October Halloween Horrorfest 2013
It's Halloween time again! I'll be watching 1 horror flick each day until October 31st, when I will watch John Carpenter's Halloween. All of the movies I watch will be horror movies I have never seen before from Netflix, Crackle, Amazon/Prime, Youtube, or Hulu XBox and PS3 so they will be available to stream...I'll provide a very brief description of my thoughts. This list is mostly for me but if anyone reads it, hopefully I will save you a lot of wasted time on bad movies and maybe I'll find a few cool ones. Happy Halloween!
UPDATE: The first 5 movies I watched, I wasted a lot of time reading reviews hoping to see something good. Didn't exactly work out. Now I'm just gonna plow through horror movies with a 2013 date that I've never seen and not read a single review and hope for the best. I will probably use RedBox and VUDU now as well.
Leave a comment if you agree or if you think I'm a farking idiot. Also any recommendations are welcome.

If you have a Playstation 3 and Netflix, you have Max, a "virtual' guy who'll recommend movies for you. Max recommended Grim. Grim had nice lighting and framing. Grim had a big monster who did very little killing. Slow and confusing, Grim would be a good movie to watch if your NFL team was getting blown out on Sunday and you were hungover as hell and there was no Ernest movie on to watch instead. - DirectorMichael HurstStarsLance HenriksenRob FreemanAmy MansonWhen the true love between two young lovers is threatened by their families violent feud, their only chance at peace leads them to summoning the monstrous pumpkin head, who brings even greater horrors.(Crackle)
This movie is so bad. It's a Romeo and Juliet/Hatfield and McCoys rehash. Pumpkinhead is in less than ten minutes of time and skip it. DO NOT WATCH THIS MOVIE. EEVVEERR!!!! - DirectorCorey GrantStarsDrew RauschRich McDonaldAshley WoodAfter a "Bigfoot Hunter" claims to possess the body of a dead Sasquatch, a disgraced investigative journalist stakes his comeback -- and the lives of his documentary film crew -- on proving the find to be a hoax.(Hulu)
I enjoyed this movie a lot as a spoof of found footage movies. I seem to be the only person on the planet who thinks this is obvious satire/comedy and not horror(I was crying laughing so hard). They do NOT like sound guys!
Zero gore, this is a comedy. I did not expect that. Well done. - DirectorJeremy SaulnierStarsChris SharpKate PorterfieldTess Porterfield LovellA random invitation to a Halloween party leads a man into the hands of a rogue collective intent on murdering him for the sake of their art, sparking a bloodbath of mishap, mayhem and hilarity.(Pocorn Flix via XBox 360)
Low budget comedy/horror that pokes fun at pretentious artists and art lovers. Starts out funny, gets a bit talky...then piles on the gore and blood. Interesting and pretty watchable...but it also seems slightly artsy/pretentious itself. Maybe that's the point. - DirectorLeigh ScottStarsJeff DentonThomas DowneySarah LievingBased on actual accounts of werewolf sightings in Walworth County, Wisconsin, the film follows a local sheriff who is finally forced to accept that a string of horrifying deaths is linked to a predator which possesses DNA of both man and wolf.(Netflix)
Pretty good Werewolf movie from The Asylum. Good actors, nice cinematography and gratuitous topless scenes from some women-AND the Sheriff for the ladies. Needed more gore...two people died off screen screaming "it's eating us!(paraphrase)". Good movie. - DirectorBrett DonowhoStarsSteve BacicTara WestwoodAlix Elizabeth GitterA small town is haunted by the twin daughters of a wrongfully convicted man. Young Jordan is sent down the path to who the real killer is, only to find the killer is very close to her.(Netflix)
This was a pretty good movie. More of a ghost story/murder mystery. Not a lot of gore or scares, it's really not that kind of movie. But it is shot well and the acting all round is quality. The main girl is good throughout. I don't wanna give anything away but the mystery unfolds nicely and throws you for a twisted loop! - DirectorMike B. AndersonGuillermo del ToroRob OliverStarsDan CastellanetaJulie KavnerNancy CartwrightThe scariest Simpsons Halloween show yet, featuring an opening by Guillermo Del Toro.(Hulu Plus)
Well if you missed it it's on Hulu Plus. - DirectorDavid Dunn Jr.StarsCaitlin CarmichaelAmanda BakerCorbin BernsenA young woman reawakens evil forces in a house a notorious crime occurred.(Netflix)
Crew great/ Acting ok. Movie=TERRIBLE. Avoid at all costs if you are looking for a good October horror movie. Gore? Nope. Gary Busey? Yep. - DirectorAj MeadowsStarsAdam HartleyMadeleine RouseEric WarringtonA tall, shadowy figure with a blank face and a suit is thought to be behind recent disappearances of children.(Youtube)
