Scream movies ranked
I think, in general, the Scream series has better production values and a better cast than most slashers, plus the creative combo of Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson, who had a strong vision for what it should be.
For me personally, one of the main reasons Scream is better than other slasher franchises is the whodunnit element.
For one, guessing who is under the mask each time keeps you thinking and paying attention to what everyone is doing, where everyone is. What might be a red-herring. And the post-modern element, the fact that the movie knows we're trying to do this, turns it into a game.
Second, it avoids the whole tiresome, 'Jason/Michael/etc wasn't really dead after all' that most slasher sequels rely on. Scream movies are able to have an element of finality by finishing off the villain in the finale, even thought someone else takes up the mask later on.
And thirdly, there's something compelling about the idea that the Ghostface identity keeps being resurrected by different people - for different reasons. With other slasher movies, no explanation for the killer is required - but in each Scream, we learn who the killer(s) is, why they did it, and the impact of the previous movies on them. This allows the movies comment on society and pop culture of the time, and also creates a weird legacy for Ghostface. Plus the fact that he keeps coming back gives him a grim reaper vibe - you can't outrun death forever.
