- DirectorYorgos LanthimosStarsOlivia ColmanEmma StoneRachel WeiszIn early 18th-century England, the status quo at the court is upset when a new servant arrives and endears herself to a frail Queen Anne. This is so ridiculous funny and bizarre. Though it manages to deliver a great image of the 18th century and the royals of the time. The three leading ladies are on point. More authentic than any other period drama. And it has one of the best production designs I've ever seen.
- DirectorPaul McGuiganStarsAnnette BeningJamie BellKenneth CranhamA romance sparks between a young actor and a Hollywood leading lady. One of the best movie twists of all time. The story is very lovely and the couple has a great chemistry. Also the image given of Liverpool at the time and the pop culture references are great. On the other hand the movie breaks your heart.
- DirectorAri AsterStarsToni ColletteMilly ShapiroGabriel ByrneA grieving family is haunted by tragic and disturbing occurrences.Paranormal horror, haunted house, witches, demons-there are many aspects of horror which the movie takes in. Yet it manages to don't confuse these different types of horror and adds the best from each genre to a masterpiece. Toni Colette is perfect in every way and almost part of every scary scene. She also brings a human side to the story, like her grief. The movie is probably the best horror of this generation.
- DirectorGilles Paquet-BrennerStarsMax IronsStefanie MartiniGlenn CloseIn Agatha Christie's most twisted tale, a spy-turned-private-detective is lured by his former lover to catch her grandfather's murderer before Scotland Yard exposes dark family secrets.A great attempt on one of Christies most shocking novels. The cast again fits perfectly and delivers a thrilling crime game where the suspects change easily and it's hard to find the clues for the real murderer.
- DirectorFrançois OzonStarsMelvil PoupaudDenis MénochetSwann ArlaudThree men, abused by the same priest during their childhood, engage in a fight for justice that will expose their personal experiences and question their life with their wife, family, and colleagues. The Berlinale surprise of the year. This french drama about pedophilia in church is way too long and looses it's story lines too often and then takes completely new ones in, but the story (it's a real one) behind this movie is one that must be told. And especially the beginning of the movie is very strong. Though it falls flat in the middle, it catches up in the end and leaves an impact.
- DirectorMimi LederStarsFelicity JonesArmie HammerJustin TherouxThe true story of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, her struggles for equal rights, and the early cases of a historic career that lead to her nomination and confirmation as U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice.I really like this movie! I just can't tell if I like it so much, because RBG is such a great and interesting person or because the movie itself is awesome. I must admit, it's kinda hard to fail portraying this story. But i loved it.
- DirectorRob MarshallStarsEmily BluntLin-Manuel MirandaBen WhishawA few decades after her original visit, Mary Poppins, the magical nanny, returns to help the Banks siblings and Michael's children through a difficult time in their lives.Throwback to my childhood. I love what they did with the ideas of the original movie and how they turned them into something new but yet familiar. Very enjoyable and lovely.
- DirectorBradley CooperStarsLady GagaBradley CooperSam ElliottA musician helps a young singer find fame as age and alcoholism send his own career into a downward spiral. The next remake of this musical. And it works for me. The country vs modern pop story and how the singers become machines for their management are portrayed great as a conflict for a rising star and her fading boyfriend. From beginning to end the story is developing and touching, surrounded by great music. I really like that the songs here are part of the singers life, so the musical becomes more realistic.
- DirectorPernille Fischer ChristensenStarsAlba AugustMaria BonnevieTrine DyrholmBiopic of Swedish writer Astrid Lindgren, the author of numerous children's books and creator of Pippi Longstocking. The movie manages to pay justice to this great author and shows aspects of her life which were unfamiliar to me. It shows great the fight of a young woman for a live she owns herself and unlashes powerful moments. The only thing missing is her beginning to write her books.
- DirectorGreg BerlantiStarsNick RobinsonJennifer GarnerJosh DuhamelSimon Spier keeps a huge secret from his family, his friends and all of his classmates: he's gay. When that secret is threatened, Simon must face everyone and come to terms with his identity.Another feel good romantic comedy. But I think (and I speak with a personal background) the struggles of coming out in school, to the family and the self conflicts are presented very good.
- DirectorMike NewellStarsJessica Brown FindlayTom CourtenayMichiel HuismanIn the aftermath of World War II, a writer forms an unexpected bond with the residents of Guernsey Island when she decides to write a book about their experiences during the war. Then she learns the secret they are afraid to reveal.Obviously this is a romantic feel good movie like many others, but the dramatic plot influence with the nazi invasion and the war times are adding a good note to the story.
- DirectorPeter FarrellyStarsViggo MortensenMahershala AliLinda CardelliniA working-class Italian-American bouncer becomes the driver for an African-American classical pianist on a tour of venues through the 1960s American South. Here are many scenes where you laugh hard. The chemistry between the actors is so good, that they could become an iconic comedy duo for ages. I also like the story, especially because it shows the stupidity behind racism. I don't like the really forced aspects on tolerance (like the shower scene). It felt unreal and dishonest-but for the Oscars it played out as planned.
