- Doctor Bamford has had enough of village life and is desperate for some distance from inquisitive Cornish neighbours. When the local estate agent shows him Tregunnt Farm, derelict and miles from anywhere, it's love at first sight. But the Bowden family from London also have their eye on the property with a view to developing the surrounding land into ugly holiday cottages. After being gazumped, the Doc decides to spook the family into leaving by pretending to be the Beast of Bodmin.
- Loveday Carey-Lewis is the new caretaker of the house Nancherrow. She also has to deal with love problems as she fights to keep the house.
- Keeping Nancherrow begins to drain Loveday's energy and deplete the family fortune. It also jeopardizes her marriage to Walter, just as an old flame shows up.
- Loveday breaks up with Walter and takes their son Nat to Nancherrow. The house gets another resident, too, but the demands of Nancherrow put all relationships to the test.
