- DirectorJohn WatersStarsSonny BonoRuth BrownDivineA 'pleasantly plump' teenager teaches 1962 Baltimore a thing or two about integration after landing a spot on a local TV dance show.Watched in November 2010
Long before John Travolta did it in the film version of the stage version which is based on this film, we had Divine dressing up as Edna Turnblad. We also had the delicious eye of John Waters directing it which makes it a far better film already.
This original telling of the film is pretty much the same as the newer version, albeit that this isn't a musical, so the characters don't sing, though there is plenty of swinging 60's hits throughout. Though musicals can be fun and the 2007 version of the film is enjoyable, there is something more so about the 1988 version.
The cast are great and thanks to John Waters, we have some wonderful appearances including a great one from Debbie Harry. Ricki Lake in her pre Ricki Lake Show days is brilliant as the 'pleasantly plump' Tracey who wins the heart of Baltimore and helps end segregation through dancing.
The film starts with quite a jovial nature, with its garish colours and great dance sequences. It never becomes too John Waters, so never becomes too stupid. And later when the race segregation becomes a main plot point it never becomes too serious, without taking away the message. Some may find it over the top, but I think its actually well balanced: though there are some funny moments, I wouldn't describe it as a laugh a minute film. But it's not about that, the fact that it's bursting with energy and is a joy to watch makes the film what it is.
The stage musical version of this is a great theatrical experience, especially when Edna is transformed from dull to beautiful and the 2007 version tried to capture some of that magic, but whilst John Travolta did an admirable job as Edna nothing can match the brilliance or indeed toned down version of Divine. If you want to do Hairspray, then this is the version to go to. - DirectorAdam ShankmanStarsJohn TravoltaQueen LatifahNikki BlonskyPleasantly plump teenager Tracy Turnblad teaches 1962 Baltimore a thing or two about integration after landing a spot on a local TV dance show. It's a nice try in updated the classic for 'modern audiences' but it falls far from the original in terms of kitsch and fun.

Really marvellous South Korean film that falls somewhere in between fantasy and horror, comparisons to Pan's Labyrinth are coming thick and fast. And whilst that is quite true, this film holds itself utterly. It is blessed with fine performances throughout, but the children are just astonishing. The early scenes with the use of vivid colours and very stylised approach had a Tim Burtonesque feel to it. The film quickly moves along with compelling storytelling that gives the audience everything: humour, fantasy(loved the little toy flying around when Eun-soon told his fairytale), but it never gets too fantastical or indeed verges towards too much gore and horror, though there are some close calls. Even the ending is near perfection and almost beautiful and if you want to interpret it, the message is loud and clear. - DirectorM. Night ShyamalanStarsMark WahlbergZooey DeschanelJohn LeguizamoA science teacher, his wife, and a young girl struggle to survive a plague that causes those infected to commit suicide.i didn't mind this - if you suspend belief and go with it. But it sure is stupid.
- DirectorThomas BalmèsStarsPeyangkiKinley OmAp Kinley DorjiIn 1999, King Jigme Wangchuck approved the use of television and Internet throughout the largely undeveloped nation of Bhutan, assuring the masses that rapid development was synonymous with the "gross national happiness" of his country, a term he himself coined. Director Thomas Balmès's film Happiness begins at the end of this process as Laya, the last remaining village tucked away within the Himalayan kingdom, becomes enmeshed in roads, electricity, and cable television. Through the eyes of an eight-year-old monk impatient with prayer and eager to acquire a TV set, we witness the seeds of this seismic shift sprouting during a three-day journey from the outskirts of Laya to the thriving capital of Thimphu. It is here the young boy discovers cars, toilets, colorful club lights, and countless other elements of modern life for the first time.MIFF.

Kudrow is very good.
