- DirectorJoann SfarStarsEric ElmosninoLucy GordonLaetitia CastaA glimpse at the life of French singer Serge Gainsbourg, from growing up in 1940s Nazi-occupied Paris through his successful song-writing years in the 1960s to his death in 1991 at the age of 62.Watched in November 2010
Serge Gainsbourg was many things: an artist, writer, painter, alcoholic and lover to many. He is a fascinating man who lead a fascinating life and director Joann Sfar makes a great effort here to portray it all. From the early days prior to WWII Gainsbourg was clearly going to amount to something. As he grew older and dabbled here and there in various art forms and dabbled in various women with lovers including Bridgette Bardot and Jane Birkin. Yet as he grew older Gainsbourg dabbled in more drink and drugs and this led to a troubled life.
I was to begin with fascinated by this man, full of charm and wit and ideas abounding. Yet as the film progressed I felt less and less concerned by this man and began wondering when the film might end. As interesting he was, he was also not the nicest of characters, especially in his latter years when he appears to be a drunk and grumpy man. The little touches of fantasy work well to begin with, Gainsbourg's 'imaginary friend' is interesting, but then becomes more and more grotesque and yet more annoying and often blurs the line between realism and surrealism.
Ultimately this has enough to provide an interesting account of someone who had a very full life, but for me it lost it's way part way through and therefore lost it's momentum. - DirectorDaniel GellerDayna GoldfineStarsCate BlanchettSebastian KochThomas KretschmannAbout a series of unsolved disappearances on the Galapagos Island of Floreana in the 1930s.MIFF 2014

- DirectorJosh FoxStarsJosh FoxDick CheneyPete SeegerAn exploration of the fracking petroleum extraction industry and the serious environmental consequences involved.Watched in November 2010
This is perhaps one of the most shocking and disturbing films I've seen and the fact that it's all real is even more terrifying. The film follows Josh Fox who has been offered a vast amount of money by those who wish to drill on his land for natural gas. Concerned about the after effect he goes in search of some details.
What he finds is so utterly disturbing and sad and that being huge amounts of people whose health and welfare have been effected by natural gas drilling in their back yard. The industry is enormous and the amount of gas sites are in the hundreds of thousands some are even on 'public land'. People across much of the central USA have them in their back yards, tanks, drills, containers and various other pieces of industry, small to some comparison but still a blot on the landscape. But aesthetics are far from the worse of concerns.
The drilling for gas creates water contamination with a huge cocktail of chemicals seeping into drinking wells, streams and lakes. What was for years safe, whole areas are so full of chemical concoctions that in some instances if you hold a lit flame to a water source it erupts into flames. People have become sick due to the high quantities of dangerous and hazardous chemicals, pets and farm animals lose their hair and yet the companies involved do tests and say the water is safe to drink.
Watching these people is distressing, living on the land, with generations of history they are now powerless to do anything as the companies refuse to acknowledge the issue. They would also unlikely to sell up as no-one would buy a property with a great big well in the back yard, let alone if they knew the issues that come with it. That the US government, thanks to Dick Cheney, signed a law that made the companies exempt from the Clean Water Bill among others is shocking, had it been otherwise, this may not be happening.
There is some powerful stuff in this: the list of trucks it takes to actually make a natural gas well or the list of long complex chemical compounds used and found. There is the third generations farmer who is at a loss of what to do seeing the land around him change in the worse way possible. It is relentless, with person after person speaking about the effects, illness's, chemical clouds, explosions in the middles of the night and more that they now suffer. Independent tests show that water samples are so full of chemicals or that air samples are so dangerously over the recommended levels it's hard to imagine the ongoing consequences.
The film does at last show a glimmer of hope that being a small selection of activists and politicians making a stand and trying to stop what has happened in many parts of the US happening in those untouched. Near the end we see a congressional hearing in which some of the big companies spokespeople are brought down in a few simple questions, their denial that there is a risk, blatant lies which are not received well.
