- Follows an Indian family who moves from North Carolina to Lancaster, California after they purchased a hotel.
- Maxine dresses in all white, finding the final bit of jewelry to adorn her traditional Indian kurti. As she digs through a drawer, she comes across a silver kara. It triggers a memory in her... Flashback to a garden, where she is having tea with Raj and his mom. They're laughing together, but it becomes clear that the mom doesn't quite know how to talk with Maxine. She gets an urgent call and walks to the other side of the garden. That gives Maxine a moment to scold Raj about how he hasn't told his mom about their relationship in the 4 hours they've been there. He's worried about how she might react to him dating a non-Indian girl. Mom returns, and turns out, the phone call was Dolly aunty. She has a girl who might be perfect for Raj. An awkward moment passes, before Raj reveals that Maxine is actually his fiancée. Mom is stunned, and Maxine feels suddenly unwelcome. She gets up to leave, but Raj's mom stops her. She sits her down next to her. Maxine is worried that not being Indian might mean she's not able to be a real member of the family. Mom says that is absolutely not true. To prove that, the mom gives her a kara. It symbolizes a commitment to everything and everyone important in her life, including (now) Maxine. If Maxine ever feels alienated or alone, she should just look down and know that there is a piece of the mom's strength with her. They have a heartfelt moment. Back at the room where Maxine found the kara, she puts it on and goes out to the living room. There she finds a speechless, saddened Raj, gazing out the window. She embraces him, before they get in the car and leave. Maxine holds a funeral program with Raj's mom's face on it. As they arrive at the gurdwara, Raj freaks out. He says he can't do this and he misses his mom. To get him through it, Maxine gives him the kara and tells him to remember that she will always be with them through it. It calms him down and they finally step into the building for the service.
