- DirectorLukas MarxtThe Salton Sea at the edge of the Imperial Valley was used by the US military for bomb tests in the 1940s; in the fifties and sixties it was opened up to tourists and reinvented as the Californian Riviera. Fertilizer run-off from the nearby farms caused the lake's ecosystem to begin collapsing in the 1970s. Since then all the facilities and towns located on its shores have become entirely derelict. The lake's continuing desiccation and the resulting release of toxic particulate matter puts the Salton Sea at risk of becoming one of the biggest health hazards in US history.

Reason enough for the two creatures who landed in the new spot with the giant to jump into the vast blackness. Love in outer space. They become one with the new world. Solar Walk follows the journey of individuals and their creations in space. In its series of sequences and situations, Solar Walk recalls the liberating effect of automatic writing, which was employed by the surrealists in the 1920s as the basis for a new kind of creativity. They saw automatic writing as a possibility to activate the unconscious, spontaneous, dream-like and repressed elements of human inspiration. Space as a place for reflecting on one's own behaviour and the question of perception. Every action is only then meaningful when something is truly created or when one is really taking care of someone else. Every action is only existent from the perspective of the individual itself. 'Whoever you are. Where you are. And whatever you are. You are in the middle,' Alan Watts reflects in David OReilly's Everything (Berlinale Shorts 2017). Bucsi pursues this question further, entering into a dialogue.
- DirectorInes MoldavskiStarsInes MoldavskiThe Men Behind the Wall offers a unique look at the Israeli-Palestinian conflict through the swipes of a dating app Tinder, as an Israeli woman is being suggested meetings with (Palestinian) men who live on the other side of the barrier. Where do boundaries begin and where do they end? Ines Moldavsky personally sets out to discover the answer to the question, and then to overstep these limits. An experimental approach to both current social issues and intimate human interactions, the film emphasises the absurdity of power and segregation, and, further, that of stereotypes and gender roles in the digital age.

- DirectorMónica LairanaStarsAlejo MangoSandra SandriniA man and a woman, naked in bed together. They attempt to make love, but are no longer capable of finding a shared rhythm. She begins to cry, and he brings her a glass of water. They both remain silent - perhaps everything has already been said. Before entering the bedroom, the camera first explores the other rooms in the house. It seems that life no longer takes place there. The camera lingers, as if sensing what has happened. It observes a separation - or rather the outcome of a separation. It registers gestures and glances here that speak of an intimacy that isn't part of the present any more, such as when the man and the woman, who are no longer young, look at photographs from the start of their relationship. Beautiful moments alternate with comical and sorrowful ones. She brings him vitamin tablets. When clearing out the wardrobe, they look at one another lovingly: When did they each wear this or that piece of clothing and in what situation? The two of them are usually nude. It is a nakedness that is not about exposing anything, perhaps more a habit from days spent together, or a response to the unrelenting heat. The only sound comes from the fan that provides fresh air.
- DirectorLuise DonschenStarsJohn MalkovichWolfgang ForstmeierElija PottA person enters the frame dressed up as a bird. In a dressing room, John Malkovich sheds the costume of Casanova. An orgasm and a dance. Casanova Gene is a film about desire.

- DirectorRosa Hannah ZieglerFamily Life was shot during a year in a small village in Saxony-Anhalt. Biggi lives in an old farmstead with her 2 daughters, four dogs, cats and horses and her ex-boyfriend Alfred. Biggi and Alfred don't have jobs and lead a very modest existence. They express their feelings and moods by singing their favourite songs. Biggi grew up as an adopted child, Alfred as a child in residential care. Both Denise and Saskia also spent time in care in the past. The fourteen and seventeen year old daughters always find reasons to stay at home, either because of heartache about Kevin or other more serious mental problems. Saskia came back from her residential care placement only recently and is trying to settle at home. Biggi just wants peace and her ex-boyfriend Alfred is longing for a communal life if it weren't for the tensions between him, Biggi and the girls. Family Life is about violence, about neglect, about what comes to light when you live on the edge, if you have dreams of a different life and eventually you realise that you always "walk in circles, and the walls get higher and higher." That's what Alfred said. When he started talking about this circle, spoke about this cycle, which is so difficult to break out of, I knew that was the subject of my film. We need to look very carefully and without prejudice what has shaped people. For instance origin, social class, family, prison, residential care, and feelings like love, dependencies and places, like a secure place, a place to retreat, a place of dreams, no matter how inhospitable it may seem to outsiders. We accompany them in their everyday life filled with conflict, learn something about their dreams, their fears and their hopes, and how hard it is to break out of a circle (cycle). At the end there is a departure. Alfred stays behind. Family life with horses, dogs and cats, TV, PC and smartphone.

- DirectorRobert FischerStarsEdgar ReitzUla StöcklKristine de LoupFor over half a century, the filmmaker Edgar Reitz, one of the signatories of the Oberhausen Manifesto and a pioneer of epic film narration, has explored, as a practitioner and theoretician, the rules and limits of cinema, which he always seeks to break and extend in new ways. One example of his tireless search and research are the Geschichten vom Kübelkind, which he co-directed with Ula Stöckl in 1969/70, 22 absurdly funny, subversive and anarchistic short films of different lengths, which consciously oppose all conventions, with incredible success. The films remain unrivalled in their Dadaistic inventiveness. The documentary Der Film verlässt das Kino: Vom Kübelkind-Experiment und anderen Utopien centres on how the Geschichten vom Kübelkind, now rediscovered and restored, actually came about. Edgar Reitz, Ula Stöckl, Werner Herzog, Alexander Kluge and other filmmakers and contemporaries look back on the conditions that made this and other such visionary projects possible 50 years ago. They are all concerned with the question: What will the future of moving pictures look like.