There is mention that despite the US setting there is relevance to Australia, indeed world wide. You can only hope that more people will see this film. My only gripe is the camera work, which at times is so bad, it's like a 5yr old was operating the camera. Otherwise this is powerful, shocking and moving stuff. - DirectorDror MorehStarsAmi AyalonAvraham ShalomAvi DichterA documentary featuring interviews with all surviving former heads of Shin Bet, the Israeli security agency whose activities and membership are closely held state secrets.Interesting film. great to see the views of those so close to conflict and how they have evolved over years
- DirectorAndrew NiccolStarsEthan HawkeUma ThurmanJude LawA genetically inferior man assumes the identity of a superior one in order to pursue his lifelong dream of space travel.Watched in Janaury 2011
Having not seen this sine it first came out I though it time to revisit it. Made back in 1996, this sci-fi film tells the story of Vincent -played by Ethan Hawke- who is born with defects and so can never travel into space to fulfill his dream. He decides though to try and pays to take on the identity of Jerome (Jude Law) who has perfect genetics and therefore is a ticket to the stars. Jerome has to supply Vincent with urine and blood samples all of which may be tested at any time at the Gattaca Institute. Vincent has also ensure that he has no loose hairs or skin that may be found and analyzed breaking his secret. His fake perfection leads to a place on a mission to Triton and a romance with co worker Irene (Uma Thurman), but when a murder at Gattaca occurs a stray eyelash of Vincent's may expose him and bring his dreams crashing down.
It's best to describe this as perhaps arthouse sci-fi. There is no big brash special effects, there is no need, for it the story is really focused on the human side. Hawke is excellent as Vincent, his transformation from Vincent to Jerome is subtle yet brilliant. Uma Thurman has little to do with Irene and perhaps this is a character that could have been further explored. The idea of genetic manipulation and the strive for perfection is cleverly woven into the fabric of the film and yet it never over does itself, there are no super human freaks and the suggestion of a genetic divide is a subtle one, but hints at the dangerous potential are made with a performance by a 12 fingered pianist. The 'Not so distant future' is presented with less focus on technology but more on idea of genetic advances although there are little hints at what is to come, such as electric cars and phone watches.
The artistic side of the film is brilliant and gives the reason I call it arthouse sci-fi. Beautifully photographed with subdued colours, often browns and greens, there is a stylish, sleek and ultra modern look to it. Clean lines and simplistic style abound in sets aswell as the use of some fantastic architecture it all helps give it a contemporary look that is both familiar and unfamiliar. Scored by a restrained Michael Nyman, the music is beautifully suited.
The film is perhaps one of the finest yet underrated sci-fi films that's provides for a fascinating yet laid back thriller, that is ultimately quite moving. - DirectorMark SandrichStarsFred AstaireGinger RogersAlice BradyA woman thinks a flirting man is the co-respondent her lawyer has hired to expedite her divorce.another lovely Fred & Ginger outing. It feels, plot wise similar to Top Hat, mistaken identity. Astaire is superb dancing. Some nice quips – like, I’m not leaving you with an Italian, he might be a tenor.

- DirectorMichael WinterbottomStarsColin FirthPerla Haney-JardineWilla HollandA man moves his two daughters to Italy after their mother dies in a car accident, in order to revitalize their lives. Genova changes all three of them as the youngest daughter starts to see the ghost of her mother, while the older one discovers her sexuality.Great to look at, it plays well and is at times quite moving, but feels a little flat and not involving.
- DirectorHoward HawksStarsJane RussellMarilyn MonroeCharles CoburnShowgirls Lorelei Lee and Dorothy Shaw travel to Paris, pursued by a private detective hired by the suspicious father of Lorelei's fiancé, as well as a rich, enamored old man and many other doting admirers.Watched in November 2010
From the stunning opening number with the dazzling dresses in sparkling red (eat your heart out Dorothy with your ruby red shoes!) the film is absolutely wonderful. Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russel are the showgirls and best friends who arrive in Paris for Lorelei's (Monroe) wedding. Of course Lorelei likes diamonds and everything goes wrong.