- DirectorGeorge MillerWarren ColemanJudy MorrisStarsElijah WoodBrittany MurphyHugh JackmanInto the world of the Emperor Penguins, who find their soul mates through song, a penguin is born who cannot sing. But he can tap dance something fierce!Ok, so some of the animation is just superb, incredible in some places, but this was an over hyped, over long film, that bored me for the most part and left me slightly disturbed by the end. I found it odd that real humans were interacting with animated penguins and that penguins were dancing and the humans danced with them(yes I know it's a film....but...). I was also concerned by the incredible heavy "treat the environment better" message which suddenly became the focus of the film near the end. Isn't this meant to be a kids film and not an Al Gore Doco??? Flushed Away was much better.
- DirectorMike LeighStarsSally HawkinsAlexis ZegermanSamuel RoukinA look at a few chapters in the life of Poppy, a cheery, colorful, North London schoolteacher whose optimism tends to exasperate those around her.Fantastic film. You can understand that some would get annoyed by Hawkins, but I adored her, the ever optimist.

This must go down as contender for longest film title although I think Borat may claim that crown. So we are nearly at a close! 7 books and 7 films later with one left and finally we can put Harry Potter to bed for a good nights sleep. He needs it.
I'm not even going to begin to explain the plot in this latest installment, part 1 of 2, that the seventh and final book has been stretched over. The film is enjoyable, with some great sequences, lashings of special effects all of which look great on the big screen, a stellar cast of Britain's acting elite and hints of comedy and romance as Harry Potter and pals battle on towards what we can only expect will be an epic showdown with Voldermort.
I read the first four books, but lost interest and haven't ventured further, but I have seen all the films (although I can't remember all of them enough to rate here) and whilst my interest isn't exactly enormous, I feel duty bound to see them through to the end, after all I've come this far. For true fans this will be enough to excite just as much as previous films and no doubt frustrate that it's been split into two with most having to wait until June 2011 for the final installment. For me, with my mild level of interest there is alot to enjoy, but because I'm not a huge fan I struggled at times trying to keep up with it all, who's who, what everything means, not that it's excessive difficult to understand. My other issue is that the film is just so long, at two and half hours it pushes my limits for watching a film, so goodness knows how younger fans cope.
.
Still, that aside the film looks wonderful and there is something er, magical about taking a ride with Harry Potter et al. The rich imagination of J.K. Rowling is vividly brought to life with multiply Harry Potters in one scene to people flushing themselves down the loo to get to the ministry. It's for the most part all good fun, a little darker now as the story reaches it's climax, but overall it keeps as the saying goes the magic alive. - DirectorDavid YatesStarsDaniel RadcliffeEmma WatsonRupert GrintHarry, Ron, and Hermione search for Voldemort's remaining Horcruxes in their effort to destroy the Dark Lord as the final battle rages on at Hogwarts.Maintains the story well and wraps it all up. - DirectorXavier DolanStarsXavier DolanMonia ChokriNiels SchneiderThe story of three close friends who are involved in a love-triangle.Watched in April 2011
Francis is gay and his close friend Marie is straight, two little things that threaten to tear the friendship apart when at a dinner party they meet 'Adonis' like Nicholas. Both feel an instant attraction to the blond curly haired beauty who seems to exude sexuality, passion and an artistic creative side. The attraction grows as the trio becomes firm friends, spending more and more time together and Francis and Maris both try to impress Nicholas by dressing like his favorite movie stars or hanging out in places he might be and then pretending it's just chance when they meet.
Nicholas though never states a defined interest in either playing ambiguously towards the two leading them to have little idea where they stand. As the friendship progress's the two sleep with partners in the hope of gaining some sexual satisfaction elsewhere when they can't have it where they really want it and all the time the pangs of jealousy grow stronger between the two as each bids for Nicholas' affections.
