The "Found-Footage" Genre
A collaboration of all of the best "Found-Footage" films I have seen. I enjoy these types of films, especially the ones of the horror genre, but there are a lot of great ones out there that aren't big budget films and some that are. Enjoy and be sure to let me know if you guys have any Found Footage suggestions for me to watch. Thanks! :)

- DirectorDaniel MyrickEduardo SánchezStarsHeather DonahueMichael C. WilliamsJoshua LeonardThree film students vanish after traveling into a Maryland forest to film a documentary on the local Blair Witch legend, leaving only their footage behind.Well this isn't the best FF film but it was the first one I ever saw. It's a cult classic to many and some hate it but you have to admit that the Blair Witch made it's impact in the film industry.
My Rating: 9/10
(Suspensful/Intense. Very fun to find mistakes in while watching, and the ending can be a let down, but worth a watch) - DirectorRuggero DeodatoStarsRobert KermanFrancesca CiardiPerry PirkanenDuring a rescue mission into the Amazon rainforest, a professor stumbles across lost film shot by a missing documentary crew.Okay, yes a lot of people dislike this movie, but I have a thing for 80's type Grindhouse films. Exploitation films make the best because they push film-making to it's boundaries, just like the Cannibal Holocaust.
My Rating: 10/10
(Can be very Violent/Gory, but the scene with the woman impaled by the pole will haunt me forever. Made back in the days where good "Magic Trick" special effects were relevant rather than cheap CGI) - DirectorOren PeliStarsKatie FeatherstonMicah SloatMark FredrichsAfter moving into a suburban home, a couple becomes increasingly disturbed by a nightly demonic presence.I'm not much for mainstream hate which is mostly why a lot of people hate this saga. For me I love the Paranormal Activity franchise, it started with an original film that we haven't seen the likes of in a while and brought good ghost stories back into the theater.
My Rating: 8/10
(Unexpected yet Predictable/ Enjoyable if you just want to see a creepy ghost story. I don't scare easily and these don't scare me but I enjoy them) - DirectorTod WilliamsStarsKatie FeatherstonMicah SloatMolly EphraimAfter experiencing what they think are a series of "break-ins", a family sets up security cameras around their home, only to realize that the events unfolding before them are more sinister than they seem.As for the sequel to one of my favorite ghost story FF films I was kicked on my ass. But not in a bad way, in such a way as I enjoyed it a lot and felt as though it took the franchise to a higher level.
My Rating: 9/10
(Even better special effects that the original, and similar set-up) - DirectorHenry JoostAriel SchulmanStarsChloe CsengeryJessica Tyler BrownChristopher Nicholas SmithIn 1988, young sisters Katie and Kristi befriend an invisible entity called Toby, who resides in their home. This one steps it up even further than 2 to me but I felt a lack of engagement in the ending in this one. It built up and built up but then the ending should have topped everything in the film, I just wanted to see some crazy *beep* go down but it didn't and that kind of disappointed me about 3.
My Rating: 7/10
(Goes up a step "effects" wise than 2/ but a soggy ending left my mouth dry) - DirectorHenry JoostAriel SchulmanStarsStephen DunhamKatie FeatherstonMatt ShivelyIt has been five years since the disappearance of Katie and Hunter, and a suburban family witness strange events in their neighborhood when a woman and a mysterious child move in.By this point a lot of people were feeling very SAW about this franchise but I wasn't for a good reason. Even though these films seem the same they build on each other, which I guess the SAW films do but they are all the same premise, while this one changed it up a bit. While not a lot of cool *beep* happens in this one at all a bunch of this one is more about story and whether or not you paid attention in previous films. When this one came out to bluray I spent most of the film explaining the story to friends who were less attentive in previous films. The ending to this one was also a bang to me, a lot of people did not like it but I though it was just fabulous because on the first watch I was simply like WTF
My Rating: 8/10
(Goes back to the original "effects wise, but brings a lot more story and a better ending back to the table. - DirectorChristopher LandonStarsAndrew JacobsJorge DiazGabrielle WalshWhen a young man becomes the target of a malevolent entity, he must uncover its true intentions before it takes complete control of him.Apparently by now you know I enjoy the PA franchise even more so with the latest entry. I dragged my friend to see this one and boy she wasn't disappointed either. However this one is kind of a spin-off but in a way it's not. It's really a spin-off that has a really cool explanatory *I think that's spelled right* ending. Holy crap the ending was just great. If you watched the first three just to check the ending out even people who hate this franchise thought the ending was cool, the whole film is actually great though.