- DirectorCory FinleyStarsOlivia CookeAnya Taylor-JoyAnton YelchinTwo upper-class teenage girls in suburban Connecticut rekindle their unlikely friendship after years of growing apart. Together, they hatch a plan to solve both of their problems-no matter what the cost. Not much to say to this one. It was well played, a great plot and very good use of techniques. But it still fell flat at many points and I can't figure out what the aim was behind this movie.
- DirectorYvan AttalStarsDaniel AuteuilCamélia JordanaYasin HouichaAfter an incident, a brilliant professor known for his outbursts is forced to mentor the student he wronged for a speech contest.French comedies about society problems are adorable. They transport the problems (here racism in academic environments + the difficulties for outsiders to find acceptance in their area) very clever with nice jokes. After a while the movie tries to switch to a drama, which doesn't work for me. But the comedy parts are very good.
- DirectorPawel PawlikowskiStarsJoanna KuligTomasz KotBorys SzycIn the 1950s, a music director falls in love with a singer and tries to persuade her to flee communist Poland for France. The music here is just outstanding. All the songs and the soundtrack are pure perfection. The story lacks heart, its hard to feel with the characters and the tempo is wrong. It starts very slow to certainly rush through the last 30 minutes. It left me unaffected, which is bad for a drama. The camera work here by the way is awesome.
- DirectorSusan JohnsonStarsLana CondorNoah CentineoJanel ParrishA teenage girl's secret love letters are exposed and wreak havoc on her love life.Kinda cute teen romantic comedy, which is funny to watch. There is nothing innovative going on, but a solid attempt to challenge the 90s/00s classics.
- DirectorWash WestmorelandStarsKeira KnightleyFiona ShawDominic WestColette is pushed by her husband to write novels under his name. Upon their success, she fights to make her talents known, challenging gender norms.Colette is an interesting historic figure, but her movie counterpart is not. The plot gives her way too limited space to develop and become the strong feministic figure she is today. Just in the end she starts to rebel. Also some love scenes were too long, because they didn't add anything to the story and streched the running time.
- DirectorGary RossStarsSandra BullockCate BlanchettAnne HathawayDebbie Ocean gathers an all-female crew to attempt an impossible heist at New York City's annual Met Gala. This was good, because it never tried to be an action movie, it went for the comedic way and the actresses are all so great, that it was pretty funny. It was a good choice to limit Rihannas screen time to almost zero, so the brilliant women could play it off. The little cameos of the Oceans Series were well placed.
- DirectorTate TaylorStarsEmily BluntHaley BennettRebecca FergusonA divorcee becomes entangled in a missing persons investigation that promises to send shockwaves throughout her life.Off course the movie is not as good as the novel, but it's was a nice attempt to transfer it. The story kept it's tempo and suspense/thrill, though some aspects got lost. Also the transfer from the UK to New York didn't really work for me. Over all it was good, with an excellent Emily Blunt.
- DirectorRoar UthaugStarsAlicia VikanderDominic WestWalton GogginsLara Croft, the fiercely independent daughter of a missing adventurer, must push herself beyond her limits when she discovers the island where her father, Lord Richard Croft disappeared.I like the idea of having a vulnerable and struggling Lara rather than the sexy vamp version. But the story is changed to it's worse. The video game had a great story, just transfer it to a movie and done. And I expect more action than I have seen here.
- DirectorJohn Francis DaleyJonathan GoldsteinStarsJason BatemanRachel McAdamsKyle ChandlerA group of friends who meet regularly for game nights find themselves entangled in a real-life mystery when the shady brother of one of them is seemingly kidnapped by dangerous gangsters.I really like the idea behind this comedy and there are some jokes which landed on point. But after an hour the story gets lame and the jokes start to repeat.
- DirectorGianmaria PezzatoStarsAurora MoroniElla StocktonStefano Rossi GiordaniA fan made prequel to the Harry Potter series based on Tom Riddle and his progression to becoming The Dark Lord.In comparison to this movies here, it just can't be placed higher. But it's enjoyable, well done and you really feel the heart they put into it.
- DirectorOl ParkerStarsLily JamesAmanda SeyfriedMeryl StreepFive years after the events of Mamma Mia! (2008), Sophie prepares for the grand reopening of the Hotel Bella Donna as she learns more about her mother's past.Wat to do if you have an idea for a prequel and one for the sequel-right, put two half baked stories in one movie and hope no one will notice. Everything here feels unfinished. There are so big plot mistakes (like Donnas mother died, how can she be in this movie), with Cher s casting being the biggest one. Also Meryl Streep is missing, as she was the best thing in the first movie.
- DirectorJ.A. BayonaStarsChris PrattBryce Dallas HowardRafe SpallWhen the island's dormant volcano begins roaring to life, Owen and Claire mount a campaign to rescue the remaining dinosaurs from this extinction-level event. How often can you re-do the same story over and over? The story was just stupid! it didn't fix at many points and the action becomes boring after 4 movies of the same kind.
