- DirectorMatt ReevesStarsRobert PattinsonZoë KravitzJeffrey WrightWhen a sadistic serial killer begins murdering key political figures in Gotham, The Batman is forced to investigate the city's hidden corruption and question his family's involvement. This movie is the perfect Batman reboot. It gives us a Batman story that feels grounded, while also comic book-y and personal. It focuses on the detective/mystery side of the story, which is something no other Batman movie has done before. Robert Pattinson is perfectly cast, and so is everyone else. It also gives Batman a very well constructed character arc, which we haven’t had since the Lego Batman movie. Overall, it shows how a hard reboot can compliment other films in its franchise
Goes on a bit too long in the climax - DirectorDaniel KwanDaniel ScheinertStarsMichelle YeohStephanie HsuJamie Lee CurtisA middle-aged Chinese immigrant is swept up into an insane adventure in which she alone can save existence by exploring other universes and connecting with the lives she could have led. What’s easily the biggest crowd pleaser if the year is almost my number 1. Just the sheer concepts and ideas in this movie are so huge and mind opening, but also done in a very accessible and easy to follow way. While the movie’s not afraid to be tongue and cheek, it also explores some very relatable ideas like regret and sorrow.
- DirectorSteven SpielbergStarsMichelle WilliamsGabriel LaBellePaul DanoGrowing up in post-World War II era Arizona, young Sammy Fabelman aspires to become a filmmaker as he reaches adolescence, but soon discovers a shattering family secret and explores how the power of films can help him see the truth.Such a great exploration as to why people love movies and what inspires people to make them. This is easily Spielberg’s most personal movie, and it truly resonated with the filmmaker inside of me in a way no other movie ever has.
- DirectorJoseph KosinskiStarsTom CruiseJennifer ConnellyMiles TellerAfter thirty years, Maverick is still pushing the envelope as a top naval aviator, but must confront ghosts of his past when he leads TOP GUN's elite graduates on a mission that demands the ultimate sacrifice from those chosen to fly it.Truly an auteur film from the greatest movie star of our time. Every action set piece is truly a cinematic accomplishment in its own. On top of the spectacle, the movie tells a great story about legacy and aging, and questioning your place in the world.
While it’s certainly not the most thematically rich movie on the list, it shows that there is merit to doing fan service correctly. - DirectorB.J. NovakStarsB.J. NovakBoyd HolbrookLio TiptonA writer from New York City attempts to solve the murder of a girl he hooked up with and travels down south to investigate the circumstances of her death and discover what happened to her.Definitely the most underrated movie on this list. BJ Novak offers an interesting look at the cultural differences between different parts of the US. The film touches on the superficiality of urban living, the egocentrism that comes with media creation, and t
- DirectorDavid LeitchStarsBrad PittJoey KingAaron Taylor-JohnsonFive assassins aboard a swiftly-moving bullet train find out that their missions have something in common.Such a bizarre combination of Guy Ritchie, Tarantino, and much more.
Every character in the ensemble is unique and quirky, all the action is well shot and inventive, and the humor is on point. Definitely one of the most refreshing action films we’ve had in a while - DirectorZach CreggerStarsGeorgina CampbellBill SkarsgårdJustin LongA woman staying at an Airbnb discovers that the house she has rented is not what it seems.By far the most suspenseful movie I saw of the year.
The tensions is amazing, the plot is well structured.
My one gripe: It sets a character up for an arc, the takes away any development that was established. - DirectorTi WestStarsMia GothJenna OrtegaBrittany SnowIn 1979, a group of young filmmakers set out to make an adult film in rural Texas, but when their reclusive, elderly hosts catch them in the act, the crew find themselves fighting for their lives.Such a fun jab at low budget slashers and exploitation movies. It’s very self reflective and
The themes didn’t tie together as well as I thought they should. - DirectorS.S. RajamouliStarsN.T. Rama Rao Jr.Ram CharanAjay DevgnA fearless warrior on a perilous mission comes face to face with a steely cop serving British forces in this epic saga set in pre-independent India.Such a great examination of the friendship between the two leads.
