Top movies of 2017
2017 has been quite a good year, with 13 titles rated above 7 (compared to 6 titles in 2016, 10 in 2015 and 8 in 2014) and it also had some 9s in there as well. There still quite a few movies for me to watch so it might even get better.
In general I would say that the year had 1 excellent film: "Loving Vincent"
4 very good films: The thid murder, Side job,Dunkirk, Breadwinner
8 nice films (the rest on this list)
and like every year a bunch of medioucre and bad films (everything that didnt make it onto this list)

- DirectorDK WelchmanHugh WelchmanStarsDouglas BoothJerome FlynnRobert GulaczykIn a story depicted in oil painted animation, a young man comes to the last hometown of painter Vincent van Gogh to deliver the troubled artist's final letter and ends up investigating his final days there.A very unique movie, artistically but also story wise. The story is kinda a mix of a documentory style and detective drama. I made a review about the movie, so go read that.
- DirectorKore-eda HirokazuStarsMasaharu FukuyamaKoji YakushoSuzu HiroseA courtroom drama centered around the murder of a factory president. The cinematography of this movie is spectacular. Koreeda really outdid himself with this. I also made a review on this movie, so check that one out as well.
- DirectorRyûichi HirokiStarsKumi TakiuchiKen MitsuishiKengo KôraBased on the novel "Kanojo no Jinsei wa Machigai ja Nai" (literal translation: Her life is not at fault) by Director Hiroki, it is a powerful story of survivors, who are all trying to find their own silver linings in life. This is one of the movies that really made me think, so I am still not quite sure how to rate this. I really need some more watch throughs. The Japanese are really masters of Symbolism and far surpass the likes of David Lynch and Charlie Kaufman. This is also the last movie I did a review on, on this list, so go check that one out as well
- DirectorChristopher NolanStarsFionn WhiteheadBarry KeoghanMark RylanceAllied soldiers from Belgium, the British Commonwealth and Empire, and France are surrounded by the German Army and evacuated during a fierce battle in World War II.Christopher Nolan really showed his directoral talent with this. Going away from the typical sci-fi thrillers into a hard war drama without ANY characters and suceeding is quite an achievment and I think he gets only very little praise for that. What kinda buggs me about the movie is that it never really get bloody or gross, as if it really tried hard to be PG13. Also the historical accuracy is questionable (not only because of the missing blood)
- DirectorNora TwomeyStarsSaara ChaudrySoma ChhayaNoorin GulamgausIn 2001, Afghanistan is under the control of the Taliban. When her father is captured, a determined young girl disguises herself as a boy in order to provide for her family.A small but very strong movie, which may be a bit exaggerated (who knows) but the message is in the right heart in my opinion. Also it looks gorgeous.
- DirectorIldikó EnyediStarsAlexandra BorbélyGéza MorcsányiRéka TenkiWhen slaughterhouse workers Endre and Mária discover they share the same dreams, where they meet in a forest as deer and fall in love, they decide to make their dreams come true, but it's difficult in real life.A very interesting movie that has many different aspects to it. The start pulled me in with showing the inner workings of a slaughter house. Then you have the unique idea of the dreams in the middle with also a very unique love story. And some scene towards the end were just beautifully crafted. Also it introduced me to Laura Marling, so it has a very nice soundtrack
- DirectorYue DongStarsYihong DuanYiyan JiangYuan DuA man who is laid off from a steel factory desperately wants to chase a serial killer in a small city in Southern China. The most rainy movie there is. I think ovcer 95% of this movies scene have rain in it. But otherwise a very well crafted crime drama. Especially its psychological aspect was stunning.
- DirectorDenis VilleneuveStarsHarrison FordRyan GoslingAna de ArmasYoung Blade Runner K's discovery of a long-buried secret leads him to track down former Blade Runner Rick Deckard, who's been missing for thirty years. Not as deep as the original (and that one wasnt even that deep) but otherwise a nice sci fi movie with great cinematography. The story became somewhat clichee though and including Harris Ford was kinda unecessary.
- DirectorZiad DoueiriStarsAdel KaramKamel El BashaCamille SalamehAfter an emotional exchange between a Lebanese Christian and a Palestinian refugee escalates, the men end up in a court case that gets national attention.Very entertaining and interesting movie. It could have ended a bit earlier but otherwise very well made. Its always interesting to see movies about divergences of people groups done by the countries involved to see different perspectives than the usual hollywood one.
- DirectorYukiko MishimaStarsRena TanakaTadanobu AsanoMiu AraiA 40-year old man sees his life change when his wife gets pregnant. He already has a daughter from his first marriage whom he rarely sees and two step-daughters, from his wife's first marriage. The youngest of his step-daughters is looking forward to a baby brother or sister, but the oldest doesn't welcome the news and suddenly decides that she wants to live with her father. And as if that were not enough trouble, he is forced out of his good office job into an inferior position.A very well exploration of modern family life in Japan with lots of divorces and raising children of other people. Well paced and well acted
- DirectorKyoko MiyakeStarsRio HiiragiYuzuha OdaMasayoshi SakaiGirl bands and their pop music permeate every moment of Japanese life. Following an aspiring pop singer and her fans, Tokyo Idols explores a cultural phenomenon driven by an obsession with young female sexuality, and the growing disconnect between men and women in hyper-modern societiesA very nice documentory on the life of an idol. For me its always hard to compare documentories with other movies since they are so different in their approach, but to promote the movie more I included it in this list.
- DirectorDee ReesStarsJason MitchellCarey MulliganJason ClarkeTwo men return home from World War II to work on a farm in rural Mississippi, where they struggle to deal with racism and adjusting to life after war.A very interesting story about racism in America. Kinda weird how a shitty movie like "get out" gets so much attention because of its message about rasism but a very well acted and well made movie like Mudbound is completely ignored.
- DirectorRhonda BarakaStarsNicole Ari ParkerBoris KodjoeAlix LapriEbony (Nicole Ari Parker) and Michael (Boris Kodjoe) were forced into a modern "shotgun" wedding after becoming teenage parents, putting their personal goals on hold in order to support their family. Amazingly, the two high school sweethearts managed to overcome the odds and establish a seemingly ideal life for themselves. However, the success that initially was meant to strengthen their family has become the very thing that is driving them apart. As a result, Michael desperately tries to hold onto everything he's worked his entire life to gain. This leads the family on an unconventional adventure to restore the faith, hope, and trust that initially brought them together.A very interesting sci fi comedy with a nice pacing and an neat little story. Nothing to really wrap your head around but something to enjoy on the side.
