Films I Would Have Made Myself
These are stories brought to life through film that I would have made myself, had they not already existed. The way these films are shot are exactly the same way I would have done it myself. Literally, these films depressed me at first viewing because they were not only stories I wanted to tell but shot for shot or even better than what I could have done.

- DirectorSam RaimiStarsBruce CampbellSarah BerryDan HicksAsh Williams, the lone survivor of an earlier onslaught of flesh-possessing spirits, holes up in a cabin with a group of strangers while the demons continue their attack.Saw Evil Dead 2 in 1999 after writing and directing 3 of my own "films" in High School (40-100 min. 8mm Handycam videos). Watching Evil Dead 2 was like Sam Raimi was telling his story through my eyes. Shot in the exact same style as I thought I had been original in creating. Sam beat me to it and hats off to him for that!
- DirectorLars von TrierStarsBjörkCatherine DeneuveDavid MorseAn Eastern European US immigrant with a love for musicals has to cope with the gradual loss of her vision. After film school I knew how I wanted to tell my stories with a camera. I wanted to tell stories shot on video, as if they were documentaries, blurring the audiences perception of fantasy and reality. Lars von Trier then made this film which is almost exactly the same story I had written about an innocent woman being wronged by the few people she trusted. The only difference between 'Dancer in the Dark' and the story I wanted to bring to screen was that I never had any intentions to make a musical. This is better than the story I would have told.
- DirectorDanny BoyleStarsCillian MurphyNaomie HarrisChristopher EcclestonFour weeks after a mysterious, incurable virus spreads throughout the UK, a handful of survivors try to find sanctuary.Shot for shot how I wanted to make an apocalyptic horror piece. What was most awesome about Danny Boyle's 28 Days Later was the music. I had never heard such an excellent rock soundtrack, now bands like Godspeed You Black Emperor!, Mogwai and Explosions in the Sky are what I listen to most.
- DirectorGus Van SantStarsElias McConnellAlex FrostEric DeulenSeveral ordinary high school students go through their daily routine as two others prepare for something more malevolent.Literally shot for shot, exactly what I wanted to do with a project called Random Acts of Violence. The camera movements through-out Elephant are exactly like I shot the interior scenes of my high school films. Some people said it was too slow and would get bored. I found it fascinatingly suspenseful.
- DirectorDavid SladeStarsPatrick WilsonElliot PageSandra OhHayley's a smart, charming teenage girl. Jeff's a handsome, smooth fashion photographer. An Internet chat, a coffee shop meet-up, an impromptu fashion shoot back at Jeff's place. Jeff thinks it's his lucky night. He's in for a surprise.Again, an idea for a screenplay I had planned to write was made into a movie before I even began writing. The events in Hard Candy go a little further than I had planned to take my story and the direction is better than I would have done.
- DirectorDarren AronofskyStarsHugh JackmanRachel WeiszSean Patrick ThomasAs a modern-day scientist, Tommy is struggling with mortality, desperately searching for the medical breakthrough that will save the life of his cancer-stricken wife, Izzi.My screenplay titled 'Forever' was about a princess who dared a man to help her find the fountain of youth, which turned out to be a tree that they ate of. The tree of life granted them the ability to never grow old or die of any known illness or disease. Skip to 1997 where the princess is diagnosed with cancer. The man goes in search of the tree, in hopes of saving her with it's power, while she is hospitalized for the first time. In the end she dies before he can get back to her.
The Fountain is much more elaborate and shot much more beautifully than anything I could have done. - DirectorGus Van SantStarsGabe NevinsDaniel LiuTaylor MomsenA teenage skateboarder's life begins to fray after he is involved in the accidental death of a security guard.Just like with 'Elephant' Gus Van Sant slowly lets the story unravel, shooting in a style that is somewhere between a documentary and skate video. Another idea of mind already done exactly, if not better, than what I would have done with it. Damn!
