- A film of the 1984 stage production at the Comédie Française.
- It has been years since Don Alvaro Dabo, the Grand Master of the Order of Santiago, has given up the profession of arms. Now retired in Avila, Castile he lives there in an austere and unadorned residence. Devoting all his time to prayer, he has become contemptuous of the vanity of all earthly goods. Mariana, his daughter, accompanies this proud man's life with admiration and fear. At a gathering of his Order, the knights tell him of a prestigious position in the New World offered by the King. Nothing easier than to make a fortune in such an Eldorado. With this money, he could endow his daughter and marry her to Don Jacinto, her beloved. But will the sainted man agree to, just for the sake of Mariana, stoop to the level of those he disdains?
- Two married couples share the same holiday house. Everything seems to go smoothly except that Pierre, one of the two husbands, is irresistibly attracted to Marthe, his friend's wife. As for the latter, she feels exactly the same for him. One night (or is it the same thing every night?) Pierre and Marthe remain in the living room after their mutual partners have gone to bed. They talk and banter pleasantly until they half-wordily evoke the present that could be theirs if they had married each other or what future they could contemplate if they escaped together.
- Mr. Perrichon, a successful and self-important coach builder, has decided to take a vacation in the Swiss Alps with his wife and his charming daughter Henriette. The latter has attracted the attention of two young men, Daniel and Armand. The two lovers and rivals are both aware that in order to win the girl's hand, they have to conquer the father first . They follow the family more or less discreetly to a hotel near the Mer de Glace and endeavor to make themselves indispensable. Armand manages to save the father from a horse fall while Daniel chooses instead to be rescued from a crevasse by Mr. Perrichon. Which one will win?