This is it! This is the WORST movie I have ever seen...and I have seen Carl J. Sukenick's 'Alien Beasts'. This was a Kickstarter funded "movie" based on an internet meme. I guess it's supposed to be a "found footage" movie. Found footage movies usually involve a film crew. This movie has 3 characters that will eventually intersect and they all 3 just happen to use potatoes or Gameboys to film themselves 24/7. Get ready to watch shaky google searches, endless shots of the ground, zero lighting and interminable scenes of people driving in cars and their crappy, potato-filmed footage out the front windshield like a crappy dashcam. Wow. Worst movie I have ever sat through, hands down. - DirectorByron TurkStarsJean Louise O'SullivanZachary FletcherDante ZuccaOne year ago, Agnes Rickover attended opening night at the Bates Motel and Haunted Hayride to see her best friend Lily's dramatic debut. A horrific accident resulted in Agnes witnessing Lily's fiery death in a spectacle gone wrong. After a year of obsessing over a murder investigation everyone else thinks is open and shut, Agnes goes to work at the Haunt in an attempt confront her trauma. Horrific events begin to claim the lives of her coworkers and Agnes must figure out what is behind all of the "accidents" before more people die.(Hulu)
Oh I really enjoyed this movie. It is funny but knows when to be scary, has a high/gory bodycount and is well shot and well acted. Plus it takes place during October...and the set, The Bates Motel, is a real Haunted House in Pennsylvania that seems like a totally kick ass place to visit.
That said, the heroine, of the movie, Agnes, is a total bitch who can't keep/get a job anywhere in town except the Bates Motel. Red Flag! I was rooting for the "killer" to kill her. Seriously. Every character in the movie hates Agnes and they let her know it. You will hate Agnes. There might be a different sequel on the way...which I can't wait to see. Check this movie out..it's good stuff.
This movie has a funny scene with the late Ryan Dunn. - DirectorGary JonesStarsAmber ConnorJoe EstevezDan HaggertyYoung adults at a first-time offenders' boot camp discover the legend of the giant lumberjack Paul Bunyan is real, but is much more horrifying than they could have imagined.(Netflix)
This is some serious MST3K stuff. The monster is a guy in a rubber suit and he's put into scenes via CGI so the whole thing is goofy. The gore is mostly CGI as well. Everyone in this movie is unlikeable, especially the guidance counselor who somehow makes it through the movie alive. This makes it easy to root for the monster for it to slaughter everyone.
Actually, there is ONE likeable character: Meeks. Joe Estevez plays Meeks, the "crazy old man" in the woods character and he's pretty damn funny. So this is weird CGI monster movie with a large axe and JOE ESTEVEZ steals the show. Yes I just wrote that and if I read that, I would probably have to see for myself. At the end of the credits it says "BUNYAN WILL RETURN",
so expect a sequel. - DirectorAlexander YellenStarsCraig ShefferDennis HaysbertKate VernonA werewolf virus is unleashed upon New York, and Major Hoffman looks for a cure while Lt. General Monning wants to establish a new canine army.(Netflix)
I didn't know this was a SyFy movie until after I watched it. It had a bunch of gore I didn't know SyFy showed. This movie is more of an action movie than a horror movie. Asylum is coming along. Anyways as an action movie it mostly zips along. The State Farm guy(Dennis Haysbert) plays a psychotic General who wants to turn werewolves into soldiers and seems to enjoy his role ALOT! Wes Studi and Craig Schieffer give it their all. The werewolves are good CGI. Not bad for SyFy but it is still SyFy. - DirectorNimrod ZalmanowitzStarsAaron MathiasNathan SpiteriLaura GilreathNearly a century after the lonely death of Typhoid Mary, two aspiring filmmakers encounter her vengeful spirit in this horrifying paranormal thriller.(Netflix)
OK recently I said that Slender Man was the worst movie I have ever seen. This movie is equally as bad. This movie makes zero sense. I defy you to explain it to me or anyone. ZERO Horror this just effin sucks. You have been warned. NOT A HORROR MOVIE...TOTAL CRAPOLA. SKIP IT! - DirectorHunter G. WilliamsStarsChris HayesJeff StearnsBecka AdamsThis film tells the horrifying story of the cast and crew of a new reality TV show investigating the paranormal. When the team is denied access to the Ettersburg hospital, they decide to sneak in and explore at night. Ettersburg hospital, believed to be haunted after the tragic death years before of three young girls burned alive in an apparent accident is to be the pilot episode. What starts out as an uneventful evening exploring the dark halls of the expansive hospital, turns into a fear filled nightmare when one of their team goes missing. As the team separates to search for their missing friend, they find themselves running for their lives as one after the other they fall victim to the hospital and its crying dead.(Amazon Prime)
This was well acted and shot...and pretty enjoyable if you like the genre. If you don't like the genre, well there's shaky camera work and lots of mundane footage of walls and floors etc...and waiting for something to happen. Which obviously, I am not a fan of.
