- DirectorPeter BergStarsChristian SlaterDaniel SternCameron DiazA prostitute is killed during a bachelor party and the attendees turn on each other as the wedding approaches.1/1-Everybody in this movie was crazy. And sick. By the end, I was just puzzled.
- DirectorEric LaneuvilleStarsDenzel WashingtonLynn WhitfieldAkosua BusiaHe risked it all to make the grade.1/11-I liked this movie about a high school principal, firm but mild mannered, brave but not militant, and a bit more sane than other archetypes in "urban" Hollywood movies. Denzel at his best.
- DirectorAngela BassettStarsYaya DaCostaArlen EscarpetaYolonda RossA chronicle of Whitney Houston's rise to fame and turbulent relationship with husband Bobby Brown.1/24-Alot of emphasis on Bobby, not enough Whitney to me.
- DirectorGina Prince-BythewoodStarsSanaa LathanWesley SnipesMichael ImperioliA couple in the midst of a tumultuous relationship fight to stay together.1/31-Saw this on TVOne on a Saturday night. I don't think the two are a good combination at all.
- DirectorClint EastwoodStarsJohn Lloyd YoungErich BergenMichael LomendaThe story of four young men from the wrong side of the tracks in New Jersey who came together to form the iconic 1960s rock group The Four Seasons.3/29- A rather bleak, dreary, boring re-telling of an otherwise exciting story.
- DirectorAndrew StevensStarsDrew WatersFarah WhiteTom MadenA contemporary retelling of the parable of the prodigal son set in the world of Texas high school basketball.4/18- I liked this movie, but it was more about the message than the movie. Good movie though.
- DirectorTim StoryStarsKevin HartGabrielle UnionWendi McLendon-CoveyAll the couples are back for a wedding in Las Vegas, but plans for a romantic weekend go awry when their various misadventures get them into some compromising situations that threaten to derail the big event.4/18-Fun to watch, the women were all beautiful.
- DirectorSteve McQueenStarsChiwetel EjioforMichael Kenneth WilliamsMichael FassbenderIn the antebellum United States, Solomon Northup, a free Black man from upstate New York, is abducted and sold into slavery.5/2-Awesome, better than I thought it would be.
- DirectorSam MillerStarsTaraji P. HensonIdris ElbaLeslie BibbAn unstable escaped convict terrorizes a woman who is alone with her two children.5/9-Excellent and suspense filled, but just too short for me. I love Taraji though.
- DirectorTodd PhillipsStarsBradley CooperZach GalifianakisEd HelmsWhen one of their own is kidnapped by an angry gangster, the Wolf Pack must track down Mr. Chow, who has escaped from prison and is on the run.5/9-I loved this, surprisingly funny and really caught my attention. And I am not even into this Hangover series.
- DirectorAntoine FuquaStarsDenzel WashingtonMarton CsokasChloë Grace MoretzA man who believes he has put his mysterious past behind him cannot stand idly by when he meets a young girl under the control of ultra-violent Russian gangsters.5/30-So so action flick, ok, but Denzel seems to be going through the motions.
- DirectorCharles MurrayStarsJason BondMarco DapperMartin EliasA grieving widow summons her dead husband back from the grave with disastrous results.6/6-Decent effort about a woman's "man candy" husband coming back from the dead and adding more misery to her than when he was alive.
- DirectorJessy TerreroStars50 CentVal KilmerAnnaLynne McCordAngel is released from prison and is reunited with his friend Rich who helps him smuggle weapons in a gun-running ring. But Detroit police and the FBI have declared war on arms smuggling.6/27-Aside from "Power", 50 is getting boring.
- DirectorDavid FincherStarsBen AffleckRosamund PikeNeil Patrick HarrisWith his wife's disappearance having become the focus of an intense media circus, a man sees the spotlight turned on him when it's suspected that he may not be innocent.6/28-Pretty engaging, but whats with Tyler Perry and all the cuss words?
- DirectorJean-Claude La MarreStarsRobert Ri'chardTyson BeckfordDeRay DavisLife for a struggling college student changes in an instant when he meets the owner of a male strip club who convinces him to give amateur night a whirl.7/25-Despite the main characters name, despite the hype, this is nothing like Magic Mike 1 or 2. This movie is more like Ice Cube's Players Club in reverse with a male character instead of a woman. This was pretty brief, flashy and simple. Nothing for you if you are not into man candy type stuff. This was made for ladies who like chocolate man candy and if you like that and you see this on a wide screen this is quite a treat. To others it will just be mediocre at best.
