Young Kieren Walker, one of the sufferers, returns home to Roarton for rehabilitation, whilst his sister Jem is a member of the HVF led by fanatical Bill Macy and hate preacher Oddie. Even driving Kieren home his loving parents Steve and Sue risk an encounter with another vigilante Ken though friendly nurse Shirley shows them how to administer medication to keep their boy 'normal' whilst Shirley's son Philip is a fervent HVF devotee anxious to prove himself. Kieren himself decides to join the Undead Liberation Army but Oddie and Macy are onto him and it is Jem who saves him by diverting them towards another target.
- Following the fate of a Partially Deceased neighbour Steve hides Kieren from callers but the boy feels stifled and goes to the cemetery where he was buried, meeting Amy Dyer, who is in the same position as himself but fun-loving and determined not to let it get her down. Macy's soldier son Rick, with whom Kieren was very close, returns from Afghanistan, severely scarred. He too is a 'rotter' but, as Macy's boy, has some protection. Amy persuades Kieren to attend Rick's homecoming party but it is interrupted by a call for a zombie hunt. A father and daughter pair of rotters are found but Kieren persuades Rick not to kill them.
- Kieren returns to the supermarket where he and Amy killed their victim Lisa Lancaster, and he recalls how Jem spared him when she could have shot him. Sister and brother consequently reconcile and together visit Lisa's parents who have her down as missing but they do not have the heart to tell them their daughter is dead. Amy leaves Roarton to join a PDS commune but Kieren declines to go with her. Bill Macy, unaware that his wife Janet is, like Sue, attending Shirley's support group for PDS relatives, orders Rick to kill Kieren but the boy refuses and pays the price. There is another killing before a suicidal Kieren is tracked down by his mother and returns to his now united family.
- A tanker is heading towards the bridge. When it is boarded by the coastguard the crew are discovered to be missing. The only people on board are five youths, drugged and chained. Saga and Martin are assigned to investigate the case.
- Four individuals wearing animal masks post a video online claiming responsibility for the tanker Saga and Martin are investigating. Deaths are reported of people eating poisoned food. Are the cases connected?
- Saga and Martin continue their hunt for the eco-terrorists, who have realised the police are on their trail.
- The hunt is on for the leader of the eco-terrorists, with Saga and Martin hoping to stop any further attacks from happening.
- As the investigation moves forward a new group of four, animal head wearing, eco-terrorists post a video online. Saga is having some relationship "issues".

- Martin visits Jens in prison and seems to be getting to him. As they re-interview witnesses Saga suspects a statement has been tampered with. Laura regains consciousness and remembers what her assailant looks like.
- Saga and Martin have a sketch of the suspect, but can they get there in time to avert 'The Graduation'? Their friendship is placed under strain by Martin's inquiry into Saga's past.
- It becomes apparent that the case isn't over and Saga and Martin race to prevent another terrorist attack. Saga faces a decision that may destroy her friendship with Martin.
- Philip, Maxine's second in command, is questioning the strictness of her regime so when a video shows him visiting the PDS brothel she sees the chance to oust him. Sylvia Lonsdale is making noises about the lack of interest in Henry's disappearance so Maxine offers Philip a chance of redemption by silencing her but Philip actually tries to stop Maxine from raiding the brothel and ends up in bed with Amy, who is aghast after seeing Simon kissing Kieren. Kieren's parents invite Simon to Sunday dinner, where he is very restrained but Jem has also invited Gary, now her lover, and when Gary proudly recounts his experiences of killing rabids it is Kieren who snaps and gives his own account of the Rising, disrupting the gathering. Meanwhile Zoe and Brian, two of Simon's disciples, free the rabids at the surgery, resulting in the death of doctor's receptionist Denise.
- Despite Gary's efforts to dissuade her Jem feels she must admit to Maxine that she killed Henry though Maxine does not condemn her and when Henry's mother reports him missing Maxine suggests that he may have gone to join an extremist ULA group. Meanwhile PDS sufferer Freddie Preston has returned from the dead to find his wife Haley has a new boyfriend, her boss Amir, and though they let him live with them Amir wants Freddie out, leading Freddie to ask Haley to run away with him. Kieren is working with Simon as cleaners at the sympathetic Dr Russo's surgery, where they see two caged rabids waiting to be collected for treatment. Simon aims to free them but Kieren prevents him and Simon returns to his group, advocating another rising. Maxine is aware that history may repeat itself and asks Gary to look out for her. Freddie turns rabid and desperately begs Haley to kill him after she refuses to leave with him and Gary is called in to shoot him. However Kieren is aware that Freddie only needs his medication to stabilize him and administers it. This persuades him that Simon might have a point after all and the two embrace as Kieren seemingly joins the group.