The action is over-the-top and spectacular, the - DirectorRian JohnsonStarsDaniel CraigEdward NortonKate HudsonTech billionaire Miles Bron invites his friends for a getaway on his private Greek island. When someone turns up dead, Detective Benoit Blanc is put on the case. While not as great as the first, Glass Onion is still a solid twist on the whodunnit genre. It features a great ensemble cast, a lot of fun twists and turns, and some very poignant social commentary. Overall, i can’t wait for movie 3.
- DirectorSam RaimiStarsBenedict CumberbatchElizabeth OlsenChiwetel EjioforDoctor Strange teams up with a mysterious teenage girl who can travel across multiverses, to battle other-universe versions of himself which threaten to wipe out the multiverse. They seek help from the Scarlet Witch, Wong and others. An excellent return to the superhero genre for Raimi.
One of the most tonally and aesthetically distinct Marvel films.
Has some of the most fun moments in the MCU since Phase 2.
Some sloppy exposition
Wanda feels a bit one note - DirectorMatt Bettinelli-OlpinTyler GillettStarsNeve CampbellCourteney CoxDavid Arquette25 years after a streak of brutal murders shocked the quiet town of Woodsboro, Calif., a new killer dons the Ghostface mask and begins targeting a group of teenagers to resurrect secrets from the town's deadly past. This movie is the perfect legacy sequel and the perfect satire of legacy sequels. The new characters are a blast, the jokes and meta moments are hilarious, and the commentary is the best it’s been since Scream 1.
That being said, Ghostface’s motivation is a bit weak and some of the legacy characters feel underutilized. - DirectorJames CameronStarsSam WorthingtonZoe SaldanaSigourney WeaverJake Sully lives with his newfound family formed on the extrasolar moon Pandora. Once a familiar threat returns to finish what was previously started, Jake must work with Neytiri and the army of the Na'vi race to protect their home.Adds a lot to the world building of Pandora, continues the character arcs from the first movie, and introduces some great new characters. The action is great, the effects are incredible, and the movie does a great job immersing you in the world of Pandora.
However, I didn’t feel as invested in the plot and characters as other people. I think it’s a bit too repetitive of the first movie and not quite as impactful as Cameron wants it to be. - DirectorMark MylodStarsRalph FiennesAnya Taylor-JoyNicholas HoultA young couple travels to a remote island to eat at an exclusive restaurant where the chef has prepared a lavish menu, with some shocking surprises. An interesting deconstruction of food culture, the service industry, and consumerism. The performances are great, the characters have layers, and there’s a lot of fun dark humor.
However, it didn’t quite hit me as hard as I wish it had. - DirectorEdward BergerStarsFelix KammererAlbrecht SchuchAaron HilmerA young German soldier's terrifying experiences and distress on the western front during World War I.Truly captures the horror and tragedy of war. It puts the viewer in the POV of a WWI soldier and makes you feel like you’re in the trenches constantly struggling to survive.
However, the characters aren’t as fleshed out as the film wants them to be and the last big drags a tad. - DirectorJoel CrawfordJanuel MercadoStarsAntonio BanderasSalma HayekHarvey GuillénWhen Puss in Boots discovers that his passion for adventure has taken its toll and he has burned through eight of his nine lives, he launches an epic journey to restore them by finding the mythical Last Wish.A lot of fun characters, some rich ideas about aging and legacy, and a lot of great humor. However, didn’t quite hit me as much as I felt it should. Maybe i set me expectations too high?
- DirectorRyan CooglerStarsLetitia WrightLupita Nyong'oDanai GuriraThe people of Wakanda fight to protect their home from intervening world powers as they mourn the death of King T'Challa. This movie did the best it could without Chadwick. It managed to construct a solid arc for Shuri, continue the story of Wakanda, and build on the mythos of the MCU.
- DirectorRuben ÖstlundStarsThobias ThorwidHarris DickinsonCharlbi DeanA fashion model celebrity couple join an eventful cruise for the super-rich.Interesting exploration of gender roles and class.
Some layered characters, a lot of great comedy, and some cool visuals.
However, the movie’s last act drags a bit, and starts to feel tedious, - DirectorShawn LevyStarsRyan ReynoldsWalker ScobellMark RuffaloAfter accidentally crash-landing in 2022, time-traveling fighter pilot Adam Reed teams up with his 12-year-old self for a mission to save the future.Had some fun characters, good action ,and some nice themes about fatherhood and regret.
