- DirectorTobe HooperStarsSteve RailsbackMathilda MayPeter FirthA race of space vampires arrives in London and infects the populace, beginning an apocalyptic descent into chaos.Sure, it has a ridiculous premise. For me, movies are all about FEEL. And this movie had it down. The best movies, especially ones with ridiculous premises, succeed because the flow is consistent, and the overall theme of the movie trumps its silliness. This film does that, for me. I loved it.
- DirectorJan de BontStarsAngelina JolieGerard ButlerChris BarrieAdventurer Lara Croft goes on a quest to save the mythical Pandora's Box, before an evil scientist finds it, and recruits a former Marine turned mercenary to assist her.I love to use this for my argument against trying to make video games into movies. The reason, in my opinion, that this has consistently failed, is because too much of the video game is put into the movie. You can't carry the pixels from one medium to another, all you can carry is the story. While the first Tomb Raider tried to balance both (and failed, in my opinion) this one nailed the idea of who Lara Croft is, and made a solid movie about it, with a good plot, excellent shots, and a villain that was worthy, for a change.
- DirectorM.J. BassettStarsAdelaide ClemensKit HaringtonSean BeanWhen her adoptive father disappears, Sharon Da Silva is drawn into a strange and terrifying alternate reality that holds answers to the horrific nightmares that have plagued her since childhood.I love this film because the director understood what Silent Hill is, and got creative about it, using his knowledge to create an elaboration of the plot of Silent Hill 3 with new twists, and even found a way to support the unexplained ending of Silent Hill (the movie). I guess the complaint is that the movie doesn't stay true to the game, but I still think that is not only practically impossible, but foolish... I don't WANT the movie to be the same as the game. I played the game. I remember the game. I cherish the game. Show me something that is different. Show me something along the same LINES as the game, but with some creativity and originality. This movie did that, for me, at least.
- DirectorGary NelsonStarsMaximilian SchellAnthony PerkinsRobert ForsterA research vessel finds a missing ship, commanded by a mysterious scientist, on the edge of a black hole.I disagree that it hasn't aged well, I don't care that the robots are held by strings and look like puppets, and okay, I have no freaking idea what happens at the end of the movie either. Did they live? Did they die? Are they going to heaven? Are Maximillian and Reinhart in hell? I DON'T CARE. It's an awesome ride, an amazing soundtrack, great performances that go too easily overlooked, with a theme and a feel that outweighs any of its silliness. I LOVE this movie!!
- DirectorJeremiah S. ChechikStarsRalph FiennesUma ThurmanSean ConneryTwo British Agents team up to stop Sir August de Wynter from destroying the world with a weather-changing machine. Not really sure why everyone hates this movie. It's over-the-top ridiculousness felt pretty at home to me, since I was always a fan of the TV show. I'll grant you that Uma Thurman (as much as I like her) doesn't stack up so well to Diana Rigg (but who could?), but overall the movie's insanity matched the tongue-in-cheek feel of the show to a T. Ralph Fiennes has never had a bad performance, and seeing Sean Connery take a turn as the bad guy was cool, too. Come on, guys! It's popcorn at its finest!!
- DirectorSam Taylor-JohnsonStarsDakota JohnsonJamie DornanJennifer EhleLiterature student Anastasia Steele's life changes forever when she meets handsome, yet tormented, billionaire Christian Grey.Expectations DESTROY movies. Star Wars VII suffered because of it, and so does this movie. What did you want, exactly? Porn on the big screen? Loyalty to the S&M community? You expected the movie to be a romance? You expected it to be a comedy? Regardless of WHAT you expected it to be, the movie was grey. I realized how interesting the theme of the movie was when I tried to explain it to someone. It was... (Romantic?) Kind of, I guess. No, not really, but sort-of? (Sexy?) Yes, but then... No... Kind of? You know what this movie is? It's GREY. And that was the point. Once I realized that, my appreciation of it skyrocketed. (And by the way, the soundtrack is AWESOME).
- DirectorAndrew BergmanStarsDemi MooreBurt ReynoldsArmand AssanteA stripper and single mother gets dragged into a dangerous situation after a congressman takes a fancy to her.The key to why I like this movie has to do with the fact that Demi Moore plays it straight, in the middle of a three-ring circus going on all around her. Every character has his or her own level of silly going on, but Demi's character isn't, like the only sane person in a mental home, or the insane person dreaming up all the other characters. I thought Burt Reynolds was hilarious, I thought Ving Rhames was a treat. I thought Armand Assante didn't get enough screen time. Crazy and unique!
- DirectorWillard HuyckStarsLea ThompsonJeffrey JonesTim RobbinsA sarcastic humanoid duck is pulled from his homeworld to Earth where he must stop an alien invasion with the help of a nerdy scientist and a struggling female rock singer.Time is what makes everyone hate this movie. You look back on it now with embarrassment, kind of like an adult looking back on his first crush in high school, or maybe how somebody from today might look back on his obsession with 80s music. The trick is, you shouldn't HAVE to apologize for liking something, despite what other people think. You remember this movie. You watched this movie. And, a long time ago, when you weren't so full of yourself and so terribly serious, you LIKED this movie. And so did I.
- DirectorRobert AltmanStarsRobin WilliamsShelley DuvallRay WalstonThe adventures of the famous sailor man and his friends in the seaside town of Sweethaven. So I'm watching ALTMAN, the documentary about the famous director and his work, and I'm listening to Gene Shallot explain (with a strange amount of anger, it seemed) that his version of POPEYE didn't live up to his expectations. He wanted the cartoon to come to life, and what he saw did not live up to his expectations. So let me get this straight... You wanted the cartoon to come to life? You know, where stringy Olive Oyl is constantly pursued by Bluto, only to be beaten up by Popeye if and only if he eats his spinach? Hey, wait... Isn't that pretty much what happened in the movie, you daffy bastard?? What else do you WANT, for crying out loud??
- DirectorBrett LeonardStarsJeff FaheyPierce BrosnanJenny WrightA simple man is turned into a genius through the application of computer science.I wonder if Virtual Reality had made a bigger impact, if this movie would have gotten a bit more praise than it has received. I think, if you surrender to the ridiculous premise and overlook its obvious lack of application to the modern world, that you can see the overtone of the point trying to be made just below the surface. If we linked with a computer mind, what would happen? What would it be like, to process our thoughts at a level of a computer processor? Assuming stories of telekinesis and psychic ability are not just stories, but possibilities, what would happen if a computer's abilities became our own? What if we could access all of our potential, at an accelerated evolutionary rate? Like TRON, this movie dares to use a fictional backdrop to address a modern concern when bridging the gap between flesh and machine... Like Jobe says, at one point in the movie, "You wish to create monsters... Why??"