- DirectorIce CubeStarsLisaRaye McCoyDick Anthony WilliamsJudyann ElderA woman must contend with rival strippers and her boss in an attempt to make a legitimate living.7/26-For some reason, the day after BET showed Chocolate City, TV One (or was it Centric?) showed this. A connection, perhaps? I dunno.
- DirectorRod DanielStarsMichael J. FoxJames HamptonSusan UrsittiAn ordinary high school student discovers that his family has an unusual pedigree.8/2-Can't help it, Michael J Fox was one of the greatest "teen" actors of the 80s. Even though he wasn't really a teen.
- DirectorJohnny RemoStarsRandy WayneJohn SchneiderRosanna ArquetteAfter growing up with his single mom, skateboarder Caleb, 18, finds his busy, rich architect dad. He contacts him, when his mom's hospitalized with cancer. He joins a skateboard competition, when rent's up.8/8-Lots of great skateboard tricks and an inspirational message make you ignore the fake angry scowl of the main actor who is supposed to be an angry young skateboard dude and a predictable plot.
- DirectorMike BarkerStarsPierce BrosnanMaria BelloGerard ButlerA perfect family's dynamic is ruined by a kidnapper's brutally efficient plot.8/8-Fast paced thriller! Saw this On Demand and was pretty surprised at how good it was since it was a somewhat random pick. However, the end was pretty predictable but it was a nice ride.
- DirectorMichaël R. RoskamStarsTom HardyNoomi RapaceJames GandolfiniBob Saginowski finds himself at the center of a robbery gone awry and entwined in an investigation that digs deeply into the neighborhood's past where friends, families, and foes all work together to make a living--no matter the cost.8/8-OK urban flick which was amusing, not what I expected but pretty good.
- DirectorJustin ReardonStarsChris EvansMichelle MonaghanTopher GraceUnrequited love motivates a guy to write about his experiences.8/9-Short but cool spoof of the "Romcom" genre. Saw on Starz late night, makes great "midnite movie"!
- DirectorF. Gary GrayStarsO'Shea Jackson Jr.Corey HawkinsJason MitchellThe rap group NWA emerges from the mean streets of Compton in Los Angeles, California, in the mid-1980s and revolutionizes Hip Hop culture with their music and tales about life in the hood.8/14-The best hip hop flick I have seen since Krush Groove. Watching this on opening day was the event of the year for me!
- DirectorAlton GlassStarsTaran BraxtonAshanna BriJermaine CrawfordWhen four high school best friends' lives are dramatically changed on the night of a near fatal accident, eighteen years later they're reunited, only to discover that a set of past and present secrets will alter the course of their futures forever.8/16-Bland movie I saw on Centric on the Sunday afternoon. Didn't feel like watching NFL preseason.
- DirectorJeremy GarelickStarsKevin HartJosh GadKaley CuocoTwo weeks shy of his wedding, a socially awkward guy enters into a charade by hiring the owner of a company that provides best men for grooms in need.9/5-Didn't know what to expect but this was really funny!
- DirectorJason LapeyreStarsSam KindsethDylan EverettTiera SkovbyeAfter being cast in the hit teen sitcom Saved by the Bell (1989), six unknown young actors must deal with the Hollywood spotlight and the challenges of growing up under public scrutiny.9/6-As a Saved By the Bell fan, this was really interesting and captured that era perfectly, answered alot of questions and also showed alot of surprising behind the scenes stuff.
- DirectorChris BuckJennifer LeeStarsKristen BellIdina MenzelJonathan GroffFearless optimist Anna teams up with rugged mountain man Kristoff and his loyal reindeer Sven in an epic journey to find Anna's sister Elsa, whose icy powers have trapped the kingdom of Arendelle in eternal winter.9/6-First time watching this! It was really good. The Frozen theme song is awesome.
- DirectorWill GluckStarsQuvenzhané WallisCameron DiazJamie FoxxA foster kid who lives with her mean foster mom sees her life change when business tycoon and New York City mayoral candidate Will Stacks makes a thinly-veiled campaign move and takes her in.9/6-As an Annie fan I was pretty impressed. That girl playing her is super talented, and deserved the part.
- DirectorTyler PerryStarsTyler PerryGabrielle UnionThandiwe NewtonBusinessman Wesley Deeds is jolted out of his scripted life when he meets Lindsey, a single mother who works on the cleaning crew in his office building.9/6-I hated this one. Tyler Perry being romantic just was off to me.
- DirectorAlexander PayneStarsJack NicholsonHope DavisDermot MulroneyA recently retired man embarks on a journey to his estranged daughter's wedding, only to discover more about himself and life than he ever expected.10/11-This was really touching, sad, grim, and to me, one of Jack's best. He didn't have much to work with but he did really well.