- DirectorTom GormicanStarsNicolas CagePedro PascalTiffany HaddishMoviestar Nick Cage is channeling his iconic characters as he's caught between a superfan and a CIA agent.Really liked the idea of Nicholas Cage playing his public persona.
Cage is of course great, and Pascal is surprisingly great. - DirectorMartin McDonaghStarsColin FarrellBrendan GleesonKerry CondonTwo lifelong friends find themselves at an impasse when one abruptly ends their relationship, with alarming consequences for both of them.Such a great simple concept. The characters are fascinating, the performances are incredible, and the cinematography is gorgeous. However, the movie runs out of steam about 20 mins before it ends, making the last chunk drag.
- DirectorJordan PeeleStarsDaniel KaluuyaKeke PalmerBrandon PereaThe residents of a lonely gulch in inland California bear witness to an uncanny and chilling discovery.Good performances. Fantastic direction and excellent atmosphere/suspense. However, it leaves some things a little too ambiguous
- DirectorAkiva SchafferStarsAndy SambergJohn MulaneyKiKi LayneThirty years after their popular television show ended, chipmunks Chip and Dale live very different lives. When a cast member from the original series mysteriously disappears, the pair must reunite to save their friend.Fun concept, great meta-commentary, and lots of good humor.
- DirectorDamien ChazelleStarsBrad PittMargot RobbieJean SmartA tale of outsized ambition and outrageous excess, it traces the rise and fall of multiple characters during an era of unbridled decadence and depravity in early Hollywood.Despite fantastic writing, directing, and acting, failed to illicit as much emotion as it wanted.
- DirectorDarren AronofskyStarsBrendan FraserSadie SinkTy SimpkinsA reclusive, morbidly obese English teacher attempts to reconnect with his estranged teenage daughter.Excellent performance from Fraser and some complex ideas.
However, Aronofsky’s misunderstanding of Christianity makes the film not as resonant as it could be. - DirectorRobert EggersStarsAlexander SkarsgårdNicole KidmanClaes BangA young Viking prince is on a quest to avenge his father's murder.Excellent direction, acting, cinematography, and editing.
Truly an auteur epic.
However, the main character isn’t very likable, making the moments that are supposed to be emotionally satisfying not - DirectorClay KaytisStarsPeter BillingsleyErinn HayesRiver DroscheFollows the now-adult Ralphie as he returns to the house on Cleveland Street to give his kids a magical Christmas like the one he had as a child, reconnecting with childhood friends, and reconciling the passing of his Old Man.Fun performances, a lot of heart, but a bit too many “remember this?” Moments
- DirectorMichael GiacchinoStarsGael García BernalLaura DonnellyHarriet Sansom HarrisFollows a lycanthrope superhero who fights evil using the abilities given to him by a curse brought on by his bloodline.Something truly different from Marvel studios.
While not the most layered or deep, and intriguing story with a unique concept - DirectorTommy WirkolaStarsDavid HarbourJohn LeguizamoBeverly D'AngeloAn elite team of mercenaries breaks into a family compound on Christmas Eve, taking everyone hostage. However, they aren't prepared for a surprise combatant: Santa Claus is on the grounds, and he's about to show why this Nick is no saint. The inherent concept is a lot of fun
David Harbour is the perfect person to play the part.
The movie is a solid action comedy with some heart and good performances - DirectorSarah PolleyStarsRooney MaraClaire FoyJessie BuckleyDo nothing, stay and fight, or leave. In 2010, the women of an isolated religious community grapple with reconciling a brutal reality with their faith. The movie features some good performances and a solid script. It does a good job using dialogue to reveal character
The plot felt a bit aimless. Overall, didn’t resonate the way it could have. - DirectorTi WestStarsMia GothDavid CorenswetTandi WrightIn 1918, a young woman on the brink of madness pursues stardom in a desperate attempt to escape the drudgery, isolation, and lovelessness of life on her parents' farm.I just didn’t get what everyone saw in this movie. I thought it was okay. I think the gore was decent, the writing was solid, and Pearl’s character arc worked. But I don’t get why everyone’s clamoring about why this is one of the greatest prequels ever. Despite Mia Goth’s fantastic performance, it felt like just another “good girl goes bad” movie
- DirectorJames GunnStarsLuke KleinSean GunnMichael RookerStar-Lord, Drax, Rocket, Mantis, and Groot engage in some spirited shenanigans in an all-new original special created for Disney+.A fun, lighthearted, Christmas special with some good James Gunn humor and some good character moments
- DirectorBJ McDonnellStarsDave GrohlNate MendelPat SmearLegendary rock band Foo Fighters move into an Encino mansion steeped in grisly rock and roll history to record their much anticipated 10th album.Exactly what I expected it to be. A simple, funny supernatural horror comedy with some goo laughs and a fun premise.