My Rating: 10/10
(Typical PA Effects/More Witch Lore/Amazing Loop-Hole Ending :) - DirectorToshikazu NagaeStarsAoi NakamuraNoriko AoyamaKousuke KujiraiA young woman returns to Tokyo, following a car accident that fractured both of her legs. While her brother Koichi provides hospitality for Haruka, weird noises and events transpire in the house - leading to a more horrifying truth.(Haven't Seen Yet!)
- DirectorDean AliotoStarsBenz AntoineKristian AyreGillian BarberAfter a mysterious blackout, a son goes out to investigate and captures footage of actual aliens. When the aliens follow him and his brothers back to their home, all hell breaks loose.Okay, I have a thing for alien films and one of the best found footage films just so happens to be one of the cheesiest alien films ever. Whether this film makes you laugh or creeps you out its still a fun found footage film to watch overall. While I saw it more recently and it's age is showing, I loved it!
My Rating: 6/10
(Old film/Low budget/Can either be cheesy or creepy for the viewer, probably a cool film to watch with younger viewers to scare them etc. for fun) - DirectorDominic PerezStarsLaurel CasilloMorgan HooperTorrey WeissOn January 9, 2009, five college students left New York City for a weekend in the country. 48 hours later, all five students have simply vanished without a trace. There were no leads and no evidence - until now.Yeah I was drunk when I watched this the first time, and yes I've only seen it twice, but for some odd reason Evil Things is a creepy film. Like stalker creepy, which is actually what it's about. And I kind of liked the ending with the night vision, very Silence of the Lambs'y.
My Rating: 6/10
(Suspenseful/ Very entertaining. Well at least for me I kept wanting to know what was going to happen next and who was the person(s) tormenting the kids) - DirectorMatt Bettinelli-OlpinDavid BrucknerTyler GillettStarsCalvin Lee ReederLane HughesAdam WingardWhen a group of misfits are hired by an unknown third party to burglarize a desolate house and acquire a rare VHS tape, they discover more found footage than they bargained for.Amazing! Either I'm just a sucker for anthology films or VHS just takes all the great things about both the anthology genre and the found footage genre and sticks it into one movie. The movie feels very raw and exploitative, so it's a plus for my taste. The film revolves around five stories with my least favorite being the one about the killer in the woods. Nice try VHS I know Arty from Poultrygeist from anywhere.
My Rating: 10/10
(Great filming/ Good Gore/ Suspenseful/ Mythologically entertaining/ and a fun movie to drink some wine with, if of age, IMO) - DirectorSimon BarrettJason EisenerGareth EvansStarsLawrence Michael LevineKelsy AbbottAdam WingardSearching for a missing student, two private investigators break into his house and find collection of VHS tapes. Viewing the horrific contents of each cassette, they realize there may be dark motives behind the student's disappearance. If VHS is one of my favorites on this list then VHS2 (S-VHS) tops it by 10. I ABSOLUTELY loved the second one, way more than the first. My favorite segment being Alien Abduction Slumber Party. With one less segment than it's predecessor it still packs a huge punch into just 1 amazing anthology. The most infamous segment being Safe Haven, I'd say if you're not a fan of the first VHS you must watch this one just for the Safe Haven segment, it's hands down one of the most intriguing horror shorts I've ever seen.