This movie is VERY similar to Grave Encounters(09/2011). It is much more low budget however. Amazon says this movie is 2013 and it seems that it HAS just been released. HOWEVER, IMDB says it was released 10/31/2011...which would mean it was produced at the same time as Grave Encounters...which this movie is almost exactly alike, so I dont think this is just some GE ripoff as if that matters.
Good production. If you like GE, you'll like this...if not stay away. - DirectorAndrew WeinerStarsJoe EgenderHaydyn FosterBrian HendersonWhat if the most chilling novel of all time was actually based on account of a horrific experiment gone awry?(Netflix)
Gets good production value from it's setting. Not a 100% found footage movie...shot and acted well, it's just that...found footage movies have no gore, barely any onscreen monster/ghost whatever, annoying characters who you want to see ripped to bloody shreds but never do because it's a micro budget found footage movie..and well...fark this genre..it's going nowhere. Enjoy! - DirectorTom DeNucciStarsEric RobertsMichael BerrymanJonathan SilvermanThe friends of a night watchman, at a highly secured self storage facility, are home from college and looking to party.(Netflix)
This is bad. The movie starts out with a "Saw" type killer with a weird voice whose face we cannot see. 10 minutes later we are introduced to the killer and this becomes a lame movie about human organ trade(with political undertones). Not to mention the thrilling set of a Self Storage business. Everybody in this movie deserves to die an excruciatingly gory death and not enough of them do. If you are an ECW fan, you get to see Tommy Dreamer in about 1 minute of screen time. DO NOT watch this movie, you have been warned.
Cool song during the end credits though. "Side by Side" by THE CAN'T NOTS - DirectorDon ManciniStarsChantal QuesnelleFiona DourifJordan GavarisAfter her mother's mysterious death, Nica begins to suspect that the talking, red-haired doll her visiting niece has been playing with may be the key to recent bloodshed and chaos.(VUDU/HD $4.99)
Decent. This is kind of a reboot. This is supposed to be a return to a "scary" Chucky. It takes itself very, very seriously. Unfortunately, even with the unrated version, not a lot of gore or Chucky knifing people. - DirectorRobert Ben GarantThomas LennonStarsRob CorddryLeslie BibbAlex BergAn expectant couple who moves into the most haunted house in New Orleans call upon the services of the Vatican's elite exorcism team to save them from a demonic baby.(VUDU/$6.99)
Comedy/Horror. Not a parody like Scary Movie, but more of an homage to horror with comedic elements. It needed lots more Hell Baby, who pops out with about 15 minutes to go. It also needed lots more Keeghan-Michael Key, who is hilarious everytime he shows up. - DirectorMike MendezStarsGreg GrunbergLin ShayeRuben PlaA giant alien spider escapes from a military lab and rampages the city of Los Angeles. When a massive military strike fails, it is up to a team of scientists and one clever exterminator to kill the creature before the city is destroyed.Totally delivers. Loved it. This is a Big Ass Spider movie and it owns it.
