- DirectorDaniel KwanDaniel ScheinertStarsPaul DanoDaniel RadcliffeMary Elizabeth WinsteadA hopeless man stranded on a deserted island befriends a dead body, and together they go on a surreal journey to get home.My absolute favourite film of the year. It put a stupid grin on my face the whole way through and a warm yet bittersweet feeling in my heart. Paul Dano and Daniel Radcliffe give absolutely stunning performances and are phenomenal together. The soundtrack is wholly unique, endearing and enchanting. While being quite silly, the film still manages to deliver a heartfelt message. I loved Swiss Army Man to bits and would recommend it to anyone.
- DirectorJake RodkinStarsRich SommerCissy JonesLarissa GallagherIn 1989, Henry takes a volunteer fire lookout job in the Wyoming wilderness to escape from his troubled past, only to be thrown into plethora of paranoia and mystery.
- DirectorTom FordStarsAmy AdamsJake GyllenhaalMichael ShannonA wealthy art gallery owner is haunted by her ex-husband's novel, a violent thriller she interprets as a symbolic revenge tale.Nocturnal Animals gave me probably the best movie going experiences of the year. The film's story and overwhelming sense of style just floored me. Tom Ford's directing and the cinematography is absolutely gorgeous, the score by Abel Korzeniowski is hauntingly beautiful. The whole film oozes with style and atmosphere, the acting is fantastic, Amy Adams gives one of the best performances of the year (male or female).
- DirectorRobert EggersStarsAnya Taylor-JoyRalph InesonKate DickieA family in 1630s New England is torn apart by the forces of witchcraft, black magic and possession. The Witch is the best horror film to come out in decades. The setting and atmosphere is immensely grim and dour, it makes the film heavy and tense, it really crawls under your skin (I can't stop thinking about the ending ever since I saw it).
- DirectorAndrew DominikStarsNick CaveWarren EllisJim SclavunosExplores the creative process of Nick Cave and his band as the singer struggles with an unspoken personal tragedy. One of the most emotional experiences of 2016. The viewing experience felt very strange, almost too close, too personal or intimate and sometimes quite uncomfortably so. A must see for fans of Nick Cave.
- DirectorPeter MiddletonJames SpinneyStarsJohn M. HullMarilyn HullMiranda Beinart-SmithIn the summer of 1983, just days before the birth of his first son, writer and theologian John Hull went blind. In order to make sense of the upheaval in his life, he began keeping a diary on audiocassette. Upon their publication in 1990, Oliver Sacks described the work as 'the most extraordinary, precise, deep and beautiful account of blindness I have ever read. It is to my mind a masterpiece.' With exclusive access to these original recordings, NOTES ON BLINDNESS encompasses dreams, memory and imaginative life, excavating the interior world of blindness.Wouldn't call it a documentary per se, it's more than that. The creators of this exceptional film successfully recreated John Hull's notes on his initial battle and later acceptance of his blindness. All of his struggles, ups and downs and even the surprisingly blissful moments he went through, shown in a beautifully artistic way.
- DirectorMichael Dudok de WitStarsEmmanuel GarijoTom HudsonBaptiste GoyA man is shipwrecked on a deserted island and encounters a big red turtle, which changes his life.A beautiful film. The story is quite simple, but it's meaning can be interpreted in so many ways and I love that about it.
- DirectorMike MillsStarsAnnette BeningElle FanningGreta GerwigThe story of a teenage boy, his mother, and two other women who help raise him among the love and freedom of Southern California of 1979.Mike Mills' beautiful and touching ode to his mother and the powerful and influential women of his young adult life is wonderful. As a man who was mostly raised by women I could relate to this film a lot. The cast is great and the atmosphere feels delightfully nostalgic.
- DirectorDenis VilleneuveStarsAmy AdamsJeremy RennerForest WhitakerA linguist works with the military to communicate with alien lifeforms after twelve mysterious spacecraft appear around the world.Smart sci-fi at its best. Denis Villeneuve made an absolutely stunning and superb film full of atmosphere. Arrival has a very tight plot, centred around Amy Addams' character, which is surprisingly grounded and believable. Though it's not the most original premise, it's very similar to Contact (a personal favourite), it goes in a rather unprecedented direction and has a very distinct sophisticated voice. A definite must-see and not just for sci-fi fans.