This second feature from Canadian Xavier Dolan is a far cry from his debut (I Killed My Mother), which I found a grating and dire experience. In contrast this is a brilliant portrait of unrequited love that perhaps anyone can relate to. As a film maker, there is no doubt that Dolan had talent and in this film it really shines. The film is as frustrating though as it is funny and real; Dolan populates his film with beautiful 'trendsetters' who at times look like a bunch of espresso swilling bourgeois idiots and that I found annoying and there are times when it falters on some cliched territory. Yet this is outweighed by fine performances, great camera work, including some nice slow motion shots and a brilliant visual impact with it's array of costumes and in some sequences bright colour. Dolan also douses his film with some vibrant and perfect musical choices that at times add to the realism of the plot.
And it's that plot that works so well; everyone has felt an attraction to someone and gone out of their way to 'impress' them in the hope they might make something unrequited become less so. The ability to be able to relate makes for an at times painful but also very very funny film and whilst it does have some faults this is a really solid and wonderful film. - DirectorPascal ChaumeilStarsRomain DurisVanessa ParadisJulie FerrierAlex and his sister run a business designed to break up relationships. They are hired by a rich man to break up the wedding of his daughter. The only problem is that they only have one week to do so.Watched in February 2011
Alex (Roman Duris) gets paid by people to help break up relationships and is very good at it, setting up elaborate situations to woo the woman in question to make her see that she is unhappy with her current partner before leaving. Alex's new mission involves Juliette (Vanessa Paradis) who is about to marry a rich British man and her father just doesn't think her's right for her. With days to go before the wedding Alex heads to Monte Carlo to woo Juliette only to discover she's a bit of a tough cookie, but also a babe. Can he manage to break this relationship up or is he going to actually going to fall for her?
This light romantic French comedy is alot of fun. Duris and Paradis are great together, with Paradis being more cute and teeny tiny than you could imagine; she gets to strut around in some wonderful clothes and the film plays out in a gorgeous looking sun bathed Monte Carlo all of which makes this a wonderful looking film.
The story is a bit silly, but it's quite fun with Alex pretending to like all the things Juliette likes which means he has to sing along to Wham!, eat Roquefort cheese for breakfast and learn the dance moves from Dirty Dancing. These are some of the more funnier moments in the film and whilst the film isn't laugh a minute it is charming and easy pleasing throughout that has that certain French element to it that doesn't translate in American remakes. There are some downsides, such as the arrival of Juliette's old friend who is just annoying and there is little screen time for Andrew Lincoln who plays the soon to be husband. However as a light rom com this does a very good job, even if it does leave you with 'Wake me up before you go-go' in your head. - DirectorDavid MirkinStarsSigourney WeaverJennifer Love HewittGene HackmanA mother and daughter con team seduce and scam wealthy men. This is a woeful film, starts well, just descends into nothing.
- DirectorPaul FeigStarsSandra BullockMichael McDonaldMelissa McCarthyAn uptight FBI Special Agent is paired with a foul-mouthed Boston cop to take down a ruthless drug lord.Nice little cop comedy. Bullock and McCarthy do their thing well.
- DirectorMichael LehmannStarsWinona RyderChristian SlaterShannen DohertyAt Westerburg High where cliques rule, jocks dominate and all the popular girls are named Heather, it's going to take a Veronica and mysterious new kid to give teen angst a body count.Watched in September 2010
What ever happened to Winona Ryder and Christian Slater? No, really, what ever happened to them? I know they've done work since this film, but it's hard to remember. Still, maybe that's the way it should be as Heathers is a hugely enjoyable film.
Made way back in the 80's, it's been a long time since I watched this but what fun I had revisiting it. The story is brilliant, if not a little stupid, but darkly humourous and full of satire, doped up cops and parents who ask 'How was the first day of school after the suicide?' before offering pate.
The film is laced with some superb lines: 'I love my dead gay son' or the use of 'very' as in 'That is so VERY'. It is twisted in it's humour and I can see the influence it potentially has had on twisted TV series Strangers With Candy. The characters are full of wonderful prime stereotypes, but unlike similar modern high school films, they all work brilliantly and are played by an excellent cast.