However, the premise is the movie’s biggest strength and weakness.
Since the Foo Fighters are musicians, not actors, the performances arent amazing. Pat Smear and Rami Jaffe are the best.
Some of the other Foo Fighters don’t feel as committed as Grohl does. - DirectorDavid Gordon GreenStarsJamie Lee CurtisAndi MatichakJames Jude CourtneyThe saga of Michael Myers and Laurie Strode comes to a spine-chilling climax in the final installment of this trilogy.I enjoyed how this movie tried something new and focused on how another person could become evil like MM.
However, the characters arcs weren’t well defined, the plot was inconsistent with the previous movies, and overall, this movie did not work as a third chapter in a trilogy - DirectorDavid YatesStarsEddie RedmayneJude LawEzra MillerAlbus Dumbledore knows that Gellert Grindelwald is moving to take control of the wizarding world. Unable to stop him alone, he asks Newt Scamander to lead an intrepid team on a dangerous mission. While this film improves on its predecessor by focusing on one clear plotline, the main plotline isn’t very engaging, the characters make a lot of confusing decisions, and the world building feels inconsistent with other Wizarding World movies. Even the chemistry between Law and Mikkelsen couldn’t save this one
- DirectorHalina ReijnStarsAmandla StenbergMaria BakalovaMyha'laWhen a group of rich 20-somethings plan a hurricane party at a remote family mansion, a party game turns deadly.BBB did a good job poking fun at generation Z (my generation) and satirizing modern, and often unhealthy, friendships. However, the characters weren’t always likable, the writing needed more subtlety, and the twist was very predictable.
- DirectorJaume Collet-SerraStarsDwayne JohnsonAldis HodgePierce BrosnanNearly 5,000 years after he was bestowed with the almighty powers of the Egyptian gods--and imprisoned just as quickly--Black Adam is freed from his earthly tomb, ready to unleash his unique form of justice on the modern world.Black Adam had some good action and some fun characters, but the pacing was inconsistent the the main plotline wasn’t interesting.
- DirectorTodd FieldStarsCate BlanchettNoémie MerlantNina HossSet in the international world of Western classical music, the film centers on Lydia Tár, widely considered one of the greatest living composer-conductors and the very first female director of a major German orchestra.Despite an excellent performance from Cate Blanchett, Tar was boring and uninteresting. It introduces multiple ideas, themes, plotlines, and conflicts, but hardly follows up on any of them. In the end, the movie just feels intentionally pointless
- DirectorColin TrevorrowStarsChris PrattBryce Dallas HowardLaura DernFour years after the destruction of Isla Nublar, Biosyn operatives attempt to track down Maisie Lockwood, while Dr Ellie Sattler investigates a genetically engineered swarm of giant insects. While there’s some good Dinosaur action and some solid CGI and practical effects, the movie ignores its own premise. On top fi that, the acting leaves a lot to be desired and the character arcs feel shallow
- DirectorTaika WaititiStarsChris HemsworthNatalie PortmanChristian BaleThor enlists the help of Valkyrie, Korg and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster to fight Gorr the God Butcher, who intends to make the gods extinct.Performances are solid, especially Bale
Way too much humor. Ends up cutting all dramatic tension
Also, too much bad CGI
I’ll admit, they may have let Waititi go to far with this one - DirectorLuke CormicanGino NicheleStarsBrady NoonEthan William ChildressHunter DillonA new school year, his brother Rodrick teases him over and over and over and over again. Will Greg manage to get along with him? Or will a secret ruin everything? Some okay animation, but lacks the clever satire and relatability of the books