- DirectorTibor TakácsStarsWilliam HopeShelly VarodBrian HankeyAfter a Soviet space station crashes into a New York City subway tunnel, a species of venomous spiders is discovered, and soon they mutate to gigantic proportions and wreak havoc on the city.(Netflix)
7 Patrick Muldoons out of 10. Needs more spiders and needs more Patrick Muldoon. After it's ridiculous evil gov't plot...it finally gives us Patrick Muldoon vs a HUGE spider(?). Schweet. Patrick Muldoon. - DirectorBrian HigginsStarsMike AllenMatthew M. BaxterBryan BonnerAs an architect begins renovations to convert an old castle to a hotel;he uncovers more than he was expecting. He and his team of contractors experience hauntings and find what could be a portal to the afterlife.(Hulu)
Ok, the description made it seem like it was a found footage movie filmed in Denver. I live in Denver so thought I'd check it out. It's actually a documentary about the Croke Patterson Mansion and two guys who are restoring it to be a B&B. The Croke Patterson Mansion is an infamous haunted house right smack in the middle of Capitol Hill in Denver. You're better off reading about the Croke Patterson Mansion than watching this mess. - DirectorGeoff MeedStarsJason WilliamsAmy Van HorneDevin ClarkIn disregard of the shocking DeFeo murders, an unsuspecting family moves into the infamous house on 112 Ocean Avenue. Now, ghostly apparitions start to appear in their video surveillance system. Can they survive the Amityville haunting?(Hulu)
If you like found footage movies and surveillance footage movies, why you wouldn't like this movie is beyond me. If you are tired of this genre or don't like it, you should definitely NOT watch this. Another movie where almost every kill happens off screen. Oh yea, the family in this movie WILLINGLY move into the Amityville House...which has switched coasts and houses...and looks nothing like the picture on the 'cover'. - DirectorM.J. BassettStarsAdelaide ClemensKit HaringtonSean BeanWhen her adoptive father disappears, Sharon Da Silva is drawn into a strange and terrifying alternate reality that holds answers to the horrific nightmares that have plagued her since childhood.(Netflix)
Sucked bad. Hey Hollywood, video games are better than your movies...ESPECIALLY the ones you choose to make into movies. Give it up already. - DirectorGlenn CianoStarsRobert EnglundWilliam ForsytheJoey FatoneThis movie tells the story of a skeleton crew working the final shift at a soon to be demolished police station. The night takes a gruesome turn when the demon, Inkubus, calmly walks into the station holding the severed head of a murdered girl. Inkubus toys with the crew, allowing himself to be restrained, and begins to proudly confess to his litany of crimes, some dating back to the Middle Ages. Why? Inkubus has a score to settle with the one detective that almost put him away around thirteen years ago. To their dismay, the cops quickly become pawns in Inkubus' brutal crowning achievement of murder, gore, and mayhem. They ultimately realize it's his world, they only die in it.(Netflix)
This movie has Joey Fatone in the lead. The entire production crew is Italian(-American). I'm not saying this movie was made by the "Mafia", whatever that might be. I'm saying this is a 20 star movie and you should buy 10 copies on DVD and then buy everyone else you know 10 DVD's because it will be the greatest gift they ever received!!! - DirectorJoe GiannoneStarsGaylen RossTony NunziataHarriet BassA legendary psychopathic murderer stalks a summer camp.(Vudu)
This movie does NOT *beep* around. CLASSIC. - DirectorKimberly SeilhamerStarsTony ToddSally KirklandDouglas TaitA group of unsuspecting teens face a railroad reaper in his desert carnival.(Netflix)

Avoid at all costs. - DirectorBarry LevinsonStarsWill RogersKristen ConnollyKether DonohueChaos breaks out in a small Maryland town after an ecological disaster occurs.(Netflix)
Sucks so bad...even worse because this is a major Hollywood/Barry Levinson production found footage movie. This is as good as Hollywood can come up with for a found footage movie!? This is an incoherent mess and if you like watching bad frame rate mimicry of crappy webcams/videocams...enjoy yourself. This piece of crap was actually released in theaters. - DirectorSteve BeckStarsTony ShalhoubShannon ElizabethEmbeth DavidtzWhen Cyrus Kriticos, a very rich collector of unique things, dies, he leaves his house, fortune, and his prized collection of ghosts.(DVD)