Having said that the one down side to the cast is Slater who seems to think he's Jack Nicholson, which after a few lines became intensely annoying. That aside there is so much to enjoy, the dark humour and satire is there from start to finish and whilst 80's fashions were pretty shocking, Heathers is another wonderful example of the brilliance of film making of that era. It is so VERY. - DirectorTom TykwerStarsCate BlanchettGiovanni RibisiRemo GironeA woman takes the law into her own hands after police ignore her pleas to arrest the man responsible for her husband's death, and finds herself not only under arrest for murder but falling in love with an officer.Excellent drama. - DirectorMona AchacheStarsJosiane BalaskoGarance Le GuillermicTogo IgawaThe life of a determined young girl is changed when she befriends her building's concierge, a solitary woman who is more than what she seems.Watched in August 2010
I really enjoyed this French film, a little more than I expected. It center's around 3 main characters who inhabit an apartment building. Paloma is an 11yr old who is fed up with her rich family and decides to kill herself, Renee is the buildings caretaker, slightly dour, but on the inside a warm wonderful person and then the is Mr. Ozu, a new tenant who woos Renee.
The three become close with Renee as the center. She is wonderfully played, at one point even the character states she is the stereotype of a caretaker, yet whilst she is dour and seemingly grumpy, she is rather charming and gradually with her time with Mr. Ozu and Paloma she opens up and comes out of her shell. It's a subtle transformation, but lovely. Her relationship with Mr.Ozu is also lovely, again subtle as they both take steps to get to know each other.
The film is full of charm, the pop up card Paloma makes, the array of cats, Renee's first experience with the music playing toilet or the return of the goldfish. It is also quite sad, Renee is so lacking in confidence she can only put herself down and it takes alot for her to release that Mr. Ozu is an honest man. There are also some nice moments where animation is used, I especially like the one where Renee reads as books fly around like birds.
The film shows an interesting contrast of class aswell, the rich, bourgeois family that Paloma belongs to and hates, is the complete opposite to who Renee is, infact Paloma's mother is unaware who 'Renee' is. Two different worlds living side by side, with Mr. Ozu providing a bridge for Renee to cross.
I was really taken by the film and by it's charm, though it's not the same sort of cutesy charm we say in 'Amelie', it's a more subtle charm, which makes the film more enjoyable and makes you want to see inside these peoples lives. It, does end tragically, so much so, that I was quite taken aback. But it is a fine film with much to enjoy. - DirectorJohn Cameron MitchellStarsJohn Cameron MitchellMiriam ShorStephen TraskA gender-queer punk-rock singer from East Berlin tours the U.S. with her band as she tells her life story and follows the former lover/band-mate who stole her songs.Stunning film. Not only very funny, it's very moving. The music of course is a another story.

Hell and Back Again is a cinematically revolutionary film that asks and answers these questions with a power and intimacy no previous film about the conflict in Afghanistan has been able to achieve. It is a masterpiece in the cinema of war.Interesting enough, but highlights the evil of war. And I don't understand why people want to go back.

- DirectorClint EastwoodStarsMatt DamonCécile de FranceBryce Dallas HowardAn American construction worker, a French journalist and a London school boy set out on a spiritual journey after death touches their lives in different ways.Watched in February 2011
A French couple are wrapping up their beach holiday and the wife, Marie, goes to get gifts from the market when a massive tsunami strikes sweeping her through the streets. She is left for dead and has what appears to be a vision of the after life. Miraculously she survives, but the event changes her outlook. In the US, George (Matt Damon) is forced into giving a reading for a friend of his brother and reluctantly he does so contacting the spirit of the mans wife. In London twin brothers make the best out of life despite their mothers constant drinking and then tragedy strieks when one of the boys is killed and his mother is sent to rehab and he sets out to try and search for something beyond.
