- DirectorJosh TrankStarsMiles TellerKate MaraMichael B. JordanFour young outsiders teleport to an alternate and dangerous universe which alters their physical form in shocking ways. The four must learn to harness their new abilities and work together to save Earth from a former friend turned enemy.Josh Trank, the young filmmaker who surprised audiences with 2012's "Chronicle", ends up making one of the year's worst, and also the worst superhero film in recent memory. It is a work of sheer unfortunate bad luck on its director's part for trying, straining, so hard to make it stand out from the crowd by focusing on character development and universe-building, that the film just implodes. It's not over-the-top bad - rather, it is utterly bland, extremely boring for the first two-thirds, and devoid of life from every single frame, and wasting an ensemble of up-and-coming young starlets to a script that gives them little to nothing to do but mope, sulk and pose. "Fantastic Bore" would be a better name for this unfortunate snoozefest, which makes the prior two F4 films look like "Guardians of the Galaxy" by comparison.
- DirectorOlivier MegatonStarsLiam NeesonForest WhitakerMaggie GraceAccused of a ruthless murder he never committed or witnessed, Bryan Mills goes on the run and brings out his particular set of skills to find the true killer and clear his name. Here's a DIY "Taken 3", go home and watch "The Fugitive" again. It is a far better film. Liam Neeson is not at fault for this, but director Olivier Megaton hacks and slashes what moments of potentially heart pounding action into an ADD submission with a migraine, because every microsecond cut contains some of the worst shaky cam I've ever seen in a mainstream action picture. Quite simply one of the worst action films in a while. Never mind the plot, get the aspirin.
- DirectorCamille DelamarreStarsEd SkreinLoan ChabanolRay StevensonIn the south of France, former special-ops mercenary Frank Martin enters into a game of chess with a femme-fatale and her three sidekicks who are looking for revenge against a sinister Russian kingpin. It's stupid, absurd, and forgettable within 10 minutes after it ends. In other words, typical "Transporter", although this feels like another "Greatest Hits" album of the franchise rather than a legit new entry itself. It has to be said that greenhorn star Ed Skrein is ironically no Jason Statham; he's blander and stiffer than the original star, but there's room for improvement. It isn't in this franchise.
- DirectorRob CohenStarsJennifer LopezRyan GuzmanKristin ChenowethA woman, separated from her unfaithful husband, falls for a younger man who has moved in next door, but their torrid affair soon takes a dangerous turn.An enjoyably campy stalker thriller screaming to get out of a dull one. J. Lo's attractive physique is wasted in this flatlining potboiler as she shags the attractive, and soon to be insane Ryan Guzman ("Step Up: All In") in a predictable game of cat and mouse by bored filmmaker Rob Cohen ("The Fast and the Furious", "xXx"). The final 15 minutes are what this whole movie should've been, a laughably over the top and violent finale, soul-grinding fun that would make 90s-era Steven Seagal proud.
- DirectorFrancis LawrenceStarsJennifer LawrenceJosh HutchersonLiam HemsworthKatniss and a team of rebels from District 13 prepare for the final battle that will decide the fate of Panem.Alas, "The Hunger Games" ends not with a bang, but with a whimper; it's saying something that the good parts (i.e. good character development, Jennifer Lawrence's dogged commitment to her character, and a few good action sequences) are torpedoed in favour of unnecessary padding (annoying YA angst). That the doom-and-gloom feel of the entire film deters rather than aids the film is another flaw - you're not supposed to think "Thank god it's over" once the credits roll, especially after three films that were kind of compelling to watch. This left a lot to be desired, and ends up unfortunately as the worst film in the franchise.
- DirectorKyle BaldaPierre CoffinStarsSandra BullockJon HammMichael KeatonMinions Stuart, Kevin, and Bob are recruited by Scarlet Overkill, a supervillain who, alongside her inventor husband Herb, hatches a plot to take over the world. At the risk of making myself sound like a bitter, old-fashioned man, I've decided not to follow the crowd and declare that, this is not a good movie, folks. It's an incoherent string of troll gags tied together with lazy writing, as if the writers couldn't give two rats' asses about the consistency of their script and decided to throw whatever they can think of to the screen and hoping it'll stick. Here's the kicker - most of them do not. Even the biggest "Despicable Me" fan might find this a waste of time, money and effort.
