- Originally the Hundred Flowers Awards were only available to mainland Chinese nominees. In 2006 the awards opened up the acting categories to performers from Taiwan, Hong Kong and elsewhere in an effort to compete with Hong Kong Film Awards.
- The awards were resumed in 1980 after a period of suspension during the chinese cultural revolution. The ceremony takes place bi-annual since 2004.