Hereafter brings these three stories together as each goes on jounries of discovery. Marie, a respected journalist tries to understand what she saw, George tries to get away from talking to the dead and attempts to find love, whilst young Marcus is at a loss without his twin and wants to find a way of contacting him from beyond. As a film about death, it is remarkable that there is no emotional connection with these people or indeed with the whole film and whether you believe in the notion of the afterlife, death itself is a confronting prospect. Some elements of the film do work better than others; George's search for romance which leads him to cooking classes is nicely done and there is a stronger emotional connection to the story of Marcus than the other two.
Director Clint Eastwood has made some great films recently including Letters From Iwo Jima and Gran Torino, but this doesn't feel like an Eastwood film. The segments feels utterly disjointed for the most part, until the three characters come together at the book fair. It also has the look and feel of a TV movie; the special effects in the film may have been nominated for an Oscar, but for me on even on the big screen they really looked like special effects, especially the tsunami scene, which looked liked it was no more than effects used on a Nat Geo program. Instead of just focusing on the effects of the events on these people, we have brief moments where the afterlife is shown and it would have been better to leave these moments out and leave it too the imagination.
Performances are okay, with Matt Damon the best of the three, but it doesn't help a film that doesn't let the audience connect, despite the fact that it's subject matter should have us fascinated by notions of life, death and beyond. - DirectorMichael HanekeStarsDaniel AuteuilJuliette BinocheMaurice BénichouA married couple is terrorized by a series of surveillance videotapes left on their front porch.I don't know where to begin with this film! Yet another film that has totally blown me away. I was mesmerised by it.I loved how nothing was really answered and you are left questioning what you know and what you don't know. The scene where the guy slashes his throat, made me scream out "oh my god" and clasp my hand to my mouth, a response I was overwhelmed by and I had to pause the dvd. Further more, reading about the film on the internet, I was drawn into the ideas and conspiracies that surround the film: such as that the director Michael Haneke planted the video tapes himself. And there is also many mentions on forums of the appearance of what seems to be the same man in the background to many scenes, and whether he has anything to do with the story. It is utterly intriguing. I cannot wait to see it again!

- DirectorMel BrooksStarsMel BrooksMadeline KahnCloris LeachmanA psychiatrist with intense acrophobia (fear of heights) goes to work for a mental institution run by doctors who appear to be crazier than their patients, and have secrets that they are willing to commit murder to keep.Watched in May 2011
Mel Brook's homage to Alfred Hitchcock came with high expectations, but left me with, er, high anxiety. I adore Hitchcock and am gradually working my way through his vast filmography; my experiences with Mel Brooks is a little hit and miss, but this does review well among his films, so what could be worse?
The film felt very flat and the humour was either not funny or lost on me, even the Hitchcock references seemed at times not very obvious - maybe my concentration was lost?! There are some quite funny moments, but the real saving feature is when Madeline Kahn appears. A superb comic actor, Kahn, provides some moment of brilliance and she is simply the highlight for me of the entire film.
It seems a shame however that this failed to really tickle my funny bone; after not enjoying Young Frankenstein and now this I wonder if Mel Brooks is just not my cup of tea...Love the film poster though. - DirectorPedro AlmodóvarStarsVictoria AbrilMarisa ParedesMiguel BoséA singer returns after 15 years abroad to perform in Madrid and finds her 27 y.o. daughter married to one of her mom's ex-lovers.One of Almodovar's finest.