- DirectorTruStarsTruJamal WoolardShari Desiree EllisA modern day urban tale centered around a young man named Tru, who recently came home from jail and is fighting to stay on the right path for the sake of his son. Not too long after his release, Tru finds himself struggling to be an average man while he battles with his son's mother, the law, and the streets.11/9-Damn, this was raw....
- DirectorBille WoodruffStarsSharon LealBoris KodjoeJohn NewbergA gallerist risks her family and flourishing career when she enters into an affair with a talented painter and slowly loses control of her life.11/15-Very interesting study of sex addiction based on a novel by Zane.
- DirectorJoshua MarstonStarsCatalina Sandino MorenoGuilied LopezOrlando TobónA pregnant Colombian teenager becomes a drug mule to make some desperately-needed money for her family.11/22-Interesting look at the drug trade seen from the eyes of an impoverished teen who volunteers to be a drug mule...
- DirectorGregory NavaStarsJimmy SmitsEsai MoralesEdward James OlmosA man makes his way from Mexico to Los Angeles in the 1920s and gets married and raises a big family there. The movie follows the children until they get married and start their families in the 1960s.11/27-O My...this movie was an epic. A unexpectedly good treat ideal for Thanksgiving. Not sure why this movie isn't given the attention it deserves....
- DirectorScott CoffeyStarsEmma RobertsEvan PetersJohn CusackA naive college graduate, Amy, who believes she's destined to be a great poet, begrudgingly accepts a job in a shop while she pursues a mentorship with reclusive writer Rat Billings.11/28-I was in some type of mood and this really got my mind off what I was thinking of. A really good movie about life after graduating college, artistic integrity and validation, and doing what you have to do in this new world of big loan debts and limited job opportunities. A young poet comes of age!
- DirectorJohn CarneyStarsKeira KnightleyMark RuffaloAdam LevineA chance encounter between a down-and-out music business executive, and a young singer songwriter new to Manhattan, turns into a promising collaboration between the two talents.11/29-Ironically, this movie found randomly like the last one went hand in hand in terms of theme, this time in music! Artistic integrity, selling out, and making it in this new world of obstacles for a young artist, all explored in this movie, plus the new music business. Awesome.
- DirectorRegina Russell BanaliStarsSteven AdlerEric BakerFrankie BanaliSome bands deserve another shot, and another...and another...and another.12/12-Very interesting look at a group I haven't listened to since 1986.
- DirectorMiriam KruishoopStarsManny PerezAngel AmaralVivica A. FoxThe tragic struggle of an undocumented Latino family in Los Angeles after they have sent their eldest son to war.12/13-Very sad flick about an immigrant family and one of the sons who goes to war for the purpose of trying to attain citizenship.
- DirectorAlex KendrickStarsPriscilla C. ShirerT.C. StallingsKaren AbercrombieA seemingly perfect family looks to fix their problems with the help of Miss Clara, an older, wiser woman.12/19-I thought this was great! Minimalist but realistic look at everyday people and their struggles and how faith and prayer changes things. A great movie with answers for these troubled times.
- DirectorGuillaume CanetStarsClive OwenMarion CotillardBilly CrudupTwo brothers on either side of the law face off over organized crime in Brooklyn during the 1970s.12/25-Started, but could not finish. Though I love Zoe and some others in this movie, I got bored with it.
- DirectorNick ParadaStarsWill ChavezBeau ManleyAlexandra MasonA college student gets involved in the wild partying lifestyle of the professional freestyle motocross world.12/30-Lifestyles of the poor and brainless, but the women in this movie are so hot! Interesting yet uneven study of Mexican American guys into some wild stuff.
- DirectorLinda MendozaStarsEduardo VerásteguiRoselyn SanchezSofía VergaraA successful executive in the cosmetic industry has three sexy girlfriends in three different states. When they decide to visit him in L.A., he's in big trouble.12/30-Three beautiful women chasing after a Ricky Martin lookalike....
- DirectorEtan CohenStarsWill FerrellKevin HartAlison BrieWhen millionaire James King is jailed for fraud and bound for San Quentin, he turns to Darnell Lewis to prep him to go behind bars.12/30-Another one of those comedies where the black guy teaches the uptight but well paid white guy how to be "down" (ie "black"), and white guy learns how to stand up for himself. Kinda along the lines of Bulworth, Bringing Down the House, Malibu's Most Wanted, and Kevin Harts other movie "The Wedding Ringer". Some might say "overkill", but I'm a Kevin Hart fan so I liked it.