- DirectorKelly ReichardtStarsMichelle WilliamsKristen StewartLaura DernThe lives of three women intersect in small-town America, where each is imperfectly blazing a trail.
- DirectorDavid MackenzieStarsChris PineBen FosterJeff BridgesToby is a divorced father who's trying to make a better life. His brother is an ex-con with a short temper and a loose trigger finger. Together, they plan a series of heists against the bank that's about to foreclose on their family ranch. An immensely entertaining and beautifully shot film with terrific performances and a great soundtrack wrapped in a tight plot. It really is a breath of fresh air straight from the wild west. Enjoyed almost every minute of it.
- DirectorRaoul PeckStarsSamuel L. JacksonJames BaldwinMartin Luther KingWriter James Baldwin tells the story of race in modern America with his unfinished novel, Remember This House.
- DirectorDuke JohnsonCharlie KaufmanStarsDavid ThewlisJennifer Jason LeighTom NoonanA man crippled by the mundanity of his life experiences something out of the ordinary.
- DirectorDamien ChazelleStarsRyan GoslingEmma StoneRosemarie DeWittWhile navigating their careers in Los Angeles, a pianist and an actress fall in love while attempting to reconcile their aspirations for the future.La La Land has this soul that has been lacking in most mainstream films for a while now. Overall I think it's a lovely film with a brilliant performance by Emma Stone, great dance numbers and some solid songs. It's a bit overhyped, but it truly is a delight.
- DirectorJeremy SaulnierStarsAnton YelchinImogen PootsAlia ShawkatA punk rock band is forced to fight for survival after witnessing a murder at a neo-Nazi skinhead bar.Green Room was the second most enjoyable film this year. A real stomach-churning thrillride.
P.S.: Rest in Peace Anton Yelchin. - CreatorLouis C.K.StarsLouis C.K.Steve BuscemiEdie FalcoLouis C.K.'s Eugene O'Neill-esque dramatic web series about two cousins, introverted Horace and mentally ill Pete, the current owners of their family's Irish bar "Horace and Pete's", and their dysfunctional family and friends.
- DirectorNicolas Winding RefnStarsElle FanningChristina HendricksKeanu ReevesAn aspiring model, Jesse, is new to Los Angeles. However, her beauty and youth, which generate intense fascination and jealousy within the fashion industry, may prove themselves sinister. After giving it some time, I came to the conclusion that I rather loved The Neon Demon. The cinematography is gorgeous (as usual), the score is eerie and otherwordly with acting that's out of this world too, Elle Fanning is fantastic and the level of commitment from the actors is far out - especially from Jena Malone (she's incredible). Also after reconsidering the film's theme or message, I realized that it's far more intelligent and layered than I originally gave it credit. Sure the film is a bit slow and pornographic in a sense, but it's damn great otherwise.
- DirectorDenzel WashingtonStarsDenzel WashingtonViola DavisStephen McKinley HendersonA working-class African-American father tries to raise his family in the 1950s, while coming to terms with the events of his life.I was completely drawn in and latched unto Denzel and Viola's characters. Admittedly Denzel's directing is way too stagy, but it surprised me how much I loved this film (except for the ending, which was pretty cheesy).
- DirectorMartin ScorseseStarsAndrew GarfieldAdam DriverLiam NeesonIn the 17th century, two Portuguese Jesuit priests travel to Japan in an attempt to locate their mentor, who is rumored to have committed apostasy, and to propagate Catholicism.Silence was one of the most demanding films to watch this year. The subject matter alone is insanely heavy and the moral questions about faith it tackles are just so hard to contemplate, it makes my head hurt. Scorsese put all his heart and passion into this film and it shows. It's a beautiful and gruelling film. Definitely a tough yet rewarding watch.