- A violent group calling themselves the Undead Liberation Army start committing atrocities, butchering train passengers which brings newly elected MP Maxine Martin to Roarton to declare that she will stamp out all PDS sufferers. After killing a rabid who has attacked the owner of the hotel where she is staying Maxine meets with Vicar Oddie who shows her a register of all the local PDs sufferers. There is a tussle and he collapses and Maxine takes the book for herself. Meanwhile Jem has an admirer in PDS sufferer Henry, whose mother claims he is psychic and Amy returns from the commune with her boyfriend Simon Monroe, whose aggressive actions in the drinking club where Kieren works cause the boy to quit his job and consider moving to Paris.
- Kieren's plans to leave Roarton are put on hold as Maxine tightens her grip. Jem is forced to confront her demons when a rabid appears in the school. Simon reveals he has feeling for Kieren; meanwhile disaster strikes in the woods.
- As Amy, who suspects that she may be turning human, continues to date Philip, Kieren's acts of defiance in not wearing his lenses or make-up lead to his being wrongly accused of freeing the rabids and placed under house arrest with a view to returning him to the Treatment Centre in Norfolk unless he confesses. With no support from the family he seeks out Simon, but Amy tells him that Simon has gone to the city. Simon was, in fact, the First Risen at the Rising, where he unwittingly killed his mother, and was the subject of horrifying experiments by sadistic Dr John Weston and his apparently kinder colleague Victor Halperin to study and control him. Such treatment caused him to espouse the ULA and now he is told by the anonymous Undead Prophet that he must return to Roarton and kill Kieren in order to effect a Second Rising. Maxine's spies however have alerted her to his mission.
- Kieren awaits transfer to Norfolk but, with Simon returning to lead his followers in a Second Rising, Maxine allows Gary to force Kieren to help find him. At the village fete it is noticed that Amy is transforming into a human by her ability to eat solid foods and the militant PDS sufferers have a stand-off in the graveyard against Jem and her rabid hunters. Kieren's father Steve stops Jem from killing her brother but an increasingly deranged Maxine, whose brother Danny was slain, announces that she wants a Second Rising to revive him and murders Amy, who is the true first risen. She demands the death of all PDS sufferers in Roarton but this horrifies the villagers and, as she is taken to an asylum, an uneasy truce occurs between the villagers and the Partially Dead with Kieren and Simon reconciled.
- When a well-known gender theorist, and owner of Copenhagen's first gender-neutral preschool, is found murdered at a construction site in Malmö, Saga has to cooperate with a new Danish colleague, Hanne, who has difficulty accepting Saga.
- A highly dysfunctional blended family is forced together when they realize a reported virus is actually the onset of the undead apocalypse.
- Saga gets a new Danish colleague, Henrik Sabroe, and together they continue to investigate Helle Anker's murder.
- The police receive a video demanding a ransom in exchange for Hans' release. They manage to locate him, but when they are about to free him, they find that his kidnapper has been shot and Hans has been abducted again.
- Hans is still in a coma. Saga makes a mistake in a dramatic hostage situation, but they manage to arrest a suspect who is taken in for questioning.
- Lillian discovers a wound in Hans' mouth, which turns out to be a branding mark. The other two victims are examined again and they also have the same kind of branding mark. The perpetrator is probably branding his victims, but for what?
- Saga and Henrik see a connection between the victims and some artwork hanging in a museum. All of the artwork is owned by Freddie Holst, a well-known and successful Danish business man.
- An older couple is found murdered in a spectacular fashion in their house outside Ystad. They have a connection to a piece of art and they both have branding marks in their mouths, just like the previous victims.
- The hunt for the killer intensifies, and Saga and Henrik are certain of his identity. But when they are about to bring him in, he has disappeared.
