- DirectorSonja De VriesStarsJennifer Maytorena Taylor"Gay Cuba takes a candid look at one of Cuba's most controversial human rights issues: the treatment of gay and lesbian people since the Cuban Revolution of 1959. This one hour documentary takes the viewer through three decades of conflict and transformation, providing insight into Cuban culture and society rarely seen. With a dynamic cast of characters, including a radio show host, a union leader, a drag queen and a musician, Gay Cuba takes us through the personal experiences of family, society, political institutions and culture. Gay and lesbian Cubans tell their stories of police harassment and gay-positive psychologists, accounts of expulsion from political organizations and election to political leadership. Gay Cuba demonstrates the sometimes contradictory and always changing reality in a society that considers itself to be "in the 36th year of Revolution."
- DirectorNéstor AlmendrosOrlando Jiménez LealStarsLorenzo MonrealJorge LagoJulio MedinaAn examination of Cuba's "moral purges" that began in 1964 with UMAP camps for those suspected of or found guilty of "improper conduct." Key moments brought outside attention to these policies: the defection of ballet dancers in Paris in 1966, a 48-hour period in 1980 when more than 11,000 Cubans sought asylum in Havana's Peruvian embassy, and the brief detention of writer Virgilio Piñera. Interviews with exiles take up most of the film as they tell their stories and ponder the Castro government's arrest and detention of persons with effeminate mannerisms: what the state calls "extravagant behavior." In essence, the film exposes the Cuban state's homophobic, petit bourgeois nature.

- DirectorEduardo SuarezIn 1979, Jon Alpert, a young journalist from New York who worked for NBC and had already accomplished several journalistic works in Cuba, had the audacity to ask the Cuban government to accompany Fidel Castro on his plane to The United Nations. Fidel was going to give a speech as President of the Non-Aligned Countries and Jon got permission from Fidel himself to a rare and never before granted access to a communication outlet, especially in the United States. Since the incident with Immigration of the Cuban delegation upon arrival in New York City until his return to Havana, Fidel allowed Jon and his cameras to enter where he was staying at the Cuban Mission in New York, including his bedroom. Frank Vales, Fidel's then translator, was also on this trip and attests to Jon and Fidel's rapport. You could say that besides being a never before seen documentary, "A Trip with Fidel" has traits that resemble what many years later could be seen as a reality show where Jon captured a level of intimacy never seen before without losing sight of him for a minute. The documentary doesn't bring to light the Head of State that we all know, but simply Fidel, the person on the trip that at that moment many consider was at the peak of his political career.

In 1968, Castro took filmmaker and activist Saul Landau on a weeklong jeep ride through the eastern mountains. There, he plays baseball with a group of peasants, visits his pre-school and trades jokes with a 98-year old man. Fidel also listens to the people's concerns about food distribution, bad roads and transportation. Landau captures Cuba's revolutionary chief early in the morning in his tent. The camera zooms in on his dirty and delicate fingernails holding his trademark cigar while he tells a story of SÃmon Bolivar and offers tactical advice to guerrilla warriors throughout the Third World. The film contains rare and fascinating archive footage of the Bay of Pigs invasion and scenes of Che Guevara alongside interviews with political prisoners. Spectacular photography and editing with hot Cuban music provide the cinematic aesthetics that give this film beautiful form to accompany its exciting content.
