- DirectorYash ChopraStarsAmitabh BachchanShashi KapoorNirupa RoyVijay struggles as a dockworker and eventually becomes a leading figure of the underworld, while his younger brother Ravi is an educated, upright policeman. This divide causes problems in their relationship. This film came in 1975 (was being simultaneously filmed with Sholay for Amitabh) when Amitabh Bachchan had established himself as the angry young man, especially post Zanjeer (1972) fame, and paired him with Yash Chopra and the most expensive scriptwriters Salim-Javed with him once again. Anyway, this is a classic story about two brothers: Ravi and Vijay. Vijay (Amitabh) goes on to become a gunda/smuggler/don and Ravi (Shashi) goes on to become a police officer, and that's where the title comes from because various barriers are formed, not least moral, social and emotional barriers. Of course then we have the mother (Nirupa Roy) stuck in the middle of the two brothers. Amitabh Bachchan just blows you away as Vijay and very good performances are also given by Shashi Kapoor, Nirupa Roy and the female leads (not least Parveen Babi in her role). So, basically, we have a piece of work that has been very carefully scripted with complex characters, excellent performances and good music. A timeless classic from Yash Chopra (director) that nobody can't not have in their home collection.
- DirectorVishal BhardwajStarsAjay DevgnKareena KapoorSaif Ali KhanA politically-minded enforcer's misguided trust in his lieutenant leads him to suspect his wife of infidelity in this adaptation of Shakespeare's 'Othello'.Although this didn't do so well in India, it did amazing business overseas, not least here in the UK and in the USA. It is Vishal Bhardwaj's adaptation of William Shakespeare's Othello. Of course this is a story of political heights, ambition, insecurities and betrayal and has been superbly adapted. This is packed with good performances, not least by Ajay Devgan, Kareena Kapoor and Konkona Sen Sharma, but for me Saif Ali Khan steals the show as Langada Tyagi. Vivek Oberoi is also good in a supporting role. This is an incredibly well made fillm with great performances that's really not one to be missed.
- DirectorChandra Prakash DwivediStarsUrmila MatondkarManoj BajpayeeSanjay SuriIn the days leading up to Partition, a Hindu woman is abducted by a Muslim man. Soon, she finds herself not only forced into marriage, but living in a new country as the borders between India and Pakistan are drawn. This is basically a thought provoking tale, based on the 20th century novel of the same name, about the time of the partition when Indian sub-continent. was split up and asks a very important question that shouldn't be ignored. Urmila is absolutely superb as is Manoj Bajpayee. This was critically acclaimed in both India and Pakistan. Debutant director Chandra Prakash Dwivedi chose something really challenging for his first film and did it really well.