My Rating 10/10
(Even better filming/Better Gore/Very Suspenseful/The Mythology Amazes/Personally I'd say skip the wine for this one, stay sober and enjoy the ride, it's all you'll need!) - DirectorJosh TrankStarsDane DeHaanAlex RussellMichael B. JordanThree high school friends gain superpowers after making an incredible discovery underground. Soon they find their lives spinning out of control and their bond tested as they embrace their darker sides. One of the few non horror films on my list, but one hell of a film. I loved this movie. I knew I would from the time I saw the trailer. I anticipated watching it and dragged my best friend to go see it with me. We both loved it and I now own the bluray. Just watch it and you'll see why I love it.
My Rating: 9/10
(Superpowers vs. Found Footage/ Great Special Effects/ Ending was a bit anticlimactic for my taste) - DirectorGustavo HernándezStarsFlorencia ColucciAbel TripaldiGustavo AlonsoA young woman becomes trapped inside a house and is unable to contact the outside world as mysterious forces haunt it.Yes it's the original Spanish version, and yes I know there is a US version but I like foreign films so I want this one to go first. The only thing I knew about La Casa Muda was that it was filmed entirely in one take and that it was some kind of horror film. YES I KNOW ITS NOT TRULY FF but it feels that way which is what I love about this film, is that by the end of it you don't know what the hell is what.
My Rating: 8/10
(Suspenseful/ Mysterious/ Very entertaining and the fact that it's the first film to be shot in one entire shot makes it neat) - DirectorChris KentisLaura LauStarsElizabeth OlsenAdam TreseEric Sheffer StevensA girl is trapped inside her family's lakeside retreat and becomes unable to contact the outside world as supernatural forces haunt the house with mysterious energy and consequences.Very similar to it's Spanish counterpart, I think, but for me I understood this version better. I'm not sure why but I did which is why I enjoyed it just a tad bit more. Some folks didn't care for it though, but as a fan of the original and the fact that I enjoyed this one even more.
My Rating: 9/10
(Suspenseful/ Mysterious/ Very entertaining and very similar to the original) - DirectorShane Van DykeStarsErin Marie HoganFia PereraNorman SaleetPrepare to see what is allegedly the "actual footage" of the supernatural events leading up to the 2008 murder of Samantha Finley. Released against the wishes of the authorities, this D.V.D. proves that nothing human caused Samantha's death.Oh my gosh, yes this is a rip-off of "Paranormal Activity" but geez does The Asylum do it so well....personally it's on par with it's big screen opponent. I liked this film all as well as PA. Mainly because I'm a softie for old Asylum and their lust to be as good as Troma... :)
My Rating: 7/10
(Not as Scary as PA/Somewhat decent Acting/ Effects are mediocre at best) - DirectorAnthony FankhauserStarsSally ElbertMichael GaglioJames Arthur LewisA group of investigators enter the former property of depraved serial killer John Wayne Gacy, hoping to find evidence of paranormal activity. Upon entering the place they set-up cameras throughout the abandoned house while going room to room with hand-held cameras, performing séances and asking for John Wayne Gacy to come forward. As the evening progresses it seems the investigators are not prepared for the horror still within the house.Paranormal Entity II: Gacy House
So this one right here, I actually liked this one. Non-canonical to the original PE film. I liked the fact that they used a serial killers home for the setting. Camera setup was just so much better than most of the Paranormal Activity movies, IMO, and well hell it's just funny and creepy to watch.
My rating 9/10
(Big Boobed Psychic Chick/Random Sex in Gacy's House/Terrifying Boy Loving Rapist Entity/Hell this movie has it all) - DirectorJude Gerard PrestStarsYaz CanliKai CoferChristopher Karl JohnsonIn the tradition of PARANORMAL ACTIVITY, found footage documents the real life exorcisms of Anneliese Michel, history's most notorious victim of demonic possession.Paranormal Entity III: The Exorcist Tapes
Oh my god what happened to this one right here. This one is where Paranormal Entity 'F's up big time. Crap Acting. Crap Setting. Not Scary. Go watch Emily Rose or the freaking Exorcist instead. Had so much potential to be a great B-horror found footage. Nooooo!