- DirectorBarry JenkinsStarsMahershala AliNaomie HarrisTrevante RhodesA young African-American man grapples with his identity and sexuality while experiencing the everyday struggles of childhood, adolescence, and burgeoning adulthood.Moonlight is a very personal film made with an abundance of care. The casting is spot on, Barry Jenkins' directing and the film's cinematography is gorgeous with a great soundtrack and a very touching score. I do not feel like I really got to know Chiron's character that much during the film, though, and that definitely took away from his personality and some of the enjoyability for me. Moonlight's no character study, but an emotional and melancholic glimpse into the stages of someone's life and their touching romance, with an insight into the black community of Miami. It's rather beautiful.
- DirectorOz PerkinsStarsRuth WilsonPaula PrentissBob BalabanA young nurse takes care of an elderly author who lives in a haunted house.Truly one-of-a-kind and subtle. One of my favourite horror films of the year. Its premise is pretty straightforward, but the execution and artistic choices made by Oz Perkins are phenomenally unique. The atmosphere and pacing made me feel incredibly uneasy. It's a real slow-burner, though, so be prepared for that.
- DirectorAntonio CamposStarsRebecca HallMichael C. HallTracy LettsThe story of Christine Chubbuck, a 1970s TV reporter struggling with depression and professional frustrations as she tries to advance her career.Rebecca Hall gives one of the best performances of the year in this tragic and heartbreaking biopic. The one and only problem I had with Christine is it's running time, it drags on a bit at times and really feels its length. Be prepared, though, because it's not an easy watch.
- CreatorDonald GloverStarsDonald GloverBrian Tyree HenryLaKeith StanfieldEarn and his cousin, Alfred, try to make their way in the world through Atlanta's rap scene. Along the way they come face-to-face with social and economic issues touching on race, relationships, poverty, status and parenthood.
- DirectorNicolas PesceStarsKika MagalhãesWill BrillOlivia BondIn their secluded farmhouse, a mother (a former surgeon) teaches her daughter, Francisca, anatomy, and how life and death are not to be feared. One afternoon, a mysterious visitor shatters the idyll of their family life, and deeply traumatises Francisca, but also awakens curiosities. Years later, Francisca clings to her increasingly distant father, but the trauma she sustained reawaken when her desire to connect with the world around her takes on a dark form.An extremely dour and gruesome study of isolation, loneliness and tragedy. The Eyes of My Mother feels very hollow and slightly directionless, which can be a flaw for many, but I felt like it was just like its main character, it was justified and fitting in this way. The cinematography is beautiful and the eccentric acting gives it a dream like quality in a quite nightmareish way. It's definitely not for everyone, not for the squeamish, but I found The Eyes of My Mother to be absolutely gripping and loved almost every minute of it.
- DirectorPark Chan-wookStarsKim Min-heeHa Jung-wooCho Jin-woongA woman is hired as a handmaiden to a Japanese heiress, but secretly she is involved in a plot to defraud her.One of the best and possibly the most entertaining films of the year. The story is a bit too pulpy for my taste, but its many twists are crafted in a masterful way.
- DirectorOz PerkinsStarsEmma RobertsKiernan ShipkaLucy BoyntonTwo girls must battle a mysterious evil force when they get left behind at their boarding school over winter break.
- CreatorAunty DonnaStarsBroden KellyMark Samual BonannoZachary RuaneA bunch of cheeky boys and girls who work at an office experience and partake in absurd situations. Featuring ManBeast, Mr. Bull, Bigoted Bill, and even Mark Samual Bonanno.
- DirectorClaude BarrasStarsGaspard SchlatterSixtine MuratPaulin JaccoudAfter losing his mother, a young boy is sent to an orphanage with other orphans his age where he begins to learn the meaning of trust and true love.Ma Vie de Courgette is one of the most human films I've seen, "in spite of" it being claymation.
- DirectorAlice LoweStarsAlice LoweDan Renton SkinnerJo HartleyWidow Ruth is seven months pregnant when, believing herself to be guided by her unborn baby, she embarks on a homicidal rampage, dispatching anyone who stands in her way.
- DirectorBo BurnhamChristopher StorerStarsBo BurnhamBo Burnham tackles life, death, sexuality, hypocrisy, mental illness and Pringles cans in his dazzling new stand-up special.
- DirectorJeremy KonnerRiki LindhomeStarsRiki LindhomeKate MicucciAnthony JeselnikMusical comedy duo, Garfunkel and Oats attempt to put on a comedy special.
