- DirectorBrian De PalmaStarsPaul WilliamsWilliam FinleyJessica HarperA disfigured composer sells his soul for the woman he loves so that she will perform his music. However, an evil record tycoon betrays him and steals his music to open his rock palace, The Paradise.I guess this just about squeezes on a sci-fi list. A bizarre musical that is so "out there" I can only describe it as Rocky Horror (without the cross-dressing) meets Phantom Of The Opera... with 70's rock music. Make of that what you will!
A great soundtrack, engaging story and just a wonderfully weird "vibe" make this a must see for anyone looking for something different. Great film! - DirectorMichael CrichtonStarsMichael DouglasRip TornGeneviève BujoldWhen a young female doctor notices an unnatural amount of comas occurring in her hospital she uncovers a horrible conspiracy.
- DirectorDouglas TrumbullStarsBruce DernCliff PottsRon RifkinIn a future where all flora is extinct on Earth, an astronaut is given orders to destroy the last of Earth's botany, kept in a greenhouse aboard a spacecraft. This is most definitely NOT a thrill-a-minute sci-fi epic!
In space, a gardener has a nervous breakdown and befriends three service droids. That pretty much it. This film's renowned for its glacial pace, and that has always made it an acquired taste. I've always been quite fond of it, however, you just need to be in the right frame of mind to watch it.
The environmental message is heartfelt and still relevant, the service droids are charming, it has some bizarrely placed (but still fitting) hippy ballads for its soundtrack, and it has a fantastic ending. - DirectorBoris SagalStarsCharlton HestonAnthony ZerbeRosalind CashDr Robert Neville has developed an experimental vaccine which makes him the only immune survivor of a biological catastrophe. A gang of homicidal mutants blame science for their condition and attempt to kill him.An entertaining post-apocalyptic drama that has aged quite badly. However, the dated 70's fashion, slang, not to mention a wonderfully out of place 60's-style score give it a lot of charm.
It has some great moments - mainly seeing Charlton Heston wander around a deserted LA - but also a few clunky ones. If it were a little bit tighter in its pacing, focus, and if the infected cult were a little less goofy it would hold up a lot better today. As is, it's a good film that's slightly meandering and a little bit silly. - DirectorBryan ForbesStarsKatharine RossPaula PrentissPeter MastersonJoanna Eberhart has come to the quaint little town of Stepford, Connecticut with her family, but soon discovers there lies a sinister truth in the all too perfect behavior of the female residents.
- DirectorRobert WiseStarsWilliam ShatnerLeonard NimoyDeForest KelleyWhen an alien spacecraft of enormous power is spotted approaching Earth, Admiral James T. Kirk resumes command of the overhauled USS Enterprise in order to intercept it.A surprisingly straight-faced and "hardcore" sci-fi film that presents a really interesting look at what other life forms might be like. I can see why they never made another Star Trek film like this though - it's a little bit too ponderous and isn't exactly action-packed! The glacial pacing doesn't help either. it really didn't need to be as slow as it is.
- DirectorDonald CammellStarsJulie ChristieFritz WeaverGerrit GrahamA scientist creates Proteus--an organic super computer with artificial intelligence which becomes obsessed with human beings, and in particular the creator's wife.A classy slice of 70's sci-fi horror. The evil AI / computer might be a HAL knock-off but it's still wonderfully menacing. The idea of having a "smart house" is now more relevant than ever, so the concept has aged brilliantly - throw in a great ending and you've got a must-see 70's sci-fi film.
- DirectorPaul BartelStarsDavid CarradineSylvester StalloneSimone GriffethIn a dystopian future, a cross country automobile race requires contestants to run down innocent pedestrians to gain points that are tallied based on each kill's brutality.Looks like it was made for $50 but is a hands-down camp cult classic. Really good fun if you can handle mind-melting levels of stilton!
- DirectorDon CoscarelliStarsA. Michael BaldwinBill ThornburyReggie BannisterNewly orphaned teenager Mike Pearson, his older brother Jody, and their friends face off against a mysterious grave robber known as the Tall Man, who employs a lethal arsenal of unearthly weapons in their southern California town.