This is true entertainment that is impossible to fault. The two female leads are sublime, oozing sexuality and confidence, but especially in Monroe's case, perfect comic timing. There are some hilarious moments in this: when Lorelei gets stuck in the porthole and then pretends to be enjoying the view-with the help Henry Spofford or there is the scene where the girls get Ernie drunk and pour water over his trousers is just brilliant. Another fine scene is where Dorothy pretends to be Lorelei in court. Infact I laughed so much during this and when I wasn't laughing I was smiling.
The film looks great in it's glorious technicolour which is even more vivid in the array of costumes and make up: the outfits the girls sport are so stunning it becomes a shame there aren't more costume changes. Diamonds of course abound given more spectacle to the costumes. But there's more to this than costumes and firstly that's the two leads. Jane Russel and Marilyn Monroe are so perfect in these roles and Monroe really is Monroe in this. Everything she is loved for is here, her wonderful facial expressions with her subtle widening of her eyes or pouting of her lips make watching her mesmerizing. Despite her characters 'blondness' she is very clever and that we get to see that and that she isn't dumb blond makes her more likable. Secondly there is the fact that for a film in 1953, the film really does have women firmly in the lead, in a strong and confident manner and one that, as I said, oozes sexuality and more importantly from the women. Dorothy flirts with the entire Olympic team and later sings and dances with them as they train only in tan coloured briefs. Every time Lorelei enters a room she turns heads and when she kisses her fiance he vagues out. But with all this the women are completely in control of actions and not only are aware of the reactions to them, but also how to control it. Empowerment? Of course.
This is a screwball comedy of course and so any notion of women's empowerment is very underlying and perhaps back in 1953 it would have gone more or less unnoticed. But at the end of it, this is about entertainment and if this film doesn't entertain you, make you laugh and make you leave you with a smile on your face with it's deliciousness then you probably not go and see films. - DirectorGus Van SantStarsCasey AffleckMatt DamonA friendship between two young men is tested when they go for a hike in a desert and forget to bring any water or food with them.Often tense film about a desperate situation, very difficult to hear Affleck at times.
- DirectorAaron SchneiderStarsRobert DuvallBill MurraySissy SpacekA movie spun out of equal parts folk tale, fable and real-life legend about the mysterious, 1930s Tennessee hermit who famously threw his own rollicking funeral party... while he was still alive.Watched in July 2011
Felix Bush lives in a small hut in the midst of a forest, a hermit, who's life remains something of a mystery to the local townsfolk who seem to have made their own stories and rumours up about him. Growing old and weary, Felix decides to thrown a big party, a funeral party - his own.
Involving the local funeral home, he builds on his plan to tell a story, one that interests Mattie who has just arrived back in town after losing her husband. The two have a connection and Mattie seeks a truth, one that Felix seems reluctant to give, perhaps because after holding it in for 40 years it's more difficult to reveal what he's held close to his heart and made him the man he's become.
In the beginning the film appears to a be a wry look at the end of life, but gradually the film changes from funny to moving as Felix faces his hidden past. Robert Duvall as Felix, gives a truly wonderful performance, gentle, yet misunderstood and deep down very pained. There are also fine performances from Sissy Spacek as Mattie and the ever brilliant Bill Murray adds his superb skills to the role of funeral home owner Frank Quinn - I don't think I could ever tire watching him.
Scored with some wonderful music this wonderful film grows on you gradually and in the end I found this very moving as Felix not only faces the ghosts of his past, but also faces the final days of his life and as he finally manages to let out what has shaped his life, it is difficult not to be moved by how one event alters lives irrevocably.

- DirectorDavid KoeppStarsRicky GervaisGreg KinnearTéa LeoniBertram Pincus is a man whose people skills leave much to be desired. When Pincus dies unexpectedly, but is miraculously revived after seven minutes, he wakes up to discover that he now has the annoying ability to see ghosts.Watched in October 2009
I came into this with some trepidation, but I actually enjoyed it . Ricky Gervais is not too Ricky Gervais and there are some very funny moments, such as the scene where the doctor and Gervais have a stilted conversation and the scene where he is chased by ghosts with a violin score playing, only for the camera to reveal the violin being played by a busker.