- DirectorFede AlvarezStarsStephen LangJane LevyDylan MinnetteHoping to walk away with a massive fortune, a trio of thieves break into the house of a blind man who isn't as helpless as he seems.
- DirectorJohn LeeStarsPaul ReubensJordan BlackDoug CoxA fateful meeting with a mysterious stranger inspires Pee-wee Herman to take his first holiday ever in this epic story of friendship and destiny.A jolly good time! Paul Reubens is fantastic as always and him and Joe Manganiello as a duo are surprisingly great.
- DirectorYeon Sang-hoStarsGong YooJung Yu-miMa Dong-seokWhile a zombie virus breaks out in South Korea, passengers struggle to survive on the train from Seoul to Busan.
- DirectorJustin LinStarsChris PineZachary QuintoKarl UrbanThe crew of the USS Enterprise explores the furthest reaches of uncharted space, where they encounter a new ruthless enemy, who puts them, and everything the Federation stands for, to the test.
- DirectorTim MillerStarsRyan ReynoldsMorena BaccarinT.J. MillerA wisecracking mercenary gets experimented on and becomes immortal yet hideously scarred, and sets out to track down the man who ruined his looks.Deadpool is a fun one. Not every joke lands, some are forced, but it's consistently entertaining and has a very likable laidback attitude.
- DirectorAndré ØvredalStarsBrian CoxEmile HirschOphelia LovibondA father and son, both coroners, are pulled into a complex mystery while attempting to identify the cause of death of a young woman who was apparently harboring dark secrets. This film, after The Conjuring 2, was one of the most fun horror films I've seen in years. The premise is fantastic, but the execution had some things to be desired. It does seem like the writers kinda ran out of ideas and just filled the film with some spooky shenanigans by the end. Which I did not mind that much, because they were done quite well - producing some real spooky scenes outside the pathology room, but the best were the ones that happened inside it.
- StarsTrixie MattelKatya ZamolodchikovaRon HillIt's their show, and not yours. Co-hosts Trixie Mattel and Katya Zamolodchikova web series covers a range of personal topics week to week.
- DirectorTaika WaititiStarsSam NeillJulian DennisonRima Te WiataA national manhunt is ordered for a rebellious kid and his foster uncle who go missing in the wild New Zealand bush.Wacky, zany, heartfelt, touching, ridiculous and outright hilarious. It's Taika Waititi! There's a little a bit of fat that could have been trimmed from Hunt for the Wilderpeople's running time, but other than that the film is wonderful.
- CreatorMatt DufferRoss DufferStarsMillie Bobby BrownFinn WolfhardWinona RyderWhen a young boy vanishes, a small town uncovers a mystery involving secret experiments, terrifying supernatural forces and one strange little girl.
- DirectorSteve FukudaStarsMatthew MercerGlenn SteinbaumFred TatascioreAt the edge of the Frontier, a Titan and a common footsoldier are unexpectedly thrown together in a desperate attempt to prevent a catastrophic event.
- DirectorDan TrachtenbergStarsJohn GoodmanMary Elizabeth WinsteadJohn Gallagher Jr.A young woman is held in an underground bunker by a man who insists that a hostile event has left the surface of the Earth uninhabitable.
- DirectorJim HoskingStarsMichael St. MichaelsSky ElobarElizabeth De RazzoRonnie runs a Disco walking tour with his son, Brayden. When a sexy woman takes the tour, it begins a competition between father and son for her love. It also signals the arrival of an oily strangler who stalks the streets at night.I've seen The Greasy Strangler three times already, and I'm still not quite sure whow to feel about it. I think I love it... It's absolutely bonkers for sure!
- DirectorBabak AnvariStarsNarges RashidiAvin ManshadiBobby NaderiAs a mother and daughter struggle to cope with the terrors of the post-revolution, war-torn Tehran of the 1980s, a mysterious evil begins to haunt their home.Under the Shadow manages to be both a tense thriller and a drama with strong (though at times heavy-handed) social commentary. Definitely would recommend it, especially if you're looking for a horror film with substance.