- DirectorUrsula MeierStarsIsabelle HuppertOlivier GourmetAdélaïde LerouxLife for an isolated rural family is upended when a major highway next to their property, constructed 10 years before but apparently abandoned, is finally opened.MIFF 2009Watched in July 2009
Brilliantly played out drama of a family living next to an unused highway, almost in isolation only to find their world turn upside down when the highway reopens. The cast is so fine in their roles, Isabelle Huppert is superb, playing what is really a normal family having to face sudden change, to accept it or avoid it. The onslaught of the highway is gradual and shocking, the scenes where the constuction workers start tarring the road is so overwhelming in this peaceful world, it's as if aliens have arrived. As the highway becomes busier and nosier the family do even more to stop the onslaught of noise and pollution. The film could be interpreted to have many meanings, but for me this was a statement as to the bond and strength family can have. My only fault, yes I'm going to find fault is the amount of nudity. I find it odd that a grown daughter would happily bath naked in front of her parents. During this period, Bill learns about sex, death, love, hypocrisy, and the faults of adults as he prowls the ruins of bombed houses.Watched in February 2011
I've not seen this British film since I was younger, when it left quite an impression on me presenting the war through the eyes of a young boy which made it seem like alot of fun, rummaging through ruins and going to live in the country.
It is a very fine film, one that follows the Rowan family as WWII hits. 9yr old Bill, his older and younger sisters and Mum and Dad, live in semi detached-ville and as the war approaches the kids seem oblivious to it all, even when there father goes off to fight. The effect of the war takes its toll early in one of the films more powerful scenes as Mum decides that sending the children to relatives in Australia is the best option, but amongst the chaos of the train station, she realises she simply can't let them go.
As the war trundles on, sirens indicating the imminent arrival of German bombers signals the family to safety into their outside bunker or under the stairs. The fear at full mast as the bombs drop closer and closer to them and all thoughts are on whether they will be spared. They are time and time again, whilst others aren't so lucky, with the kids at one point questioning a young girl who stands motionless outside her ruined house that serves as a tomb for her mother, the children unaware of the magnitude of the event ask her if she'd like to come and play. She says no.
Among the devastation of war we have Bill, a likable kid who joins a 'gang', watched his older sister romance in secret a Canadian soldier and watches in amazement along with other residents as a German pilot comes down among the Brussels sprouts. Mum, Grace alone with the children seeks company with her male friend, but whilst nothing happens it results in a terrifying moment when they return from a day trip to find the house has burnt to the ground. Aware, this could have destroyed more than just the house, she doesn't allow anything to come of it. Homeless they are forced to move to her parents in the country, where summer beckons for the children and the war itself seems a million miles away.
Being mostly told through the eyes of young Billy, the seriousness of the war almost plays second fiddle to Bill's almost light hearted interpretation of events. It is a very British film and an utterly charming one that manages to still remind how terrible the war was, but how life in general still went on. It also reminds how the little things were altogether much bigger, such as watching a rogue air balloon crash into houses or the arrival of a tin of jam. It also takes a look at absent parents. this is a film that whilst it had some moments to enjoy, I found it very difficult to emotionally connect to the main couple, and so as I sat watching the pain and anguish he went through as he tried to deal with the break up, I found myself caring very little about him. The cast though works together very well, and for me the film is saved by the scenes with Laura Linney, in what is really a cameo role, she steals the scenes. I’m afraid I couldn’t help think this is an examination of Ethan Hawkes relationship with Uma Thurman and its subsequent break down. I also question many things, such as where does she get her money from? Her mother? Small things but it didn’t help make this a good film.

This is a fine gem of a film. Made in South Korea in the 60's it is unlike anything you would expect from that region, it is both utterly Western and yet Korean aswell. Stunning in it's black and white with some remarkable performances, the film has a delightfully twisted and perhaps even absurd plot, but this works to make it even more of delight.
The film is full of brilliant twists and turns that pile upon each other, perhaps had this been made in Hollywood, it would have been over the top and I can imagine it be pushed to the limits of cliche and stupidity. This is not the case with this film, whilst many in the audience seemed to find it all very funny and with the scenarios playing out it's perhaps a little understandable, but I didn't find it funny, more astounding that the film manages to get away with a story so bizarre.