I also found it quite moving when he finally helps the dead and there is a nice performance from Tea Leoni. All in all the film is perfect choice for when you are flu riddled and sofa bound. - DirectorTerry ZwigoffStarsSteve BuscemiThora BirchScarlett JohanssonTwo eccentric best friends graduate high school and respond to a man's romance-seeking newspaper ad as a gag, only to find their lives becoming increasingly complicated.Likable film, nice cast and love the old indian film clips.
- DirectorRoman PolanskiStarsEwan McGregorPierce BrosnanOlivia WilliamsA ghost writer, hired to complete the memoirs of a former British Prime Minister, uncovers secrets that put his own life in jeopardy.Listed as The Ghost Writer.
Watched in July 2010
I'm not a fan of thriller or political ones at that, but I was interested in seeing this as it's directed by Roman Polanski and with Ewan McGregor in the lead. The film is full of intrigue and dry humour and plays out well, but it felt overly long and two thirds in I began too shuffle. It's not that it's a bad film, but I don't think it's great. The cast are fine, McGregor does a good job and there was a huge murmur of recognition that the British assistant to the former PM was played by Samantha from Sex and The City, oh I mean Kim Cattrall. She actual does a good job and is far from her well known other screen character. The film look good aswell, bleak stark landscapes and modern structures dominate with a cold rainswept vista adding to the atmosphere.
Many might find this full of twists and tension, but on those levels it didn't work for me and gradually I became bored and jut wanted an outcome. Some of the plot seems over the top. Would a writer really sleep with the ex PM's wife? Would you really gain sensitive political information so freely from an internet search? Still it never becomes too ludicrous, apart from the blatant advert for BMW.
It does have elements to enjoy, but as thrillers goes, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo is a recent and much more enjoyable one. - DirectorIvan ReitmanStarsBill MurrayDan AykroydSigourney WeaverThree parapsychologists forced out of their university funding set up shop as a unique ghost removal service in New York City, attracting frightened yet skeptical customers.Just pure 80's brilliance. - DirectorSam RaimiStarsCate BlanchettKatie HolmesKeanu ReevesA fortune teller with extrasensory perception is asked to help find a young woman who has mysteriously disappeared.Over the top and not very thrilling or scary.

- DirectorDaniel AlfredsonStarsMichael NyqvistNoomi RapaceLena EndreLisbeth is recovering in a hospital and awaiting trial for three murders when she is released. Mikael must prove her innocence, but Lisbeth must be willing to share the details of her sordid experiences with the court.Watched in April 2011
Lisbeth is recovering in hospital after being violently attacked by her half brother. She awaits trial for among other things the attempted murder of her father. Her recovery is long, but she is aided by a helpful and charming doctor who keeps the men at bay who are trying to see the back of her. Mikael meanwhile continues to investigate a dreadful account of horrors that have plague Lisbeth aide by a group of men nick named 'The Section'. The trial begins once Lisbeth has recovered and thanks to the help of Mikael and his sister it looks like she may finally bring to justice those that have tortured her one way or another since she was little.
The third and final installment in the series based on the hugely popular books by Stieg Larsson, this wraps everything up and does so efficiently and effectively. Much of the film is really about Lisbeth recovering and therefore she has little to do for much of it, so it is left to the collecting of information to bring down 'The Section' to fill the film. Once we enter the trial Lisbeth is back in full punk goth regalia and adds some much needed humour to a difficult film.