- DirectorAndrea ArnoldStarsSasha LaneShia LaBeoufRiley KeoughA teenage girl with nothing to lose joins a traveling magazine sales crew, and gets caught up in a whirlwind of hard partying, law bending and young love as she criss-crosses the Midwest with a band of misfits. An oddly mesmerizing film. The cinematography is gorgeous and the whole film has this documentary feel to it, both in its actors/actresses and its honest look at the struggling southern regions of the US. Though almost none of the characters are likable per se, there's a certain sincerety to them, you feel like you know people like them, which keeps you captivated throughout the dounting 160 minute runtime.
- DirectorJ.A. BayonaStarsLewis MacDougallSigourney WeaverFelicity JonesConor, a twelve-year-old boy, encounters an ancient tree monster who proceeds to help him cope with his mother's terminal illness and being bullied in school.J.A. Bayona made a beautiful film that's filled with stunning visuals and great performances - especially by Lewis MacDougall and Sigourney Weaver - but it's weirdly conventional and its message is conveyed heavy-handedly with way too much exposition. All in all, I felt like the film had the potential to be better, but it's still a wonderful tale, that touched my heart.
- DirectorS. Craig ZahlerStarsKurt RussellPatrick WilsonMatthew FoxIn the dying days of the old west, an elderly sheriff and his posse set out to rescue their town's doctor from cannibalistic cave dwellers.
- CreatorPhoebe Waller-BridgeStarsPhoebe Waller-BridgeSian CliffordOlivia ColmanSeries adapted from the award-winning play about a young woman trying to cope with life in London whilst coming to terms with a recent tragedy.
- DirectorPaolo GenoveseStarsGiuseppe BattistonAnna FogliettaMarco GialliniSeven long-time friends meet for dinner. They decide to share their text messages, emails and phone calls. Secrets are unveiled. Harmony trembles.
- DirectorAnna BillerStarsSamantha RobinsonJeffrey Vincent PariseLaura WaddellA modern-day witch uses spells and magic to get men to fall in love with her, with deadly consequences.Feels like a throwback to 70s. The Love Witch is truly enchanting. The acting is lovably overdramatic and the set design and art decorations are just phenomenal, complimented by fantastic dream-like cinematography. It's biggest flaw is that it overstays its welcome. With a running time of 2 hours it stretches the material incredibly thin (it shouldn't have been longer than 80 minutes).
- DirectorPedro AlmodóvarStarsEmma SuárezAdriana UgarteDaniel GraoAfter a casual encounter, a brokenhearted woman decides to confront her life and the most important events involving her estranged daughter.
- DirectorJay BaumanMike StoklasaStarsRich EvansMike StoklasaJocelyn RidgelySpace Cop is the story of a cop from the future of space who travels back in time to the present and is teamed up with a cop from the past who is unfrozen in the present. Together, they must defeat evil aliens with a sinister plan.I'm a fan of Red Letter Media, so that is the main reason why I enjoyed this film as much as I did. Space Cop is not RLM's best or funniest work (though probably the most competently made), but it is amusing enough to keep you entertained the whole way through. Watching Rich Evans playing the straight man (with the over the top Snake Plissken impression) and Mike hamming it up as the goofy old-timey cop is worth watching alone. That said there are parts that drag on without being as funny as these guys' content usually is. Space Cop has its fair share of problems, but I don't get the harsh criticisms I've read from the fanbase. It's not a serious or completely seriously made film, it's dumb fun with pretty decent special effects and a nice score with a fun ending and a bunch of eastereggs sprinkled throughout. I kinda loved it, but I'm quite biased.
Still, if I weren't familiar with RLM, I think I would have enjoyed it nonetheless. - DirectorTodd SolondzStarsGreta GerwigKeaton Nigel CookeTracy LettsA dachshund passes from oddball owner to oddball owner, whose radically dysfunctional lives are all impacted by the pooch.
- DirectorRachel TunnardStarsJodie WhittakerLorraine AshbourneBrett GoldsteinAnna (Jodie Whittaker) is comfortable living in her mom's garden shed making funny videos all day, but as she approaches 30, she starts feeling the pressure to move on and "grow up" without compromising her youthful spirit.