It is full of great performances, especially from Eun-Shim Lee who plays the maid, but all are great. Couple this with some beautiful camera work and you have a film that looks wonderful and is a joy to watch with a terrifically entertaining story. - DirectorIm Sang-sooStarsJeon Do-yeonLee Jung-jaeYoun Yuh-jungA man's affair with his family's housemaid leads to dark consequences.A remake of the 1960's film, which I saw a few years ago. The place is a polar research station on an island in the Arctic Ocean, inhabited now only by Sergei and Pavel. One day when Sergei is out angling, Pavel picks up a radio message that he daren't communicate.Watched in April 2011
Two men, younger Pavel and senior and rougher Sergei are stationed at a remote meteorological station in the Russian Arctic. With nothing to do, Pavel listens to music and takes readings of equipment while Sergei keeps to himself and relays information via two-way radio. One day Sergei goes fishing only for Pavel to be informed that Sergei’s family is dead and that he must make contact immediately. Perhaps scared of Sergei’s reaction to this news, Pavel doesn’t tell him, which sets off reactions from both men that break their monotonous lives.
Set amidst the stark bleak landscapes of the Arctic the film looks amazing. And with the weight of a whole film upon them the two actors do a remarkable job. It is however an immensely slow film, that despite it’s first half with its hints of humour as we discover these two men, becomes at times a real drag. As Pavel makes his choice to not break the news to Sergei, so the film changes, yet it never contrasts enough with the first part and the actions of Pavel become more and more absurd, I found myself really struggling to understand why he would choose to behave this way; if it was out of fear of Sergei’s reaction, that seems unfounded as, while rough nut, Sergei is never more than a grumpy man doing a job in a desolate world.
All of this means that what should become a tension filled thriller playing on the mundane existence these men lead, becomes a test of patience as you wonder why anyone would behave that way and had they not there still would have been the potential for a good film, instead you get one that doesn’t end soon enough and at well over 2 hours it wasn’t soon enough. - DirectorKevin MacdonaldStarsSaoirse RonanTom HollandGeorge MacKayAn American girl, sent to the English countryside to stay with relatives, finds love and purpose while fighting for her survival as war envelops the world around her.Likable, but difficult to get involved and questioned too many things.

I was reluctant to watch this after my recent lackluster enjoyment of another animated feature, Toy Story 3, but based on some good reviews I felt it was a suitable lazing on the sofa DVD.
It didn't start well though: within moments of the main character Hiccup speaking, I thought it odd he had an American accent, which became odder when he explained he was a viking and the majority of the other characters had thick Scottish accent. it was so annoying infact I wondered if I could sit through it and again I know it's a kid's film, but come on! You'll be glad to know that I fought hard and got over it enough to enjoy the film.
And the film is very enjoyable: basically it's about a community terrorized by dragons and one boy's desire to fit in and please his father. He tries to kill a dragon, only to befriend it and learn the secrets of dragons along the way and bringing the terror to an and and winning the approval of his father and of course he gets the girl. HURRAH!
The film is pretty entertaining, even if the dragon Hiccup befriends has clearly been based on the style of a cat, which at times was a little annoying, infact all the dragons have cat characteristics: dragons purring? Come on! That aside, it's pretty straight forward as explained above. The standout feature though is the animation, on DVD it looks great, so I would imagine on the big screen it would have looked amazing. The colours are lush, attention to detail is wonderful-hairs on peoples arms for example or the glint in a dragon's eyes, all add to the film's qualities. It makes for a enjoyable viewing experience and whilst it failed to make me laugh much, it was more exciting to watch than the above mentioned animated feature which felt a little flat. - DirectorRob EpsteinJeffrey FriedmanStarsJames FrancoTodd RotondiJon PrescottAs Allen Ginsberg talks about his life and art, his most famous poem is illustrated in animation while the obscenity trial of the work is dramatized.SIFF 2010Watched in June 2010
I've never read Howl or really have had much interest in Allen Ginsberg, but having seen this delight of a film, things have changed.