My Rating: 3/10
(Yes it's a very low rating/Advise to skip unless a PE fan) - DirectorMartin Wichmann AndersenStarsSteve BencichTony BessonHayley DerryberryIn 2010, paranormal investigators tried to film Richard Speck's ghost at the site of his heinous killing spree. The victims' families have finally released the footage that documents their last days.Paranormal Entity IV: The Awakening
Uh oh. Goodbye Paranormal Entity, unless a 5th installment can reclaim my love for the first two this will be the end.
My Rating: 2/10
(Horrible Acting/Not Scary/Horrible Camera Work/Like The Exorcist Tapes, I'd skip unless you really really like the first 2) - DirectorColin MinihanStuart OrtizThe Vicious BrothersStarsBenjamin WilkinsonSean RogersonAshleigh GryzkoFor their ghost hunting reality show, a production crew locks themselves inside an abandoned mental hospital that's supposedly haunted - and it might prove to be all too true.Okay so I really LOVE Grave Encounters, It was the first every FF that I saw that pulled towards a Ghost Hunters type film and I actually like the insane asylum getup. Not at all a bad film and worth a watch for FF fans. Personally this is a cousin to the Paranormal Activity films IMO but it is SO MUCH BETTER. I'm not sure why this didn't get put into theaters, I think it is a way better film.
My Rating: 9/10
(Good, Good, Good/Cool effects/Cool gore/Tops Paranormal Activity/GRAVE ENDING!) - DirectorJohn PoliquinStarsRichard HarmonShawn C. PhillipsJennica FultonA film student who is obsessed with the movie Grave Encounters sets out with his friends to visit the psychiatric hospital depicted in the original film. This right here is Gravception. Okay in this film Grave Encounter's is a movie and some college kids go looking for the original tv-crew. Enough said. That's not a SPOILER. Just go watch and see more crazy effects a couple of atmospherically creepy moments and good ghost stuff. NOBODY CHECKS OUT! EVER! IN THE ASYLUM!
My Rating: 10/10
(A wholenother level of GE/Similar Effects to 1/Movie within A Movie type Spiel) - DirectorBjorn AndersonStarsWayne BastrupMelissa GoadJohn SorenSecret video files just discovered on an FBI server prove that the government has been hiding unexplained disappearances and a dangerous presence in the Pacific Northwest wilderness.I was iffy on this one. I wanted to like it but near the end I was kind of like eh, wtf ever you guys wanna do. You wanna split up and run towards the monsters go ahead it isn't gonna change 50 other dumb decisions you've already made and their consequences that have gotten you locked in a house that is surrounded by monsters.
My Rating 4/10
(Creepy noises/terrible acting/if the characters didn't act so dumb it'd probably be close to interesting) - DirectorHowie AskinsStarsRyan McCoyBrett RosenbergAshley BrackenRyan makes a documentary on his friend, Brett, and his first time camping, until a mysterious figure in the woods starts hunting them.Okay now this one was good. Not great but good. the only thing about it is that I felt like it needed a little more "umph" and explanation. Not a terrible idea for a FF film either.
My Rating: 7/10
(Okay creature effects/Interesting ideas/pretty weird ending) - DirectorJohn Erick DowdleStarsStacy ChboskyBen MessmerSamantha RobsonIn an abandoned house in Poughkeepsie, New York murder investigators uncover hundreds of tapes showing decades of a serial killer's work. Some people hated this one. I found it more interesting than scary. It was somewhat of an undiscovered gem. It tries to be the Maniac remake before it's time in found footage form if that makes any sense. A serial killer filming his murders. I did find the whole kidnapped girl routine a bit WTF, you'll see why if you watch this one.
My Rating: 7/10
(Terrible looking video quality/interesting plot *kinda*)