- DirectorWes BallStarsDylan O'BrienKaya ScodelarioThomas Brodie-SangsterAfter having escaped the Maze, the Gladers now face a new set of challenges on the open roads of a desolate landscape filled with unimaginable obstacles. Was this movie even necessary? There is not an original bone in its body, and saying its one of the better films of the mid-August-mid-September dreck isn't saying much. It is better than the first though, there's bigger and better setpieces that try their darndest to entertain, and director Wes Ball keeps things moving along a nice clip and tries to set it apart from the usual YA/post apocalyptic clout, but do we NEED this movie??
- DirectorGenndy TartakovskyStarsAdam SandlerAndy SambergSelena GomezDracula and his friends try to bring out the monster in his half human, half vampire grandson in order to keep Mavis from leaving the hotel.Have kids? They'll love it. Just you and the missus? Bring the iPad and earphones. Read a book. Go to the park. Trust me on this. I do not envy families who bring their kids to this.
- DirectorRobert SchwentkeStarsShailene WoodleyAnsel ElgortTheo JamesBeatrice Prior must confront her inner demons and continue her fight against a powerful alliance which threatens to tear her society apart with the help from others on her side. The sequel to "Divergent" is an utterly joyless bore from start to finish, needing a serious lightening up and a drastic script rewrite. Hanging onto the valiant effort of talented and rising star Shailene Woodley as all other actors surrounding her sleepwalk through this dreck for an easy paycheck, this Young-Adult cliched mess destroys whatever goodwill the first film had. The stupidity of some of the main characters baffled me as they face increasing amounts angst and grief in a vain attempt to come off as "emotionally powerful" and "character-driven" and I found myself increasingly not caring for any one of them as the film progressed, it is here that the entire film feels gloomy and lethargic without even lifting off, taking every. single. moment. seriously as if every. second. counts; representing the voice of the current generation of angst teens, I suppose, rallying against the ways of the old 'oppressive' generation. "The Hunger Games" already exists and it's a far better film series, and that's a major compliment to "The Hunger Games". Skip this, watch the first "Divergent" and "Hunger Games", and "The Village" all over again.
- DirectorPierre MorelStarsSean PennIdris ElbaJasmine TrincaA sniper on a mercenary assassination team kills the minister of mines of the Congo. Terrier's successful kill shot forces him into hiding. Returning to the Congo years later, he becomes the target of a hit squad himself. You know what's worse than a stupid action movie? A dull action movie. This has zero originality that it should've been a DTV (direct-to-video) release. And even then, most DTVs won't be as boring or poorly paced as this one. Shocking, considering the calibre of talent involved, ranging from esteemed actors like Sean Penn, Javier Bardem and Ray Winstone, as well as director Pierre Morel of the first "Taken". What happened?
- DirectorDavid KoeppStarsJohnny DeppGwyneth PaltrowEwan McGregorJuggling angry Russians, the British Mi5, and an international terrorist, debonair art dealer and part-time rogue Charlie Mortdecai races to recover a stolen painting rumored to contain a code that leads to lost gold.Something is very, very wrong when "Movie 43" is funnier than this absolute, complete failure from Johnny Depp and co. There are times where I felt like walking out, but like a ghastly train crash happening in front of your eyes, my morbid sense of curiosity took over to see just how far worse this disgrace of a comedy would go. Sadly, it was not disproven. Depp, you need to get it together. You're better than this.
- DirectorSam Taylor-JohnsonStarsDakota JohnsonJamie DornanJennifer EhleLiterature student Anastasia Steele's life changes forever when she meets handsome, yet tormented, billionaire Christian Grey. You'd be hard-pressed to find a more boring, completely unbelievable, incredibly stupid Twilight/porno-fueled, BDSM-themed MTV music video this year. This film only serves to please potentially desperate housewives or hopeless female romantics, that, frankly, shouldn't pay good money to see this disrespectful, low-brow crap. I'd buy the soundtrack though.
- DirectorJoe WrightStarsLevi MillerHugh JackmanGarrett HedlundTwelve-year-old orphan Peter is spirited away to the magical world of Neverland, where he finds both fun and danger, and ultimately discovers his destiny: to become the hero who will be forever known as Peter Pan.This is a movie that hates its audience, that thinks we're all a bunch of pansies who'll buy anything Hollywood churns out, made by a director who has contempt for both the mainstream audience and the Hollywood reboot system by perhaps intentionally desecrating J.M. Barrie's beloved childhood classic with a bombardment of plot holes and bad CGI, gift-wrapped with a message saying "f * c k you, audience!" Well, f * c k you too, movie! Everyone involved with this steampunk-misdirected movie should be ashamed of themselves for making Barrie spin in his grave.
