2019 Best Films
Like 1999 and 2009, it seems that when we reach the end of a decade we get immensely better and solid entertainment out of it. Masterpieces were put out left and right it seemed, as if there was at least one film out there for every person. Old and new filmmakers came with unique individual stories and ways of directing; there wasn't really a month without one or three great films.
A exciting time to be a film buff indeed.

- DirectorTrey Edward ShultsStarsTaylor RussellKelvin Harrison Jr.Alexa DemieTraces the journey of a suburban family - led by a well-intentioned but domineering father - as they navigate love, forgiveness, and coming together in the aftermath of a loss.low10/10, emotional, gut-retching, thrilling and everything above. Another achievement from Trey Edwards.

- DirectorCéline SciammaStarsNoémie MerlantAdèle HaenelLuàna BajramiOn an isolated island in Brittany at the end of the eighteenth century, a female painter is obliged to paint a wedding portrait of a young woman.high9/10 fierce and striking. Like an oil painting. Wonder if that's some Barry Lyndon tribute or what but it drives the film very well.
- DirectorNoah BaumbachStarsAdam DriverScarlett JohanssonJulia GreerNoah Baumbach's incisive and compassionate look at a marriage breaking up and a family staying together.9/10 terrific
- DirectorQuentin TarantinoStarsLeonardo DiCaprioBrad PittMargot RobbieA faded television actor and his stunt double strive to achieve fame and success in the final years of Hollywood's Golden Age in 1969 Los Angeles.low9/10, gets better with each watch as I thought it would. There's a lot of details to soak up that could be missed on just 1 viewing. This is a lot slower than his other films but as it goes on it sinks into it's world with lots of love and passion for the filmmaking and it's process. Sad to know there's only one left but that doesn't mean it hasn't been one wild ride with ole Tarantino. I don't think I've ever been disappointed with any of his films besides maybe Jackie Brown but again I need to resee it to fully see it's worth, still not a bad film and that means he's never made a bad film imo. My favorite part of course besides the writing is the reincorporation he uses and how his films seem like many other films (which I guess they are). Like a lost long vision come back to life from a golden age of movies. He also has a keen understanding of the right music and which scenes to use them in. The ending sequence has always been bitter sweet and is more reflection than inglorious bastards did which is why I like this a tad bit more.
- CreatorCraig MazinStarsJessie BuckleyJared HarrisStellan SkarsgårdIn April 1986, the city of Chernobyl in the Soviet Union suffers one of the worst nuclear disasters in the history of mankind. Consequently, many heroes put their lives on the line in the following days, weeks and months.low9/10, basically a cosmic horror but the thing is: this really happened and it was much scarier in real life. They did a fantastic job anyway translating these events and making them dramatic for the screen without rewriting history too much. One of its strongest attributes besides the writing is its sound design. You can hear how deadly it was for them as Geiger counters go off the rails in subtle ways like when they pick up rocks or when they look down into the eye of where the explosion was. Some parts of the plant hiss and moan like a big foreboding monster and the machinery feels like it could break any moment. The cinematography and color tone really feel fogged in this ethereal haze and really add to the atmosphere (literally in some ways lol). The acting and costume design is also on point and you can tell everyone is giving it their all. The makeup is scarily accurate too. This show shows really how fragile life is and will be fondly remembered.
- DirectorAri AsterStarsFlorence PughJack ReynorVilhelm BlomgrenA couple travels to Northern Europe to visit a rural hometown's fabled Swedish mid-summer festival. - DirectorDaniel ScheinertStarsMichael Abbott Jr.Virginia NewcombAndre HylandDick died last night, and Zeke and Earl don't want anybody finding out how. That's too bad though, cause news travels fast in small-town Alabama.lowtosolid8/10, one of the most hilarious and surprisingly fun movies of the year. watch with friends and you'll be having the time of your life. there is stuff under the surface if you want to look like the ironic soundtrack and music plus deceivingly deceptive subtle directing. definitely the most underrated movie of the year.
- StarsTony WalkerNicholas HitchonLynn JohnsonDirector Michael Apted revisits the same group of British-born adults after a seven-year wait. The subjects are interviewed as to the changes that have occurred in their lives during the last seven years.8/10
- DirectorRian JohnsonStarsDaniel CraigChris EvansAna de ArmasA detective investigates the death of the patriarch of an eccentric, combative family.low8-high7/10, a very well shot who-dunnit mystery inspired by clue and other mystery movies. The acting from the star-studded cast bring the script and movie to life. The directing too is finely-tuned and enjoyable in which ways it would go and have a double effect once you know the twist; making it more entertaining on the second watch. The music helps the atmosphere and while not catchy, it does the job well enough. You could say... it subverted my expectations. have a nice fuck and day you.

- DirectorTodd PhillipsStarsJoaquin PhoenixRobert De NiroZazie BeetzDuring the 1980s, a failed stand-up comedian is driven insane and turns to a life of crime and chaos in Gotham City while becoming an infamous psychopathic crime figure.low7/10, pretty great but does have some flaws like being too similar to Taxi Driver for my taste and lots of unnecessary things happen in order to make the plot work (mostly involving the waynes.) Performance easiest part to recommend, fantastic. The directing is fine and is probably this directors best work. The cinematography and camera work in general were serviceable for sure. The music despite here and there where it doesn't fit is subtle like the clothing (which is something this director has a nice eye for or he's just getting lucky). The writing at times is too on the nose though but when it is needed most it becomes engaging and stressful. Unrelated to that there is one scene where it drives home what is happening when it could have been a lot better if they didn't remind you what's happening (you'll know or already know what scene that is) and to be honest is easy to see coming a mile away. Still a remember able and buyable movie. And belongs on this list.