The film takes a look at several key moments in Ginsbergs life. In B&W we see Ginsberg recite his poem Howl: there are also insights into his friendships with Jack Kerouac, Neal Cassady and his relationship with Peter Orlovsky. The reading of the poem is segmented throughout the film and in between these segments we see Ginsberg being interviewed, whilst we never see the interviewer, we do see Ginsberg talk about his life. The other main element is the trial of Howl, which was deemed obscene. All these aspects combine well and it never feels disjointed; they are nicely contrasted and offer great insights into the life of Ginsberg.
Add to this some wonderful animation that plays during much of the recital of Howl; it creates something of a reality to the poem and made it even more stunning and graphic and tragic and beautiful. The trial scenes are fascinating with the constant questioning by the prosecution as to what certain lines or words meant. And how wonderful the judge, who seemed to have made his descision well before the trial was over. Thank goodness for him.
James Franco plays Ginsberg and does so well, although he doesn't have too much to do, he is mostly either being interviewed or reciting; but it is in this he impresses, the passion, the intensity of the piece shines through: the ending of Howl, known as 'Footnote to Howl' is brilliantly spoken and I found it hugely emotional. The film has a slight doco feel to it at times, but it is otherwise an absorbing and wonderfully told account. - DirectorMartin ScorseseStarsAsa ButterfieldChloë Grace MoretzChristopher LeeIn 1931 Paris, an orphan living in the walls of a train station gets wrapped up in a mystery involving his late father and an automaton.nice film. - DirectorTom SixStarsDieter LaserWinter WilliamsAshlynn YennieA mad scientist kidnaps and mutilates a trio of tourists in order to reassemble them into a human centipede, created by stitching their mouths to each others' rectums.Watched in December 2010
This film has something of a reputation, mainly because described as one the grossest film stories ever though of. Not that that is enough to out me off, but I was a little apprehensive about this one, even if it takes alot to gross me out.
Two American girls on holiday in Europe break down in the middle of nowhere at night and of course go searching for a house. Inexplicably they suddenly start walking through the woods, but of course come across the house of a mad doctor. He pretends to help them before drugging them and with a third abductee is proceeds to turn them into a human centipede by stitching their mouths to their anus's and changing the knee bone so they can't stand up. He does all this because he's crazy and he wants a 'pet' and after he tried the same thing on his pet dogs and they died he starts again, with humans. Of course the police come snooping and there is a fairly straight forward outcome. And apparently there's to be a sequel. Good times!
Firstly the film actually looks okay, I was expecting a really low budget, but the production values are quite impressive. The actor playing the doctor does a good job as a crazy although the brief lines the two women have show them to be probably the only actresses willing to play the roles, i.e. not very good ones. The whole concept of the story, the making of this 'creature' is, as discussed, one of the grossest ideas you'll likely to see screen and that's saying something with films like SAW. It's toilet humour gone wrong and teenage boys would no doubt revel in the idea. On screen it's presented with less graphic nature than perhaps you would expect, the mouth to anus is cleverly concealed by bandages and infact at times there heads seem to high to be connected. It is a disgusting notion and this becomes more disgusting, when the 'head' need to defecate... but even then I was expecting all out grossness, but while it's pretty nasty, it could have been alot worse. The fact that the film suggest more than it shows, works perhaps in it's favour. Infact it all seems quite dull and boring.
It is a pretty bad film, although it did for me pose the question that if you survived that, how you would live, psychologically? I also couldn't help feel for the three actors who played the centipede, I mean what a role, to be on your hands and knees tied to the person infront with you mouth against their butt. Let's hope no one had curry the night before!!This is likely to be sick inducing for most and gross out the rest, but don't let the hype get you: it is bad in so many ways, but it's certainly not as bad as you can imagine. - DirectorEran RiklisStarsMark IvanirGuri AlfiNoah SilverA tragi-comedy centered on the HR manager of Israel's largest industrial bakery, who sets out to save the reputation of his business and prevent the publication of a defamatory article.failed to get into this.