- DirectorDavid YatesStarsEddie RedmayneKatherine WaterstonAlison SudolIn 1926, magizoologist Newt Scamander arrives in New York during his worldwide tour to research and rescue magical creatures as something mysterious leaves trails of destruction in the city, threatening to expose the wizarding world.Fantastic Beasts made me feel this amazing sense of wonder that I haven't experienced since the Potter films. The story is very predictable and the CG effects are sub-par at times, but I have to say that I did like this film, quite a lot actually. It's charming, delightful and adorably wholesoem at times with some pretty great acting as well. I'm optimistically looking forward to this series.
- DirectorJames WanStarsVera FarmigaPatrick WilsonMadison WolfeEd and Lorraine Warren travel to North London to help a single mother raising four children alone in a house plagued by a supernatural spirit.I watched it in a packed theatre, it was one of the most enjoyable cinema-going experiences I had in 2016. It has probably the scariest first 40 minutes of supernatural horror I've seen in a long time, it kept me on the edge of my seat all tensed up. Unfortunately this tension progressively dies down as the movie goes from more refined scares to your typical obnoxiously loud modern horror film with a dumb explosive ending.
The Elvis scene while a little bit cheesy is one of my favourite scenes of the whole year. - DirectorDerek CianfranceStarsMichael FassbenderAlicia VikanderRachel WeiszA lighthouse keeper and his wife living off the coast of Western Australia raise a baby they rescue from a drifting rowing boat.A Gorgeous film both in writing, directing, acting and cinematography... basically in every way possible. As many people have said, it really is like reading a book without actually reading... more like "watching a book" if that makes sense. This might throw some people off, but if it doesn't, definitely do give this film a chance. It's an intriguing story told beautifully.
- DirectorJaume Collet-SerraStarsBlake LivelyÓscar JaenadaAngelo Josue Lozano CorzoA mere 200 yards from shore, surfer Nancy is attacked by a great white shark, with her short journey to safety becoming the ultimate contest of wills.
- DirectorKen LoachStarsDave JohnsHayley SquiresSharon PercyAfter surviving a heart-attack, a 59-year-old carpenter must fight bureaucratic forces to receive Employment and Support Allowance. The social commentary and criticism in I, Daniel Blake is blunt and at times bordering on preachy but that does not mean it's not relevant or true.
- DirectorChadd HarboldStarsShiloh FernandezElla Rae PeckPaten HughesAn examination of the romantic life of a young man in New York City and his sometimes fleeting, sometimes profound experiences with the women he encounters. An honest look at the nightly life of a bachelor in New York. It shows everything from the empty lust filled chase, to the everlasting longing for a connection and love in the main character James, portrayed quite authentically by the charming Shiloh Fernandez. On first glance it's a simple and shallow film, supposedly an adaptation of Charles Bukowski's novel, Women, but that's kind of the point, James is a shallow, yet human character. The film is the same, there are some very interesting artistic choices and the more I think about it the better it gets.
- DirectorPaul SchraderStarsNicolas CageWillem DafoeChristopher Matthew CookA crew of ex-cons are hired by a Cleveland mafioso to kidnap the baby of a rival mobster.
- DirectorMel GibsonStarsAndrew GarfieldSam WorthingtonLuke BraceyWorld War II American Army Medic Desmond T. Doss, serving during the Battle of Okinawa, refuses to kill people and becomes the first man in American history to receive the Medal of Honor without firing a shot. The first hour is quite mediocre, it's very schmaltzy, BUT... after we get to Hacksaw Ridge, into the heart of battle, the film becomes kind of great. The battle of Okinawa is portrayed extremely brutally and terrifyingly. Also this is where Andrew Garfield really got to shine, he was fantastic. It's a touching film paying respect to an extraordinary real life hero. If done right, I can be a real sucker for cheese in movies.
- DirectorYimou ZhangStarsMatt DamonTian JingWillem DafoeIn ancient China, a group of European mercenaries encounters a secret army that maintains and defends the Great Wall of China against a horde of monstrous creatures.Shove some porcorn in your face and enjoy the fantastic dumb video game schlock that is The Great Wall.