The first part was a really engrossing and captivating film, whilst part 2 was less appealing and the final installment still struggles to provide the oomph of the first film, yet it does maintain a certain something, with the story flowing well and everything tied up by the end. Noomi Rapace again gives a standout performance here and the character of Lisbeth is a real standout of the entire trilogy. Well made, the film looks good, just as its predecessors do and whilst this doesn't stand up to the level of part 1, there is no doubt more to enjoy for fans of the books, but for those who haven't read them, if you've done the first two then there's a certain obligation and necessity to see this one out. - DirectorMamoru HosodaStarsRiisa NakaTakuya IshidaMitsutaka ItakuraA high-school girl named Makoto acquires the power to travel back in time, and decides to use it for her own personal benefits. Little does she know that she is affecting the lives of others just as much as she is her own.Found this a little difficult to enjoy, couldn't get into the story.
- DirectorDaniel AlfredsonStarsNoomi RapaceMichael NyqvistLena EndreAs computer hacker Lisbeth and journalist Mikael investigate a sex-trafficking ring, Lisbeth is accused of three murders, causing her to go on the run while Mikael works to clear her name.Watched in September 2010
After seeing The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, which I really enjoyed, I feel obliged to see out this trilogy and so went to see the second part.
It is a good film and as a thriller it works very well. It also works nicely as both a stand alone film and one that ties in events of the previous one and reveals more about it's main character Lisbeth. Lisbeth is a remarkable character and through this installment we get to understand her a little more. She has a troubled past, but is very clever and is ultimately a very strong willed woman which is great to see on film. The role of journalist Blomkvist does seem a little played down compared to the first one, it really focus' one Lisbeth.
The story itself feels a little more cumbersome, but there is plenty of intrigue and I like the way the story combines the use of modern technology, a sign of the era we live in. There are some parts that don't work that well, the fight scene in the shed is badly shot and attempts at other action sequences don't come off so well. Whilst Stockholm often looks radiant in the sunset bathed light, it often had the look of a TV movie. It also doesn't feel as tight as the first film, but it still manages to draw the viewer in sufficiently.
Not having read the books, and so not knowing what happens with the third and final installment, this second part maintains enough to want me to seek out the 3rd part. I am also glad to be seeing these original Swedish versions before the fast tracked Hollywood versions hit our screens. - DirectorNiels Arden OplevStarsMichael NyqvistNoomi RapaceEwa FrölingA journalist is aided by a young female hacker in his search for the killer of a woman who has been dead for forty years.Watched in July 2010
This is a very slick and stylish thriller based on the very popular books. I went having never read them and because the film has garnered good reviews and I'm glad to say that I enjoyed it immensely. The film has at it's core a brilliantly written story that despite the two and half hour running time kept me enthralled to the end. I found myself guessing throughout as to what had happened, who was the killer and what the outcome will be. For me, that speaks volumes about a film, that I'm engaged fully with the film and it's story.
The main two lead both do a great job, especially Noomi Rapace who has a very difficult role to play, but she does so very well. Her character is involved in some of the films more graphic and violent (and talked about) scenes, they are quite confronting, but she is a powerful woman and she gets her own back. Her friendship with Blomkvist is carried out well, there is even something quite touching. As is the brief scene when she visits her mother.
The films pace moves along smoothly and there is some stunning landscapes throughout and there is plenty of tension in this that makes this a great film that is full of shocking acts that make you wonder how people become like that. There are downsides: I found the beginning very confusing, but other than this its enough to make me look out for the next two installments. - DirectorDavid FincherStarsDaniel CraigRooney MaraChristopher PlummerJournalist Mikael Blomkvist is aided in his search for a woman who has been missing for 40 years by young computer hacker Lisbeth Salander.impressive remake, but it fails to live up to the original in impact.

