved equally tricky, in part because the producers didn't believe real candles would actually read on film,Kline using more than 1,000 candles for the scene. The actors were supposed to walk through darkness, surrounded by all these candles, before kneeling and taking their vows. Employing a team of 30 prop men to simultaneously light the candles, while Kline doubled the wicks' effectiveness by placing mirrors in strategic positions around the set. To add a mystical glow to the proceedings, he placed an 8'x8' pane of glass in front of the camera at a 30-degree angle. Then, behind the camera, he beamed light onto a 20'x20' white flat, which was reflected by the glass into the lens. Onscreen, shot through the glass, the royal couple seemed to pass through a warm aura of mysterious illumination that was softened even more by a hint of gauze diffusion. Kline controlled colors and contrast on the picture by pre-flashing his negative, a technique he had heard about but never used. Because the process opened up the shadows slightly, he used far less fill than usual. Pre-flashing also muted the colors a bit, lending the realm of Camelot a burnished, more naturalistic look.Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1978-79)- Cinematographer

Cinematographer Andrew Laszlo was born on January 12, 1926 in Papa, Hungary. Laszlo started out as a camera apprentice at the Motion Picture Studios of Budapest when World War II began. Andrew and his family were sent to a Nazi concentration camp; he was the sole member of his family to survive this. Laszlo immigrated to America in 1947 and worked as a freelance still photographer. He was drafted into the U.S. Army and served in the Signal Corps as a combat photographer during the Korean War. After working for a producer of industrial films in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Andrew began to work in television in the mid 50s; he was initially a camera operator for "The Phil Silvers Show" and later a director of photography for the TV series "Naked City" and "Coronet Blue." He shot his first theatrical feature "One Potatoe, Two Potatoe" in 1964. Among the other notable movies Laszlo worked as a cinematographer on are "You're a Big Boy Now," "The Night They Raided Minsky's," "The Out of Towners," "The Warriors" (this was the first of three motion pictures he shot for Walter Hill), "The Funhouse," "First Blood," "Innerspace," and "Star Trek V: The Final Frontier." He received Emmy Award nominations for his work on "Man With a Country" in 1973 and "Shogun" in 1980. Outside of his film and television program work, Laszlo also shot TV commercials for such top advertisers as Kodak, Sprint, Budweiser, Chevrolet, and American Express. Moreover, Andrew wrote several books that include his autobiography "Footnote to History" which was published in 2002. In addition, Laszlo taught cinematography at workshops, seminars, and universities. Andrew died at age 85 at his home in Bozeman, Montana on October 7, 2011; he was survived by his wife Ann; three sons and a daughter; and five grandchildren.Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1988)- Cinematographer