This mutli-layered film won one of the main prizes at this Cannes Film Festival. So I had high hopes, but then just because something wins something doesn't it makes it a good film in everyones eyes. I was really confused during this film, so many people, doing things for other people. It was difficult to know whats going on. I did think the setting was amazing: the massive housing estates which the great buildings: It was often filmed as if real life was happening in the background and it wasnt staged. As if the film crew had turned up and just started filming! Shame about the people behind me talking. Shame I was so tired, I may have enjoyed it more. - DirectorBen AffleckStarsMorgan FreemanEd HarrisCasey AffleckTwo Boston area detectives investigate a little girl's kidnapping, which ultimately turns into a crisis both professionally and personally.Really good film, atmospheric and tense. - DirectorJeff StilsonStarsChris RockMaya AngelouAl SharptonChris Rock explores the wonders of African-American hairstyles.Watched in September 2010
Chris Rock isn't nearly as annoying in this documentary as he is in his acting roles and because of that this film about hair and specifically African American hair is pretty interesting. Because of the texture, thickness and various other reasons black hair is potentially more problematic than Caucasian hair. The film explores how the black community spend millions of dollars and countless hours changing their hair with a variety of means. Many have a weave, which enables the wearer to have almost any style of hair or combine it withe their hair. Seemingly they can cost a fortune, with many people paying $1000US. Then there are those that have chemicals applied to 'relax' it.
Through the film interviews with people having haircuts and those who cut hair are mixed with an array of celebrities talking about thier own experience and we are also introduced to four hairdressers who are competing in a 'hair off' at a expo of the African American hair industry. Those we meet throughout are both men and woman and all have similar experiences, rarely do we meet anyone who has 'natural' hair, infact it would appear the this is almost a no no within the community.
Another interesting side was learning that the human hair used in wigs and weaves comes not from African Americans, but from Indians. A huge hair industry has sprung up and it appears that most in the industry know that buyers and users aren't interested in 'black' hair.
The film gives an interesting insight into what could be said to be a very race based situation, but although it never does compare the hair situations of other races, it is perhaps understood that African American hair is one of the more challenging to work with. - DirectorBarry LevinsonStarsRobin WilliamsForest WhitakerTom T. - DirectorNicholas D. WrathallStarsGore VidalHoward AusterJames BestThis is an unashamedly opinionated film. In Gore Vidal's America, the political coup has already happened. The right have triumphed and the human values of the liberals have been consigned to history. But how did this happen and who organized it? In this film Gore Vidal's acerbic, opinionated and informed approach rips away at the facade of the new America. The film dramatizes Gore's political views and his concern at the present state of American democracy using interviews and historical footage of his famous appearances on television and talk shows over the last fifty years. In the recently filmed interviews Gore examines the course of American history and policy making and draws dramatic conclusions on the fate of the nation in the modern age.Brilliant doco about Vidal, so much with and intelligence.

- DirectorJames BoltonStarsRuben BansiePledgure DuoshunZachary S. SmallsAdrift in a lush, nocturnal urban landscape, Nick is a post-modern urban hero asserting his anarchistic agenda on the endless maze of virgin exterior walls that comprise downtown Seattle and Portland. For writer/director Bolton's lonely "tagger" protagonist, the vast wall surfaces of deserted alleys and trainyards are at once a daunting symbol of capitalist oppression and a texturally rich, seamless tableau ripe for exploitation to amplify his artistic dialectic of anger and rebellion. His own virtually anonymous existence seemingly only secondary to the painted surfaces and "rupture the system" manifesto which more poignantly evidence his presence, Nick's prodigious solo graffiti output is interrupted by friendship with another young tagger. Their communication begins as less verbal than a kind of shared graphic tour de force; their enormous collaborative graffiti murals appear to emerge as the unmistakable offspring of their kindred spirit. But eventually their assumptions about one another are disproved as political, emotional and ethical issues arise which cause their relationship to dissolve into the background of urban detritus, and the artists themselves emerge only further atomized and alienated by the experience. Compelling themes, sensitive performances, and luscious visuals define this film which is a revealing immersion into the experiential reality of those daring to make their art in a socially condemned arena. For a film ostensibly focusing on manipulated surfaces, Bolton's cinematic artistry probes deep into the consciousness of the "tagger" and "graffiti artist" sub-culture.Excellent gay drama, well played out.

The racist language was really full on, even for me, but I guess thats part of the message. Clint Eastwood is very good as the old bigot and there were some nice moments in it, including some subtle moments of humour, helping to lighten the film enough so it didn't become too depressing.

Soon after the Iraq invasion, Officer Miller (Matt Damon) and his team are charged with finding weapons of mass destruction. Among the chaos of war, information comes in different forms and not always reliable, but something becomes clear, that there may not be any weapons. Miller is surrounded by danger and sources of information including a journo and a local, but much of the danger is trying to work out who to believe.
Making a bold statment about the second Iraq war, this film does try to present a suggestive look at how it must of been. The threats and danger are clear and the tension is well mounted; the setting is well recreated. Damon does okay as Miller, although he seemed to be speaking with an odd gravelly voice which seemed out of place. But I just couldn't get into this film; even though the premise is interesting intially it becomes more like a stock standard war film and I began to lose interest rapidly, which is shame as it does have potential to offer much more. - DirectorNoah BaumbachStarsBen StillerGreta GerwigJennifer Jason LeighA man from Los Angeles, who moved to New York years ago, returns to L.A. to figure out his life while he house-sits for his brother. He soon sparks with his brother's assistant.Watched in August 2010
Noah Baumbach recent efforts Margot At The Wedding and the Squid And The Whale, were both fine films, so I was interested in seeing his latest Greenberg. Ben Stiller stars in this as a man struggling with his life, who meets a woman and begins a romance with her. Greenberg is a very unlikable person at times, although he often reminds one of some neurotic Woody Allen creation and has at times a certain charm. Stiller is very toned down in this and a such does a good job. Stealing his limelight is Greta Gerwig as Florence who gives a fine performance here. Florence is a little odd in her ways and so there is perhaps a connection between the two, but if this is meant to be a character study, it fails to be anything but a study in dullness. So very little happens, that it's difficult to maintain interest and with a unlikable main character, the film plods along, to the point where I longed for the credits to start.
It's a shame the film falls flat, especially when you consider previous efforts from Baumbach. Whilst there are some things going for it, mostly in performances, including a good supporting role from Rhys Ifans, there is very little going for it, especially when it runs at nearly 2hrs, it's a tough film experience. - DirectorJoe CarnahanStarsLiam NeesonDermot MulroneyFrank GrilloAfter their plane crashes in Alaska, six oil workers are led by a skilled huntsman to survival, but a pack of merciless wolves haunts their every step. All a little bit silly.

- DirectorLeon FordStarsRyan KwantenMaeve DermodyMarshall NapierGriff, office worker by day, superhero by night, has his world turned upside down when he meets Melody, a beautiful young scientist who shares his passion for the impossible.Watched in April 2011
Griff is something of a recluse, spending his days at work in an office where is gets bullied by his colleagues and at night at home he is visited by his brother who has started dated Melody, a young scientist. Yet at night Griff becomes a superhero with the mission to rid the streets of crime. But his life is thrown upside down when he meets Melody and an attraction forms. Can this new friendship become something else and can Griff use his powers to make his own life better?
This Australian film really does earns marks for trying it's hardest. It starts well with our introduction to superhero Griff and there are some nice special effects and camera work. Ryan Kwanten is wonderful as the shy and awkward Griff and the scenes of bullying are often quite tragic, you really feel sorry for the guy. But towards the end the film begins to suggest that much of what we see isn't of course real and that young Griff has a few mental health issues and his becoming a superhero is all but fantasy. The fact that this misleading disconcerts me a little, especially as the film plays for the most part very straight and doesn't allude to the fact that anything is amiss.
It's a real shame the outcome is as such, being none the wiser worked better for the film and as Griff and Melody bond there is a real charm to seeing Griff come out of his shell only for this world to be shattered by the notion that he is a little crazy. Had the film been handled differently, it could have been a fantastic take on the superhero genre that makes it a little bit real, but ultimately it feels a little lost. But still there is some aspects to enjoy and it's a commendable effort - DirectorAlex van WarmerdamStarsTeresa BerganzaJohan LeysenHalina ReijnOne winter's day Jacob and his sister Marie are left behind in the woods by their unemployed father.
